Writober day 8 - Imagination

When we started...

Feat: @littlesilverplatinum‘s Hikari

“I did the right thing- didn’t I? She really was the only one who could’ve stopped it all...”

Admitedly these daydreams started long before they even set out from Twinleaf town- Hikari wasn’t just his best friend to him for a long time, the cupid did his thing- and he had been shot by a love arrow.

She was beautiful, somehow always looking stunning in his eyes. On top of being such a good friend- in fact, she most definetely is the best person he has ever met in his life so far (so caring, so gentle, so lovable.). If those two reasons weren’t enough to justify falling for her, then her battle skills would seal the deal for him.

The way she battled him with her pokemon- her commands, the timing! It was almost as if she were the living embodiment of his father’s teachings. After every battle- Barry was always left slightly flustered, at a complete loss for words in regards to what he had just witnessed and gone through.

Despite losing every battle with Hikari so far in their journey, he was never put down by it- if anything he only felt even more motivated to keep his chin up and continue aimming to give his best.

The boy dreams of owning all the 8 badges, he dreams of facing the Elite four and becoming the champion alongside Hikari.

He dreams of flattering her with his battle skills- stealing her heart! Have her falling for him! He dreams of a love confession from her!

... He can accept an improvision of it of course, by the looks of it- she has already left him awestruck by these battles... More than once.

In fact- the one point in this journey, he felt the closest to spill everything out to her was at the pokemon contest they both got to compete against each other back at Hearthome city. Everything about that girl was shinning to him- truly, that ribbon belonged to her from the moment she stepped on stage.

Hikari felt like a dawn, the moment the sun shows up in the sky, in his life.

Comforting, supporting, soothing, inspiring- something that couldn’t do any wrong.

This is why after they both defeated Mars and Jupiter together, instead of using the leftovers of his healing items- he opted to tend to her pokemons’ wounds. His faith and hope had been deposited on her.

“Now you go, and kick that lunatic’s ass Hikari!”

... And come back safely.

He had no clue what happened shortly after his departure.

He didn’t stay to watch Cyrus’ madness unfold, nor the portal to the distortion world to be opened, nor Giratina’s reveal and especially not the moment his beloved Hikari stepped into that world.

It is only after Barry steps out of Sunnyshore’s gym that he catches wind of the news, the 8th badge is still sparkling new in his hand- but his mind wasn’t in tune with his achievement at all.

Not when the news on a TV at the pokemon center is reporting on the Mt.Corotnet incident- Cynthia, the champion who had ventured into the distortion world was fine- and talking to the press. But- where is Hikari?

Immediately he feels his chest tighten, his eyes widen- with tears starting to form.

He couldn’t believe in what he was hearing.

‘I regret to inform, but the trainer who accompanied me through the portal- Hikari Otsu... Didn’t make out of it. She died in an accident that was out of my control...’

Right there- his world stopped for a long moment, he couldn’t hear nor feel anything. As all of his memories with her played right there, in front of his eyes- her voice is still crispy and clear within his mind.

He didn’t even realise that people were staring at him, they were all looking at this crying child. Who- as soon as he returns to himself, and realises it simply darts out of the establishment.

There is no longer a dream- his dream ended right there.

Screw the pokemon League, his badges, his accomplishments- what is the point on them? If Hikari is no longer with them?

The boy- who was described as being energetic, who couldn’t stand people being slow- not even in the slightest. Would take a slow regress to back home- taking his time with heading back home.

Eventually within two weeks, he made it to Twinleaf town- which honestly hurt the most to him. Everything about this place- reminded him of her. Barry took a painstakingly slow walking pace towards his home, once by the entrance he knocked on the door- and would be immediately greeted by a much needed tight hug from his mother.

“Ma... She... She... Hikari is...”

“Shh... I know... I know sweetheart...”

Her touch and words are soothing and calming by nature- allowing him to cry on her shoulder, like the child- that he really is.

But having to mourn the love of his life’s passing like a man.
