STEVE'S ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT MORGAN. he hadn't gotten to watch her first couple of years growing up -- time lost in a stupid fight with tony. there was a pang of jealousy that came with pepper &* morgan all together -- the family steve hadn't gotten for himself with tony on top of his complicated relationship with the billionaire. HE'D HAD HIS CHANCE &* GIVEN IT UP FOR BUCKY. he can't regret that entirely -- not when bucky was happy &* healthy &* waiting for steve to get home , wedding band on his left ring finger , same as steve's. his only regret wasn't making amends earlier -- steve was exasperated with his ability to lose time with those he loved.

it had surprised him , too , to be named godfather. IT GAVE HIM THE CLOSURE HE NEEDED WITH TONY , THOUGH. to know the trust was still there after everything. he's grieved tony as much as pepper. it's not been something he's ever hidden from morgan ; he felt no shame at the level of intimacy he had with tony , nor the need to really explain without her asking. maintaining her image of her father was her business , not his. pepper never forbade him from telling her or purposefully hid it , as far as he knows. still ; it's unspoken for the most part. he's always wondered what morgan thinks -- he's very publicly been married to bucky for ... well over a decade now ? time was blurry for the super soldier. it's not as if his orientation , or lack thereof , was any secret. just a part of life. no forbidden topic.

one thing steve &* pepper had forbid , as a unit , was getting into the super-hero gig. steve &* bucky retired a long time ago -- passed on the shield , found a regular prosthetic. it was at the very bottom of steve's list of dream jobs for morgan. sure , she was just as smart as tony , so he had no doubts that she could do even more good than he had , but his one promise to tony post mortem was keeping her safe. he encouraged college because there were ways to honor her dad without shooting lasers. no matter how cool.

❛ I KNEW YOU'D GET IN. that's great , kid. ❜ his smile is genuine &* wide as he leans forward in his seat , arms resting on the table between them. he'd set up a ritual with her , kept in place since she was a kid -- meet him for brunch every sunday at the diner that showed off the clearest view of the avengers tower. he'd come here all the time to draw the architecture that reminded him of home ; tony's eyesore of a skyscraper had ruined his sketches once , but now he found some comfort in it. ❛ is your mom going with you on the tour ? do you want me to come ? i can wear the whole hat &* sun glasses combo to not draw a crowd. ❜ he can't shake the slight eagerness to his voice or the way his brows raise excitedly ; he gives off the golden retriever vibe with her , no matter how much he tries to rein it in to not come off as the clingy dad.

There seemed to be a misconception with most people that because she was living her life, because she was no longer spending her days moping around the house, it meant she was okay. Truthfully, Morgan had spent all of two sessions with the therapist before she'd had to fight the urge to flip him off and promptly cancelled the sessions. She still struggled deeply with her father's loss, re-played his message to her almost daily, questioned if he'd be proud of who she was, but she's not about to tell Steve that.

Morgan had never quite understood their relationship. Her father and Steve's relationship had been complicated according to her mother. She'd asked why he'd named Steve her godfather then and Pepper had struggled with an age appropriate answer, she was sure, and had eventually settled on that despite everything, he knew he could count on Steve to make sure she stayed safe.

When she was younger, the answer had satisfied the heiress but these days. . . not so much. Sometimes Steve spoke about Tony in a way her mother spoke about him and it led her to have questions she's not sure she wants the answer to. She shrugs slightly at Steve's words, giving him a small smile. " Sure. " she agrees with a nod, not really wanting to correct him, not wanting to delve into that conversation. Instead she shrugs, hands pushing into pockets. She changes the subject. " So I applied to MIT like you and mom suggested. " suggested because Morgan had harped on about going to the school her father had the second she found out he went there. " I have a tour on Wednesday, I start in the fall, early admission. I thought you'd like to know. " She should be proud, and she is, in a way, but she questions if this is the right choice, if she's going down the right path.

She'd always wanted to be a hero, like her dad, but Pepper and Steve had expressly forbid her having anything to do with the Avengers, even if she was linked with them forever.
