‘ i don’t — i don’t know how to do this without you . ’

Their mind tried to wrap around the situation they’ve stepped in– How each step they took was only to sink further and go nowhere. It had all been a trick, the hero thought they could swim to the surface and finally break free, but instead they had fallen inside a large pool of quicksand without realizing– Until they drowned. 

Her words were like a dagger slowly plunging in their heart. Nothing hurt them more than her being hurt, especially if they were the cause. A sure step forward, their hands resting on Megara’s face as tired eyes met hers, trying to take in every detail of her to store in their mind to never forget, as Hercules didn’t know when would be the next time they’d see her again. They still held out hope that this wasn’t a definitive goodbye, but the looming fear that it would be lingered within them. 

“Remember when we met? You were basically trying to fight a centaur all on your own, and what did you tell me? I can handle this.” Voice soft, a short reassuring smile on their lips as they tried to ease her doubts. The memory bringing a bittersweet feeling.  “You’re a strong woman, Meg. You’re fearless and independent– With or without me.  That’s something I’ve always admired and loved in you. I believe in you. You can handle this.”

❝ You understand wanting to protect what you care about , don’t you ? You’d do anything . ❞

Eyes that used to be so full of life and vibrance, looked up at the woman speaking to them– Their eyes now covered in the desperation and exhaustment that now filled them. Hercules didn’t know where the question was coming from, they woud think Megara wouldn’t even feel the need to ask, she simply would know. 

But she was smart, Hercules knew that much, she was so much smarter than what they could ever be– So they trusted there was a reason why she’d be asking. Their eyes lingered on her, as if trying to figure out why until they finally gave a slow nod. 

“Absolutely.”

They would do absolutely anything, and so all they could think about was– her. Hercules would take another dive into the Styx and swim against its current, they’d fall down in the Underworld or step down of their place in the Olympus all over again if it was for her. 

They would condemn themselves to Holden for life and with no chance of ever being free again, if it meant her freedom. 

“Anything I can, and more.”

“What good is freedom if we can’t do what we want?”

“What good?” 

Hercules asked almost baffled, they blinked a couple of times as a frown slowly graced their features. A frown that had become a trademark in their face as the Exodus happened and they arrived and had a new fate in Fabletown. 

“It might not be our world anymore, I know it’s different now. But we’re finally free, again. No heroic fate, no Hades. It’s just you and me, like how it was supposed to remain.” It had taken them years and many sacrifices; but they’ve both fought and endured, until they finally got what they yearned. 

Or at least, what they thought they were aiming for. 

“After all we’ve been through–” Hercules held her hands in between theirs, calloused and rough skin careful against smooth and tender. “Meg, please, don’t tell me you’re regretting this– us.”
