Today, we know from the research of Jason Hickel and his colleagues that in 2021 the Global North was able to extract from the Global South 826 billion hours in net appropriated labor. This represents $18.4 trillion measured in Northern wages. Behind this lies the fact that workers in the Global South receive 87–95 percent lower wages for equivalent work at the same skill levels. The same study concluded that the wage gap between the Global North and the Global South was increasing, with wages in the North rising eleven times more than wages in the South between 1995 and 2021. This research into the contemporary global labor arbitrage is coupled with recent historical work by Utsa Patnaik and Prabhat Patnaik that has now documented the astronomical drain of wealth during the period of British colonialism in India. The estimated value of this drain over the period of 1765–1900, cumulated up to 1947 (in 1947 prices) at 5 percent interest, was $1.925 trillion; cumulated up to 2020, it amounts to $64.82 trillion. It should be emphasized that the Global North’s contemporary drain of economic surplus from the Global South, via the unequal exchange of labor embodied in exports from the latter, is in addition to the normal net flow of capital from developing to developed countries recorded in national accounts. This includes the balance on merchandise trade (import and exports), net payments to foreign investors and banks, payments for freight and insurance, and a wide array of other payments made to foreign capital such as for royalties and patents. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the net financial resource transfers from developing countries to developed countries in 2017 alone amounted to $496 billion. In neoclassical economics, this is known as the paradox of the reverse flow of capital, or of capital flowing uphill, which it ineffectively tries to explain away by various contingent factors, rather than acknowledging the reality of economic imperialism. With respect to the geopolitical dimension of imperialism, the focus this century has been on the continuing decline of U.S. hegemony. Analysis has concentrated on the attempts of Washington, since 1991, backed by London, Berlin, Paris, and Tokyo, to reverse this. The goal is to establish the triad of the United States, Europe, and Japan—with Washington preeminent—as the unipolar global power through a more “naked imperialism.” This counterrevolutionary dynamic eventually led to the present New Cold War. Yet, despite all of the developments in imperialism theory over the last century, it is not the theory of imperialism so much as the actual intensification of the Global North’s exploitation of the Global South, coupled with the resistance of the latter, that has stood out. As Sweezy argued in Modern Capitalism and Other Essays in 1972, the sharp point of proletarian resistance decisively shifted in the twentieth century from the Global North to the Global South. Nearly all revolutions since 1917 have taken place in the periphery of the world capitalist system and have been revolutions against imperialism. The vast majority of these revolutions have occurred under the auspices of Marxism. All have been subjected to counterrevolutionary actions by the great imperial powers. The United States alone has intervened militarily abroad hundreds of times since the Second World War, primarily in the Global South, resulting in the deaths of millions. In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the primary contradictions of capitalism have been those of imperialism and class.

La casa de papel NSFW alphabet
From D-F.
»» Part 1 || Part 3 || Part 4 ««
Pairing: Nairobi - Berlin - Denver - Tokyo - Professor - Alicia x gn!reader Genre: Smut, headcanons Warning(s): Sexual content. Sub/dom dynamics, possessiveness/jealousy, public-sex, bondage, toys, gender-neutral reader - tried making the pairings/dynamics as gender-neutral as possible, lmk if it was gendered in any way so I can fix it! <3 Words: 1.1K Summary: NSFW alphabet with the LCDP character, D-F. What are they like in bed? English is not my main language, if I make any spelling mistakes please let me know so I can improve my writing! <3
Nairobi
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
Nairobi is good at hiding it, but she’s really jealous and possessive.
Especially after she started dating you.
She doesn’t want to come across as the “crazy”/jealous girlfriend, so she’s good at hiding it.
She trusts you wholeheartedly, but still she doesn’t like it when people flirt with you.
You’re hers, and she wants everyone to know it.
The thought of taking you to a public bathroom or wherever you may be - to make you scream her name - is a turn on.
She wants everyone to hear your sweet voice calling out your name as she claims you as hers.
She also likes leaving hickeys in visible places.
Mostly to mark you up
But also because she thinks you look so cute covered in her love marks.
Although, she also likes the thought of you flirting with someone to make her jealous
…So she can fuck you dumb and have you repeat “I’m yours”
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
She is pretty experienced.
She hasn’t had many sexual partners but has experience
She does a lot of solo play too, and knows what she likes and dislikes in bed.
Very considerate with your preferences too.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Likes the classics - missionary and 69.
Likes being on top and bottom equally, tho she prefers being in charge
She likes seeing your face when fucking you, so she really can pay attention to your sweet reactions.
I feel like Nairobi has a couple of strap-ons, so any position where she can use them on you is good ;)
Berlin
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
He likes the idea of blindfolding you, often using his own ties or putting satin blindfolds over your eyes.
Knowing you’re completely at his mercy excites him.
He’ll get the chance to use whips on you, tease your skin with feathers and make you shiver with his touch.
…This way, he can tease you too.
Probably cruel and doesn’t touch you, have you on edge and begging for it.
Only to give you the pleasure needed when you least expect it.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
Homeboys have four ex-wives… That’s all I’ll say.
He knows how to pleasure you, and also knows what he likes in bed.
Very attentive and catches up on what you like and dislike in bed.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Doggy style.
He loves having you on all fours, grabbing your hips and thrusting into you.
The position gives him the opportunity to take you on other places besides the bed.
The kitchen counters, against a table, the shower wall…. You name it.
This man is creative af lmao
He’s an ass guy, how can he not love doggy?
Denver
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
Although Denver is usually on top, he wants you to totally dominate him.
Handcuffs, toys, orgasm denial, whatever…
He wants to try it - and be the one to receive it.
He’s turned on by the thought of you totally slutting him out.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
Homeboy knows what he’s doing
And DAMN, he’s good.
He has had casual flings and partners before you, so he is very experienced.
…And not shy to brag about it.
He seems to know just how to pleasure you, without even trying that hard.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Doggy styleeee
He loves taking you from behind
Being able to pull your hair, to squeeze your ass…
Apart from that, he likes 69
Tokyo
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
She likes teasing you, not necessarily to start an argument, rather because she thinks you’re hot when angry or frustrated
She knows exactly what buttons to push to make you mad, but also knows how to be seductive when teasing.
In a way, she’s turned on by being a “brat” and eventually have you losing it
…Which hopefully ends up with sex
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
Tokyo is experienced.
Definitely knows how to satisfy you and herself.
Likes guiding you, telling you exactly where and how to touch her
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
D O G G Y (idk why I headcanon half of the characters to love that, but it makes sense?? 😭)
She knows you like her ass (and she loves it too lmao) so she likes teasing you with it when in doggy position
Apart from that, she likes positions where she’s on top.
She wants to be in control of pace and really make you go feral under her.
Professor
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
Sergio likes roleplays.
Maybe not a dirty secret to others, but he’s pretty “vanilla” in bed
He likes it when you call him “Professor” in bed
He is a switch but leaning more towards being a sub, but when roleplaying, he likes being in charge and playing the roles of the dom.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
Not that much experience
Like he told Tokyo in one episode - he’s not a virgin, but is not the person that “sleeps around”
Sergio gives me demisexual vibes (same Sergio same)
I feel like he only sleeps with people he’s close with or really trusts.
He memorizes what you like, where you want to be touched etc to create the perfect experience for you
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Likes more intimate positions where he can be close to you
He wants to see your face when you have sex, and have your body tightly pressed against his.
Honestly? He doesn’t have a favorite. As long as it's a passionate one
Bonus point if you’re on top of him.
Alicia Sierra
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
Kinky AF
Homegirl has a lot of fantasies, from using handcuffs on you, BDSM and roleplays…
But her biggest “secret” is her fantasy to make a tape with you.
She wants to have sex with you, filming it - preferably with a video camera - and be able to watch it.
She probably has some intimate photos of you, on her phone AND printed out. (with permission ofc)
Audio files of your moans, too.
She wants to be able to hear your sweet sounds after being apart from you for too long
Probably listens to it to get off, or as an “ASMR” to fall asleep lmao 😭
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
Very experienced
She’s had a few partners so she knows what she’s doing
Alicia is open and honest with what she likes
Very passionate and experimental in bed, open to finding brand new ways to satisfy yours and her needs.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Likes spicing it up with more “complicated” positions
Not a fan of missionary to be honest
She prefers being on top
Any position where you’re submissive underneath her will do it ;)

THE FAUX HEIR, ALUMNUS ✦ M ✦ 27.
KING OF SPADES, YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE HEIR — the inconvenient proof of a fleeting affair, a secret raised in obscurity, a footnote in a history written by men who never spoke your name. But fate, ever fickle, turned its gaze your way. A sudden death, a widow’s careful mourning, and the ink dried on a will that left you standing at the gates of a kingdom that was never meant to be yours. A dynasty that spans continents, its wealth ancient and inescapable—New York, Tokyo, Berlin, Dubai—every city bending beneath its touch. And now, it's yours. They whisper that you do not belong, that your mother played her hand too well, that fortune was never meant to favor the unwanted child. They wait for you to falter, to fold beneath the weight of their scrutiny. But you have sharpened yourself on solitude, armored yourself in silence. You will not kneel. You will not bow. Let them call you imposter, usurper, a wretched mistake. You will carve your name into the marrow of this inheritance, claim everything that you touch by conquest.
DYNAMICS
THE PRINCE ✦ MA MEILLEURE ENNEMIE.
YOU TWO WERE ONCE INSEPARABLE —two souls forged with the same wild fire, bound by whispered secrets and the reckless certainty of youth. You knew each other in a way no one else ever could, moving in sync, standing back to back against the world. But time is a sculptor, and it has carved your relationship into something unrecognizable. It was a sharp turn, a sudden change of course, a conflicting type of appetite that tore you two apart. It wasn’t meant to end this way, really. And yet, now, when you look at the PRINCE, you hardly see the same favorite friend. Instead, you see how they circle you like a twin comet on a collision course, caught between rivalry and reverence, admiration and resentment, love and ruin. It is not a question of whether you will destroy each other. It is only a question of who will strike first.
THE VIGILANTE ✦ YOU ARE A WEAPON I SHARPEN.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NOTHING — a fleeting indulgence, a whispered night behind locked doors, the kind of mistake that vanishes with the dawn. You were both too sharp for this, too calculating. And yet, in the dim glow of a room that should have been forgotten, you let your guards slip. You should be strangers, yet secrets have a way of binding people, and in a world where trust is currency and deception is survival, knowing someone’s real face — even for a night — can become valuable in unexpected ways. Since then, you and the VIGILANTE have grown into something else — co-conspirators, confidants, an unspoken tether in a world where everyone is playing someone else.
THE MIMIC ✦ YOU MOVE WHERE I MOVE, SPEAK WHERE I SPEAK.
YOU ARE EFFORTLESSLY MAGNETIC — leaving admirers and rivals in your wake. Your presence demands attention, not because you ask for it, but because the air shifts when you enter, as if the universe itself is waiting for your next move. You deserve a natural applause. The MIMIC? They are a riddle wrapped in silk and secrets, a persona always knowing more than they should. You've noticed how they hear the whispers before they become rumors, see the shifts in power before scales are tilted. Their latest subject of interest? You. You sense how they collect you in pieces—your laughter, your gestures, the cadence of your voice when you lie. You see it in the way they start to mirror you ever so slightly, in the offhand remarks that sound too much like something you would say, in the way they play the same games.

leaving - about post-travel blues
I’ve been on five vacations this year.
Cote d’azur, Morroco tour, Berlin city trip, Italy with my mom, Mallorca with my cousin, even had a flight booked to Portugal that I couldn’t take and also still thinking of flying to Paris for a lost weekend.
In between those trips, I would either work at the city I study in or take the train to my hometown to see my friends and family.
In between those smaller trips, I would rent a car or book a train to see the extended family.
This year felt like I was sitting on a train for the most part.
The food in my fridge was either never enough or too much and gone bad because I had to leave again.
I’m never there and never here.
Wherever you are, I am not but at the same time I am and you don’t know.
I always seem to miss birthdays or have the most amazing time anywhere but at home.
And please do not pity me, which you probably wouldn’t have.
I deliberately chose to book each and every flight and my planner for next year is already full of ideas of where to travel even though it will be as draining and tiring as this year was.
Somehow, I feel like our generation - the generation of travelers - has become restless.
We fly or drive from country to country and meet so many new people, see new places, eat good and strange food, listen to music and feeling our hearts basically pounding out of our chests because the moments abroad are just so intense.
And then, you come home and have to settle back in to go to work, the gym or university.
You change your bed sheets and take a shower only to open Instagram and see a 15 second video of Brazil and beaches or Switzerland and skiing or Tokyos fast life and then, new ideas hit you, new cravings arise.
Obviously, I won’t dare to speak for everyone. All I know, is that the craving doesn’t stop.
We crave new adventures, new people, new places.
Who wouldn’t?
But the constant rush we get from traveling or social media or in general, the fast life, leaves us shallow and empty just when the front door closes and the travel bag gets dumped on the floor.
„You’re never happy because you’re always happy“
Relying solely on external experiences (like traveling) for happiness, a cycle of a fleeting high and built in emptiness might be created.
External pleasures do not ensure fulfillment, yet we don’t notice it because the high, the craving, the happiness feels so real when we’re traveling. The problem isn't its realness, because for the most part, this happiness is real.
It’s just lacking rootedness and foundation (Is that the same thing? I hate being redundant)
Now I'm not saying don’t travel, I’m saying be strong when you do.
You will become familiar with a sense of perpetual dissatisfaction and you will be swept off your feet.
You might experience the highest high there is and never return to it.
The paradox of "You're never happy because you're always happy" serves as a poignant reminder of the complexity of happiness.
While the thrill of constant movement and new experiences can undoubtedly bring joy, it is essential to recognize that sustainable happiness often requires a balance between external exploration and internal fulfillment.
Perhaps the key lies not just in the pursuit of destinations but also in cultivating a sense of depth, building meaningful connections, and finding contentment within oneself.
In embracing the ebb and flow of life, acknowledging that happiness is not a constant state but a dynamic journey, we may discover a more profound and lasting sense of fulfillment, even when the journey brings us back home.
There are a million more things I could say about this topic but I just got back home, my travel bag needs to be unpacked and I….well, I need to arrive.

Formula E reveals record calendar for 2024 but three venues are to be confirmed | 2024 Formula E season
Formula E has revealed its provisional calendar for the 2024 season, with 17 races taking place in 13 urban locations across the globe. Three of those venues are yet to be determined, while the planned addition of Tokyo still awaits confirmation from the Japanese motorsport federation. If all the races go ahead, it will be the longest FE season ever. FE has been working for several years on adding a race in Tokyo, and major progress was made last October when an agreement was signed for a race to take place. It gained local political support as part of a zero-emissions initiative in the city, and the track will use “roads around the Tokyo Big Sight convention centre on the Tokyo Bay waterfront”. Two demonstration runs of FE cars in Japan’s capital city took place in 2015 and 2016. There were reports another demo would take place ahead of the Tokyo joining the calendar next season. Should it receive ASN approval, then Tokyo’s race will be the seventh of the season and will run on 30th March, 2024. After assuming the season-opener slot for this year, Mexico City will kick the action off again for the championship’s 10th season next January, with a Diriyah double-header taking place at night time later in the month. February’s two rounds have no location next to their race dates. Following those the series will head to Sao Paolo for a second time in mid-March. The Brazilian city was first supposed to host FE back in 2018, but the race was postponed into the next season and then cancelled before finally taking place this year. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free After Tokyo, FE heads to Europe for a double-header in Rome, a race in Monaco then another double-header in Berlin. There is another ‘TBD’ slot on the calendar after that, then the season concludes with trips to Jakarta and Portland in June and then a London double-header in July. FE says it is in “advanced discussions with a range of potential host cities” for the yet to be determined rounds, with the indication that all of the candidates would be new locations for FE rather than returning venues such as Hyderabad and Cape Town which are included in this year’s calendar. Alberto Longo, FE’s chief officer, explained the logic behind the series’ venue selections for 2024: “The season 10 calendar represents our ongoing mission to create a dynamic schedule of new cities hosting races for the first or second time like Tokyo, São Paulo and Portland alongside established hosts like Berlin, Rome, London, Monaco, Diriyah and now Jakarta.” The FE grid will continue to consist of 11 teams for next season, which will be the second using the ‘Gen3’ car. If all 17 races take place it will be a new record for the series, which held 16 races last season and is scheduled to do so again this year. This article will be updated Formula E Browse all Formula E articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

"Sowing the Seeds of Love": A Tears for Fears Masterpiece of Pop Artistry
youtube
In the late summer of 1989, Tears for Fears released "Sowing the Seeds of Love," a song that transcended the boundaries of pop music to become a cultural touchstone. Over three decades later, its rich production, profound lyrics, and universal appeal continue to resonate, cementing its status as a masterpiece that speaks to both the heart and the mind.
The song’s production is a marvel of ambition and craftsmanship. Conceived as Roland Orzabal’s extravagant ode to the Beatles, it was a costly endeavor, reportedly exceeding a million pounds, with multiple musicians, scrapped demos, and a meticulous self-production process alongside Dave Bascombe. The result is a sonic tapestry that weaves together lush harmonies, dynamic crescendos, and intricate instrumentation. Moments like the triumphant bridge with its call to "eat all your words, swallow your pride, open your eyes," soar with an almost transformative energy, evoking chills and a sense of collective awakening. The deliberate nod to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, I Am the Walrus, and All You Need Is Love is unmistakable, yet Tears for Fears infuse their own identity, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and innovative. This is pop music as high art—complex, layered, and endlessly rewarding.
Lyrically, "Sowing the Seeds of Love" is a profound meditation on love, unity, and societal change. Its verses weave poetic imagery with sharp social commentary, critiquing political complacency and greed while championing the power of collective action. Lines like "High time we made a stand and shook up the views of the common man" and "Without love and a promised land, we’re fools to the rules of a government plan" are both revolutionary and timeless, urging listeners to reject apathy and embrace empathy. The recurring motif of "sowing the seeds of love" serves as a hopeful mantra, a call to plant the foundations for a better world. In an era marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the waning Cold War, the song captured a global yearning for peace and optimism. Yet its relevance endures, speaking to contemporary struggles—be it political division, environmental crises, or the search for human connection.
The song’s appeal is strikingly universal, bridging generations and cultures. For those who came of age in the 1980s, it evokes vivid memories of cassette tapes, radio airplay, and the electric optimism of a transformative decade. Its lush melodies and heartfelt message resonate with younger listeners, too, who discover it as a beacon of authenticity in a digital age. Its global reach is evident in the passionate responses it elicits, from Brazil to Japan, in languages as diverse as Portuguese, Polish, and Korean. Whether heard in a Tokyo restaurant, a California amphitheater, or a modern streaming playlist, the song’s ability to evoke nostalgia, inspire reflection, and unite listeners is unparalleled.
"Sowing the Seeds of Love" is more than a song—it’s a testament to the enduring power of music to inspire, challenge, and uplift. Its masterful production, profound lyrics, and universal appeal make it a rare gem in the pop canon, one that continues to bloom with each new listen. As we navigate an increasingly fractured world, Tears for Fears’ anthem reminds us to sow the seeds of love, to open our hearts and minds, and to believe in the possibility of a better tomorrow. It’s a message—and a masterpiece—that will never fade.

City Beats: Urban Music's Vibrant Evolution and Future Trends
The dynamic heartbeat of city life has consistently been a catalyst for musical evolution. Within these lively urban centers, a mix of cultures and interactions sparks the creation of innovative musical styles and trends, reshaping the contemporary music scene. In the glow of city lights, urban music thrives, characterized by genre breakthroughs, technological strides, and a transformation in celebrity culture.
Urban Music Development
City environments serve as incubators for musical innovation, giving rise to new genres and sub-genres. Across the globe, metropolises have nurtured styles like Afrohouse, Afrobeats, and Amapiano, particularly gaining traction in cities with large African diaspora populations such as Dubai, Paris, and New York. Similarly, genres like Hyperpop and Shoegaze are flourishing in the underground scenes of Tokyo and Berlin, offering fresh experiences for electronic music aficionados.
The inherent cultural diversity in urban areas stimulates cross-genre collaborations. This cultural melting pot allows artists from various backgrounds to blend styles, resulting in distinctive sounds. This is exemplified by the intriguing fusion of hip-hop and country showcased by artists like Beyoncé, mirroring the intricate cultural fabric of urban American areas. Additionally, niche styles like Jersey Club and Pluggnb are thriving in specific urban micro-communities, infusing the urban soundscape with lively nuances.
Technological Advancements
Advancements in technology significantly impact the music production and experience within cities. Spatial audio technology brings an immersive aspect to music, creating a three-dimensional sound experience. Urban music producers capitalize on this advancement, particularly in tech-advanced cities like San Francisco and Berlin, to elevate their auditory creations.
AI tools are also making a significant impact on urban music production, enabling creators to craft melodies, harmonies, and lyrics. These tools are transforming the music scene in tech-centric metropolises, allowing artists to expand creative limits.
Live Performances and Urban Culture
Live performances are being transformed through hybrid concerts that combine in-person attendance with global livestreams. Cities like Dubai and Paris are at the forefront of this trend, enhancing worldwide concert accessibility. Additionally, breakthroughs in holographic performances enable artists to perform virtually, introducing a futuristic element to live shows.
Sustainability in Urban Music
In response to increasing environmental awareness, the music industry in urban areas is moving towards sustainable practices. Artists are adopting eco-conscious touring strategies and sustainable vinyl production, demonstrating a commitment to minimizing environmental impact while engaging urban music fans.
Urban Music and Celebrity Culture
There is an evident shift in the relationship between urban music and celebrity culture. Growing scrutiny on celebrities’ wealth and influence is leading to a departure from traditional stardom. Urban music enthusiasts, from New York to Cairo, seek more genuineness and diversity, reshaping the industry’s landscape.
Best Practices and Actionable Insights
For professionals navigating the evolving urban music landscape, embracing genre fluidity is crucial. Welcoming cross-genre collaborations and global influences can create sounds that captivate diverse urban audiences. Utilizing advanced technology like spatial audio and AI can enhance both production and live performance quality.
Sustainability should not be overlooked, with environmentally friendly practices resonating with urban audiences' values. Engaging with niche styles and micro-communities ensures staying at the cutting edge of musical innovation as urban audiences move away from conventional stardom. Adapting to this shift by prioritizing authenticity and diversity can foster meaningful connections with fans.
The evolution of music in urban settings reflects a dynamic interplay of culture, technology, and transformation, painting a vibrant picture of the future of music.

Christopher Wool
Christopher Wool is best known for his paintings of large, black, stenciled letters on white canvases, but he possesses a wide range of styles; using a combined array of painterly techniques, including spray painting, hand painting, and screen-printing, he provides tension between painting and erasing, gesture and removal, depth and flatness. By painting layer upon layer of whites and off-whites over screen-printed elements used in previous works—monochrome forms taken from reproductions, enlargements of details of photographs, screens, and Polaroids of his own paintings—he accretes the surface of his pressurized paintings while apparently voiding their very substance. Only ghosts and impediments to the field of vision remain, each fixed in its individual temporality. Through these various procedures of application and cancellation, Wool obscures the liminal traces of previous elements, putting reproduction and negation to generative use in forming a new chapter in contemporary painting. His paintings can therefore be defined as much by what they are not and what they hold back as what they are.
Wool has forged an agile, highly focused practice that incorporates a variety of processes and mediums, paying special attention to the complexities of painting.

Give it Up or Turn It Loose, 1994

A central tenet of Christopher Wool’s (b. 1955) practice is the very process of painting itself. This has been explored and developed since his early years through reducing form and colour, as well as experimenting with different painting styles and reproduction techniques, such as silkscreen or pattern rollers, overlaying and erasing, covering or obscuring with paint, and adding layers on top. The range of techniques Wool has used over the years makes reference to the processes and gestures that have marked contemporary art history. The artist’s complex work encourages the viewer to reflect on the physical qualities of paint and various modes of reproduction, while honing an awareness of painting procedures and the essential elements of the medium: colour, form and line.
‘Christopher Wool’s paintings seem to capture visual urban experience, carved out of a moment for the duration of an artwork – an artwork that coverts the structures of experience into the structures of painting. Non-specific moments and impressions are lifted out of context and fixed into details of a painting that, unlike graffiti, conveys the speed and concentration of its origin only when it is contemplated over a measure of time in an art space. The dynamic of the picture’s conception becomes, very gradually, the dynamite of the thought it contains. Thought pictures.’
Christopher Wool’s paintings and prints explore the confluence of image, text, and pattern. They often feature enigmatic, confrontational found phrases or illegible scribbles, which are either stencilled or plastered in black across flat white fields. The artist occasionally covers the compositions with spray-paint marks and screen-printed elements (some taken from his previous works), erasing and relayering as he goes. His process—which focuses on the possibilities of reproduction, appropriation, and accretion—is as important as the results themselves. Wool studied at Sarah Lawrence College and the New York Studio School. New York’s vibrant 1970s downtown No Wave and punk scenes became major influences, and Wool reached his mature style in the mid-1980s. Wool has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, and beyond, and his work belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate. His work has achieved eight figures on the secondary market.
