Book Notes: Fantasy Roundup
Or, some ideas for what to read when you have a book hangover from Iron Flame:
Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle
When Emory is the sole survivor of a secret ritual in the caves below Aldryn College, her healer powers, given to those born during the new moon on a rising tide, begin to shift into something strange and uncontrollable. Will her estranged friend Baz, brother to one of the students who died, help Emory figure out her new powers and what really happened that night? This debut fantasy has it all — dark academia, an upper YA that crosses over beautifully into adult, a murder mystery, secret societies, forbidden magic, a pining romance and the most gorgeous book design I’ve seen in a while. The magic system is built around the moon phases and the tides. Curious Tides is book one of a planned duology.
The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon
What happens when Talasyn and Alaric, two soldiers from opposite sides of an entrenched war meet on the battlefield and discover their opposing powers combine to create something entirely new and unexpected? They continue to absolutely hate each other while having to work together to save their people from an even worse fate. Of course. And we all know what happens when two attractive people hate each other. Drawing inspiration from Southeast Asia, debut Filipino author Thea Guanzon has penned a fun, fresh fantasy that balances an authentic depiction of the toll of conflict on a population with a strong cast of characters and all the political machinations of Machiavelli. The Hurricane Wars is book one of a planned trilogy.
Godkiller by Hannah Kane
In a world where gods, fed by the attention, prayers, and offerings of humans, can also be destroyed by them, three disparate people come together to travel to the ruined city that was the last stand in the wars between gods and people. Kissen, a godkiller for hire. Elo, a former knight turned baker. And Inara, a young girl whose life has become intertwined with a god of white lies, Skedi. The four travel together to Blenraden, hopeful that they will find a way to untangle Skedi from Inara. All the feels of quest fantasy with characters that are delightfully flawed and human. The world building was immersive and queer normative with a host of diverse characters. The religious and magic system was at once familiar but with enough twists to make it unexpected. Godkiller is book one of a planned trilogy.
The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab
From page one of The Fragile Threads of Power, I was invested all over again in the world of the four Londons, seven years after the events from The Shades of Magic trilogy (also excellent, if you want to start there). The plot works together like interchanging gears, or a chess game, the movement of each character affecting the others, often unknowingly. There are characters from the original trilogy, new additions, and Tes, the one who, unconsciously, holds the key to everything. Schwab investigates power in this novel -- who has it and who controls it, and by whose standards its morality is judged. Schwab puts a lot of things in motion in this book, and only a few are resolved by the end. The Fragile Threads of Power is book one of planned trilogy. You can always go back and read The Shades of Magic series in the meantime!
What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez
I can’t think of a more fun combination than 1880’s Egyptian archeological digs, a feisty heroine determined to find out what happened to her explorer parents, and a current of magic running through it all. When Inez Olivera hears that her parents, on a dig in Egypt, are presumed dead, she takes matters into her own hands. Inez books passage from Bolivia to Egypt, intent on discovering the truth. What she finds in Egypt is an infuriatingly handsome young man, assisting her guardian in carrying on her parents discoveries, and men thwarting her inquiries at every turn. Add to this a mysterious ring that connects Inez to the magic of the past and the questions continue to pile up. It will take a trip up the Nile and many near escapes just to get Inez closer to any answers. Packed with action, a slow burn romance, and a huge twist kept me enthralled to the very last page. What the River Knows is book one of a planned YA duology.
Hopefully you find one, or many, of these titles to be a satisfying read!

Maybe it wasn’t a complete coincidence that they both end up at the same event, but just calling Yancy any other day seemed too simple. Taking fate into her own hands seemed so much more interesting. How else was she going to make him think the stars aligned at the right time or some other magical astronomic bullshit? Besides, it wasn’t like the mob boss was the only reason she was attending. Surprise surprise, another pompous asshole needed to be killed, and who was she to reject the offer of helping the Earth by burning its useless trash?
She gravitates towards the unnecessarily glamorous bar almost instinctively, and with the way she’s dressed for attention, Hannah can tell she becomes the bartender’s priority with how quickly her drink is brought to her. Typical. Unfortunately for him, there were only two things on her mind at that moment.
Kill the unlucky bastard, and get a certain man wrapped around her finger by the end of the night.
— @perfectly-intoxicated
Yancy has attended so many of these things lately that he can't readily recall what this event is even for. Something related to charity? Nah, a touch too fancy for that, even for this kind of crowd. He's trying to focus on what the two men in front of him are saying until he catches a glimpse of red hair out of the corner of his eye.
Well. Suddenly, he couldn't give less of a shit what they're prattling on about as his gaze moves over Hannah's backside appreciatively.
Excusing himself rather abruptly, he casually makes his way over to the bar. He's dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, hair neatly styled back. Keeping about a foot of space between them, Yancy leans an elbow against the counter as he faces her, an easy smirk on his face.
"Well, hello there. Fancy meetin' you here."

Hannah walked hand in hand with her husband. Since telling him that she wanted to start trying to have kids, their relationship had been over the moon once more. She hated to think that at any moment it could come crumbling down around them like it had the habit of doing. Yet, they were both in such good moods lately it didn't seem likely. At least she hoped it wasn't. "Are you in the mood for any food yet?" She questioned, twisting her lips as she tried to figure out if she were nauseous because she was hungry or for other reasons.

the perks of her job meant commercial flights just weren't a concern anymore. thankfully. she prefers the privacy of a jet, the calmer atmosphere, the intimacy of being one of few passengers to share a space. what she hadn't anticipated were the opportunities flying private would present. "oh- uhm. here?" suggestion present with the touch of their hand to her knee, her heart already palpitating like thunder at the thought of fucking forty-thousand feet above ground. glossy lower lip tugged delicately between her teeth, hannah's expression was evidently serious in her consideration . . . with blushing cheeks and a small smile, she nodded. "yeah, okay- sure. i haven't done this before though, so . . ." blue eyes fix on that of the other, careful to avoid any lingering stares of their present company.

@inkedmuses asked: sneakily — Garrett at Hannah
⸻ "garrett, what are you doing?" hannah hissed to her husband, eyes flickering around the room. thankfully it seemed no one gave them any attention while they sat at the table, waiting for the nhl draft to kick off. they had been invited to show support for the newest bruins draftees and she was no regretting the dress with the little slit in the side.

˚⋆𓇼˚。 𝑪𝑳𝑶𝑺𝑬𝑫 𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑬𝑹 @hannahxsinclair
— JASPER'S APARTMENT, CRYSTAL COVE CONDOS ; PRE-SHARKY'S PARTY
Jasper didn't know how it had taken him so long to think of dressing up as Atticus Finch- one of his all time favourite characters- for Halloween. He imagined that when he was a kid, in some wonderful parallel universe, he might have dressed up as Jem, his grandfather would have been Atticus, and the two would have gone trick or treating together. The thought of it made him smile, but it pained him that he was never able to that kind of thing with any of his family. So this year's costume was a homage to his beloved grandfather and that would have to suffice.
But in this universe, Jasper was getting ready to go to Sharky's party with his daughter. His daughter! This was the first time they had done something together since their initial meeting, which was, even now, like a surreal dream to him. He was still trying to process everything, which was taking longer than he thought it would, but having Hannah in his life was already making it better. He was determined to get to know her, to be there for her, and to form the bond they should have had twenty-odd years ago.
Jasper was currently in the kitchen donned in his cream-coloured suit, the tie of which was draped around his neck and the buttons of his waistcoat were unfastened whilst the replica pair of glasses that Gregory Peck wore in the film adaptation were on top of his head. From where he was stood, he could see Hannah watching the TV, which was in the middle of playing Howl's Moving Castle. Of course they had to put it on- Hannah was dressed as Sophie, so it would be remiss not to have done. And, as it turns out, the pair of them shared a loved for Studio Ghibli films.
He grabbed the unopened pack of Reese's peanut butter cups (he'd learned they were Hannah's favourite so now always had some in the cupboard, even if he would never touch them himself) from the counter and called to her, "has it got to the part where Howl is being melodramatic about his orange hair yet? Oh, and can I get you another drink whilst I'm in the kitchen?"

Hannah had a green thumb and enjoyed tending to plants. She honestly had thought her and Zion would simply have a house full of greenery as their children but she had been unable to convince her husband otherwise. Though he had been able convince her otherwise. Not that she didn't think they'd still have plants but she had recently brought up to him that she wanted children, too. Hannah had just finished tending to one of the plots when she spotted another member, "How's your plot looking?" Hannah approached, wiping her dirt covered hands on her apron.
