Maryland’s fast-rising heavy alt-rockers SAVAGE HANDS are currently gearing up to head off on the band’s eagerly-anticipated North American tour with WHILE SHE SLEEPS. Just above a scorching sonic fusion of alternative experimentation, metallic energy, and rock appeal, SAVAGE HANDS detail the trials and tribulations of addiction, deceit, depression, and heartbreak. The Maryland quintet, consisting of Michael Garrow [vocals], Justin Hein [guitar], Nathan O’Brien [guitar], Jayvon Green [bass], and Alex Gacek [drums]—paint poignant pictures without pulling any punches on their 2020 full-length debut, 'The Truth In Your Eyes'. “We worked really hard on trying to create memorable moments in each song,” says Michael. “The lyrics and melodies were the main focus. It was about doing something a little different. All of the stories on the record point towards truth and lies. If you look at someone, their eyes will often reveal the truth, even if they don’t say it. We tried to take some risks and really just strive to be us.” The metalcore-infused-alternative-rock outfit introduced a singular identity on the 2018 EP, 'Barely Alive'. The project quietly put up nearly 2 million total streams in less than a year as they attracted early praise from the likes of Alternative Press who claimed, “it’s the lyricism that channels the most emotion.” In between touring with the likes of WAGE WAR, PALISADES AND KUBLAI KHAN, they signed to SharpTone Records and began work on what would become 'The Truth In Your Eyes'. SAVAGE HANDS built a full studio at Michael’s place and recorded these eleven tracks alongside producer Andrew Baylis [MY ENEMIES & I, SYLAR]. Ultimately, SAVAGE HANDS present a whole new story for heavy music with heart-wrenching honesty.

So these next few nights we'll run the selections, finalists and winners clips every other night.

Barring another pandemic, global power outage or alien invasion, Transparent 3 will take place in NYC at The Producer's Club Thursday April 8th through 10th. One of the programs will be The Winners From 2020.

We would love to see more features, as well as follow up episodes in the TV Pilot Category. We will be providing a waiver/discount code for filmmakers who submit a second episode to Transparent 3 (2021).

Over this next year, we will continue to build out our streaming channel (TransparentFilmFestival.com). It's a great time to join if you haven't already. So support us as we promote the best in True Indie.

We have just had confirmation that New York City will not be reopening for "Phase 2" (meaning bars and nightclubs), before at best, June 15. Accordingly, that precludes us from putting on a live screening this year.

The winning films as well as Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress will be announced on the next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Friday night May 8th) at 9pm EST.

A program will be added to Transparent 3 (April 2021) that will include the winners from Transparent 2 (this year's festival). All winners from Transparent 2 will be included at the Transparent 3 Awards Ceremony.

Let's hope these assholes don't find a way to kill us all before then. Keep making art... or die trying.

Apr 23, 2020, 11:49 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Just to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with on almost a daily basis.... An email from someone who hasn’t been following since October...

"...Have any films dropped out by any chance? We would love to screen. Has the festival been canceled? I’d still love to know why the movie wasn’t accepted. Between the 20 best picture awards we’ve already won and (they name drop a TV show) coming to an end and our lead actor being the star of (they name drop the same TV show) (and all over the media right now), I’m trying to understand the logic..."

Our response is this... Just so there’s no confusion...

We don’t care who you know, how many awards you won, how many people could “pack our screenings”, etc. We don’t need to explain our logic to you. We screen every film from beginning to end, let you know when we watched it and post screen grabs. The films make it to a second round and then go to our judges (who have Emmys and Grammys - one had an Oscar but he died), and they make the decisions not the festival organizers.

As far as when the finalists will be screened, that’s up to Governor Andrew Cuomo. If that doesn’t happen in May, we will do a show similar to the last one (The Finalists Episode), of Transparent Film Festival Presents the last weekend of May where we will announce the winners.

One final thought. Network Television sucks and all 5 of the TV Pilots in that category are just as good (if not better) than the show you referenced.

Do the math. And factor in features. So our concept was, start a festival, get qualified judges, watch every frame and prove it by showing on Facebook that we watched your film and when, let the filmmakers know what we thought. Here are the best of the best, of the best. In some cases we’re still arguing (Best Short and Best Actress). We’ll keep you in the loop. We started The Transparent Film Festival because, as filmmakers, we were tired of getting ripped off. Ripped off by “film festivals” collecting submissions fees and sending us a form letter. The show will feature the two finalists in each category. We can tell you that the choices have been made in all film categories but the SHORTS category where there is an intense debate going on. In Bet Feature, Documentary, Mobile, Foreign, Performance, and Horror - we have narrowed the field. And it was hard!!!! 3. Transparent Film Festival 2020 is coming to a close.

We want to thank everyone for what will surely be a most memorable film festival. We screened every frame of close to 300 films, provided our notes and ratings, and chose the films we thought were the best of the best. Then, the Coronavirus.

We will leave the programs up until 11:59 pm PCT (Pacific) to accommodate all those great films from California and Vancouver.

Tomorrow (Monday), we'll send out an update as to what happens next. We will post here, as well as email everyone.

One of the things we’re hearing back is how impressed each of you are - with EVERYONE ELSE that they’re competing against. We’ve given out comps to approximately half the filmmakers. The rest I guess don’t know or didn’t care.

We posted several months ago, that completing your film is only the beginning. Making money and being successful in the business, is a whole ‘nother thing. Interacting with and collaborating with others, learning and teaching others, attending screenings and the film markets and making connections, and so on.

If you think that people are just going to drop out of the sky and love your film, good luck. 😉 However, seeing the methods and techniques utilized by your fellow filmmakers, is alone worth the price of admission. The All Access Subscription for $25 (for a year!!!) is like a semester of film school. That’s how incredible these films are. And they are from all over the world. Especially the foreign films competition, it’s mind-boggling.

You can’t become a successful filmmaker in a vacuum.

We want to thank all of our judges, techs and staff for helping us pull this off at this most difficult time. That's how much we honor all of you.

Several filmmakers have now received their comp to the program in which their film is screening. We have verified with several of you already that the process works. The comps are just that, for you. However, please understand we have excellent analytics.

Anyone trying to use a comp email login from multiple IP addresses, will have their access revoked - and their film removed from the competition.

It takes a lot of time to set this up, for each individual comp. This is why we aren't just automatically adding people unless they requested access. It would take more time than we have, especially with a skeleton staff due to the virus.

As we said in our email to all filmmakers, whose films are screening as part of the festival - YOU MUST REQUEST YOUR COMP BY MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (EST - NYC Time).

Now for a bit of bad news.

A friend of the festival with whom some of us worked back in November, has died of the Coronavirus. So, there's that.

We will check in again just before the official start of the festival at midnight tonight and make sure every filmmaker who has requested a comp for their program, has one.

5 QUICK FACTS re TRANSPARENT 2020 (COVID-19 Version)

As New York City is on "lockdown", we will continue with our festival online. When restrictions are lifted and it is deemed safe to hold our festival, we will get new dates and hold our live film festival event.

The film festival will take place here: www.transparentfilmfestival.com

Filmmakers please take note:

1. We need your 1920 x 1080 compressed movs or mp4s no later than 5 pm Tuesday to be included in the festival (online). There will be no exceptions. We have to sequence several programs. Programs will be a mix of genres and will time at approximately 3 hours each.

2. Films that screen online will be given priority with respect to the live festival when scheduled. This means that we don't know what's going to happen in the future with the pandemic situation and what we're going to have access to in the future. However, those films that screen this weekend, will be given first consideration if and when the live festival is scheduled.

3. Films that screen online as part of the festival will be uploaded to TransparentFilmFestival.com. After the festival, all films selected and uploaded for the 2020 Transparent Film Festival will be promptly deleted UPON NOTIFICATION BY SUBMITTING FILMMAKER.

4. There will be two types of digital tickets available: The first is per program and the second is for "ALL ACCESS" which will allow for the viewing of all festival content.

5. Each filmmaker taking part in the online festival will receive 1 comp to view the program in which their film is included. To receive your comp access, or if you have any questions at all, please email us at transparentfilmfestival@gmail.com.

We're dealing with a lot, more than most being in New York. Please watch the Selections Special Show (below). There are a handful of selections that will be added, clips from which will be included in next Friday night's Best in Category Nominations Special.

In light of the current situation (Coronavirus), we want to make sure we honor our commitment to our filmmakers.

Film Freeway is supposed to notify filmmakers on March 22. Just in case, we are providing screenshots of our dashboard, showing our ratings. Every single filmmaker has individually received an email during the past year with our notes and ratings.

Transparent Film Festival Ratings Guide

SELECTED - BLUE FLAG (Priority for live screening) Will receive Selected and Nominations laurels and will screen live (pending venue considerations in light of the pandemic).

SELECTED - PURPLE FLAG Will receive Selected laurels and is scheduled for live screening (pending venue considerations in light of the pandemic).

GREEN FLAG - (With a Trophy Rating) Will not screen live but will receive Semi-Finalist laurels. May have a performance nomination for Best Actor or Best Actress.

GREEN FLAG - Will not screen live but will receive Semi-Finalist laurels, and offered to screen online.

ORANGE FLAG Not selected for live screening but will receive Honorable Mention laurels, and offered to screen online.

RED FLAG Just not for us.

NOTES ON SELECTION: 1. Some films marked “Not Selected” - would have been selected, but the filmmakers did not respond to our requests.

2. The first film (Exit 0) and the last film (Gravediggers) were both Selected.

Filmmakers please read.

NYC has closed down. We will be most likely postponing the live screenings however, we will screen the selected films online on Friday Night April 3rd and Saturday Night April 4th at the same times as they would have screened.

This will also be the same order that they will screen not if, but WHEN we secure our new dates at the same venue - the Producers Club - which has been paid for in full.

We will also be able to screen additional films that deserve the selection laurels because they are that well produced, but wouldn't have been able to screen live due to time constraints. We were going to get a 3rd day, but then things changed in a hurry.

A good thing is that we will be able to screen more features instead of only when.

We will let you know about new dates (if indeed we need to postpone the live screenings) as soon as the danger from COVID-19 has passed. But for now, all entertainment venues in NYC are closed, and no public gatherings with more than 10 people are permitted. So it's out of our control.

THAT SAID.... we will be airing our Selections Special this Friday night right here on Facebook while doing watch parties with about 20 filmmaking groups at 8PM EST.

The first selections have been announced.

We keep getting emails from some of you mistakenly thinking that your film has already screened, like in some online festival.

When we do a post about your film, with stills, and a screened on day and date, that is just the proof of our having watched (or “screened”), your film.

What sets us apart from every other festival (and why we are a top 100 festival on Film Freeway), is because we can document when we watched your film. If you want, you can cross reference with Vimeo or YouTube analytics for that day, so you can see we watched your entire film.

Generally, the more screen grabs, the more we liked your film. Though this is not always the case.

The festival itself is on Friday night, April 3rd, and Saturday night April 4 with a party after the Awards Ceremony.

Selections will first be announced on the Friday night March 20 episode of Transparent film Festival presents.

We've been pretty busy believe it or not, SINCE THE FESTIVAL ENDED! We've been approached by several potential sponsors including one of the large Automobile Manufacturers for Transparent 2020.

We're trying our best to get everyone their customized laurels - because you all deserve them. That said...

We've received about 1/3 of the downloads so far for the Live Event.

Some filmmakers who were chosen as finalists.... their emails bounced. Others who were chosen as finalists haven't acknowledged their status.

We're going to have a real short leash because everything is about putting on a show now.

Please get your download links at 1920x1080 with reasonable compression by the end of this week at the latest. We need to test on the screen.

City guide: Attractions in Chester

With its own historic racecourse and a unique shopping experience, the Roman city of Chester is packed with pastimes both ancient and modern. Here’s our city guide to help you make the best of a trip

Despite, or perhaps as a result of, being well and truly outgrown by neighbouring Liverpool and Manchester, Chester arguably retains far more history and charm than both. Its claims to fame are so numerous that on several counts it puts even the capital to shame.

Chester’s history extends almost two millennia, beginning life as a Roman fort known as Deva and named after the River Dee at its heart. Thanks to a large harbour and imposing city walls, it was one of the most important settlements of the time, until the Dark Ages, when Viking raiders sailed up the river in their longships and attacked.

Following the Norman invasion in 1066, William I created the first Earl of Chester, who constructed Chester Castle. While the city thrived as a trading port, the Rows were built – streets of galleried shops that today makes Chester one of the most compact shopping destinations in the UK. The English Civil War starved the city’s population until they surrendered, whereupon geological rather than societal evolution became the governing power in the remapping of Chester.

The harbour gradually silted up and the port was virtually gone by the Georgian era. Elegant new houses were built to house wealthy merchants, and the county town of Chester bloomed in the Victorian period.

Now, though rich with history, Chester also attracts rowdy racegoers and shrewd shoppers to enjoy its modern-day entertainment, cultivating a lively yet leisurely atmosphere. Its array of architecture makes it one of the prettiest cities in Europe, as voted by readers of USA Today.

1 Roman city walls

Chester’s Roman walls alone are reason enough to come to the city. Not only are they the most complete in Britain – Chester retains the full circuit of its ancient defences – they are also the longest and oldest in Britain, dating back almost 2000 years in some parts. With panoramic views over the city and Cheshire, once enabling Roman soldier patrols and medieval archers to spot threats from afar, today the walls can be freely accessed at Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate and Bridgegate. http://www.visitcheshire.com

2 The Roodee

During the Roman occupation, most of the present-day racecourse was underwater, part of the harbour that supplied the garrison of Deva. Centuries after the Romans left, an island developed where a cross was built, hence the name, which means “Island of the Cross”. In 1539, the mayor introduced an annual horse race here and the racecourse was born. www.chester-races.com

3 The Rows

700 years old and half-timbered, the Rows in Chester are not only unmatched around the world but they contain a bounty of distinguished boutiques and engender a bustling café culture. These high galleries can be reached via steps at street level and though some are Victorian copies, look out for original facades such as the Three Old Arches on Bridge Street. www.visitcheshire.com

4 Chester Cathedral

Climbing 216 steps up the 125-ft Central Tower will give you the best view in Chester: one city, two countries and five counties. Originally a Saxon Minster, the cathedral’s award-winning tours take you in the footsteps of the monks who founded a Benedictine Abbey here in 1092, as well as into the Victorian bell tower. The church was rebuilt from 1250 onwards in the Gothic style, making it an interesting architectural patchwork.           www.chestercathedral.com

5 The Eastgate Clock

Britain’s second most photographed clock after Big Ben, the Eastgate Clock is built on a gateway first constructed in the second century, though the existing structure dates back to the Georgian period. The four-faced timepiece itself was added in 1899 to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. www.smithofderby.com

6 Chester Castle

Founded by William the Conqueror and originally built as a motte-and-bailey castle in 1070, Chester Castle was the administrative centre of the earldom. Admire the                     13th-century wall paintings hidden within the Chapel of St Mary de Castro on the first floor of the Agricola Tower. www.english-heritage.org.uk 

7 Grosvenor Park

Dating back to 1867, this Grade II*-listed ornamental park is a haven for residents and visitors alike, with its own miniature railway, café and open-air theatre. 8 Old Dee Bridge

The oldest bridge in the city was first built out of wood in 922. It is rumoured that when King Edward I crossed it on the way to battle with the Welsh he promised that he would sack the city if it wasn’t upgraded to stone before his next visit. Luckily, by 1280 and his return, the current bridge was in its place. Cross over onto the south side and the district of Handbridge to visit the riverside Ship Inn or Cheshire Farm Ice Cream. http://www.historicengland.org.uk

9 Chester Zoo

The second most-visited UK attraction outside London, Chester Zoo is home to 27,000 animals. From the aardvark to the zebra, the colourful array promises a day of discovery. If flora is more your thing, don’t miss the award-winning gardens, including the Orchids National Plant Collection, the Bee Garden and The Botanist’s Lab. www.chesterzoo.org

10 Chester Roman Amphitheatre

Used for entertainment and military training, Chester’s amphitheatre was the largest in Britain. Both amphitheatres built on this site differed from other British designs, highlighting the importance of Roman Chester. Some have been working the awards circuit for a year after snowy, showy premieres at the Sundance Film Festival. Others saw glitzy debuts at the Venice or Telluride film festivals and one hit the scene only weeks ago with his film’s Christmas bow.

Now as their date with Oscar destiny looms Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the nominated stars reflect once more on their work.

Here, THR takes a closer look at each of the actor categories, followed by Oscar night predictions.

Best Actress

Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water

Hawkins faced several challenges on her way to landing a best actress nomination for The Shape of Water, her second following a best supporting actress nomination for 2013’s Blue Jasmine. In Guillermo del Toro’s love story, her character, Elisa, a cleaning woman at a top-secret government facility, is mute (which meant the actress had to learn sign language), while her romantic interest (played by Doug Jones) is a fishlike creature with whom she engages in a lengthy dance scene.

Del Toro wrote the role with Hawkins, 41, in mind, despite the fact that he’d never met her at the time. For her part, Hawkins credits Jones’ own humanity with allowing her to look past his rubber suit and see the human being beneath.

“We had a lot of rehearsal dance-wise,” Hawkins said. “I was there weeks [before]. I would be there months before, if I could. Sometimes you don’t get that luxury of time. Guillermo knew it was essential to have that rehearsal period.… That was just key to getting to know [Doug] and loving him as a human being. Doug Jones is an extraordinary human. And such a gift.” – Aaron Couch

Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird

In the coming-of-age story, the Irish actress plays an eccentric 2000s-era teen growing up in California’s Central Valley, desperate to get out. Ronan, who at just 23 has earned her third Oscar nomination, following nominations for her work in Brooklyn in 2016 and Atonement in 2008. 

“Lady Bird shows the beauty and the frustration of being a teenager, especially around that age when you’re just about to leave home and you just want to get out of the place where you grew up,” Ronan said. “I really identify with that juxtaposition of confidence and insecurity and how you can really believe in yourself, but not quite know exactly what you believe in. I knew that that complexity would be something that would really have to be thought out. The challenge of that really excited me.” – Mia Galuppo

Margot Robbie, I, Tonya

Robbie already was becoming known — for her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street and for playing the demented villain Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad — but the Australian actress, 27, proved her range by portraying infamous figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. 

Robbie earned her first Oscar nomination for playing the ice champ from ages 15 through 40 in the dark comedy, which attempts to explain how an athlete with such raw talent could land at the center of the sport’s biggest scandal. 

“When I picked up the script, I didn’t really see any similarities, and that’s what excited me about the character,” Robbie says about whether she had anything in common with Harding. “The character seemed so foreign to me, and it’s always something I find with the characters that I really love is that to begin with I can’t see any level that we relate on and then, as I explore the character, I suddenly find that we relate in so many ways. That just kind of comes out when putting yourself in the mind-set of someone else. I think if anyone does that, they’ll find empathy there and find a way to connect and find small or big things to relate to their character.” – Rebecca Ford

Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

In Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy, McDormand, 60, plays a mother out for justice for her murdered daughter. The role, which earned her a fifth Oscar nomination (she won in 1997 for Fargo), sees her character, Mildred, go up against the local police chief (Woody Harrelson) and a racist cop (Sam Rockwell) in several spectacular battles of wits and insults. Harrelson spoke about his infamously press-averse sparring partner and how they created one of the most memorable scenes in the film.

“I know Frances pretty well,” says Harrelson. “We’ve been friends for quite a while, and we also worked on [2005’s] North Country together. As a person, she’s incredible, very kind of almost matriarchal — she mothers people, she looks after people. But to work with her is another thing entirely. To actually get into an involved scene is very exciting because I’m such a fan of her as an actor.” – Seth Abramovitch

Meryl Streep, The Post

Streep holds the record for acting Oscar nominations, with her work in Steven Spielberg’s The Post — playing Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham — marking her 21st nomination. 

 “She’s not only the greatest actress — the greatest actor, I should say — of our times, she’s also probably one of the greatest dramaturges of our time,” co-screenwriter Josh Singer said. “She’s like a heat-seeking missile with scenes. Sometimes it’s with lines and sometimes it’s performance, because Meryl doesn’t give you the obvious reading of any line, she doesn’t even give you the second most obvious reading of any line. She tends to give you the 15th most obvious read of any line. And so there were any number of times, it was like, does her performance here fit the arc? And then the first time I saw the cut, I started screaming at the screen because all those moments that I had questioned during the shooting turned out to be brilliant. We build an arc that’s a rough sketch in pencil, and when she’s through with it, it is a beautiful oil painting, a gorgeous work of art.” – Rebecca Ford

Who Should Win: Saoirse Ronan

Margot Robbie and Meryl Streep were both very good but not on the level of Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand and Saoirse Ronan, all exceptional in very fine films which are unthinkable without them. Arguably, Hawkins plays the most unusual character, while McDormand makes the strongest moment-to-moment impression. But cumulatively, with this performance coming on the heels of her very different coming-of-age turn in Brooklyn, I can only once again champion the ever-revelatory Ronan (if both she and Timothee Chalamet were to win, their combined ages would be less than those of most of the other nominees). – THR Chief Film Critic Todd McCarthy

Who Will Win: Frances McDormand

McDormand won this award 21 years ago for Fargo, and she’s about to join an elite group of 13 who have won it more than once. Sally Hawkins, Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep also anchor best pic nominees, and Margot Robbie has the more Oscar-friendly narrative (beautiful movie star morphs into less beautiful real person, and produced her own pic). But none of the others have been able to accrue any momentum because McDormand — for a John Wayne-esque turn that captures the anger felt by many of us right now — has run the table on them at other awards shows. – THR Awards Analyst Scott Feinberg

Best Actor

Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name

Chalamet’s awards season marathon began more than a year ago at Sundance, where Call Me by Your Name, Luca Guadagnino’s Italy-set romantic drama in which Chalamet stars as an erudite teen experiencing his first love, premiered. The actor, 22, received his first nomination for his work opposite Armie Hammer.

“Getting to meet Jennifer Lawrence and hearing her say she was moved by the film is on one side of the crazy-gratifying experience of this movie,” Chalamet said. “On the other side would be my sister saying that she saw so much of [our upbringing in] France represented on the screen and communicated within the lines of this story; it felt very true to us. There have been a lot of reactions that have been really heartwarming, from people I don’t know, and also from friends and family who can appreciate the film for what it is but also can see me underneath peeking through.” – Mia Galuppo

Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour

More than 30 years after he broke out playing the emaciated punk rocker Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy, Oldman, 59, has ventured to the other side of both the waistline and the British class spectrum for Darkest Hour. It took a sizable effort to persuade the actor that he could become Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who led the U.K. through World War II, but the allied forces of producer Eric Fellner, Anthony McCarten’s script, Joe Wright in the director’s chair, makeup artist extraordinaire Kazuhiro Tsuji, and a 14-pound fat suit and silicon face mask did the job.

“God bless Eric Fellner, who I had started my career with,” Oldman said. “I’d done other things before Sid & Nancy, but you could say it was that movie where they say you ‘arrived on the scene.’ And he thought of me for it. And it was five weeks of Churchill’s life, it’s not really a biopic. It wasn’t a huge, great big epic transformation in that sense. Then I went in and started to read around that period and learned things from the script I didn’t know. I just thought, ‘Can that be right? Were we that perilously close?’ And so it just grabbed me.” – Alex Ritman

Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out

From British TV to a small role in 2015’s Sicario to the lead in record-smashing cultural phenomenon Get Out, Kaluuya’s star trajectory has reached a new peak with his first Oscar nomination, not to mention a role in the movie of the moment, Black Panther. 

“I just knew that I’d never seen something like it before,” Kaluuya, 28, said of Get Out. “I mean, the image of a young black man strangling a young white woman — it could go either way! So I just kind of kept going. I didn’t know what was going to happen, because there’s never been anything like this. And that’s the same with Black Panther, because there’s been nothing like it.” – Alex Ritman

Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Washington, 63, earned his eighth acting nomination (and ninth overall) for playing the eccentric titular defense attorney at the center of Dan Gilroy’s courtroom drama, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

“For me, it’s all about the work — it’s all about growing and trying to learn and get better as an actor,” Washington said. “I really got stretched doing Roman J. Israel. I started doing a lot of research about the spectrum and Asperger’s. I felt like there was evidence in the script that made me feel that this man was on the spectrum. Dan and I talked about it and just did a lot of research in what that entails.” – Rebecca Ford

Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread

Day-Lewis is known for his obsessive work as an actor, involving himself with every aspect of production and staying in character for the length of every shoot. In what the 60-year-old has said will be his last role, he channeled that intensity into Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, starring as Reynolds Woodcock, a passionate designer whose work comes before any of the women in his life, including muse Alma (Vicky Krieps) and sister Cyril (Lesley Manville). Manville, who scored a supporting actress nomination for her role, recalls their collaboration.

“We grew up in London in the ’80s and the early part of the ’90s, so we had a big crossover of friends, but we never actually met,” she says. “I was asked to do Phantom Thread seven months before shooting began, so we got to know each other during that time. Our relationship was instantly easy, which boded very well to be Reynolds and Cyril, who have been lifelong companions and are very comfortable with each other, comfortable in silence with each other. We really get on, and we share an enormous sense of humor. We ended up being very good siblings.” – Seth Abramovitch

Who Should Win: Timothee Chalamet

Once Oscar night is over, is anyone even going to remember that Denzel Washington was in a film called Roman J. Israel, Esq.? Daniel Kaluuya’s presence is also something of a surprise, while Gary Oldman, who seems to be the odds-on favorite to win, delivers a better-than-expected impersonation of Winston Churchill while still seeming not to be genuinely suited for the role. As the Academy has demonstrated three times, it’s hard to deny Daniel Day-Lewis. But I would vote for Call Me by Your Name’s startlingly fine leading man, newcomer Timothee Chalamet. – THR Chief Film Critic Todd McCarthy

Who Will Win: Gary Oldman

Forget about Roman J. Israel, Esq.’s Denzel Washington — the nom’s the win for him. Don’t totally write off Daniel Day-Lewis for his last rodeo (in Phantom Thread) or Daniel Kaluuya or Timothee Chalamet for their first, as each anchors a best picture nominee. But so does Oldman, who, unlike the others, has both paid his dues and never won. His transformation into Churchill — already recognized with every major precursor award — is just the sort of thing Academy members eat up. – THR Awards Analyst Scott Feinberg

To honor Dr. King’s legacy is to support the Florida prison strike: "On Monday, January 15, the holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, Florida’s incarcerated population will be participating in a large scale strike. In order to call attention to the practice of systemic slavery that allows for the exploitation and inhumane treatment of prisoners, participants in this act of civil disobedience will institute a work stoppage. Organizers of the peaceful protest have dubbed the effort “Operation PUSH” and have penned a manifesto outlining the changes they are demanding."

Martin Luther King Jr. Spent the Last Year of His Life Detested by the Liberal Establishment: "In 1966, 63 percent of Americans held a negative view of the civil rights leader, while just 32 percent held a positive one. This was a marked reversal from five years earlier, when 41 percent of Americans gave King a positive rating and 37 percent a negative one. King’s slide in popularity coincided with his activism taking a turn from what Americans largely know him for — his campaign for civil rights in the American South — to a much more radical one aimed at the war in Vietnam and poverty."

Race

Writing for Black Women: Ijeoma Oluo Is Still Speaking Truth to Power: "No matter what, when you’re made aware of a privilege that comes at the expense of others or that you may have been actively harming someone through actions and words, it’s very easy to feel really defensive. We want to think of ourselves as good people who don’t harm [others]. It’s this weird, aggressive output of being people who don’t want to hurt people. If you’re someone who doesn’t care, you won’t care about harm, so it’s weird that we because we care so much about people, we often end up doing more harm when we’re confronted with our wrongdoing."

Feds planning massive Northern California immigration sweep to strike against sanctuary laws: “U.S. immigration officials have begun preparing for a major sweep in San Francisco and other Northern California cities in which federal officers would look to arrest more than 1,500 undocumented people while sending a message that immigration policy will be enforced in the sanctuary state, according to a source familiar with the operation.”

The Coping Economy: "Time and again we read that mindful companies aren’t perfect, but that they’re better for their employees and for the world than most. General Mills still sells 'junk food to kids and empty calories to adults,' David Gelles has written, but the people are friendly. Ford vehicles still burn fossil fuels, but the firm avoided being hated like the tobacco industry. Between 'invading people’s privacy at one turn' and 'snuffing out competitors at the next,' Google has hardly lived up to its own motto 'don’t be evil.' But its embrace of mindful culture, Gelles concludes, shows it hasn’t 'lost touch with its idealism.' Companies, too, need to tell themselves uplifting stories about the way of life they create. Activism

Grounding the currents of Indigenous resistance: Those joining the centuries-old Indigenous resistance in the Americas should discard Eurocentric narratives, epistemic violence and salvation narratives. "The interrelationships between our ethics, cosmologies, lifeways and the waters, lands and life-forms that sustain us are as complex and critical to our survival as those between the rivers, lakes and wetlands within the watershed where we reside. In our current political landscape, however, we must also navigate dangerously confining constructs introduced by European colonizers that function as ideological canals, locks and dams."

Walking the Floor of the Great Minnesota Activist Factory: "We switched the model from being a service model—‘we’ll solve the problem for you’—to deep leadership development. We’re gonna partner with you, we’ll provide you with the tools, but you’ve got to be the leader fighting for the change […] A lot of things that call themselves ‘worker centers’ are social services. That’s not a criticism, it’s just a difference. The type of organization we are, we believe that systemic change won’t happen unless it comes from the community. From the people who are directly impacted."

Controversial Sam Durant Sculpture to Be Ceremonially Burned—and the 9 Other Biggest News Stories This Week

01  A Sam Durant sculpture at Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center that drew protests from the Native American community will be removed and then ceremonially burned.

A two-story structural work by Durant, Scaffold (2012) was a recent addition to the Walker’s renovated sculpture garden and was intended to critically evoke imagery of the gallows used in the 1862 hanging of 38 Dakota in Mankato, Minnesota. However, Native American groups asserted that the work insensitively portrayed a history of violence and genocide. Following two days of protest, the Walker’s executive director Olga Viso announced that she and Durant had agreed upon the work’s removal. In a prior statement, Viso expressed regret that the museum excluded Native American groups in the decision to host the work. “It’s a small victory,” said Dakota artist Graci Horne, who broke news of the removal to a crowd of roughly 100 protesters. “It happened so fast. We were prepared to be in a marathon with this.” As part of a removal process determined jointly by Dakota elders, Walker staff, and Durant, the work will be disassembled beginning Friday and ceremonially burned in a Dakota-led ceremony. Due to the events, the gardens’ re-opening has been pushed back to June 10th.

02  On Wednesday, a noose was left in the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Segregation Gallery.

This is the second noose left on Smithsonian grounds this week, after police discovered another on Saturday among the grounds of the Hirshhorn Museum. The incident is under investigation by U.S. Park Police. After finding the noose, the NMAAHC closed part of its galleries as the Smithsonian Office of Protection Services joined police in an investigation. “The noose has long represented a deplorable act of cowardice and depravity—a symbol of extreme violence for African Americans,” said the museum’s founding director Lonnie Bunch III in a statement. “This was a horrible act, but a stark reminder of why our work is so important.”

03  A work of art looted by Nazis will be auctioned in July, with the proceeds to be divided between the trust of the previous owner and the heirs of the Jewish couple who originally held the piece.

La Punta Della Dogana e San Giorgio Maggiore by Michele Marieschi was looted by Nazis during World War II after the Graf family fled Austria during the late 1930s, leaving the painting and other possessions behind. A multi-decade search eventually surfaced the work, which was being held by an unidentified collector, though the discovery did not result in a restitution. While a judge revealed the name of the collector to the Graf heirs, the identity otherwise remains secret, and the collector refused to part with the piece up until her or his death in 2013. Two years later, the collector’s trust reached out to a mediator who began negotiations with the heirs. The current settlement, which the son-in-law of the original Jewish owners called “bittersweet,” is a compromise that brings the dispute to an end without restituting the piece to the heirs. The agreement sees the painting head to auction at Sotheby’s in July, where it is expected to bring between $650,000 and $905,000. The eventual sum will be split between the trust and the heirs, though the exact details of the settlement remain confidential.

04  On Tuesday, Art Basel sued the German sportswear manufacturer Adidas for trademark infringement and a host of related allegations in a Florida federal court.

Art Basel and its Swiss parent company, MCH Group, assert that Adidas did not receive permission to emblazon “Art Basel” on roughly 1,000 limited-edition sneakers distributed during the fair’s 15th edition in Miami Beach last November. The art fair—which holds a registered trademark on its name—is seeking treble damages, the destruction of the “offending” shoes and connected material, and other relief. Calling its brand one of the fair’s most “valuable and important corporate assets,” the complaint notes that Art Basel has licensed its “mark” to several companies—from UBS to BMW, but not Adidas. The complaint charges that by placing “Art Basel” on its shoes without such an agreement, Adidas infringed on a “registered and incontestable” trademark, while implying a nonexistent affiliation between the manufacturer and the art fair brand in consumers’ minds.

05  A prominent Geneva-based antiquity-dealing family is under investigation for potentially handling ISIS-looted objects.

Brothers Ali and Hicham Aboutaam, who together run Phoenix Ancient Art, are currently the subject of three separate probes by Swiss, Belgian, and French authorities. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is also looking into the family’s affairs, as part of a broader examination of U.S.-based antiquities dealers and their connections with trafficked material. In March, a driver working for Ali was arrested by Swiss law enforcement on suspicion of avoiding value-added taxes; around the same time, Ali’s wife was detained for two weeks when she failed to produce proper documentation for several artifacts. However, no charges have been leveled against the brothers at this time. A lawyer representing the dealership said it “has never knowingly purchased or sold any looted items, let alone items looted by ISIS.” The the Aboutaams have run afoul of the law in the past. In 2004, Hicham pled guilty to falsifying a customs declaration and was fined in New York court.

06  MoMA revealed the final design for its ongoing $400 million expansion on Thursday.

The first phase of the project—a reconfiguration of the museum’s east section, begun in February 2016—was also completed this week, increasing MoMA’s public space by 25 percent. The institution’s upcoming Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition will open this month in a suite of these renovated galleries. The second half of the expansion will see an overhauled main lobby and additional, flexible galleries. But change is not limited to the physical space—MoMA will now organize many of its galleries according to time period or theme rather than discipline. “It’s a rethinking of how we were originally conceived,” museum director Glenn D. Lowry told the New York Times. “We had created a narrative for ourselves that didn’t allow for a more expansive reading of our own collection, to include generously artists from very different backgrounds.” This mission will be put to the test in 2019, when the museum will only display works from its collection to mark the opening of the expanded building. MoMA said it has already raised the money necessary for construction, aided by a $100 million donation from entertainment mogul David Geffen.

07  New York City’s Public Artist in Residence Tania Bruguera will work with a team of women to deliver important information on social services by bike to immigrant communities.

New York City Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl announced the project, CycleNews, on Tuesday at a City Hall rally in solidarity with immigrants, alongside Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Nisha Agarwal and Bruguera. CycleNews will launch with a pilot program in Corona, Queens, where roughly 15 women will travel by bike and provide immigrant populations with information on the “critical services MOIA provides: IDNYC, ActionNYC legal services, English conversation classes, and know your rights materials,” the press release said. The women are part of Mujeres en Movimiento, a group of Spanish-speaking mothers and community advocates. “After spending time getting to know the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, I wanted to build on MOIA’s community outreach strategies and initiatives, furthering their relationship with the communities they serve,” Bruguera said.

08  A Greek LGBTQI and refugee rights group has stolen an artwork that is part of Documenta 14.

The theft is an act of protest against the expenditure on the high-profile art event as refugees live in dire conditions across Europe, and, according to statement put out by the group, condemns the “fetishization” of refugees. The artwork, Replica of Oath Stone, by Spanish artist Roger Bernat in collaboration with Roberto Fratini, was “a facsimile of a limestone table where oaths were sealed” and made of “porexpan, fiberglass, and acrylic paint,” according to Artforum. Bernat’s project, “The Place of the Thing,” saw the sculpture carried through Athens in a fake funeral procession, after which it would be shipped to Kassel for a burial. Artforum reported the LGBTQI group had agreed to be one of the groups in the performance, and had accepted a €500 payment for its participation. But in its statement, it mocked the “grand donation” of €500, and said the disappearance of the rock symbolized the disappearance of the many refugees who had died “seeking better lives in Europe.”

09  El Museo del Barrio has fired one of its senior executives as internal issues continue to mount.

In recent years, the New York museum has faced numerous financial and institutional challenges, including seeing three different directors in just seven years. Now added to that list is the firing of deputy director of institutional advancement Berta Colón, who was only named to the position in August. The museum cited “performance reasons” for her May 19th dismissal. However, in a letter to the museum’s board of trustees, Colón claims that the revenue goals provided to her were “not based on solid expectations” and that her performance had never been officially evaluated. In the same letter, Colón accused interim executive director Carlos Gálvez of employee intimidation, suggesting he unduly influenced museum workers toward his preferred candidate for the executive director position. Patrick Charpenel, the latest appointment as executive director, comes to El Museo del Barrio from a curatorial position with Museo Jumex in Mexico City. Officially named as director on May 1st, Charpenel has seen his appointment delayed as he awaits the necessary paperwork for U.S. work clearance.

Only two days after protests from the hardline conservative Islamic group Hefazat-e-Islam—which claims Islam prohibits artistic representations of living things—pressured authorities into removing the statue, the decision was reversed. The work was returned but relocated 300 yards away, near a less prominent annex to the country’s Supreme Court building. Though Bangladesh is a secular country, strict fundamentalism spurred by groups such as Hefazat has exerted increasing influence in the nation’s rural areas. This ideological conflict came to a head Friday when left-wing student groups countered conservative religious groups at rallies in the capital of Dhaka. Sunday’s compromise appears to have left no party satisfied, the Times reports: Sculptor Mrinal Haque said his statue has been “sent to isolation” while Hefazat’s leader, Shah Ahmad Shafi, is unhappy with its continued existence.

We tried to take some risks and really just strive to be us.”

The metalcore-infused-alternative-rock outfit introduced a singular identity on the 2018 EP, 'Barely Alive'. The project quietly put up nearly 2 million total streams in less than a year as they attracted early praise from the likes of Alternative Press who claimed, “it’s the lyricism that channels the most emotion.” In between touring with the likes of WAGE WAR, PALISADES AND KUBLAI KHAN, they signed to SharpTone Records and began work on what would become 'The Truth In Your Eyes'. SAVAGE HANDS built a full studio at Michael’s place and recorded these eleven tracks alongside producer Andrew Baylis [MY ENEMIES & I, SYLAR]. Deconstructing Hierarchies: On the Paradox of Contrived Leadership and Arbitrary Positions of Power: "Bosses don't grow on trees. They don't magically appear at your job. They aren't born into their roles. They are created. They are manufactured to fulfill arbitrary positions of power within organizational hierarchies. They possess no natural or learned talents, and they are not tried and tested through any type of meritocratic system. Indigenous-Led Pipeline Resistance Camps Spread Across the USA: "Direct opposition to fossil fuel extraction projects continues to spread throughout the USA. Resistance camps mirroring the #NoDAPL encampments opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) have sprung up to resist the Sabal Trail, Trans-Pecos, Comanche, AIM, and Pilgrim Pipelines. Water protectors are concerned about the threats to the environment posed by the fracking process and the boring that occurs when pipelines are constructed underneath waterways."

The Rights of Nature: Indigenous Philosophies Reframing Law: "Indigenous battles to defend nature have taken to the streets, leading to powerful mobilizations like the gathering at Standing Rock. They have also taken to the courts, through the development of innovative legal ways of protecting nature. In Ecuador, Bolivia and New Zealand, indigenous activism has helped spur the creation of a novel legal phenomenon—the idea that nature itself can have rights. […] The notion that nature has rights is a huge conceptual advance in protecting the Earth. Prior to this framework, an environmental lawsuit could only be filed if a personal human injury was proven in connection to the environment. This can be quite difficult. Under Ecuadorian law, people can now sue on the ecosystem's behalf, without it being connected to a direct human injury."
