⇢ 🎃 STATUS ﹕ closed. ⇢ 🎃 TAGGING ﹕jasper finch ( @silkeared ) ⇢ 🎃 LOCATION ﹕ portum's annual halloween fair.
the sounds of the halloween fair faded as nyra wandered past the booths and lights, drawn by the quiet of the nearby forest. the fair was fun ( divya was making sure of that ), but nyra found herself a little overstimulated and in need of a few minutes away from the noise. she found herself near the edge of the woods where strings of orange lights were casting a warm glow onto the trees. she took in a deep breath and that’s when she spotted them – a young guy sitting against a fallen log seemingly lost in thought. “hey,” she called out gently, hesitantly stepping closer. he was dressed like a vampire but her nose was telling her that they were like her. werewolf. “sorry, i didn’t mean to sneak up on you.” nyra nodded her head back towards the fairgrounds. “bit loud over there, isn’t it?”

while jasper spoke softly, the silence of the forest helped carry their voice and helped nyra focus in on his words. her gaze followed the almost anxious motion of jasper’s hand under his cape, but didn’t linger on it, not wanting them to feel self-conscious. the scars left behind by men like that went beyond the physical. “i just want you to know that you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for,” she said gently. “what your father did…what he made you endure – you found a way out. that takes so much more courage than people realize.” by some miracle, nyra’s voice managed to remain steady, but there was an understanding laced in her tone that only someone who lived through her own share of scars could offer. the familiar name of maren had nyra perking up. “maren?” she echoed. “maren’s your sister?” the cute, new girl at the diner that nyra was well on her way to making friends with. nyra cleared her throat and nodded, “i work at the diner with her. small world!” accidentally learning a little more about her coworker like this made her heart squeeze, not with pity but understanding. “as for being ‘stuck like this,’ maybe it’s not about being stuck. maybe it’s figuring out what this part of you can mean now, on your terms.” her eyes scanned around them, tuning back in to the muffled sounds of the fair behind them. “i think you’re right. being here, it’s like being able to breathe again…” focusing back on jasper, nyra offered them a small smile. “and i’d really like to be your friend. you’ve got more kindness in you than most people i’ve met, jasper. that’s a golden quality in my book.”
jasper was like a flower opening up to the spring sunlight. at first, he had been closed and nervous. slowly, their body turned towards nyra, and their deep brown eyes focused on the way she held all the anger the young wolf had never been able to articulate. he had been born as the runt of the litter, a disappointment … but his break in the chain had been the reason him and his sisters had found their way out. what they had been told for so many years was cowardice was actually bravery behind a shroud. their father had always intended for jasper to be a weapon ; in some ways, he had been, and he had torn the patriarch’s dream apart from the inside out. when he spoke again, his voice was even smaller. “i know,” jasper squeaked, resting their chin between their knees, one hand moving beneath the cheap nylon cape to feel the scar his father had left him with. it was jagged and ugly, pink and agitated, having stretched over the years from growth. it had been smaller back then, but it now extended from beneath their armpit around their bicep. “maren liked it at the beginning, i think. but now we’re … now we’re stuck like this. maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if we had been together.” but the forced separation, the lack of a pack or any sort of support, had left jasper confused, scared, hiding from the change whenever the moon was high. “you’ll like it here,” he offered a small smile, “it’s nice. quiet. the people here are lovely, and they’ll keep trouble from finding you. it’ll start feeling okay soon. at least you have me now. we can be friends.”

while he didn’t speak the words outright, the insinuation that their father had forced the change onto his children made bile rise in nyra’s throat. her chest squeezed painfully at the thought; of young children being bitten against their will, of their choice being taken away. “i’m so sorry, jasper,” nyra’s voice was quiet but her tone was filled with a sense of pain and injustice on their behalf. “no one–no one– should ever take away your choice like that. the wolf is not supposed to be some weapon, or a leash, or tool for someone else’s ambition.” her fists clenched at her sides, the thought of her own struggles flashing through her mind before she pushed it out. “what your father did wasn’t about being a wolf. it was about control. that’s not what this is supposed to be.” immediately, nyra felt her protective instincts go into overdrive. she was going to look out for this little lost wolf, and make sure they never experience that kind of violation again. “safe,” nyra echoed the words and nodded. portum was safe. “i’ve only been here a few months. it was such a relief when i found my way here…like i could finally breathe again.”
jasper sometimes worried whether they were too quiet, too withdrawn. maybe that was why it seemed so difficult to make friends, as though he was climbing a vertical mountain without support. the wolf took a long, inward breath, mustering enough strength for a smile. “i suppose the forest is different for everyone,” they replied diplomatically, “me and my sisters didn’t ask for any of this. our father — our father wanted a pack, and i suppose he got what he wanted. we always preferred curling up in front of a fire.” talk of childhood came with a metallic bitterness in jasper’s mouth. if it wasn’t so unkind, he would have said he almost felt jealous. “nyra.” he felt the weight of her name on his tongue, the way the syllables sounded in his soft north-english lilt. every spoken sentence came with a bracing breath, but jasper willed himself to be brave. so far, he hadn’t come across many other wolves without a shared surname. “i’ve been in portum … gosh … a few years now. it’s gone so quickly. it’s nice — safe.” and by their wide eyes, the way their fingers twisted together anxiously, he was sure nyra could see exactly why they needed safety.

nyra nodded her head in quiet understanding, her eyes softening as she listened closely to the silence between his words. he hadn’t said much, but his body language was speaking volumes to her. “yeah, that’s why i like taking a break here. the smells and sounds aren’t so overwhelming.” as a born wolf, nyra had spent years of her life preparing for the change – understanding the pain that would come with it, but also the utter freedom as well. there was nothing quite like running wild through the forest. it was hard for her to grasp that the experience was not the same for everyone. her brows furrowed together, unsure for a moment on how to respond. nyra didn’t want to push too much since jasper already seemed so skittish. “i’m…sorry to hear that. it’s always been such a source of peace for me,” she admitted. “it’s nice to meet you, though, jasper. have you been in portum long?”
jasper finch had learned the hard way that autism and being a werewolf didn’t quite mix. he was already on edge when it came to unfamiliar sounds, bright lights, unpleasant smells — and after a change it was as though all his sensory organs were set alight. their body was forced into overdrive, and the world almost started to hurt. the milky glow of the moon cast down on their exposed skin and jasper was sure he could feel it burning. “it’s just a bit too much,” a sigh released and they played with the black hem of their cape, something cheap and mass-produced from the first costume store him and koda had come across. the plastic teeth were gaudy and too big and a little ridiculous, but the ears koda had bought were borderline offensive. and, when it came to the woodland, jasper wasn’t sure whether they were comforted or terrified. they had lost count of the times they had woken up, cold and alone and naked with the taste of iron in their mouth, forced to make it home with little more than a few torn up rags. werewolves seemed to be split down the middle. there were wolves like him — terrified, resentful, searching for a cure for what they were — and the ones like his father — cold and callous killers that revelled in their monthly change, that craved to feel the flesh curl away from their bones. jasper tilted his head and voiced a soft hum. “the forest hasn’t always been kind to me,” then quietly, “i’m jasper. it’s nice to meet you.”

nyra stopped a few feet away from the other wolf, observing them quietly. she could see the moment the other recognized her for what she was. she smiled gently and nodded in understanding at their statement. “oh, i totally get it,” nyra chuckled, tapping her index finger against her nose. “i’ve got an extra sensitive nose so i needed a break myself.” she leaned back against a nearby tree, settling in for small talk while ensuring she didn’t encroach on the other’s personal space. “my name’s nyra, by the way,” she said, giving him a faint smile hoping her presence wouldn’t feel like another crowd. her eyes scanned the tree line instinctually, a result of years spent always on the lookout for trouble. when she spoke again, she kept her voice soft, matching their energy. “sometimes it’s like the forest knows how to calm us down better than we do.” forests had always been where she felt the most at peace, the most herself. the shift of dirt, twigs and leaves beneath her paws made her feel connected the pulse of it all.
it was a strange sensation, sitting so close to the forest without the need to desperately run into the underbrush. there were two weeks until the next full moon, and jasper was still reeling from the last — a super moon, huge and orange and burning in the sky, tearing his skin apart and re - forming his bones like some sort of back-alley surgery. the memory ran a chill through their body as they sat, huddled, watching the tree line, their legs pulled up onto the stump and their knees acting as a plinth for their chin. it was all a bit too much, the loud noises and unfamiliar smells and the very real threat of being bumped into by somebody in a 6 - foot dinosaur costume. “oh. hello.” jasper perked up and turned his head to the side. the air felt thicker, familiar. it was one thing about wolves ; they always knew where to find one another. “that’s okay. you didn’t sneak up on me. i’m just … taking a bit of time out.” he unfurled his legs and drummed both hands against his dark trousers. “it’s a little much. i wasn’t sure anyone else thought so.”
