TRYING SO HARD, he’s trying so hard to push past the hybrid, small hands reaching out past for the burning building that lied on the horizon. And decorating its remaining nooks, crannies, gaps that faintly illuminate the room, were the remainder of a population no more. RED EYES GLEAMED THROUGH THE DARKNESS, something that terrified Tails to the core, but it wasn’t something he could accept. Not anymore. Not when he could CHANGE IT.

HE’D FAILED THEM SO MANY TIMES BEFORE. HE COULDN’T DO IT AGAIN. THERE HAD TO BE SOMEONE, ANYONE, HE COULD SAVE -

HEADCANON DUMP, 002 - DEFECTOR VERSE:

This is a verse in which Tails had the strength to follow his heart, leave the Eggman Empire and side with the resistance.

Because he’s been with Eggman so long, he knows the procedres, bases, passwords (granted a lot of them are probably changed by now), mechs - all like the back of his hand. He’s your go-to Eggman expert, as well as lowkey resident fanboy.

Unfortunately, he has those routines drilled into him. He isn’t used to having less responsibility, and even gets antsy when he doesn’t get similar workloads to what he had.

No matter how much he hides it, and like most people back home, Tails misses Eggman. This man raised him for a good chunk of his life and nothing will make him forget that. In his weaker moments, sometimes he thinks about going back, but he knows that’s not a good idea.

Tails feels uneasy about his role in the resistance; because of his history, he doesn’t feel trusted around everyone else, whilst simultaneously feeling he doesn’t deserve such trust.

❝ Does anyone even want me here? ❞ that question couldn’t help but slip out, the fox’s blue eyes lost in solemn thought. Time to himself, work completed - he’d ran out of distractions, and the anxious waves of self-doubt were rolling in. He’d seen the way some people looked at him, regarded him with suspicion, or maybe he was just overanalyzing it. Who knew? ❝ ...sometimes I think about just going. ❞

Although Tails goes through a wardrobe change in the Defector verse, the bottom half of his clothing doesn’t change, including his shoe style. This is because he not only misses home but doesn’t want to (and feels he doesn’t have the right to) forget everything he’s done and been through, so won’t swap them for any other pair. He’s sentimental and guilty and even that deters his ‘happy ending’.

There was a look of doubt in the kitsune’s eyes, and he looked away, frowning deeply. He pondered the answer, but then seemed to quickly dismiss it. He turned away, looking at the ground with his hands dug in his pockets. Sure, people said it, but did they MEAN IT? And if they meant it - well, it felt like a mistake to him.

TAILS’ GAZE AVERTED AT HER QUESTION, expression dulled and feelings that of shame. Over what? Who knew. Perhaps it was leaving her behind; leaving his family behind. Maybe it was living the life he knew deep down he never deserved. Maybe it was knowing he’d never live up to the heroes he looked up to. NEITHER OF THEM.

His shoulders slumped, facing her once more.

All that time - all that time he’d spent assisting the misery of the world... it feels so odd, so UNDESERVED, that he’s here now. This was what he wanted, right? Then why did he feel like such an out-of-place puzzle piece? Why couldn’t he come to terms with the fact he was ATONING? ❝ ...How did you just start over like that? ❞
