hedwig: what artist has had the biggest influence on your music?

it's not easy to pinpoint only one - or even a few - artists that have the biggest influence on hedwig's music. hedwig has always listened to such a genuinely wide variety of artists, finding artists and works he likes in every single genre and sub-genre - or at least, something not far from literally every one. his taste is too non-specific, as is his music; he doesn't conform to the idea of genre, as much as each one of his songs fits into one or multiple existing genres, and so that makes it harder to say who has had the biggest influence on his music. perhaps it's easiest to think of on a more technical scale, though even then, it still feels impossible to pick only one. the closest thing to an answer to this question that hedwig is able to give might be that early british punk music such as sex pistols, siouxsie and the banshees, and the clash have had the greatest influence on him, as a lot of his techniques in making music - no matter how great his skills have improved over the years, and no matter how much new gear and equipment comes into his possession - are parallel to the techniques seen in this music ( though he can confidently say that he actually knows how to play instruments, unlike the - great regardless - sex pistols ). punk music's d.i.y mentality has always been how hedwig has created his music, first out of necessity, and now out of both habit and effectiveness.

for hedwig & jupiter: what was your favorite halloween costume as a kid?

hedwig blackwood never celebrated halloween as a child. their life was terrifying enough already, so it was never high up on their list of priorities to find more scares for themself, and in general they had far greater things to worry about than collecting sweets from the neighbours that they tried their hardest to conceal themself and their life from. they were able to finally join in on festivities as a teenager, however, and their favourite halloween costume from that time was the patsy cline costume they wore when they were fifteen years old. they were working a halloween event at the record store where attendees were required to dress as musicians or other iconic people in the music industry, and their co-worker happened to have the perfect patsy cline inspired dress for them to borrow for the occasion. hedwig has never received more compliments than they did that night, and it also happened to be one of the first nights that they felt like a real human.

jupiter bernstein attended the same halloween event almost every year from birth to early adulthood. the university his parents worked at held a surprisingly great halloween function, and his parents were especially fond of attending an event with likeminded people who would actually appreciate their themed costumes. each year from infancy, jupiter's parents would dress him up in some astrological themed costume, but jupiter's favourite will always be the costume he wore when he was only four years old, the year his parents dressed him up as the planet jupiter. there was just something so special about everyone addressing him by name, even if he had never met them before, and there was no better feeling that being celebrating by everyone for being jupiter. at four years old, jupiter didn't understand that they simply liked the costume of the planet, believing that they were all just fond of him. even after he grew to understand what really happened, it was a magical night that he'll forever look back on with a smile.
