[ CHECK-IN ] : after receiver has recovered from their wounds, sender visits them in their sickbed to make sure they're okay. ( Narka to Mirax ) ›› @croyant
the thin mat didn’t so much as refuse to conform to her body as it entirely lacked the thickness required to do so. for three entire standard rotations, ever since her final bacta immersion, she’d been laid out on this slab of a medbed, staring at the featureless ceiling without anything truly to occupy her or her mind. the moment for her release could not come soon enough, but she remained far too shaky on her feet to even be permitted back to her quarters, let alone returned to duty.
neither were there any visitors to distract her from the spans of time in between meals, therapy, and checks. considering the circumstances, a chance lingered that she wasn’t authorized any, yet… she wouldn’t be shocked to learn there simply had not been anyone who cared enough to set aside some of their off hours for her. mirax couldn’t even tell herself whether, if any of her colleagues had been injured, she would do so for them.
probably, the lieutenant decided, as long as they weren’t the ones currently attempting to camber over her, for what she never understood. it only created chaos, chaos they certainly could no longer afford. if there was some grand position awaiting them, she might understand, would likely participate herself, but unless their skills were greater than they appeared, all they would gain is a promotion and a little extra power.
perhaps that was all they required.
the whoosh of the door swishing open caught her attention in an instant, the cause both a potentially pleasant surprise as well as likely an aggravation. ❝ zaila… ❞ weary and wary hazel eyes watched the younger woman’s approach. ❝ don’t tell me you’re here to question me about what happened. ❞ not that she believed she had been implicated in the attack… far from it. her situation would be far more obvious than this, far more unpleasant. but there were other, far more maddening reasons why she would prefer not to speak to… whatever exactly happened. ❝ because if you are, i don’t even remember where i was. ❞

soft, comparatively, for the time being, her pulse thundered against her temples, that uncomfortable pressure spanning between them both. the cause could be any of a number of current dilemmas, or simply her body deciding she hadn’t had caffeine in a reasonable amount of time. removing the possibility of the latter was her current mission, squeezing a serving size packet of concentrated caf into a steaming cup of water with rapt concentration.
concentration that was broken by a fellow lieutenant attempting to use the equally malfunctioning caf machine. sardonic grimace settling on her lips, she lifted her shoulders in a half-hearted shrug. ❝ it’s been broken for a while. maintenance said they’ll get to it. ❞ as his reasonableness was unknown to her, however, she kept the extent of their complaints to herself. ( welcome to where nothing seems to get fixed unless it’s ‘vital’. ) at this rate, maintenance would likely go through an entire generation before they got to the machine.
something about his good natured fatique, however, had her holding out one of her caf packs. ❝ here. it isn’t half as good, but it’s double the strength. ❞ a simple nod in front of her followed as she stepped out of his way. ❝ hot water is in the thermocarafe over here. ❞ thank the stars for lab burners…
he doesn't usually travel to this part if the ship. a software malfunction has been driving this team up the wall for a week and mitaka was eager to take a crack at it. a change of scenery was nice. so was a chance to use the skills he worked so hard for in academy. the error was more complicated than he anticipated but mitaka wasn'tcomplaining. compared to his normal shift, this was a vacation. he'd spent over five hours working nonstop. a caf break was way overdue. maybe he'd indulge in a snack. sugar was a source of energy, right? he pressed the button on the caf machine and frowned when a discouraging "brrr" shook the machine. just his luck. the lieutenant sighed and turned to the officer on his right with a weary grin. ❝ please don't tell me it's broken. ❞

i don’t like anyone better than you . ( from little rey dkfgjlsjf ) ›› @graysistance
the honey-sweet honesty was as powerful as a blow to her abdomen, sucking the breath silently from her lungs as the heart nestled between them ached. only the decades of shielding emotions from the world prevented the tears which threatened to burn at the corners of her eyes, to shatter the tender smile which sat atop her lips. fingers gently stroked over small buns, sweeping the ever collecting sand from the baby soft strands as mirax stared out over the seemingly never ending, sunset hued expanse of the battlefield, swallowing viciously against the lump which rose into her throat. ❝ i’m honored, sweetheart. ❞ light her tone could barely hold for it would only take a single glance into that wide hazel gaze to utterly break her.
how? how could she? how could she leave her? the thought alone almost sundered the scientist’s ever more tenuous control, almost bent her over her knees to sob out these feelings of which she could not even name. to abandon this sweet, so resilient child to this hopeless existence where heat replaced the cold, arid sands moisture slicked metal and stone, she would survive as mirax once had, that the woman had no doubt, but that lonely agony, the never ending hunger… how could she?
she would become her parents. become that monster.
never before setting matching eyes upon this little girl had she ever felt this. placing her life in other’s hands had been unthinkable since she too was small. trusting others only brought her pain, betrayal, even now. though these emotions were hardly ones she understood, instinct only needed a moment to whisper into her ear with the slowly cooling evening breezes who also held them in their chest.
a mother.
overwhelming, gasping certainty sunk into her bones, a hesitant arm sliding about such slight shoulders to nestle rey into her side. sun heated hair warmed a cheek as mirax pressed a silent kiss onto the precious crown, unmoving even as it ended, even as trickling damp cooled her skin, wet the wispy strands.
❝ i don’t like anyone more than you too. ❞

discovering the charging station opposite the lab in utter shambles, parts strewn along the corridor, was perhaps the last sight she expected to come upon after her midshift meal. to only maximize the absurdity, the last sight mirax thought she would spy this quarter was general hux stood in that self same corridor… set aside the fact he was observing the before mentioned charging station. should she now anticipate supreme leader snoke himself to float by on an evening stroll?
at the brief, and honestly still confounding, explanation presented to her, the lieutenant peered about his shoulder for a better look at the chaos, before returning her attention to her superior with a single dark brow risen. ❝ that’s unfortunate. ❞ response so apathetic, tone exorbitantly dry, that she knew it approached - or perhaps crossed - the invisible line, the lieutenant worried her cheek lest she add, “ may mouse droids and astromechs everywhere laud you for your consideration. ” however, what would be doubly unfortunate was a punishment for insubordination - which she might have already earned. no need to worsen the matter.
frankly, she hoped the station would be inoperable for quite some time. the clatter and beeps of droids coupling and uncoupling proved severely distracting when one attempted to notate data - data which ensured that the personnel on this vessel did not keel over from contaminated or altered food. repairs were significantly quieter, and if any of her colleague admitted to their involvement in its sabotage, she wouldn’t be surprised.
she wouldn’t. she didn’t hate the droids that much.
❝ if i may ask, sir, did you come down here for anything else? ❞ she wouldn’t mind him catching her supervising officer doing likely anything but his duties. though, on other hand, if there was an opportunity to warn the man of the general’s approach, it might finally end his attempts to make her life miserable.

A flurry of thoughts swarm behind a weary pair of pensive eyes, as @ofblasters‘s query rings across the plane of his conscious mind. “What happened? This wasn’t like this.” Ever analytical, ever cautious, —Hux ponders exactly what data he should convey to his inquisitive Lieutenant. ❛ Indeed it wasn’t not, ❜ The General muses, voice void of cynicism. His eyes gleam with mild exasperation as he observes the frayed wires of the disassembled charging station. While Lieutenant Kuroon’s temperament, mannerisms and background fail to convey any potential animosity or ill intent toward Hux himself or the First Order, the fiery haired General is inclined to practice discretion in the wake of this incident. “Someone is trying to have me killed” is not exactly good for morale. Especially if his suspicions are correct in regards to the identity of theassassin.
❛ It was corrupted and therefore must be wiped and repaired to prevent the potential spread of malware to any of the droids aboard this ship. ❜ There is a lightness that almost negates the matter-of-fact undertone in his voice. The explanation is not a lie, after all. Simply a limitation of truth. ❛ I assure you, that the technicians will make quick work of repairing it, lest the droids in this wing suffer the misfortune of going uncharged. ❜
