{ I've always wondered exactly what Tom Bombadil and Goldberry are. I've always thought they were some forgotten Maiar, some Maiar that went off on their own or something.. now that I'm starting to read Beren and Luthien tho i swear that they are sprites/fays!!! at least to my personal belief, based on the description of fays "The sprites and fays were part of what apparently was a three-fold division of the lesser Ainu spirits: sylphs (spirits of the air), sprites (spirits of the earth), and water spirits." "About them fared a great host who are the sprites of trees and woods, of dale and forest and mountain-side, or those that sing amid the grass at morning and chant among the standing corn at eve." "...their number is very great: yet must they not be confused with the Eldar, for they were born before the world and are older than its oldest, and are not of it, but laugh at it much, for had they not somewhat to do with its making, so that it is for the most part a play for them" The last part is literally... it is literally Tom Bombadil??? I mean.. oldest and fatherless, he doesn't give a shit about anything and laughs at everything, sings all the time, and is clearly very rooted with the earth. "..but laugh at it much, for had they not somewhat to do with its making, that it is for the most part a play for them" This explains perfectly why Tom doesn't care about the Ring, why he'd literally forget about it and throw it away after a while. I'd see Tom as one of the Tavari: "sprites of trees and woods", or "fays of the woods" and Goldberry as one of the Nermir: "fays of the meads" "a fay of the meadows and riverbanks" For them to be lesser, forgotten Ainur would explain their power. I don't know? This little thing just makes sense to me and the description of fays seems perfect for Tom; whether said "fays" were eventually excluded from the final lore or not. Other explanations of Tom seem kinda far-fetched, including my own previous belief that they were Maiar, and this just seems the most canon-consistent thing I could find }
