the city was constantly changing, shifting into a new form overnight—you could recognize it from its familiars, but it was the new stuff that really piqued your curiosities and kept you grounded. people need that sort of thing to make life interesting. they need something to cling to so they can escape the mundane. the thing about religion is that to someone who doesn’t believe in what they can’t see—it all feels like a cult. however, newly formed religions tend to be the subject on everyone’s mouths, especially in the case of a missing person.
a soon as the client left jessica huffed a sigh. missing person’s cases ended up on her desk more often than not. usually there was a new boyfriend or girlfriend involved, a loan shark or simply just a runaway. but this was the first time a religious group had been given the finger. of course the client had no proof, and so it was jessica’s job to gather evidence against this group.
first, she looked on from the distance, staking the place out and researching the leader of this said ‘cult’. looked like every other praise and worship group from afar, but maybe there was something more off putting in the sermons. jessica had went in on a few of them, and it was as she suspected. a load of bullshit. though there was something about the ‘father’ of this group that was charismatic and intense. but she figured all religious leaders had that thing about them. nothing left to do now other than ask around.
at the end of one of the sermon jessica stuck around until the crowd started to clear, she rose slow with intent and approached the man himself, joseph seed, she played the part of a intrigued stranger, ❛ that was an impressive sermon, father. ❜

good. he’s observant, just like she thought he would be. she had made the effort to appear multiple times prior to speaking with him. she wanted him to see her, get used to her appearances, so when she finally approached him he wouldn’t be suspicious of her questions. she needed to gain his trust, but first she needed to appear like everyone else. lost, broken and open for something to change that. she tried to appear in awe and match everyone else, but she never spoke to anyone else. she also purposely looked around the room as if she were looking for someone she knew. she needed to know why her client’s son, andrew brooks had last been seen among these people. for now she kept his name to herself. the name she needed had to be her own, albeit temporarily. ❛ victoria, but most people call me vicki or tori. ❜ she gave a shy smile.
if the ‘father’ had been guilty of anything it would have been an intense staring problem. jessica kept her smile on her face, ❛ i wasn’t sure this place was for me. ❜ she gave a vague shrug while looking around the area, seemingly in awe, but she was examining it more clearly, ❛ i hope i don’t offend, but… i’m still kinda unsure about alotta things. ❜ jessica needed to play the part of a lost women seeking something more than herself, something like salvation or acceptance within a community of people—all things jessica hated really. ❛ i had been trying to muster up the courage to talk to you if i’m honest. ❜ she averted her gaze from him. damn his eyes were intense and almost unsettling—does he ever blink?
𝐓𝚮𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐎𝐌 𝐖𝚨𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄, 𝚨𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝚮𝐄 𝐅𝚨𝐓𝚮𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐃, 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐂𝚮𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝚮𝚨𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝚮𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐖𝚮𝐎 𝐂𝚨𝐌𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝚮𝐈𝐌 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝚮𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐃𝐄𝐏𝚨𝐑𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐒. he smiled and nodded as they expressed their feeling of belonging, their feelings of solitude washing away. how within the project they have found a family they have never had before. it warmed him. he bid them farewell, for now and hoped to see them again soon.
he had not been blind to the new faces that appeared there were 5, to be exact, two who looked skeptical and left as soon as the sermon ended. he knew their end would come for them if they could not open their hearts to his words. it was saddening. two others seemed hopeful. and then there was her: he did not know her name yet, but she had been appearing in many of his sermons, observing.
as the woman approached him he let himself smile at her. ❛ your kind words are appreciated, my child. i have seen you here a few times before, but i never got your name, or the chance to speak with you. ❜ he notes. ❛ i am pleased you have chosen to speak to me, and given me that chance now. all are welcome here in our project. tell me… what is your name? ❜
