As the son of a small lord from a tiny stretch of land, Petyr had little prospects until his father used the friendship he made with Hoster Tully to have the boy fostered at Riverrun. There, he grew up alongside Lord Tully’s children. As he grew older, he fell in love with Catelyn Tully, and when her wedding to Brandon Stark was announced, he challenged him to a duel for her hand. The duel left him bloodied and near death, and he was given a fortnight to recover before he was sent back to the Fingers. A few years later, Lysa Tully, now married to Jon Arryn, convinced her husband to give Petyr a minor sinecure at Gulltown. There, Petyr proved his talent with numbers and coins by tripling the town’s income. A reason why Lord Arryn brought him to King’s Landing as Master of Coins. He served in this position under King Robert and King Joffrey. Bringing the Tyrells of Highgarden to the crown’s side granted him the title of Lord of Harrenhal. After King Joffrey’s death, Petyr traveled to the Vale to marry the now widowed Lysa Tully, bringing Sansa Stark as his disguised bastard daughter, Alayne.
