You mentioned both Code Vein and God Eater in the past, and I only ever heard of those Games but never played them.

Would you recommend them (and if so, are there any must plays/holy order I should keep in mind)? Asking especially in regards to length and playtime, my free time is sadly limited, and I am not able to shove a new 200+ Hour game somewhere in there.

All of the games are closer to 60 hours, though GE 1 and 2 are listed at closer to a hundred for Completionist on How Long To Beat.

The God Eater games are all direct sequels, but playing previous games is not strictly necessary if you want to jump in at a later entry. Personally I'd recommend playing them in order, however. Though sadly the Steam version of 2 doesn't have the ability to check if you have GE1 save data like the original release, or if it does I don't know how.

(Though Steam bundles GE1 with GE2 for free)

Code Vein is a spinoff of the main series. It's actually technically a spoiler that they're connected but it was also conceived under the title God Eater Zero and I personally think knowing the connection enhances the experience. When it takes place is ambiguous (my theory is that it's simultaneous with the events of GE1) but it has subtle references to 1 and 2.

The games are not for everyone but I personally highly recommend them. The God Eater games are a sort of competitor to Monster Hunter, using a mission based structure where you enter an arena to kill monsters and scavenge materials. Code Vein is a Soulslike game, but from what I've seen of the genre, it's way more forgiving. They're also damn pretty games.

During the time of his disappearance, even though I knew Ren was gonna come back this time , I still cried like I did in the bad ending 🥲 and during their first reunion as well 🤧

I absolutely loved the affection heart thingy (I forgot the name lol) and how each day the description changed! When it showed "You're down bad for him. So bad." I related to that in my soul 😆

Playing your game was quite a ride bc I've never played Persona 5/P5R, only watched some gameplays (and not even of the full game since atlus has that weird rule 🤡), so many things at the end were a big surprise for me (like that whole alternative dimension thing and the red haired girl). That didn't affect my enjoyment tho! On the contrary, it's making me consider buying the P5R now that it's released on switch 😆

Throughout my gameplay today, each day that passed and scene that happened, I kept thinking "please don't end here, I want more 🥺". Don't get me wrong, the ending was so cute and sweet 🤧 I'm just really addicted to this vn and don't want to leave RenRen 😆 I can't wait to play the GE2 tomorrow!

short analysis: connecting the dots

march is here... which means the finale is coming at last!

while on the hunt for the release date of ge3′s 2.50 update on reddit, I came across this interesting bit someone wrote about soma that makes his presence in europe make sense story-wise. in the intro of ge3, it’s more or less assumed (for audiences outside japan only, which I will explain why in a bit) that soma traveled from the far east to europe after the calamity broke out. but if this new information is true, it changes the ballgame entirely.

now, the reason why I mentioned it being an ‘outsiders’ assumption is because the post below covers lore from ge: resonant ops; a JP only game, unfortunately, with little to no translations on the english side. because I can neither confirm or deny the lore for myself, I’m doing this quick write-up as though this were 100% true. read below:

IF this is true, then the following lore starts to connect with one another:

His connection with Hilda (considering she only knows him as ein, they had to have met after the calamity and likely during the time that ports were first being established. unless of course, she’s hiding his secret too. highly doubt that tho). 

It makes his push for creating adaptive armor even more tragic, considering he wasn’t even in the far east when the calamity happened. because the adaptive armor’s purpose is to ensure long distance travel, the stakes are raised even higher against him. not only does soma have to get the project off its feet (which has taken a lot of time already), but he also has to actually get there before its too late.

this is one of the many reasons why I really wished that resonant ops had an english release, or even translations, because its clear that much of the lore could help to explain the current situation in ge3. it’s also really weird, considering that every other game has had a global release... so as of right now, there’s just a HUGE gap between ge2 and ge3 that only JP fans are aware of. 

however, I hope that it gets included in ge3 via soma’s episode in the last update as compensation. that’s pretty much the gist of this entire post, since I found the reddit post interesting and wanted to share :)

This is just basically a whole ass post about Ami’s backstory through God Eater. I actually had a more fleshed out writing about it, but charahub died and it pretty much went with it. My toyhou.se kinda has it but I kinda had to scramble and it’s like word vomit so yeh.

You can skip it if you want, it don’t matter. Also SPOILERS FOR LIKE THE ENTIRE GAME SERIES.

So before she even became a God Eater she was part of a traveling caravan as far back as she can remember. When they were stopped at a checkpoint she was tested and confirmed a match as a potential God Eater at 15, but she officially joined the ranks at 16 when she was confirmed a bias for the New-Type. 

Joining the Far East branch. Her wep set up then was a short sword/buckler/and whatever that first gun was (tbh I didn’t start using the gun mode until GE2). Anyway, she has a talent for catching on quick to fighting Aragami, if not a bit silent. So when Lindow went MIA it completely wrecked her mentally. She had all this potential and yet couldn’t save the one person she wanted to save. She would lay down her life for all of Far East, especially the First Unit, but ngl she was crushing hard on Lindow (they joke about it together now, since she knew she never had a chance and she sees him as a dork at worst and a cool dad at best).

Shio completely changed her life and she finally realized what it meant to have a family. Especially with Soma, since the two were always on missions together for Shio. Which has the side effect that people think they a couple. They’re close but def not a couple, the Ami/Soma dynamic is more so brother and sister (they vibe really well and respect each other’s need for just silent moments; there are a many of times that someone would find them taking a nap together on a couch).

When Cradle got formed, she declined to join to stay within the Far East. After her childhood is filled with going from place to place she didn’t want to do that again (LOL). 

She transferred to Friar under Doctor Rachel’s request and forced insisted by Fenrir. Rachel somehow discovered that Ami’s bias can adapt to changes (taking up Lindow’s God Arc during the Hannibal storyline tipped her off). She worked well with the Blood Unit. There she changed to short blade/that middle gun that was OP/shield loadout. She cares a lot for the Unit, specifically Julius because being a leader is hard and she saw much of herself in him. That’s why during Romeo’s death and beyond she worked hard to get him back (an aside: Matt Mercer voiced Julius wonderfully, like it was a perfect fit). Over the course of this, she started to have feelings for Gil. And I guess he reciprocated (IT’S MY HEADCANON HE LOWKEY CRUSHES ON PROTAG DANGIT). The two are idiots and didn’t really realize it until they became normal humans again at the end of Rage Burst story. Literally for Ami it was like “Oh! Oh shit, I guess I did fall in love with him huh?” At least enough that they put on a ring on each other after being in a relationship for a couple years. And things were alright.

Except for when the Ash started. 

She’s a originally a resident of Dusty Miller, helping Ein out. Then there were rumors of Pennyworth being the most absolute shit with AGEs so she volunteered herself to go undercover and see how truly shit things have become. And because of her body being able to adapt to new Bias she was able to slip in as a new AGE, she can’t wield others’ god arc like Livie could at first, just that her body doesn’t reject getting a new bias (having her records hidden that she’s a renowned GE helps a lot; she looks sorta kinda young but actually the same age group as Ein and is a past acquaintance of his). There she met Hugo (either a couple months into him being an AGE or maybe a year) but she immediately wants to protect him. She sees him as her son and will not hear any more of that (there’s a sickfic I want to write where she takes care of him while he’s sick when he was younger and he calls her mom in a haze and it’s that moment she realizes she wants to protect and help make his future brighter). So when the plot actually starts, they’ve known each other for years. At this point, her loadout is Biting Edge/Sniper gun/Shield.

So when eventually she meets the rest of the AGEs she seems them has her children (though none of them realize how old she is, so everyone except for Phym sees her as a big sis;). When Ein appears, they have to pretend they don’t know each other for the sake of the charade (tho Ein has Ami’s wedding ring on him for some reason HMM?), eventually it does come to light that Ami is a veteran God Eater (I wanna say when Phym leaves for Odin). This is probably gonna change as more info about the actual timeline between GE2RB to GE3 maybe gets revealed.

He realised then, that there were friends to make, and that was what Kate would have wanted. For him to move on, and make more friends, so that he would be able to look forward and finally let go of the sin he carried. Because it wasn’t a sin, Kate herself asked for the death he brought her.

He looked into the eyes of his partner, and smiled, and the strength they lent him; despite not knowing him during the time of his past, they still accompanied him and wanted to exact the revenge he needed to carry out. They wanted to make sure that Gilbert was safe.

And that was when Haruomi put his arms around them.

Gilbert knew, then, that he was special, for there were friends who would always be with him.

like honestly tho god eater 1 had depressing moments but not THIS bad and like its so easy to tell they got such a bigger budget for ge2 and that makes me so happy and they released a teaser for potentially ge3 last year and theres also this mmo in the works maybe and and code vein is also coming out next year and its by the same team except its in a different world and has vampires but !!!!!!!!i want it so bad

God Eater 3 [30+ Hours Grind Review]

9 years ago, the first existence of God Eater (GE) was released and it’s the most beta PSP game ever, it was second to best in its the era in 480p resolutions. Some might say “this is a monster hunter copy” and they’re not wrong. The gameplay, mechanics, and effects are quite similar but a year after, GE Burst was released and everything about the game is fully enhanced.

The game become popular as more weapons become more accessible and the updates for bullet creation allowing players to create a magical effective bullet. (We create rasengan bullet back then).

Then, GE2 come into existent with the most flashy gameplay but with the most shitty story ever made. So here we are with the first release of GE3.

PRESENTATION

It’s a game that created for PS4 however, Bandai Namco with GE project team manage to port the game on PC exquisitely well. The world is very beautiful with more details and flashy moves from anything that is able to move. Adding up, they actually put a lot of efforts into the map as each map have a rotation of Day, Night, and Rain mode.

However, one thing that I really miss for GE2 is the hit marker effects indicator (showing the effective area to get critical hit for the monsters) that is removed from GE3. the monsters are definitely looking badass and cool compared to a certain game where it’s basically killing off unexistent dinosaurs as it has no supernatural powers to overwhelm its prey, it throws off the new vibe and excitement when your brain telling “Hit that boi hard until it’s broken”.

A very captivating view of the post-apocalypse world.

CHARACTER CREATION

Definitely, the game contains fewer choices compared to the previous titles, but 10/10 on the character’s voice. One of the thing that always overlook, the characters’ voice have several stages and effects to be triggered and definitely make up for the cons for the character creation menu.

But, my convictions are too strong and the available outfits are the most disappointing part of the game. Not much variety, decent designs and I do hope they gonna have more outfits in the upcoming DLC.

GAMEPLAY

At first, it felt very sloppy when I play the first 5 missions as I believed that they had adjusted the attack speed on every weapon and the shield deployment speed (it felt very slow, to be honest).

Once you get used to it, it’s fine. Movements, you can create a huge variety of combos for your weapon depending on the type of equipment you’re using and it has various abilities that can be chained with the extremely flashy move. Remember the OG move which is swapping to gun form? Yeah, still the same over the course of 9 years.

The types of equipment, they are very hard to craft and upgrade each one of them to rank 7 and +30. If I were to say, almost 80% of the time you had to go out for the mission and get the item that had a 10% chance of getting it. (Lord praise the RNG rate).

There are a lot of other interesting abilities that will make the player appreciate these little things to make the game feel more enjoyable and worth playing over the long run.

Do keep in mind that EVERY SINGLE MISSION HAVE WEAPONS TO BE UNLOCKED.

This is, in fact, one thing that I notice, AI joins your team after the queue time is over. It’s a great thought to the multiplayer mode due to the fact that not everyone willing to farm this boss. Basically saying that you won’t play this alone if the Ai be with you as camouflaged real player. Hats off.

It’s possible to one-shot those raid boss Aragami too. 

CONTENT [ NO MAJOR SPOILER ]

The main story revolved around a certain loli that exist from god knows what science technology they used to create an Aragami in humanoid form. (I personally want engineered catgirls but we had that in GE2).

The main story genres are “family-hood” and “deeply cared for each other with strictly no homo” as each character has their own unique identity that theoretically that each character should have their own story arc that gonna deeply impact the main story content such in previous titles. But it’s too good to be true as the character’s story builds up to the 3rd floor and the story quite disappointing.

If I were to put in comparison on the quality of the story throughout the series, definitely GE > GE3 > GE2. GE2 story is absolute garbage and should be put as a benchmark to any author that wants to write a satisfying storyline.

Things like this happen a lot.

My Personal Enjoyment

I have waited for this game ever since my disappointment in GE2 which leaves a huge void in my heart. After waiting for so long since 2014 and getting a sequel that can be finished with less than 25 hours is quite disappointing. Looking on the bright side, the gameplay, the optimization of the game on PC and aesthetic of the polished 3D model manage to cover some of it.

Personally, I love this game and every single aspect of this and the character voices are one of the things I fall in love with. Thus, I do hope the DLC will be even far better but my expectation wouldn’t exceed that high.
