thanks a lot to s/hetty, MASTER mother manipulator, they never really had a chance. despite her most valiant effort not to, cate did fall for luke which did not go unnoticed by indira. & once she did, the little tests began now keeping a rather tight leash on cate & making sure she remembered where her loyalties lied. needless to say, the beginning of their relationship was giving a good amount of this :

with luke having to put in work to peel at the many layers of her. there were a lot of times she caught glimpses of his level of awareness. he knew half of her was locked away, the depth of the secrets she had, & he loved & trusted her anyway. this, of course, always made it harder when she had to lie or use her persuasion on him, but it also pulled her further into his orbit, weakening her ties to s/hetty. without luke, cate wouldn't have had the strength or clarity of mind to see the truth about indira & not fall victim to her manipulations in ep 7.

but u also need to know on a serious note— in a what if scenario where caleb never disappeared & cate had never been shut off from the world by her parents, what do you envision her life looking like? would she be more “open” to use her powers, would she have attended godolkin on her own accord or done something completely different? 👀

OOOOh good question & no one come for me actually because i'm not much of a drinker ffbrehvbs. if it's during the day i feel like she's a spritz kind of girlie, something light & refreshing, a little fruity. ( for a night out she will 100% start with shots just to get things going ) once she is ready for something to just sip on i could see her gravitating towards a classic vodka sprite / soda, claiming it gets her the least hungover !

[ 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚒𝚏 ? ] well, it's hard to say without knowing more about her parents but i do think their initial reaction to cate's powers would be completely different had that first incident not occurred. i think she would have been 'presented' to v/ought by her parents eventually. showing off what the compound v had given her. cate would likely be naive at first, thrilled by the constant approval & encouragement of her parents. i think she would have attended g/od u of her own volition & would apply for the school of crimefighting specifically. without the suppression of the medication given to her by i.ndira, she wouldn't have so many health related issues when it came to using her powers. within the first few years of attending is when she would begin to become jaded by the whole 'hero' idea & the system at large. realizing it was all about appearances & the unfortunate reality of just how many kids injected with the serum grew up to be complete pieces of shit that didn't deserve it :) ░ FROM ♡

is she could pick to have a different power would she?

given the option, cate would choose not to have powers at all. they've only ever given her grief, tore her family apart, & turned her into a monster. cate looked up to heroes & wanted to emulate them due to her circumstances, but in her heart of hearts, she wants a normal life. now if she could choose another set of powers : just for the fun of it, i 100% think she would & that she'd want to be almost a carbon copy of queen m.aeve. just like classic superhero strength, agility, near - invulnerability. cate feels her powers have allowed her the capacity to train & build the strength of her mind, well beyond her years. but due to the endless mental & emotional damage brought on by using her abilities, she would much prefer the straight - forward brutality of fighting with her fists!

will she ever forgive herself for what she did to caleb?

REALLY COMING FOR MY THROAT LIKE THAT ?!! ahhhh, the short answer is definitely no /: but let's get into it the why. ░ FROM [ ... ]

for (01) cate has her own beliefs around the "intention" aspect of her abilities. she's convinced that her control is weaker & much more easily broken when the intention behind the words isn't strong enough. within this context, cate's really built up the vehemence & tension with her brother in those last moments. her guilty conscience has distorted that average childhood sibling fight into a true act of malice on her end. a lot of her early memories are like that, framed through the view of her own [perceived] monstrousness.

then (02) there's the way these beliefs are so heavily reinforced by her parents. due to her isolation & their fore-warnings of 'the dangers posed' to anyone she is allowed to meet, cate is rarely given the chance to prove herself as anything more than that. while cate eventually accepts that her parents are primarily at fault for this & blamed her without cause when they were the ones who had her dosed to begin with, she can't fully shake the guilt.

finally (03) : is the inability to escape the woods & her part in it. almost like constantly being surrounded by kids just like caleb. lost in the woods after someone took away their choices, their free will. sometimes she herself who would touch their skin, lead them down into the depths. while she never let herself consciously think of it this way, she often felt doomed or trapped in a sort of purgatory : repeating the same incident with her brother over & over again. the ending always the same. she's never the hero of that story.
