(as you may have noticed by my icons) hijikata--- although someone who embraces the masculinity with which she is associated with historically, wears a flower pinned to the lazy ties in her hair. however, there is a reason beyond the simplicity of ‘she likes flowers’.

during her time as a servant to kouyou, her mistress would often attempt to have this servant embrace the more FEMININE qualities with which she possessed. dressing her && tying her hair. the flowers in question were always placed as decorative pieces even in the more intricate styles. 

kouyou, whether hijikata would ever speak of this to anyone aside from her mistress, was a special existence to her. a master with which she can never forget, as she was the only one to contradict hijikata’s own wishes--- ordering her to LIVE despite the madness that consumes her. the only woman thus far with which she ever wished to bow && serve.

hijikata possesses no talent with feminine things--- her fingers cannot weave the braids within her hair. && so the time of make-up && delicate dress would pass as her time with kouyou ends. but there would be one piece of her which would remain. the flowers in her hair. to serve as a memento of their time together--- && the VOW which she had made to continue to live. 

the flowers themselves are kousa dogwood. a white bloom which flowers in the height of summer. it possesses four petals remarkably in the shape of a cross, && thus why it was adopted by Christianity as a form of symbolism. however, the meaning of the flower itself is RENEWAL && BEGINNINGS. 

a fitting gift from a master who wished only for the happiness of her burdened servant.

HISTORY. born into a rather well-off family amongst the mage association in japan, toshi had never known the discomforts of starvation nor the manual labor associated with having to provide for herself. for even when her parents perished, father from work && mother from illness, she was left to live off of her inheritance until the age when she might choose her own path. 

she herself is a mage, though not proud nor lording over other human beings. she was born with spina bifida, a medical defect in which her spine did not develop normally, && whilst being one of the less extreme cases, it does cause her pain upon too much strenuous activity. && later in life could lead to paralysis of the lower half of her body. as such, though she has a love for kendo && would have joined the club located at her school, she does not possess the strength of body for it,

currently she is the vice president of her student council at her high school. although she is a senior, she possesses no thoughts on what she wishes to become in the future. the life laid out before her seems rather uneventful. boring. && she wishes she could have an adventurous lifestyle as those she so dearly studies in history. 

REINCARNATION she is the reincarnation of hijikata toshizo. since the berserker her is merely a copy by the grail to participate as a summon in holy grail wars. it does not possess her soul itself. a soul which was reincarnated into this girl. much of her traits are similar to hijikata of the past, but not so much so that she herself would make such a ridiculous connection. 

she cannot recall her previous life, though some things will seem familiar or nostalgic to her. the exception being in the case of being contracted to a servant that was linked to her in life. as she may end up recalling after some time via the connection they share.

WISH her wish is complicated. she simply wishes to “live”, though she cannot say what that means.

One Word Writing Prompts05. — broken

never in life had hijikata known what it felt to be broken. she had been unyielding, undeterred. marched on with every twist && attempt to shatter her will to fight. but bent && broken were not the same. onward would she march through gunfire && through certain death. never once giving pause. the only issue --- the only semblance of regret to rust the warped presence she had become was the death of kondo-san. it was in that moment --- perhaps even from the moment of his initial capture that she trod an unsure path. && the rust of regret touched the pristine blade that was she. 

for a time, she carried on in delusion of rescue --- but after that, oh after that, she merely carried on with the weight of the fallen upon her shoulders. moving her forward. the only assurance she possessed being that she must see it through to the end. someone must carry this burden && she would volunteer. not to ABSOLVE her sins. not to put their spirits to rest. but to do as she felt she must. as was the shinsengumi way. to follow the path of the warrior --- of sincerity to it’s collapse. 

broken --- was only known in her berserker form. summoned with the ghosts of regrets that she knows not if they are her own or illusion. perhaps even initially, this hijikata is the same. harboring no regrets. && yet the more the berserker surfaces, the more the demon appears && twists the ideals && mind of the woman who it resides --- the more twisted the mind gets. she, herself, is BROKEN compared to the woman of the past. a fragment of what once was. && perhaps by instinct, she is attempting to mend this gap. to right the wrong which has come to pass. even if it means her death. for that much at least has not changed --- that toshizo hijikata does not fear death.

❝ ˢᵃˡᵛᵃᵗⁱᵒⁿ ᶠᵒʳ ˢᵉʳᵉⁿⁱᵗʸ ❞ ❖ ᴬᴾᴼᶜᴿᵞᴾᴴᴬ (ᵛ.ᴵ)

class: berserker master: katsumi kiryu alignment: red faction reasoning: replacing the concept of berserker of red’s summoning--- hijikata was summoned by an agent allied with the clock tower organization. similar to that of kairi’s situation in canon. however, in this case her master ACCEPTED the alliance initially offered by the priest shirou kotomine. however, his motives behind such are much different than one might expect. in truth, her master holds no allegiance to the clock tower--- && secretly holds a distaste for mages && magic itself. his wish is to eliminate all magic from the world. to eliminate the strong leading && towering over the weak. as an attempt to make all of mankind equal. to create peace. a dream spurred on by the death of his family in a conflict between mage associations. 

regardless of this fact, hijikata would likely have allied herself with that of shirou anyway. the concept of salvation for humanity aligns at least to an extent with her own wishes. whilst her own thoughts are burdened by the past--- looking for a way to bring restless spirits && guilt to rest by trading her own life in history with that of another--- she cannot help but concede (esp. as a berserker) that humanity has lost something fundamental. or perhaps they had never possessed it at all. in this new world, perhaps equality could be achieved no matter someone’s birth or status--- the wish of a dear friend that she wished could be fulfilled. 

on another note, though not well versed in history, even she would know of the exploits of amakusa shirou. && the discovery of his identity would probably instill a sense of duty within her. they are of the same homeland && both fought for a cause that they knew they would inevitably lose--- but did so for the good of others.

hijikata toshizo alter

she devoted everything she had to a single individual, kondo isami, the man who took in this WORTHLESS soul && gave purpose to her life. attempted to show her the way of living in the LIGHT. she became her reason for being. her anchor. she owed EVERYTHING to him && so she would do anything to bring his dream to life. if he would be the sun than she the cold darkness of night. while hijikata was demon only in name, alter truly released HELL. by day she functioned as a vice-commander of the shinsengumi. rutheless but devoted to their commander. by night, she pursued criminal activities such as murder, assassination, && other cons to further the shinsengumi. none of it MATTERED so long as kondo && her comrades could achieve his happiness. however, upon discovery of her illegal actions, kondo confronted her in regards to breaking their code. she would have to cease, or by their law take her own life.

however, the confrontation had the opposite effect he had hoped. for one who devoted themselves so deeply, who loved without morality, his words were shattering REJECTION. she was darkness && dirty. she knew from the beginning && she thought he had accepted her that way. she DEFECTED. sabotaging the shinsengumi from within && ultimately attempting to leave their ranks. she lashed out && attempted to RUIN his dream. if only to show kondo how much her actions were NEEDED. were necessary for their survival. never once did she target kondo himself. nor the captains she held dear. 

as expected, she was CAPTURED. && as the law dictates, committed honorable suicide with Sannan Alter acting as her second. the second closest she had beside kondo himself. 

she CANNOT be summoned. she is but a mere ghost of history. not a hero nor a villain. she made no contributions to the shinsengumi that could ever be brought to light. && thus her legend died save for her NAME among their ranks. all which remained being a white ribbon which she wore in her hair, an item which went missing following her execution. 

her hair is WHITE. in contrast to the regular hijikata, yet her eyes remain blue. as she is a GHOST of history. && appears as the main pillar demon in a hypothetical shinsengumi singularity. 

she both HATES && LOVES kondo. to the point of when given the information of his death, she wished for the grail to bring him back--- && thus altered the time period to prevent the shinsengumi deaths && extend the Edo period beyond what it was meant to be.

Race: ( illegitimate )oni - ogre demon

Rebirth: ( hakuouki references ahead ) during one of the many battles fought alongside the shinsengumi during the period of the Satchō Alliance, hijikata toshizo suffered severe losses among his division and separated from his men, suffered grave injuries from his refusal to retreat. desperate to stand his ground and unwilling to suffer another defeat by enemy hands, the vice-commander ingested a crimson vial. drawn to its promise of vitality and strength in order to not just endure, but claim victory. this concoction however, would prove to plague him for the remainder of his days. 

no longer human, the concoction had consisted of the concentrated blood of an unknown oni. it gifted him with the strength to continue living past the defeat of ezo, but came with the heavy burden of life. unable to forgive himself of his own survival in the face of his known comrades’ deaths, and his mortal blood weak to the demonic pounding within. he possesses fits of hunger, cravings beyond imagining that he knows not how to quench. 

Appearance: during such fits of uncontrollable hunger, his raven hair turns pale as moonlight. eyes glimmer like pools of gold, pupils predatory and feline in shape. a small set of horns protrudes from the flesh of his forehead, and canines sharpen into flesh-tearing edges.

the undeniable fact that history would write hijikata as a male is something the servant views as an honor rather than a hit to her own gender. in fact, hijikata herself often addresses herself as male--- utilizing male pronouns in japanese while speaking of oneself or introducing herself. never once has she seen herself as ‘ female ‘. though she recognizes such genders in many others, regarding herself or her comrades gender is irrelevant. she is a warrior before all else.  she possesses little effeminate qualities other than her slight appearance. though she has a love for rabbits && poetry, which might align more to such, she lacks fundamentals found in the image of an ideal woman in japanese culture. she cannot cook--- save for making tea. though she is organized to a degree, she trains and fights as a man, smelling of sweat && blood. she seems quiet && reflective--- but she is definitely rude. && far too willful/foul-mouthed for a bride. 

though she was a farm girl, she lacked all ambition for pursuing knowledge of the trade---&& even paid little heed to her own peddling. kendo was all she had any sort of devotion to until the arrival of kondo into her life. && she finds herself to be rather harsh && strict when dealing with ‘children’. 

she also cannot even see her own image as sexualized. her body is just that-- a body. or at times a weapon if the need should arise. or a shield. she is not the type to make a fuss over anyone else seeing it. there would be no screaming or ‘ take responsibility! ’ one would be lucky enough to fluster this cold demon.

all in all -1/10 waifu material.
