mak.oto is a very superstitious person. some of her beliefs are interpreted as naive or childish, but even so she rarely let’s that faze her. she sees black cats (like mor.gana) to be good luck, and goes out of her way to cuddle and spoil him at times (she really loves animals). many of the old superstitions (first dream of the new year, not stepping on the fabric of tatami mats, etc.) are still beliefs that mak.oto subscribes to, though she finds western susperstitions to be silly.

her mother taught her many of these things, and it’s one of the few remaining connections mak.oto has to her.

when mak.oto gets her own place, she adopts a fluffy munchkin kitten she names joker due to his white coloring with dark spots.

mak//oto’s family has ancestry in sephardic jews who came to japan through the dutch after fleeing from portugal and spain after the inquisition. while it largely disappeared from family practice and knowledge, mak.ot/o’s heritage traces back to the ancient hebrews--represented in the markings of B and J on the collar of her summer uniform.

B and J stand for Boaz and Jachin---the two pillars that marked the entrace to the first Temple built by King Solomon for the Jewish people. Ma//ko.to’s ancestors served as priests (cohanim) to the temple--marking them as holy people, those closest (under the king) to G-d--before the diaspora caused by the destruction of the second temple caused them to flee Judea. 

the metal that was used to construct the pillars---brass---is represented in the metal of her melee weapon (tekken, more commonly known as brass knuckles).

after the events of p//5, ma..ko/to formally converts to judaism and incorporates religious studies into her education and experience as a police officer.

as student council president (and the principal’s favorite toy to yell at) mak.oto probably knew at least a little bit more about kam.oshida and his actions than the rest of the student population. however she was forced into silence out of fear of her sister and any chance at living up to the giant shadow she was under, as well as administrative pressure. but it’s something she regrets and feels immensely guilty about, and is part of the reason she’s so proactive and rash in the kan/eshir/o case.

fun mako facts:

she does all the chores and shopping for herself and sa.e. due to the two of them living off of sa.e’s salary (which is still very good), mak.oto has become a pro at discount shopping and coupons

 she also does the laundry, cooking, and cleaning. she’ll often get up hours before school begins to make lunch for herself, sa.e, and the other pt’s.

hardly gets any sleep. like at all. averages maybe 4-5 hours on a school night if she’s lucky. this goes down to 3-4 hours after joining the pt’s

gets sick a lot because of her awful sleep patterns, so her medicine cabinet it literally stocked with every remedy known to man. she refuses to be stopped or miss school because she’s sick, even if it’s a fever.

she had mono in her second year and didn’t even know it.

makes extremely detailed plans of infiltrations based on the maps and pace of the group. this plan is usually changed at least five times before they even reach the halfway point.

has a color coded schedule for her life her.mione gra//nger style

it has been redone several times by now---to the point she’s nearly given up on updating it

if you call her, she will come. 3am? she’s probably awake, but she leaves her phone on ring so she can answer it. need someone to talk to? she’ll stay up the entire night.

she can be extremely overbearing and nosy, but it’s the only way she knows how to show she cares. she gets better....to an extent, but can still butt her nose where it’s not supposed to be from time to time. she needs clear boundaries or she’s likely to get all up in your business. and if she thinks something shady is going on, she’ll get involved anyways.

she’s always wanted a big, fluffy samoyed. their apartment doesn’t allow pets, and neither does s/ae.

before school, mak.oto gets up extra early in the morning to cook bento boxes for herself, sa.e, and the other pt’s (except yusu.ke and fut.aba). she’s an excellent cook and usually makes the food into cute shapes

i have many issues with the storyline of p.5 but the fact that mak/.oto’s reaction to sa..e’s palace was practically completely glossed over pisses me off.

mak/oto struggled that entire time, often isolated herself when at home (not that sa.e was returning often at that point) and, more than once, had panic attacks--usually at night--when thinking about the situation. she was convinced her sister was going to figure it out, remember her shad’ow’s experiences or something, and ruin everything.

she spent a lot of time with ha.ru and an.n, often not returning home until very late---the atmosphere of the apartment often made it feel like it was hard to breathe just by being in there. while she forced a smile and convinced the others she was fine, mako.to really struggled with accepting the situation and confronting s.ae.

after the route was sec.ured to the treasure room, mak.oto had a panic attack in the palace (they were in a safe room at that point), and she was forced to tell at least some of the truth to the others. she had an extremely hard time with the fight against her sister’s shadow, and, before the raid, she went over their plan nearly constantly.
