OHOHOHI GLAD YOU ASKED CAUSE THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN

General Gist: They’re for a game I’m planning that has both a story mode and a free play mode. A roguelite with multiple playable characters but it’s gay and you fight hordes of angels. You unlock the characters via the story mode!

Story modes plot is how their town is slowly being invaded and colonized by hordes of white missionaries seeking to take advantage of the towns location being in a spot where the barriers between the spirit and mortal worlds are weak enough to open rifts between the two.

The main theme I’m exploring is love. How love changes and inspires. With characters love for each other, love for home, even love in faith can inspire them to stand up against tyranny. That love isn’t the same as aimless pacifism or inaction.

There’s quite a lot of them so hope you don’t get lost in it. I can always send you a script over in DMs if you want to read the whole story so far! (It will be subjected to change).

Achilles (any): They’re the ones who spark the domino effect that’s in the story. She’s a recent move in to the town and is an extremely curious kid who is strong and skilled enough with a shovel to take down a several hundred pound angel.

He is determined as hell, though is able to recognize when she needs to stop. Feeling guilty when the trail she was following was a dead end and a hurt person. Also she’s intersex bigender so he’s gender fuckery.

They’re so special to me because we never see intersex characters in media. I wanted to represent so many people I knew and know (I’m questioning intersex!), and they’re the original main character before I turned every teen playable!

Eli (she/they): Achilles online partner before she moved into the town. Unlike Achilles who is patient waiting to strike, she goes all out with a baseball bat. With her motto being “I’m fucking taken them down with me.”

She’s a brutally honest scrappy girl. Willing to argue and stand up to those who she knows is wrong. Standing right next to her friends no matter what. She’s part of the Navajo tribe and is a femby (femme enby!).

Orginally was meant to be a dead partner Achilles grieved, she become so interesting alive that she gets to be in the story alive and well to love.

Stig (they/them): They’re the resident fashion monarch! If anyone knows a thing about fashion it’s them. The want to be stylish also extends to their weapon which is a yo-yo! Fighting with a yo-yo is always impressive and they’re quite a master at it.

They’re understanding and empathetic but can go too far and if they think something is going on, they’re willing to break boundaries. Though always making sure to apologize if they’re wrong. They’re AMAB enby cause we need more of them in fiction. (They also get a romance arc with Achilles and Eli hehe).

Honestly? Wanted to see a lot more AMAB enbies in media and Stig was perfect for it! Fun fact: Stig means owl and with those big shades it’s not hard to see why!

Rook (he/they): A DnD history nerd incarnate, he’s even got a sword he carries around casually. Fighting wise he’s not fast but he’s a wall, knowing exactly to apply pressure with his sword and blocks with it well.

Though you’d think he’d be a meek spineless nerd, he’s very well spoken and knows when to stand up. With bravery being a value he holds close. He does get irritated at times and can snap but makes sure he lets his anger out without hurting anyone. He’s aroace (closest is QP for him), and is Jewish! As well as being adopted by two gay dads, one of them being muslim the other being buddhist.

Originally was one of my most forgettable characters, giving him his current design just hits oomf. Plus is an exercise to writing different faiths and of course we need an aroace character who’s happy about being aroace and can kick serious ass.

Bit (he): He’s all guy! Just with a better coat of paint. A gamer with an ancestral magical spear. Unlike the others who are fast or careful, Bit likes to just go all out stabbing even using it to pierce through multiple angels.

He’s a rough boy, participating in wrestling with his brother. Extremely passionate as well exerting himself 100%. Though he does get blind sighted and the passion he puts in can have colaterral damage. Still he loves those around him. GNC Irish-Scottish transmasc lesbian (he is part of a giant polycule that grows in the story).

A lot of onscreen transmasc representation is all about trying to go masculine heavily. So having a transmasc character who’s genuinely just a boy with breasts is something refreshing to see. (And yes he is inspired by Wally Darling).

Lupi (she/paw): Werewolf time! She’s a werewolf and is connected to the rifts in the town. She fights like a wild animal, grappling onto her foes and crushing their necks to repeatedly biting them.

She’s true to herself and incredibly crafty, able to think outsmart her way through tough situations. Though she’s also highly affectionate, she isn’t above pranking people. Paw is an agender sapphic wolf (and is part of the polycule!).

One of the ones I had so much fun designing, wanted to strike a balance between feral wolf like fake and humanoid in my style was a challenge. However taking the usual bubble mouth in cartoons and interpreting it as a snout did favors!

Harley (she): You’d think she’d be all edge but she’s just a teenage girl trying to make it. Unlike all the others, she fights with genuinely magic! Using a glove she moves her hands to form glyphs on the floor that explode or do other moves!

She’s a goth kid who loves her friend, family and husband*(boyfriend but she and Mit’sa pretend to be married). Though she says unsettling things, it’s all for good show. Behind it all she’s just a sweet devious jokester! But she’s not perfect as she often views herself disconnected from culture and tries too hard to connect at times.

Honestly she’s the character with the most me in it. Story wise she and her sister ran away with their grandpa from the Philippines so that Harley can transition safely and her sister Skyler can be open as a lesbian. Struggling with transness and culture, shes me when I was 13 in the most raw and real ways.

Mit’saidl (he/they): Diego the Explorer as a teenage boy haha! He loves to keep distance and quick on his feet. Equipped with a compound bow he uses rapidly to deliver hard hitting arrows!

He’s an adventurous kind-hearted boy. Though this comes at a fault when it comes to hurting people and not angels. He also loves sharing himself and his culture, often practicing braiding with Harley’s hair as well as teaching her phrases in his language.

While Harley is meant to reflect not being sure culturally, Mit’saidl is the opposite to her in that regards. He knows very well his culture! Infact he’s trans and used the name Mit’saidl as a sort of pun. As he’s Kwakiutl and speaks kwak’wala! It’s a language defined by suffixes for tone and etc. Mit’sa is the word for kiss while idl is the suffix meaning astonished! Meaning when he kisses Harley and she says his name, he smiles knowing how clever and cheeky he is. (Also yes they’re T4T!!! We need more POC T4T!!!)

Sam(he/any): Violinist little guy!! Like his brother he has an incredible passion for music! It also plays into his fighting as the world freezes and he plays a tune and affects all the enemies around him with anything. Plus he’s brothers with Bit!

They’re a bit too optimistic, often believing in the power of authority to help. However he quickly learns that he has to do it himself. He’s a bit hardheaded and stubborn, but it helps him stand by his beliefs.

Not much extra commentary on him. He’s also intersex like Achilles but overall he’s been a character who I love because he’s a little guy.

Victoria(she/pretty): A The pretty princess of the group! And like every pretty princess she gets a big ass sniper rifle! She’s fast and hits hard from distance with it.

Though she is definitely self-absorbed, she knows what to fight for. She is actually incredibly keen and logistic. Able to deduce when shit is up. She values her achievements and awards, but when face with the choice to give her friends up or her awards. She’d pick her friends

She’s canonically NPD (I got NPD!) Don’t have a set gender or sexuality but she’s like “I’m so fucking cool.” However story wise she’s grieving her dad, with her and her sister in the story being exploration of different grief types.

“Does Fairy Tail respect women?”

Oh, you celebrated Intermational Men’s Day last year on November 19th, but not International Women’s Day on March 8th? Chauvanist pig!

I remember it like it was a few years ago. I was catching up with the Tartarus arc and Erza was fighting Minerva in her "Nakama hakama". Someone walked in on me watching this part and made a passing remark on how the series doesn’t seem to be respecting to women.

I didn't know how to respond..

And that's weird. Like, given my track record with the series, you'd think I'd able to agree with this sentiment. But I can't fully agree with it, even as I don't fully disagree with it.

If you don't know, I did "reviews" (they were more like reactions) of the chapters in the Alvarez arc when they came out. At first, a rally big complaint I would regularly have with chapters is how female characters are framed in panels. At times, it's obvious that he wants his readers to be aroused by his female characters, rather than try to empathize with them. It got to a point where I got frustrated with it and had to stop making the joke as it was becoming stale to make.

Of course, that's only in how characters are framed. When it comes to the outfits, this becomes a worse issue. It's one thing when the Star dress for the water-themed spirit is a bikini and the maid-themed spirit's dress is a maid outfit. (Someone did a redesign of both and I think that's a bit too much.) But did so many outfits really need boob windows? (Also something, something bikini armor battle damage.)

And don't get me started on certain events. Consider that they didn't walk in on Erza's torture scenes only episodes before. There's plenty of other examples of this kind of thing involving several characters. Especially involving the main female lead of the series to a disturbingly high amount. It's stuff like this that makes it hard for me not to empathize with this sentiment. 

Here’s another fun story. I was on my college campus reading one of the newer chapters of Fairy Tail. When I told my friends that, one of them noted that it sounds like a title for porn. I dismissed the comment, but was kind of embarrased by my inability to defend the series on that aspect. Especially considering I had just finished reading the Christmas special.

At the same time, I feel as though some of the complaints come from the wrong outlook on things. Like, some people will say it's wrong for Lucy and Natsu to not have the same kind of fight results. While I think Lucy could have had better ends to her fights, I don't think it's good to compare the two as they have different functions and character arcs within Fairy Tail. As I often say, Lucy is to Natsu what Dr. Watson is to Sherlock Holmes (or what Robin is to Chrom for the gamers among you).

And to be blunt, some of this has to deal with Hiro Mashima being a writer for a magazine aimed at young boys. Are they interested in female characters with depth and intrigue? I'd like to hope so. But it's not like they wouldn't be turned off by sexy girls, even if they don't have much else to them. (I say that as if I don't know women with similar feelings towards female characters.)

But, that feels wrong to say about the women in Fairy Tail. I mean, Mashima's not the best writer of either male of female characters in shonen, even and almost especially in his chosen niche of battle action shonen series (an aspect of this discussion that I don't think gets enough consideration). But for as many complaints as can be levied against him, I think there is good to be said of how handles his women.

Team Natsu has a male to female ratio that puts its contemporaries to shame. By the fourth arc of the series, the team of two girls, two guys, and Happy is established as the "main group" And once Wendy and Carla join the team, the team balance is more towards female members than male.

And they're by no means just pieces or meat or pretty faces. Wendy is argued to be one of the best-written characters in the series and has one of the most dynamic growths of any member of the main cast. Comparing her during her introduction in Nirvana arc to her during one of her fights in the latter half of the series is near jarring to see. And considering we're on this side of Hero's, the idea that Lucy is weaker than Wendy has been obvious since Tartarus.

But for her part, Lucy's exploits have been criminally underrated by fans and critics alike. Some of my favorites include singlehandedly defeating Love and Lucky, figuring out the second half of the S-Class Exam and coming up with the plans at least partially responsible for defeating Zeref and Acnologia. If we're a bit looser with what counts as a "Lucy accomplishment", she shuts the Eclipse Gate with Yukino, her future self figures out how to defeat the dragons and is responsible for rallying members of Fairy Tail in the anime. Just because she isn't taking out the big bads directly doesn't mean her actions don't move the plot of arcs of effect the main story.

And, then there's that woman, Erza. When the topic of "strong female characters" in anime comes up, I can imagine Erza as the type of character one would think of. They think of the type of female character that has no flaws. She beats all the enemies that she faces without breaking a sweat. The only people that don't like her are bad guys. Many people have rightly brought attention to how, to varying degrees, these are true of Erza.

But, it would be wrong to put Erza in the same league as [insert example here]. The whole point of her arc in the Tower of Heaven, the arc that gives the greatest focus on Erza, is all about how Erza isn't as strong as people think she is. She has a personality with more settings than "stoic heroine". She's shown to soften up and even be incompetent several times.

While it's easy to look at her fake wins, they aren't always as easy as one may argue. Yes, she's able to beat Kyouka without using her senses. However, she doesn't stop her from activating Face. Yes, she punches Deus Sema with almost all of her bones broken. However, she needs help to hurt Irene after and isn't directly responsible for her death. She's not sweeping all her enemies easily and without trying. [Use your imagination at who I'm attacking with this.]

And that's just regarding the members of the Strongest Team. This doesn't go into Mirajane, a fellow S-Class mage with her own set of complex feelings. This doesn't go into Juvia who, despite all that could be said regarding Gray, is a strong mage in her own right and whose arc is also underrated. I could talk about them and how Mavis is the first master of the guild or Irene is the mother of dragon slayers or Anna is the architect of the Eclipse Project, and so on.

I could even go into some of the stuff that's happened in other Mashima works. I could go into stuff like having all four of Eden’s Shining Stars become female in his current running work. I could also just start gushing about why I like Elie from Rave Master so much and how anyone who says she’s just like Lucy or Rebecca is objectively wrong. Heck, Mashima made Starbiter Satsuki, a one-shot with a female lead, and it may be one of his best works.

Again, this isn't to say Mashima is somehow a feminist champion among writers of shonen manga. Remember that I started this post off by admitting many of the issues with his portrayal of women. It's near undeniable that Mashima treats women differently than his male characters and many of those ways are negative. I'm not here to deny any of that.

At the same time, I feel like the ways that Mashima has elevated women in his work have been severely underrated and ignored. It doesn't undo the bad he's done on that, as some would argue. But it's not absent from his work. I believe your view on this is a matter of what you want to emphasize more about this aspect.

And, thus, we return to the scene that inspired all of this. If Erza fighting in what many would consider an impractical outfit is what matters most to you, I get that you'd think Mashima doesn't respect women. If seeing arguably the strongest woman in the series fight to save a fellow victim of abuse from demonic influence, you'd probably say otherwise. Even as I see merit in both views, I lean more towards the latter.

How to Handle a Nico - Even Under a Love Curse, There’s No Way I Would Be Like This

Primary Pairing: NicoMaki Words: ~1.5k Rating: T Time Frame: Maki is in med school. Nico is working as an idol producer. They are living together as a couple, but not married yet. Story Arc: Stand Alone

Author’s Note: I must thank VNVdarkangel for help in giving a title to this chapter; I was honestly stumped. But this title gives it un certain anime’esque je ne sais quoi, if you will.

“Manga?” Maki asked, glancing over at the tablet her girlfriend was holding. “Haven’t seen you read that kind of stuff in a while.”

“Doujin.” Nico corrected, swiping to advance the page.

“Same difference?”

“In art style, sure, but not in publication.”

“Hrm… Hey, that girl looks like… me?”

Nico giggled.

“And why is she… What the heck?”

Nico laughed heartily.

“I don’t get it.”

“It’s my doujin, Maki-chan.”

“You drew a doujin?”

“Well, no, I actually commissioned it.” Nico amended. “And this is really just a proof of concept, not her finished product.”

“Her?”

“The artist I commissioned. She’s a former school idol, which is how I came across her work.” Nico explained. “One of her friends from that group works with Egao now.”

“Hrm…”

“She’s been drawing her own doujin for a little while now but hit a snag and decided to take a small hiatus. During that time, she opened commissions and I liked her work, so I got one. Uhm…” She scrolled through a folder. “Here it is.”

“You had her draw us from one of our old photoshoots?”

“Uh huh. Cute, isn’t it?” Nico grinned. “Brings back memories.”

“Yeah…” Maki studied the drawing on display. “I remember liking that set.”

“Anyway, the picture gave me some ideas, so I reached out to her again and asked if she’d be willing to work a bigger project.” Nico switched back to the doujin. “And this is what we came up with. Wanna read it?”

“Sure.” Maki accepted the tablet. It felt odd reading a story about a fanciful version of herself, but the artwork immediately pulled her in. “What the heck? ‘How to Handle a Maki’? I don’t get it. What kind of title is that?”

“A fitting one. Nico is left trying to figure out how to deal with Maki’s curse, after all.”

“Curse?”

“Sorry, spoilers…” Nico held up her hands apologetically.

Maki pursed her lips. For some reason, the name bugged her more than it probably should. Perhaps it was because it sounded familiar? But why would it be familiar? Odd…

“And Nozomi is in this too?” She asked after a few pages.

“Yup.” Nico confirmed. “And Eli. And Kotori. Umi, Rin and Hanayo have only been mentioned in name thus far, but they’ll probably appear later. I forget what her girlfriend had planned for Honoka.”

“Girlfriend?”

“The artist’s girlfriend is really into fantasy games and whatnot. She’s been a big help in coming up with ideas for worldbuilding, character design and plot points. There are a couple Easter egg jokes and references to gaming that were her suggestions.”

“I see.” Maki continued to read. “Wait, do I still think you’re younger than me?”

“Maybe?” Nico shrugged. “Not really sure how to take care of that just yet. Maybe it can just happen off panel at some point.”

“And one meal is all it took for me to become obsessed with your cooking?”

“Are you gonna deny that’s what happened in real life?”

Maki deadpanned at her girlfriend, earning a laugh.

“Well, maybe not just one…” The redhead tried to save face.

“Then definitely by the second.” The raven-haired girl decided.

“… Maybe…” Maki conceded.

“Nico knows how much Maki-chan loves her cooking.”

Well, there really was no denying that fact.

“Did they have coffee in medieval times?” Maki inquired a moment later.

“No idea.” Nico admitted. “But I know Maki-chan can’t face the day without it, I figured just alluding to it without naming it might work.”

“I suppose…” Maki furrowed her brow. “Are you trying to scam or cheat me?”

Nico blinked in confusion until she saw the page. “Nico is a professional saleswoman!” She huffed. “She would never cheat a customer. She knows Maki-chan can afford better gear than your average novice adventurer and she knows what upgrades will be most beneficial.”

“Also, what’s a grue?”

“An excuse to force players to bring light sources, I guess.” Nico shrugged. “That’s one of those gamer jokes I mentioned.”

“And the gazebo?”

“Another joke.”

“I see. And why does Kotori have a lion?”

“She’s a Beastmaster.”

“Ok, but again, why a lion?”

“Because she had one in the original photoshoot.”

“Oh yeah, that’s right, she did.” Maki’s memory was jogged a bit. “She was part of the focus pair, with Eli, right?”

Nico nodded. “And you were paired with Rin as the secondary.”

“Is that why I’m friends with her here?”

“Rin? Not really, I don’t think.” Nico shook her head. “I mean, yeah, you two are friends, but through Hanayo. I think they’ll appear in the next chapter and we’ll get to explore how you know each other better.”

Maki nodded and continued to read. “Say, why don’t you call the harpy what it is?”

“Because you don’t know what it is.”

“Yes, I do.” Maki furrowed her brow.

“I mean your character doesn’t”

“Why wouldn’t my fantasy character know what a harpy is when she lives in a fantasy world where they actually exist?”

“Because she was raised in the city and is only now becoming an adventurer.” Nico explained. “She’s not ignorant, she just knows stuff better suited for an urban life as opposed to someone out in the rural areas. Not much different than real life, right?”

“I suppose…” Maki reached the part she had seen earlier and frowned. Her girlfriend noticed and giggled. But upon seeing the next page, she sighed. “Ok, the glomping was one thing, but climbing into bed with you? After having barely known you a day?”

“Two days, I believe.” Nico pointed out, ignoring the deadpan stare directed at her. “And it’s because of the curse.”

“Yeah, but even under a love curse, there’s no way I would be like this.”

Nico smirked.

“What?”

“I should really record you drunk sometime.”

“I still…”

“Oh, c’mon, Maki-chan, I’ve even told you about your drunken clinginess before.”

“Mmm…”

“And your half-asleep clinginess.”

“…”

“And your…”

“Alright, alright, I get it…” Maki didn’t want to admit the memories that were swirling around in her head.

“I’ve always found it cute, by the way.” Nico pointed out.

“You’re not finding it cute here.”

Nico chuckled. “That’s because it isn’t real, it’s because you’re under an idol curse.”

“You mean a love curse.”

“An idol curse.”

Maki rolled her eyes. “Are you intentionally baiting me into making a snarky comment about idols?”

“Maybe.” Nico stuck out her tongue.

Maki sighed. “And let me guess, you’re going to have me be all embarrassed about it later.”

“Well that’s how Maki-chan is in real life. And a flustered Maki-chan is an adorable Maki-chan.”

As if on cue, Maki could feel heat in her cheeks. She really should be used to Nico’s teasing by now, but the older girl rarely failed to get a reaction out of her. And though she wasn’t fond of how predictable her reactions were, she couldn’t really fault Nico for seeking them. After all, Maki also loved Nico’s own flustered expressions.

“So,” Nico asked as the last page was reached “what did you think?”

“It was entertaining.” Maki admitted. “Was this posted online?”

“Not yet.” Nico shook her head. “She just sent this to me for approval. She hasn’t even posted it on her own site yet.”

“Hrm…”

Nico chuckled. “Don’t worry, anyone at the hospital who reads this kind of stuff will like it and won’t think you’re weird or anything.”

It never ceased to amaze Maki how well her girlfriend could read her.

“But we can keep it private if we want.” Nico added.

“No, it’s fine, I guess…” Maki decided. “And you said there was going to be another chapter?”

“Or Two. Or more. Depends on how many ideas we have.” Nico grinned. “Because you know we can’t leave things like this. We can’t let Maki-chan only love Nico because of a curse! It needs to be natural! Just like in real life.” She leaned over to nuzzle into her girlfriend’s side. “Although even if we’re trying to keep things realistic, we also can’t keep the readers waiting for years…”

Maki furrowed her brow as she realized what Nico meant. “I didn’t mean…”

“I know. I know” Nico interrupted, making dismissive motions with her free hand. “Maki-chan’s just a little romantically dense is all. And we figured things out eventually and got together and we’re all good now.” She turned her head and pushed herself up so she could plant a kiss on the redhead’s cheek.

“Uhm… You know it’s getting kind of late…” Maki said softly.

“Hmm?”

“Well, I have class in the morning and…”

Nico grinned. “Is Maki-chan hinting that she wants to climb into bed with Nico?”

“Maybe…”

Nico laughed. “Maki-chan is being unusually shy tonight. She has no trouble seducing Nico but is embarrassed to request a snuggle session?”

Maki pouted, earning more laughter.

“So, to bed it is.” Nico said, pushing herself up and off the couch. “But how about a bath first?” She turned to offer a hand to her girlfriend.

“Alright.” Maki agreed, accepting the help up before following Nico down the hall.

Rak’s Ultimate Degrassi Sorting - 5-12

You thought I wouldn’t drag this out to Saturday, didn’t you?

This is the ‘they’re amazing but I play favorites’ tier. Everyone here is really good at presenting something, but just not as good as my top four.

Imogen and Jane were just overall good assist characters. Having to be weird or cool (respectively) and keep the audience engaged without being too far or too much. Jane had one amazing plot to her name, but her appearances in other plots is what got her here. Imogen is just so flexible at her involvement that she could be whatever was needed, and believably.

And it was a lot of work not to use a shot of her in the nun costume.

Miles, Esme, Zoe, and Bianca had plot arcs. Good ones. Ones that you could easily feel and completely feel as they ran. Miles from NC1-3, Esme in NC4 alone but it was so good, Zoe had two (S14 and NC1-2), and  Bianca from S10-S12. The character in those arcs were really well maintained and their growth was easy to spot when you got to the end of them.

And that leaves Clare and Yael. Clare is here mostly for S10, S12, and the latter half of S14. Although Innocent when you Dream is still my favorite filler episode of all time. Like, on point Clare is so good. And trashfire S11, S13-14 Clare is... fine. Like, it wasn’t great, but it didn’t actually offend me the way that Eli in S13-14 was a problem. Because it wasn’t Clare’s character that suffered, it was Clare suffering a terrible plotline.

Yael is the only one of the gamers to feel... like a character who has a future. Because their character got properly rehabilitated by showing they have actual human emotions. And they didn’t get screwed over by a sudden downturn in NC4 (Hunter). Or just... not being interesting (Vijay and Baaz). I feel they have a lot of potential, and I will be super sad if we don’t see where it goes whenever Degrassi comes back.
