IT’S JUSTINE’S FIRST TIME INDULGING IN BODILY PLEASURES, and as she settles down in front of the mirror just as Audrey requested, she finds herself wondering why an activity so SINFUL in religion is also so EXCITING. Her heart is beating against her chest, thrumming with the immense ANTICIPATION of whatever is to come.

“You wanted me in front of the mirror, right?” She asks softly, slightly PROUD of herself for how her voice did not shake with nerves. “Like this?”

JUSTINE COULD NOT HELP but giggle at her companion’s words, covering her mouth with her hand so that some semblance of DECORUM might be maintained.

“I fear that such an endeavor might be a Herculean task for you to undertake, mon ami.” Justine’s response was MILD, yet an undercurrent of AMUSEMENT at Courfeyac’s plight was present in her tone. “You do find immense enjoyment in practicing the art of making conversation, after all. How long do you reckon you’ll be able to remain true to this vow?”

JUSTINE EYED GRANTAIRE SKEPTICALLY, not quite believing his response even whilst her lips curled upward into a small, fond smile. Despite her father’s problematic identity, the revolutionaries had hesitantly welcomed her into their fold once she revealed her status as the author of several anonymous revolutionary writings that had recently appeared in the local press — and now, she found herself genuinely enjoying their friendly company.

     Inspector Javert would be FURIOUS if he discovered the truth of how his daughter spent her evenings (if he learnt that Justine was not actually spending these nights at a friend’s home as she’d originally led him to believe) but perhaps, that was part of the fun of it all. She got to experience her tantalizing first taste of teenage rebellion while advocating for a cause in which she FERVENTLY BELIEVED.

“Somehow I doubt that, but whether you were awake or not — here, I brought you breakfast.” She gestured to the basket hanging from her arm, filled with warm rolls of bread which she’d hastily prepared the moment that her father left home for the day. “Freshly baked bread, prepared right under Inspector Javert’s nose.”

Morgan & Co. Despite Constance's status as a "Robber Baroness", she strove to provide checks and balances regarding corruption amongst society's elite, and published several whistleblower works categorized today as "yellow journalism". She perished in the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

THE INSPECTOR’S GENTLE CHILD HAD been unusually quiet that day, preferring to keep her focus upon her almost frantic knitting rather than make conversation with her friend. Only this endeavor could protect Justine from the TEMPEST inside her mind, which continued to grow with each passing moment. DISCONTENT and ANXIETY had seeped into her bones and poisoned her thoughts, ruining what might have otherwise become a wonderful afternoon spent in the company of Fantine.

        “I’m scared.” Justine finally admitted, after a silence which resembled ETERNITY. “Père and I…” She swallowed thickly, and glanced down at her lap. “We have been at odds lately. Tension has settled over our household, mostly due to the rebellion. . I’ve never been at odds with him quite like this before, and it scares me.”
