Sadyrra Abbasi comes from a line of wolf-shifters, they are not werewolves in a traditional sense. Her kin came from a complex line of she-wolves who nurtured and raised heroes and founders of civilizations. Throughout time, wolves had dichotomous and conflicting narratives surrounding them. Many iterations of ancient lore depict the wolf as an evil, malevolent creature and yet at the same time, they were depicted as incredibly nurturing. This creates some sort of tension in the relationship between humans and the natural world, as throughout history there are numerous stories that highlight the conflict between human and nature.

The role and symbolism is varied and forever evolving and changing, and Sadyrra and her ancestors had to deal with this love-hate relationship that humans had with them for centuries. Particularly, with Sadyrra’s lineage, hers is traced all the way back to the she-wolf that raised and protected the prophet and founder of Zoroastrianism, Zoroaster, or Zarathustra. It is said that the devs ( gods ) brought Zoroaster to a she-wolf, expecting her to kill the child but instead raised him as though he were one of her pups. And strangely enough, according to the Avesta, the sacred text of the Zoroastrians, wolves are a creation from the “darkness” of the evil spirit, Ahriman, and are ranked among the most cruel of animals. Their reputation of nobility and ferocity often contend and grapple each other, leaving a very confusing legacy in their wake. And thus, we know throughout history wolves have been incredibly maligned due to their very nature of being apex predators. 

Furthermore, Sadyrra’s ancestral history is constantly being tested by old Iranian folklore stories that depicted wolf-shifters as bloodthirsty creatures who preyed on the vulnerable. Many of the wolf-shifters in these stories were women ( which subconsciously obviously reflects the fear of emasculation and the monstrous feminine that is somewhat felt during the time period ), and thus the wolf shifting ability is mostly passed through and inherited by all the women in Sadyrra’s family. There are men in the family who have the shifting ability through sheer luck alone ( that being her older brother ), but for the most part it’s always the women who have this ability. 

In terms of Sadyrra’s shifting ability, it comes easily at night. The moon has no role in it and her family kept developing and evolving the ability to allow themselves to transform at will. However, it seems that nighttime really serves as a catalyst in making for a smoother transformation. Thus, the term werewolf isn’t appropriate due to technicalities and cultural sensibilities, and so Sadyrra and her family refer to themselves as vǝhrká ( vuhr-KAH ), the Avestan / Old Persian word for “wolf.” But in contemporary times, in Farsi ( the current language spoken by Iranians ), werewolves are called gorgine ( gor-GEE-neh ), but Sadyrra and her family aren’t too fond of it. 

Furthermore, her form is more based on the leaner and thin-coated forms of Iranian wolves, which are tawny and brown in colour. Because she is a shifter, her wolf form is well distinguished given her abnormally larger size than actual Iranian wolves. It’s said the oldest shifters in her family grew larger as time went on and the largest wolf in her family is her maternal grandmother. She is gifted with all the abilities of a wolf in this form, which is a given. While in human base form, she does have augmented strength, speed, and senses.
