KLAUS WAS VEXED — which was, perhaps, one of the worst states he might find himself in. While hardly the pinnacle of rage, such a slow simmering of irritability was predisposed to mounting and, the nearer the appointed night of the ritual drew, the stronger it grew. The fact that multiple sources existed for his crossness did little to even out the sensation; instead, he was confronted by it at every turn.
Elijah was one aggravator of Klaus’ temper, a reality which was far from unusual. When he and his brother operated in tandem, they were ‘ thick as thieves, ’ and when they did not? They were the thorn in each other’s side. The mere memory of Elijah inquiring if he didn’t wish to postpone the ritual so they might attempt to discern another method of breaking his curse was enough to exasperate him. After enduring lifetimes of suffering this malediction, how could either of them truly believe a means of avoidance subsisted? If one did, Klaus would have located it long ago, of that he harbored no doubt.
The catalyst for Elijah’s prodding served as another source of his perturbation: Katerina Petrova. Her existence should garner him nothing but satisfaction, and for a time, it had. With the secret supplication of Klaus’ blood, she had lived these past few months the healthiest she might have ever hoped to be, exploring a world she’d previously been too bedridden to enjoy. While the reality remained that Katerina must perish in order for the ritual to reach completion, she was human. As was their lot, all humans were fated to die someday; perhaps her end would arrive more swiftly than was natural, yet in the grand scheme of the universe, were a few more simple decades anything to quibble over? In addition to the robustness he had granted her that she would’ve never possessed otherwise, she would avoid the eventual loss of her father, old age, and every other tragedy which would inevitably befall her. It was better this way.
So, why was he distressed by the impending loss of her life? Why did Elijah need to notice the conflict of it brewing inside of him? And why did Klaus experience a damned ache within his chest, one that had begun with a pinprick only to grow, whenever she looked at him with that warm gaze that suggested she thought something of him when he was nothing less than a monster? Whatever vindication he repeated in his mind akin to a mantra, the reality he buried deep down inside was that he was Katerina’s nightmare, her grim reaper.
Perhaps the one he was most vexed with himself, although that wasn’t novel. Klaus hated that he succumbed to the weakness of caring, just as he simultaneously hated that he was beastly enough to harm her at all. He was doomed to loath who he was to his very core regardless of which direction he chose, so what did any of it even matter aside from taking what he wanted?
As he approached her chambers, he decided to temper his own moodiness ( at least, as best he possibly could ). Klaus suspected that Katerina herself might be irked with him in turn, after he had failed to return the day prior so they could pass the afternoon together, instead staying outside the castle grounds until the latest of evening hours. It was a decision that had, primarily, not been deliberate — or maybe that was a lie he spun for his own benefit to avoid acknowledging that a resolution he’d settled on was influenced by anyone aside from himself.
Once outside her door, he rapped firmly against the wood. In the event that she may conclude not to answer, Klaus spoke, raising his voice slightly to ensure he would be heard. “I’ve come to make amends.” God knew he couldn’t rely on Elijah to conjure some story so that he might appear more sympathetic; thus, he would need to accomplish this the more direct way. Glancing to the parcel under his arm, he continued, “I have a package with me which I believe may sway you to my favor, if you’ll allow me the opportunity to present it to you.”
