                    ok. maybe that sounded a little demanding, which, technically he is but he’s DESPERATE. herkie is not the most SOCIAL guy ( chalk that up as understatement of the year ), mostly because he hides all social insecurity with forced apathy and, if worse comes to worse, tears. just his luck, though, his teammates have had enough of the demigod’s son slinking off after games to enjoy a protein shake in peace.

                    that, at least sounded a little better? so catch herkie throwing on his nicest grey joggers and slipping on an obnoxiously expensive aubergine crewneck harper had insisted he buy, before dawdling in his car the rest of the thirty minutes outside her place, either tapping his fingers on the steering wheel or fixing his hair for the FIFTIETH FUCKING TIME. BOY. PLEASE. finally, he jogs up to delilah’s door, knocking once and offering an almost-apologetic smile. “ i owe you my life. and, uh, you look really. you look good. ”

                    the boy sprawls on his bed, feet hanging over the edge as herculean muscles melt into jelly after a tortuous tourney practice. too lazy to change out of his sweaty, stinky clothes for at least five more minutes, he’s simply wallowing in his fatigue and scrolling through his facebook feed, watching a few videos from his favorite workout pages. hearing the door open, azure hues flicker to catch sight of his roommate. he laughs without thought, remi’s outfit is------

                    “ what are you wearing? ” he teases incredulously, a rare smile curving his lips. the prince is just TOO MUCH, with his brands and labels and style, but somehow? as ridiculous as his LOOKS are to herkie, he’s always annoyed at how cute ? remi makes them look. “ where were you? hot date? ”

                    “ so as future QUEEN OF THE DEAD or whatever, ” herkie begins, sliding to sit across from his------ cousin? helena is his cousin, right? gods, their family tree was fucked. “ do you hang out with the ghosts or is there a no fraternizing with the ghosts rule? ” pondering his own mortality is an annoyingly common activity for him when EVERYONE around the athlete seems to be eternally everlasting. he stretches out at the cafeteria table, amazed with how much room he has not sitting with the rest of the tourney team and just beginning to decide what of his especially huge lunch he’ll be devouring first. ( is this mac and cheese paleo-friendly? )

                    “ just, you know, wondering. since someday i’m going to be one of those ghosts. ”

                    “ oh, uh, thank you ? ” he’s horrible at accepting gifts, horrible at getting any attention, really, no matter how much he CRAVES IT. it’s easier, at least, when the attention is something he’s done something to deserve ( mostly crying in public places because that, at least, is easier than confronting WHAT makes saltwater tears leak from his eyelids ). the tourney field is the only place herkie really feels he deserves recognition, for a great block or spectacular save. but the resident queen bee of auradon prep offering him a blue and gold bag of goodies catches him off-kilter. CASTLECOMING. right. he’s been so focused on the game, the cheerleader’s special tradition of hyping up his team hadn’t even crossed his mind.

                    “ seriously, thanks. this is really cool that you guys do this, ” the minor demigod adjusts, the smallest, purest quirk of a grin ( his single dimple almost visible ) touches his lips as he accepts the treats. “ we should do SOMETHING for you, too. is there, uh, anything that? the cheer team might need this week ? we could make you a tunnel before the pep rally, at least. ”
