          " sarah , i have a question for you, ” KAT declared , clearly given up on the show they were trying to watch. a smile formed on her lips, thanks to the effects of the glass of wine in her hand. “ would it really be all that bad if i got fired ??? ” the answer was hypothetically yes. she loved being a journalist, even if she wasn’t always a fan of her assignments. plus, all her hard work would just be going down the drain ... “ i mean, why can’t i just start my own blog ??? ” she furrowed her brow slightly.  “ do people still write blogs? news blogs? i could do that instead, don’t you think? ”

         KATHERINE was exiting the stage door of the theatre when she ran into the familiar face ( almost literally ). “ jack kelly ! ” she sounded surprised. she wasn’t sure if she was more caught off guard by his mere presence, or the fact she didn’t expect to run into him in this area of town. ( then again, she was well aware about how little she knew about him... should she really be surprised? )

       she leaned against the building as she continued, “ i didn’t expect to run into someone like you around these parts. ” her lips pulled into a slight smirk. “ or at least, i’ve never run into you ‘round here before, considering how often i am ... ”

𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤 #𝟎𝟎𝟑 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝑲𝑨𝑻𝑯𝑬𝑹𝑰𝑵𝑬 𝑷𝑳𝑼𝑴𝑩𝑬𝑹

“ 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚍𝚘 𝚋𝚎𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚎 𝚒'𝚖 𝚘𝚕𝚍 ᵇʸ ᵏᵃᵗʰᵉʳⁱⁿᵉ ᵖᵘˡⁱᶻᵗᵉʳ ” is scrawled on her father’s old stationary. kat remembers writing it during a spout of adolescent rage. her father was ignoring her again, probably giving her the stationary to draw on to keep her occupied. ( she was far too old to even be doodling anymore. she moved onto bigger things, like learning how to hate your parents. ) the writing is surprising neat for however old she was at the time, though that shouldn’t have been a shock. the fact she crossed out the title makes the now young adult laugh. ( after all, she wasn’t about to make the mistake of getting old. ) feeling nostalgic somehow, she reads:

stay young FOREVER

overthrow dad

start my own paper

be more successful than dad

quit pageants

run away from home

be on a magazine cover ( but not like what mom wants )

be nothing like my parents

get famous for being good

expose bad people

do whats right

do the opposite of dad

some things haven’t changed, the reporter thinks to herself. she debates on grabbing a pen to cross off what she had definitively done, but decides against it. no need to ruin it. she’s surprised it even made it this long, hidden away in an old notebook of hers. surely, her father would have torn it up had he found it ... that’s probably why she hid it in the first place. one of the many things she hid from her father ... 

she can’t quite part with it yet, maybe another day, but for now: she folds it in half and haphazardly puts it in her desk draw. she slams it shut. back to work ...

⌞ʾ⁎ ⊰ maia mitchell, female, she/her ⊱ i think i just saw KATHERINE ‘KAT’ PULITZER PLUMBER walk across trafalgar square, singing to SOULMATE ( LIZZO ). you know, the TWENTY-FOUR year old JOURNALIST? people claim that they are just like KATHERINE PULITZER from NEWSIES . it must be because they are AMBITIOUS and PRIVILEGED as well… though i could be wrong. all i know for sure is that they live at EMERALD apartment.⌝

same old kat mostly. i wanted to flesh out her background, change a few things up.

𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 ( 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 )

katherine pulitzer was born into privileged, considering her media mogul of a father and new york socialite / former pageant queen of a mother. growing up, she spent more times with nannies and her family’s employees than her own parents. the most time katherine ever spent with her mother was when she was still being forced into beauty pageants. the ' quality ‘ time she spend with her father was when there were fluff pieces being written about his family. beautiful wife, perfect child. he truly did strive for that perfect family lie ...

safe to say, their home wasn’t as picture - perfect as the mogul lead on. her parents’ marriage was one of convenience, an equal exchange. ( he got a beautiful wife, she got all the money she could spend. ) katherine was but a by - product. it became abundantly clear neither truly wanted kids, but ... mistakes happened, don’t they? 

katherine’s parents expected her to continue her supposed path, following in her mother’s footsteps, but the young girl was much more interested in her father’s business than that of her mother’s ; she wanted to write, share stories, spread the news. her mother was sad to no longer have a little doll to dress - up, but her father didn’t care so long as she wasn’t wasting his fortune like some other heiresses ... thus, she flew across the country to study journalist ( and get far away from her parents ).

during university is when katherine started to using the byline “ plumber ”. while her name didn’t typically cause issues, it did any time you tried to look her up. ( she needed an online presence, and it’s hard when your name results in articles about your father and your former pageant history. ) it was the best way to distance herself from her past, and it’s been pretty effective so far.

in an attempt to further herself ( quite literally ) even more, she decided to move to london right after uni. however, in order to do so ... she had to use her father’s connections ... her personal connections were limited, and she didn’t nearly have enough credentials to go international by herself. thus, it’s technically her father that got her the job, and kat hates that fact. fortunately, she’s been working her long enough that no one seems to remember how she got the job in the first place ...

𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐰𝐨 ( 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕 )

she’s been in london for a little over two years ! she had made great strides in her time here, including working her way up from copywriter to published journalist. she started off very closed - off and focused on her career, but after making some friends, she learned to loosen up every now and again. 

she works for the arts and lifestyle section of her news company. this means she mostly covers local events in the community, sometimes the occasional piece of celebrity news, and the random pop culture article. ( do not ask her assignments that involve online memes and trends ... ) her work is usually just on the website, but it occasionally gets into the physical paper.

safe to say, kat is very quiet about her past and has been for a while. there are a few times she mentions her parents existing, though only in passing. she never says what they do, her relationship with them, anything. the most you may get is an “ oh i don’t talk to them much anymore. ”

kat, by default, tries to come off as professional and serious as best she can, especially when meeting new people. however, no matter how hard she tries, she still falters from time to time. sometimes you can help your true self from surfacing ...

kat’s latest personal project is an attempt to expose her father’s facade. he’s build this perfect public image. one of the perfect balance of business, family, and morals ... but really, he’s no better than the rest of them. it’s just about time someone fixes the narrative ...

              waking up in jack kelly’s bed, next to the still sleeping artist himself, was not something KAT had expected to take such a pleasure in. however, she didn’t let herself relish in the moment too long. she forced herself out of the bed, almost immediately reaching for her own shirt when ... some little voice in her head told her to not rush out so quickly. in that moment, she suddenly opted for his shirt instead. ( it was probably a lot more comfortable anyways ... )

             she silently made her way to the kitchen. she needed coffee ... fast. while waiting for the coffee pot, she couldn’t help but notice the nagging feeling she could just sneak out, no need to drag the morning out. she felt so at odds with herself, but perhaps she always did when it came to one jack kelly. shaking her head, the mere smell of coffee was already waking her up some. 

            almost as a distraction, she started to scavenge through his kitchen looking for food. she managed to find some fruit, which would have to suffice as the coffee was finally done. she poured herself a cup; the first sip already made her feel loads better. she returned her attention to the produce. she found a small knife and started to cut everything into bite - sized pieces. by the time she was done, she could hear movement from the bedroom once more. 

         with a smirk, she took the small bowl of fruit in one hand and her mug in the other. she approached the bedroom once more, pausing momentarily in the doorway. “ surprised i’m still here? ” she asked before continuing towards the bed. she folded her legs beneath as she reclaimed her spot from the night before. she held the plate out towards the artist. “ while i’m not usually the breakfast - in - bed type ... doesn’t mean i’m not willing to share. plus, it’s your own food anyways ... ”

               it was yet another mid - summer celebration in the park, and this time around KAT managed to drag a certain filmmaker with her. she was tired of the same old festivities, but at least she didn’t need to maintain her usual professional demeanor with mark. “ i bet i could just edit my last article about this shit and no one would notice, ” she said with a smirk as she jotted something down in her notebook. “ oh, and, uh... thanks for coming, i guess. i’d hate to have to pretend to be enjoying myself on something so ... uneventful. i promise to make it up to you, somehow ... ”

         “ men. ain’t. shit. ” KAT tried to yell above the noise. even if this person was a complete stranger, she was always down to listen to why yet another guy was being the literal embodiment of a trash can. it was always an entertaining conversation and usually cause no real harm.  “ wait, wait, wait... ” she stopped both herself and her new friend. she needed to recollect why she was supposedly upset. “ what did this guy do again? why should i hate him? ”

         KAT was having a lot of fun tonight ; so much so that she had reached that level of intoxication where she was getting a bit sentimental. however, with her feelings suddenly being more out in the open, she was more than likely to let a few things slip. for that reason, the journalist seemed to be avoiding a certain jack kelly.

         it couldn’t last forever, it seemed. on her way to get a new drink ( which she probably didn’t need ) , she almost literally ran into jack. “ oh , i’m - ” she cut herself off, realizing who it was. an awkward laugh escaped her lips. “ jack ! hi ! ” if she didn’t watch her words, tonight surely was going to be an interesting night...
