the glittering, cacophonous new year's eve party felt like a physical weight pressing down on fahriye. the forced laughter, the clinking of champagne flutes, the overly enthusiastic countdown – it all grated on her nerves. that's why, her patience finally snapping, she'd abandoned the crowded ballroom for the cool, crisp night air. her black stilettos, instruments of sophisticated torture, lay abandoned on the damp grass near the wrought iron fence, their precarious elegance a stark contrast to her current state. her bare feet, usually kept pristine, now splayed delicately against the cold, unforgiving metal bars as she attempted, once again, to hoist herself over. the fence, a dark silhouette against the festive lights, felt like a personal antagonist.

fahriye wasn't typically one for impulsive acts of rebellion. she was a creature of careful planning, a strategist who meticulously considered every angle before committing to a course of action. but tonight, meticulous strategy had crumbled under the weight of overwhelming weariness, replaced by a urge to simply be… elsewhere. home, mostly. but, anywhere would do at this point. the metal groaned under her weight as she tried again for the third time, a frustrated grunt escaping her lips as her grip slipped. this time, a string of curses, sharp and guttural, erupted from her turkish-tongue, the words laced potent irritation.

a polite clearing of a throat pierced the silence, pulling her out of her frustrated internal monologue. startled, she twisted her head, her dark hair swirling around her shoulders, to find colt standing a few feet away. with a small, exasperated huff, she turned fully to face him, brushing down the front of her sleek black dress, the fabric rustling softly against her skin. her hands, which moments before were gripping metallic bars, now rested elegantly in front of her, fingers intertwined with poised control. her gaze, which held a hint of annoyance, settled on colt, conveying a silent message: he was an obstacle, an unwelcome interruption in her desperate mission. she regarded him for a long moment, allowing a heavy silence to settle between them, the only sound the faint thump of the bass from the nearby party. finally, with a clarity that belied her earlier frustrations, she spoke, a low question that was more of an accusation: ❛ how long have you been standing there? ❜

(December 2020 Exhibition Special Interview: Secret Story of the Birth of an Original Worldview)

While respecting Emma and not wanting to take away the qualities that make her her, he also stresses to her to be more pragmatic and realistic, which is where Norman comes in because they balance each other out impeccably well.

Ray is the only one Norman shows his more competitive and prideful side to at Grace Field, knows there's an underlying cunning and ruthlessness to the boy that he's banking on Norman channeling and drawing strength from as soon as he figures out he's the traitor that will push Norman to toss him aside, but once they're out in the wilderness he's hoping for Emma to keep him grounded just as much he'll keep her grounded.

The little bow of reflection and smile Ray makes as he briefly soaks in the last morning Emma and Norman will be able to carry out their routine as usual knowing the horror they'll endure before night's end.

He knows they'd both prefer the harsh truth over a pretty lie, would hate to think about other siblings suffering the same fate as Conny, Hao, Sadie, Susan, and so many more before them if there was even the slightest chance of being able to do something about it. It's part of what he loves about them; where he had the tendency to give up after years of learned helplessness and self-loathing, they would resolutely say "no" and escape the system they had been born into.

He loves them so much he can't help but let some of his fondness show on his face as he savors Emma's reaction to seeing him and Norman, because if that isn't so incredibly her, to love so effortlessly and uninhibited, to live so unabashedly authentic.

It's part of what got him through a life he cursed and part of why he has faith if anyone will be able to do this, it'll be them.
