his entire life is torn apart when Rotti kills Marni. the immense guilt he felt , thinking it was *his* medicine that killed her , thinking he gave it to her and that it would cure her.

he was blackmailed into becoming a repo man , wanting to protect Shilo from knowing her father was a murderer and that he “killed Marni.” he enforced münchausens by proxy , causing Shilo to exhibit symptoms that weren’t there in the name of keeping her safe from the outside world. safe from him. He keeps her dependant on him so he can make sure she is never exposed to what he does, and so that she has no chance of meeting Rotti.

he viewed himself as a monster. his mind splits himself from the repoman , or as Rotti would call it , “his repo life.” we can see this in *Thankless Job*, when he seems to be enjoying slaughtering this man , but then looks horrified once he realizes what he’s done — it’s comparable to the look we see on Bernardo’s face in West Side Story ( 2021 ) after he stabs Riff — he’s horrified by his actions , and he seems to not be able to control himself when he’s in the Repoman mindset. When he's in this mindset he is so dissociated from his reality, numbing himself to the vile things he's doing.

Summary: Wow, I did not mean for this to get this long but I don't really know how to split it up so bear with me. Aniol and GraveRobber have a chat when they are interrupted by a familiar face. Also this isn't necessarily canon to my ship timeline I just wanted to write Aniol and Shilo interacting. On the shadiest streets in the city, people like the GraveRobber dwelled. Illegal Zydrate dealers and Zydrate addicts, those just trying to get by and those looking to make a quick buck… there was no “middle class,” there hadn’t been one for a long time. There was the bottom of the beer barrel and the corked top of a bottle of champagne. Aniol was about the only person who existed and flowed between that high and low. He whistled a tune that connected him with the GraveRobber as he walked, drawing the eyes of the prostitutes on the corner and their potential customers. It didn’t take long for the pale man with colourful streaks in his greasy hair to materialise out of the darkness, whistling along with Aniol as he took up stride at their side.

“What’s new with you?” He asked as the tune came to an end.

“I was wondering if I could interest you in a job,” Aniol hummed.

“In addition to what I already do?”

“Never mind the Zydrate business, I want to put you in a film.”

GraveRobber slowed to a halt while Aniol managed a few more steps forward before turning to face him.

“I don’t know, pretty bird. Don’t you think that’s a bit risky, putting my mug on the big screen? You’re not trying to put me out of business, are you?”

Aniol stepped toward him, taking his angular face in their hands and examining his features closely. “A little make-up and prosthetics and you’ll be unrecognizable. I promise you, my artists are just as good as surgeons, and of course they’re under a contract that says they can’t say shit about dick unless I say so, so you wouldn’t have to worry about your identity getting out beyond the dressing room.”

The GraveRobber considered this for a moment before the two of them were distracted by the sound of a can bouncing off of the curb. A girl standing anxiously under a streetlight gasped and stepped back, obviously not wanting to be seen.

“What’s a girl like you doing out at this time of night?” Aniol called across the alley.

“Kid? Is that you?” GraveRobber added, curiously familiar. The girl hesitantly skipped across the road to join them.

“I'm sorry, I-I promise I wasn't stalking you, I was following a bug…” She looked around, “I’ve lost it, now…”

“You know this young thing?” Aniol asked, his expression slightly concerned. He lowered his voice, “She's not a customer, is she?”

“No! This is… well, I never did catch your name. But it’s kind of funny… you were chasing a bug the first time we met.”

The girl smiled coyly. “That’s right…” her brow then furrowed. “But you also got me caught.”

“I understand that you aren’t supposed to be out either way, so I’d prefer if you thought of it as me doing you a favour, kid.”

“My name is Shilo.”

Recognition flashed on Aniol’s face, and he could see that it made her nervous. “GraveRobber’s right, you shouldn’t be out.” He crossed his arms. “You’re clearly young and inexperienced, for one. This city’ll eat you alive if you’re not careful.”

She pulled her bag closer to her side, a determined look on her face. “Who’re you to say I’m inexperienced? I’m seventeen, I’m practically an adult.”

“And yet you’re sneaking around like you’re twelve,” GraveRobber quipped, making her face turn pink with embarrassment.

Aniol moved to whisper in his ear, “This is one of my friends’ kids.”

Surprise captured him and he huddled with Aniol in an attempt to talk more privately. “Really?? How do you know?”

“I’ve never seen a picture of her, but how many Shilos do you meet on a given day? She already reminds me of him, too.”

“What are you two murmuring about over there?” Shilo asked. The GraveRobber popped his head up.

“Nothing. Just discussing who should take you home.” He shoved Aniol forward. “How about my friend, here?”

“What? No, I don’t want to go home yet!” She frowned at Aniol. “And don’t I know you from somewhere…?”

It was Aniol’s turn to blush. “I assure you, you don’t,” he answered firmly. Not like my face has been in magazines and on posters and billboards, my trailers on public television screens…

“So you’re saying this complete stranger should take me home?? Doesn’t that seem a little against your ‘protect the child’ M.O.?”

“Yes, well, I trust Aniol very much--”

“Robber.”

“Aniol… oh my God, you’re Aniol West!” Shilo pointed at him while his flush crept into his ears.

“And you are not nearly old enough to be watching my movies.”

“Well I’ve never seen any of them… I just recognized you from one of my magazines. You know Blind Mag?”

Aniol sighed while his friend looked very bemused. “It’s none of your business, kid--”

“Of course he knows Mag,” GraveRobber butt in theatrically, “all good artists know each other.”

This made Shilo’s eyes sparkle. “Can you get me her autograph?”

Aniol frowned. This was far too complicated for his liking, knowing the history interwoven between Nathan, Mag, Marni, and Shilo, though Shilo didn’t know it. He spoke very deliberately, “If you promise me there will be no fuss in going home tonight, I’ll think about it.”

She thought hard about it before nodding in agreement. “Deal. But you have to walk me, and you have to tell me all about being a director.”

GraveRobber snickered at Aniol’s reluctant expression.

“Fine…” He glared at his friend. You ass… and you don’t know the half of it! “GraveRobber, turn around and plug your ears.”

“Why…?”

“Just do it.”

“Fine, fine,” the GraveRobber did as he was told while Aniol stepped closer to Shilo.

“A final condition, your father absolutely cannot see me.”

“Huh??”

“Trust me. I walk you to your house, and then I’m gone. Just be prepared to get inside as quickly as physically possible.”

“Okay…” Shilo studied him for a moment. He wished he knew what she was thinking. He tapped the GraveRobber on the shoulder.

“You can take your hands off your ears, now.”

He turned back to them. “All settled, then?”

“Yes, I’m taking Shilo back home right now. Don’t think you’ve escaped my film proposition, however, I will be finding you again later.”

“You want to put him in a movie??” Shilo asked, giggling.

“What, you don’t think I have the chops?” GraveRobber asked in a jokingly aggressive manner. She continued to laugh, doubling over slightly. It warmed something in his cold, black, Zydrate-slinging heart. Aniol checked his watch.

“C'mon, Shilo. Ciao, Robber.” He pat the GraveRobber's cheek affectionately. He took his hand and kissed their fingers.

“Until I hear your siren’s song once more, Aniol.”

Aniol smiled, then began leading the way out of the alley.

“How do you know where you're going??” Shilo asked, jogging to catch up with him.

“I thought we agreed we would only talk about my career?”

“Yeah, but you're acting weird. And like, a different sort of weird from… what did you call him?” She gestured back down the alley. The GraveRobber had disappeared.

“Robber. Short for GraveRobber. I don't think he remembers his first name. Shilo, there's a lot you don't know… about everything. At this point, I don't think staying inside or sneaking out can help you.”

She was quiet as they walked along the dirty road, their faces lit in a flurry of neons as they passed by signage and under streetlamps. “You know my dad, don't you?” She eventually asked. “How? Were you a patient of his?”

“I won't tell you these things,” Aniol insisted, turning the corner. “Now, either ask me something about movies or please, be quiet.”

Eventually, she did begin asking about Aniol's work, which he patiently explained each process of, from writing to casting to actually filming something. Soon, they appeared at the back end of Shilo and Nathan's home.

“Can you climb the fence?” Aniol asked. Shilo nodded.

“Of course I can, I've been doing this since I was thirteen.”

“Thirteen?!”

“Shhh!!”

“Shilo…” Aniol’s tone was distinctly parental as she began the climb. She looked down at him as she scrabbled up onto her balcony. They shared a long gaze before she slipped inside and drew her curtains. Aniol exhaled and made his way back to his own home. Oh, Nathan…

Can you explain the plot of repo the genetic opera?

So Repo-Man, AKA Nathan Wallace works at a company named Geno.Co which specializes in giving people new organs and such to live, at the price of paying installments, if they miss the installments they will be hunted down and their Gene.Co organ will be repossessed.

Nathan has a 17-year-old daughter named Shilo, who suffers from a blood condition given to her by her late mother, Marni. Where in actuallity, her mother was killed when Nathan was trying to cure her, the found of Gene.Co, Rotti Largo, had a nurse slip a possessions chemical into Nathan's lab. Nathan was only able to save one (baby Shilo), and Gene.Co offered to keep his "murder" under the rug if he works for them as a repo.

Rotti has a terminal illness and has to decide who to give his company to: Luigi? With his bad temperament. Pavi? With his affinity for stealing faces. Or Amber? With her ever changing looks and no-show reputation. Luigi and Pavi having a constant rivalry of who will inherit the company.

There is a highly addictive painkiller called Zydrate which is usually sold by Gene.Co but can be bought on the black market for cheaper. It is commonly used by junkies and Rotti's own daughter, Amber Sweet. She's also supposedly in a relationship with the Zydrate supplier, know as Graverobber.

Half way or so into the film Shilo meets her God Mother who use to be her late mother's best friend, Blind Mag. She was given new eyes when Marni and Rotti were dating, in return she works as the face of Gene.Co, using her talented voice the opera. Unfortunately, she can't leave the company or else the Repo-Man will come and take her eyes.

That's all I'm gonna say cuz I don't wanna spoil the whole movie. It is pretty good, a lot of love and detail put into it, although sometimes it can feel awkward because they have singing in areas that could just be dialog instead of having it jump around in tone and ruin the moment. The main songs are amazing though! Phenomenal soundtrack!

So if that small bit of plot explanation sounds interesting I'd suggest to go watch it. There's some familiar actors in it if you're good with your horror films! 👀

🚆 TRAIN - what is their answer to the trolley problem?

Oh this is a fucking FASCINATING question for Amaya. Amaya very firmly believes that violence is never acceptable and that there is always a way out that can prevent suffering. Whenever things get dangerous, Amaya devises a system she tries to hold herself and everyone to that prevents any unnecessary pain. But she can’t even accept “necessary” suffering. She will writhe and fight for righteousness until it leaves her bleeding.

When it came down to it, Amaya would follow her moral principles and kill one person to save the others. But she would never. Ever let that go. There is no such thing as a necessary or righteous sacrifice to Amaya. She only does it to prevent as much pain as she can.

Her solution to the trolley problem is to kill one person to save many who would die if she didn’t. In her eyes, it’s the difference between killing one person and killing five. Everyone’s suffering is on her, and she needs to stop as much of it as she can.

🌈 RAINBOW - what advice would they give to their younger self?

I’m not sure, honestly. Amaya has some childhood trauma she still hasn’t worked through stemming mostly from the instability rooted in her father not being present in her life. But there isn’t really much she could say to guide her younger self through that. The most I could think is giving her childhood self insight on the way she sees the world now. She had a fascination with historical tragedies that have allowed her to feel she can learn from them. I think that’d be the best she could do.

Her advice would be “have you watched barefoot gen yet. You should watch barefoot gen and then check that book about world war 2 out from the school library. Trust me on this one”

📣 MEGAPHONE - how loud are they? what do they speak like? got a voice claim?

Amaya speaks at a pretty normal level. When she gets uncertain, she speaks more clearly, which she describes as being “like [she’s] trying to make [her] words the truth.” When she gets angry or loud, she can command attention, but that stresses her the fuck out. In normal conversation, she tends to ramble, and she gets really long winded when she gets excited. She doesn’t really yell when she’s excited so much as she just keeps talking and talking. Her train of thought always tends to go back to her two primary special interests: history and the eroguro movement, and she’s usually talking about that.

Changes from the canon otherwise;

Sans and Pap are playing a married couple, according to the REPO canon- this is retconned bc this is not that kind of AU. The lost relationship here is the deep-rooted brother bond that we see in every instance of Undertale AUs. 

Sans and Frisk have an uncle/niece relationship, with Pap having played the role of 'adoptive father' for Frisk previously. 

Frisk is about 10 when they arrive and is the REPO-canon 17 during the events of the 'opera'.

The same can be said for the Asgore as Rotti and Pap as Marni dynamic- the 'unrequainted obsessive love' situation is replaced with Asgore having wanted Papyrus as his Hand. Frustrated by Sans keeping Pap from agreeing to this role and getting in the way, this obsession only becomes worse when Pap dies and leaves him with no probable hand.

Except, well, there's the judge (good doctor?) Sans (Nate) and gee, his powers sure do come in handy in this fell-adjacent version of the underground! He puts that to good use via blackmail- Sans thinks he's at fault for the circumstances of Pap's death and while it's actually Asgore behind it, Asgore uses this belief to control Sans.

Frisk is in a stalled pacifist run- halted by Pap's death but seemingly unaware of resets. This is their very first run and so far they haven't died. Flowey doesn't leave the ruins with Frisk in this fell-adjacent setting, one of the biggest differences from the original fell canon. Forced to live most of her life inside the skelehouse after Pap's death because Sans is tired and stressed enough as it is with his double life and trying to keep his promise to Pap that he'd protect this kid.

Papyrus is the one who takes a liking to Frisk and literally adopts the kid when they wander out of the ruins, a mess and half dead. He literally dies protecting them and forces Sans to make the fateful promise to protect the kid and keep them alive. Dies off screen, Asgore 'finds' him and claims it to be Sans' fault to divert when Sans finds him with the evidence. "You should have been there to protect him! You're his older brother, where were you!?"

Toriel is blackmailed / extorted into being an active Queen and Asgore's wife against her will and this removes her tutorial role entirely- she is instead fully immersed in the role of Mag. She sees her dead child Chara in Frisk instead of having any true relation to the brothers. She was once friends with Sans through the door as per the usual canon, but her returning to being Queen after some time being the crazy ruins lady ended that friendship prematurely.

Asgore as Rotti is rich with souls and level. He is dying, as per the REPO canon, and doesn't want to leave his wealth and kingdom to any of his various subleaders- Undyne, who leads the Guard/Military as the General; Alphys, royal scientist, as Pavi (who craves praise vicariously through her tech, especially Mettaton) and Mettaton, whose inhabitance of the robotic body is only managed with unhealthy and destructive DT Dose / Upgrade cycles, leading to further and further instability but dependence- as per Amber Sweet.

Nathan: At first this was tricky, but then, once I thought of him, I wasn’t able to think of anyone else. Namely Hugh Jackman xD He’s got that ambivalence that makes the character of Nathan Wallace, he can be fearsome (think X-Men), but he’s also such a sweetheart and a great “Father” (Les Mis, Greatest Showman). And I think he’d totally rock this part. Oooh, just thinking how he would suffer during “Legal Assassin”, or portraying the transition Nathan -> Repo Man during “Night Surgeon” … I’m getting chills just thinking about it xD 

Blind Mag/Marni Wallace: I’ve put them together because I couldn’t decide between Tarja Turunen (ex-Nightwish) and Simone Simons (Epica) for either. They are both very VERY capable singers (I guess most of you could know them?). And I would LOVE to see Simone in some of Mag’s costumes, because she is sooooo beautiful, but Tarja has that “Mag”-Vibe that would fit so well and yeaaah … I just don’t know ^^’ And since we know Marni was also a singer, it would fit either ^^ But I think I’d like Simone a little bit more … 

Amber: Katharine Isabelle. That was the first one I thought of and she’s the only Amber I can imagine apart from Paris <3 As my followers know, I've loved every second of American Mary because of her, and I think she’d have a lot of fun playing that part. 

Luigi: Bill Skarsgard. He’s got that interesting face while emitting some kind of charme and charisma, and think could really act out on the temper issues xD

Pavi: That was actually quite hard, and I’m not totally happy with the people I came up with. I think it would be funny to use someone who’s naturally good-looking like Zac Efron or Matt Bomer, but then I thought of Ryan Reynolds and how much fun he’d have … But as I said, these are not very good picks :/ 

Graverobber: Also very hard. I thought of different people, but am also not very happy with what I came up with xD Names that popped up are Sacha Baron Cohen, Tim Curry and Johnny Depp. Each special in their own way and quite peculiar, but as Graverobber? Then I thought of Ryan Reynolds again and how funny it would be to see him act out “Zydrate Anatomy” and “Come up and try my new parts” with his wife, Blake Lively xD Mh, but to be honest I have no idea who I’d cast :/ 

Rotti: I actually have more picks for Rotti than I originally thought! At first I thought of Russel Crowe (I loved him and his singing voice on LesMis), then Jack Nicholson came to mind along with Danny DeVito (just for the giggles). Theeeen I thought, Wait, why not try something different? And then I landed on Jessica Lange, and actually loved the idea of making this role female :D I really think Jessica would be amazing.

And last but not least: Rotti’s Bodyguards MUST be played by the Soska Sisters as a cameo xD

• Fae- Actual owner of the body. Has not been fully “themself” since they were like 6 (when Harl got here). Always co-cons with someone because they can’t stand being out alone.  Doesn’t know or care what we do with their life. Terrified of people. Has left us alone for extended periods of time. If you think you’ve talked to them, there’s a 99% chance it was actually Claire, Amanda, or Becky.  Actually a very sweet kid, but very hurt. Will go to the end of the world for their friends. Can hold a grudge like nobody’s business. Paints themself as a bitch but is a softie. Their mom cannot tell the difference between them and Becky. Diabetic, to Nidia’s displeasure. Closet Gryffindor turned Slytherin in order to survive.

• Amanda – Our system’s “guard dog”/Head Bitch in Charge. Much more complicated than that. The real author of Fae’s thigh scars (barely visible now), and maybe the only reason we made it through high school. The little voice that says “kill everyone and blame it on me”. Zero concern for consequences for herself. Impulse control consists of “Jail is awful and Fae doesn’t deserve it”.  She’s over 30.

• Lisbeth (Sally)- Just…Sally. The other voice that wants to kill everyone but doesn’t because she actually thinks about the consequences of her actions. Max is technically her partner, but we don’t talk about that (you can ask). I think she’s 30-something, but might as well be Fae’s age.

• Claire- Possibly Fae’s projection of herself into different universes. She can be 6, 17, 24 and 35. Last name Constantine. From Liverpool. Awful accent. Please don’t call her Australian. Another closet Gryffindor turned Slytherin.  Most of Fae’s friends are actually hers. Has been Fae for longer than Fae has been Fae. Likes soccer and we’re sorry. Punk. Hella Punk. Also hella broke.

• Mara- Claire’s sister (maybe twin). Approach with caution. (One of the several sexual alters, can be the same ages as Claire) Responsible for most of Fae’s awful dating decisions.

• Valentina- Rarely comes out, but she’s apparently God? We don’t know. Seems like she knows everyone, though. She always looks 20-something, but we know she’s older.

• Nidia- Claire’s daughter and the pure incarnation of Fae’s ADHD. A Jedi. Weirdest kid EVER. Super compassionate. Wears heart on her sleeve.  Can be 5, 9, 16 and 21. Impulse control is 100% artificial, but existent. Can, like Amanda, drink up to 3 cans of Monster Energy Drink in a row without batting a lash. Will eat ALL THE CANDY. The reason we need to carry an extra insulin syringe with us most of the time. Pours fun dip and sweetarts into her drinks. The kind of kid child leashes were invented for.

• Hellena- Mara’s daughter. STAY AWAY. Evil incarnate. Abusive A.F. Can and will destroy you. In her 20’s

• Christine- Hell’s identical twin. Remember that girl in Mean Girls who wants to bake a cake out of sunshine and rainbows and smiles? Christine is that cake. Rarely out. Same age as Hell.

• Evey- Hell and Chris’ big sister. That one kid with the pink hair and lots of tattoos. Zero impulse control.  Always looks like a teenager for some reason (not over 25)

• Vlad- Agender/Genderqueer mystical creature of the forest. Valentina’s child. Awesome person in general. Permanently 17.

• Harley- Yup. THAT Harley. You know the drill. She’s actually the one who makes all the fun plans because she’s the one who has the energy for it. Gets along with everyone until she doesn’t. Can drink us all under the table. Can drink you under the table. Has been Fae for longer than Claire has been Fae. Was the first one here, so she has tattoo privileges. And dating privileges. And everything privileges, basically. If I say how old she is, I may not live to see another day. Fae’s real mum. Will take you to Petco on exam week to pet puppies. Will yell “doge!” out loud.

Pets every dog. Will steal Teddy from Max.

• Edward- Mr. Nigma, sir. Somehow has better makeup skills than all the girls here combined.  If his attitude was as nice as his eyebrows, he’d rule the world by now. EVERYTHING HAS QUESTION MARKS. Knows more than anyone.  Is actually a genius. Wastes his time trying to school the little ones (and trying to get Naya to use proper words).  Smug bastard. Probs 40-something.

• Cass- Also from comics. EVERYTHING IS YELLOW (yiyo). Doesn’t talk much, but is always fun to have around. Will make you watch animated movies and take you to Starbucks. Will also make you work out. Can be 5, 9, 18 and 25. Smol Cass is a fan of pokemon. If it’s yellow, it belongs to her.

• Naya- Cass’ child. Has her own language, featuring words like “kaijukata”, “pakato”, and “omashii” (“Kaiju attack”, an insult of her own invention, and her word for “mother”.) There are no sidewalks, only pedestrian lanes. Biggest Kaiju Enthusiast. Wants to be Mako Mori.

• M.J.- Has been here for as long as Harley has. Isn’t around as much. The difference between her and Claire is that you can actually understand what MJ says when she gets mad. Probs 25 forever.

• Danni- Amanda’s daughter. Will also fuck you up. Has the weirdest kinks.  23

• Miranda- Danni’s daughter. Don’t ask. Also a sexual alter. 21

• Martha- Miranda’s sister. Level-headed.  A psychiatrist. 21. Actually the most mature person in this head, along with Tári.

• Alice- Nidia’s daughter. Also a psychiatrist. Likes psychoanalyzing people. Type 1 bipolar. Thinks all Arkham inmates are humans and wants to help. Will probably end up as an Arkham Inmate herself. Age slides. Toddler Alice is the devil. Can be 5, 9, and 21

• Alyssa- Mara’s best friend. Take Alice out of wonderland and teach her ballet, then add a sprinkle of Luna Lovegood. Permanently 17-ish.

• Robin- Alice’s little sister. Wants to be Carrie Kelly when she grows up. Terrified of squirrels. Can be 5 and 18. Lesbiab. Lesebeb. Girls. Yes.

• Tári- Alice and Robin’s eldest sister. Autistic. Genius extraordinaire. Loves to talk to Eddie. Often one of them leaves the conversation feeling stupid (it isn’t Tári). Loves Legos. REALLY LOVES LEGOS. Forensic Anthropologist/ wants to be Bones when she grows up. Vegetarian. Can be 12/17/21.

• Frances- Harley’s kid. Don’t ask, this was super weird. Frances herself is super weird. She hears voices. The voices tell her to do things. She rarely listens. Actually super polite. Has “opal” hair. 18-20. We don’t really know.  If we’re gonna have a sub-system, it will probably be because of Frankie.

• Shilo- Shilo Wallace. Infected by her genetics. Her nightmares are the worst. Once made Amanda and Sally fight over a pair of combat boots just so she could get to keep them. Probably Becky’s best friend in here.

• Bellatrix- That one got here on her own. Over 50. Still looks great.

• Azula- also got here on her own.

• Cassiopeia- Bella’s biggest mistake. Best teacher ever. Resident hipster chick. Is actually here to keep a little group of alters from causing too much mayhem.  28.

• Ascella- Lesbian extraordinaire. Sees dead people. I’m not even kidding. Permanently 23.

• Jamie Moriarty- Another one who got here on her own. Our self confidence boosts and power trips. Will maybe kill someone. Better than you and is not afraid to let you know.  Fae’s teachers were terrified of her.

• Lestat- Fae’s gay vampire boyfriend. Is rarely around anymore. Probably for the best. 260-ish years old. Prick.

• Lindsay - THE definitive Sexual alter. From a comic book oneshot. Amanda on steroids, but if Amanda knew how to socialize. Loves horror, movies, photography and monsters. 26. 

• Becky - Called “morbid” for a reason. Disabled as all fuck. Autistic/ADHD, connective tissue disorder. A lawyer. Loves to argue. Jon Crane’s wife (at least here). 30ish. Always cold and always in pain. If we cancel plans, it’s most likely her fault and she’s sorry.

• Liliana - Necromancer. Big Titty Goth GF. We love and cherish her, alcoholism and all. Will never be over Jace and she knows it.

• Chandra - Pyromancer extraordinaire with severe ADHD. A lot like Fae in a lot of ways. Decidedly Pansexual, thank you very much. 25.

• Vraska - Ravnican to the core, but also a fantastic pirate. Great leader, good friend, fun to be around. Has the huskiest voice in the system. Has the worst flashbacks out of all of us. Can be 19 and 29. • Kari - Vraska and Jace’s kid. Hypermelanistic gorgon, telepath like her dad. Fun to be around. Can be 7, 12 and 25.

• Ral - Very very Izzet, and very very gay, and we love him for it. Very intelligent, good at fixing and making things with his hands. Confident, charismatic, and a workaholic. Tomik’s husband. Sometimes with Max. In his 40’s

• Tomik - Ral’s husband. Quiet, but very caring and polite.Also very smart and hard-working, always loves to learn new things and meet new people. 27-ish. Very gay, too. Makeup skills up there with Eddie’s.

• Teysa - Tomik’s boss. A Boss Ass Rich Bitch, and we love her lots for it. Very polite and interesting to be around. Could buy us all and our families ten times. Old, but looks to be in her early 30’s.

• Avacyn - An angel from Innistrad. Here to protect us. Really likes listening to old pop-punk and emo music with Max. Very sweet to be around, although she can be a little literal-minded.

• Olivia - A Vampire and a bitch. Liliana’s...ex? Something. A lot like Teysa, but much more fun-loving and impulsive.

• Nahiri - Doesn’t come out much. Stern but caring, very savvy, doesn’t take anyone’s crap. Can hold on to grudges like her life depends on it.

the archetypical nancy drew

What do Sookie Stackhouse, Shilo Wallace, Edith Cushing, and Dana Polk have in common? Narrative role, vague genre, archetypes.

The point, or one of the points, of Cabin in the Woods is that archetypes are very stupid. But they’re also all too common in stories, especially those in more fantastical genres, and for the purposes of this discussion I am going to refer back to Dana’s designated archetype: the Virgin. In Cabin, the five central characters are assigned archetypes in order to fill the roles that the evil organization needs them to fill to satisfy basic horror story plots. True Blood, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Crimson Peak, and The Cabin in the Woods are all adjacent to the horror genre in one way or another, so it’s reasonable that their characters might all vaguely fit into horror genre archetypes.

…Maybe that’s a better name for this archetype: the Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew is, as I’m sure many of you know, the titular teen detective in countless suburban mystery novels published by a series of authors going by Carolyn Keene. There have been film and television adaptations (that I’ve never watched), an unauthorized parody (Confessions of a Teen Sleuth by Chelsea Cain, which I absolutely have read and recommend), a bunch of computer games (I’ve never played them, but I follow someone on tumblr who has and they seem, uh, interesting), at least one comic adaptation (I’ve read the first volume and it’s precious)… Nancy Drew is pretty ubiquitous. The original novels are old, so there are problematic elements, but in general the idea of Nancy Drew is pretty pure: she and her friends solve crimes better than whatever authority figures the story features, using their wits and their go-getter attitudes. Nancy herself is very similar to the above characters. They all solve whatever mysteries surround them, they all give things their all, they all stick their noses in where perhaps they shouldn’t, they’re all relatively kind people most of the time.

I guess this is an essay about Sookie Stackhouse, Shilo Wallace, Edith Cushing, Dana Polk, and Nancy Drew now. Nancy predates the others, though, so she gets to be our figurehead. She’s also the only one not from a horroresque story, but the character traits she exhibited in teenage pulp mysteries carries over into horror stories (in part because horror has mystery elements, in part because horror is a form of modern pulp, in part just because).
