Pokémon that Lyra dislikes are few and far between. She prides herself on not judging pokémon based on the stereotypes constructed around them. Growing up as a league maniac, Lyra internalised Karen's attitude towards training pokémon to heart. Each pokémon is worthy of respect, each pokémon is individual, each pokémon should be treated as you'd like to be treated.

But even heroes have prejudices.

Most of them are mild. Unsurprisingly, Lyra is weary of trainers who carry several of Rocket's standard issue pokémon. It's not uncommon for poison-type specialists to raise members of the zubat and koffin lines, but if a trainer has a golbat, a weezing and a ratticate on their belt raises suspicion.

There’s a certain disinterest in her interactions with the houndoom, vileplume and nirdoran lines. She doesn’t approach them the same way she would other pokémon.

There’s a hesitancy to touch nirdoking and nirdoqueen that goes beyond being cautious of their poison points. A readiness to complain about urban houndoom numbers increasing. A vendetta against trainers who let their vileplume roam free in crowded places during their pollination season. She insists it’s inconsiderate, don’t they realise how many people are allergic?

The association with Rocket’s leaders is just too strong. But ultimately, it wasn’t the heads of the organisation that caught her off-guard.

Those scars on her arm and neck. The blood followed her out of the Dance Studio, the cuts went deeper than her flesh.

Lyra can’t stand to be around scyther.

She never mastered her poker face, she’s irritable and jumpy around them, snaps at anyone who comments on her change in demeanour. Won’t let her pokémon near one outside of battle. Clumsy insects with blades for arms can’t be trusted around other creatures. It’d be better if people stopped trying to train them altogether, brainless beasts can’t be trusted to hold back in battle.

( Brainless beasts will unflinchingly follow the orders of their beastly masters. )

   It’s a sharp shriek that rises in pitch as the Unidentified Flying Meatstuff goes hurtling towards her. And hits her in square in the face with a wet slap.

   For a second she’s stunned, hackles raised, hands held up in front of her in claws as the tail slides down her face a little.

   “You...” she growls, balling her hands into fists. “You...” She peels the tail of her face, revealing the snarl she’s wearing underneath.

   “You rottin’ steakhead!!” she bellows, throwing the tail back at Proton before tearing her bag open and starting to hurl everything potentially painful towards him as well. “You stupid bloodmouth!!” There goes a fairly substantially sized rock that failed the fossil lick test!

This tea is red-brown and somehow you know the leaves were steeped in glacial water. The traditional earthenware tea cup it's held in is cold to the touch, but when it passes your lips it almost scalds you.

It's hot, not just in temperature, there's something spicy in here. Cinnamon maybe, it's too subtle to be sure. It's a black tea, no milk, no sugar. It would be completely run of the mill if it wasn't indescribably delicious. It somehow tastes familiar and completely alien. You think this tea may have just changed your life.

You look down at your reflection in it's surface as you delcare, "maybe I could learn to like this stuff."

"Trick or treat!" Someone that looks exactly like Lance, but acts ever so slightly unlike him, shows up at Lyra's doorstep. Who is that?

The sight of this spooky doppelganger on her doorstep makes her laugh.  Whoever that is, they’ve certainly captured Lance’s appearance flawlessly. The sharp jaw, the sharp silvery eyes, the effortless messy—but also clearly very deliberately slicked back—hair. Silky black cape over the perfectly tailored red jacket.

Only problem was, Lance wouldn’t be caught dead trick-or-treating for a PR stunt, let alone a casual visit. 

“Hey, cute costume, you make that?” She asks without waiting for an answer, absent mindedly dropping a few rage candy bars into her visitor’s gift bag. “Ya know yer old enough to go buy candy yourself though, right? If yer wanted to show yer costume off you coulda just posted in on Insta. I’d share it for ya!”

certainly while pelagia's intentions had been kind, a very damp and very quickly crumpling poorly folded triangle is no real gift. and so alongside the gastrodon's creation is one of cynthia's own, a small, black and grey dappled folded staraptor that might be at home, perched upon one's finger.

It makes her a little giddy, being approached by one of her greatest heroes as a friend, more so when she was accompanied by one of her trusted partners. Doubly more so when the two presented her with a small, decorative gift box.

Although she pinches the rather heavily snail-trailed triangle between the very tips of her fingers. her smile reaches the very corners of her face.

"Snorunt origami? That's wizard cute, thanks Pelagia!!" Homemade gifts easily had thrice the charm of store-brought presents, regardless of how slimy the gifter may be. "This is gonna look so sweet next to Miss Cynthia's 'raptor. Which is baller, dude, the balance, the folds, the materials. You think I can hang this from the ceiling? I'll stick the 'runt on the wall, they'll be my new favourite decorations—"

If someone doesn't interrupt her soon, she'll be excitedly babbling on for the next half an hour. Suffice to say, she now owes Cynthia & Pelagia two equally cool handmade gifts.

Yes!! Yes they would be!! I think they could both learn from each other—Mercedes obviously had quite a privileged upbringing whilst Lyra obviously, well, had a very difficult childhood that culminated with her essentially running away into the wilderness. They have very different perspectives on life.

And, not gonna lie, I have been getting a little emotional about the idea of Lyra having a friend who's also a trained therapist because Mercedes might just be the only person who can get Lyra to open up about her trauma in a controlled, healthy way.

Plus, as previously discussed, I think that it would be really special for Lyra to have a close friend with psychic power because she's spent most of her life privately very afraid of people with extrasensory powers. As a consequence of her previously latent empath powers, if a psychic were to use their powers on or around her she would suffer a strong negative reaction as her own powers would essentially double their strength. So learning that she has powers of her own—that no, it's not just that she's good at reading pokémon's body language, she's got Powers—was a massive shock.

She struggles with feeling that her powers have somehow given her an unfair advantage as a trainer but also has a little impostor syndrome over the fact she's a psychic with very weak powers. Having someone like Mercedes who's also still refining her powers would put things into perspective for Lyra, make the whole process of figuring this psychic business out a lot less lonely.
