I think Dana explained the betas though, it was the characters in a much different, heavier and darker story, that probably would have leaned more into the idea of witches and… well hell. Since Hieronymus Bosch drew lots of purgatory images. But you cant really do that for Disney. Plus to be fair, you’re meant to be able to throw ideas at a wall (even if they are very unlikely to work) for concept art and then be willing to immediately dump stuff and try new ideas without getting attached.
Side note, while the big selling point for the Betas is that they are edgy or can be used to explore darker subjects, people sometimes just make them borderline evil, or just… actual evil, did you know its very easy to find beta fics tagged with non con and/or underage? Yea. They make Willow actively hateful and sadistic or make the Lumity ship a copy paste of Catradora, aka have them beat the life out of each other but then say uwu owo its not toxic, they love each other.
(seriously i cannot take ship discourse in fandoms seriously, they'll say one ship is toxic or problematic and turn around and ship the same thing but worse.)
For the first point... You're absolutely right. I should not judge for someone exploring different possibilities in concept art because I have no idea when in production that art was made or what the idea for the show was at the time. A LOT of things go through a half a dozen rewrites before the public ever sees them. Frozen apparently came down to the wire for its final plot and it's a miracle we got what we did at all. And even then, I think that movie is still a bit of a mess at times.
Also, fun fact, I have considered an Owl House AU where Luz went to hell instead. In that, Eda would be a demon looking for redemption and her only real ally, but also the only one trying to be real with her so Luz keeps thinking the demons who want to manipulate her are the ones to trust. Amity would have also been an angel undercover and supposed to be giving reports to god about the comatose child who's soul went to hell for some reason when the worst she deserves is Limbo. I could do a concept pitch blog for it but *shrug*
So I think it's personally wrong to conflate canon material with fan material and what is being criticized. Fanworks and the like are one of the safest places to explore different topics or express pain and the like you've had. It also only commonly has one or two eyes on it to say something might be toxic while media on tv usually has a few dozen and the fact that no one catches the red flags is... questionable. Especially why those red flags exist.
(As a note: I can't weigh in on if Catradora is toxic or not because I have watched only one episode of that show. Not even the first. I really ought to though since it seems up my alley.)
WITH THAT SAID, fanfiction authors aren't exactly going to always be respectful about such topics and the like and it took the majority of a year for anyone to tell me people used the Betas for more than murderous, drug addicted psycopaths. Even those people praised a story for having the two get into random fist fights with strangers in a Denny's parking lot so... Yeah. I'm not going to say the characterization of the Betas in the fandom is the best, or their use for that matter.
With all that said, I feel like the nicer Amity has become, and the more the two have come closer and closer to their Beta designs, the less I see of the Betas. Even now, I see lot less blood smears and sadistic grins and a lot more "It's just a normal Lumity picture except a different design." These aren't criticisms really but more just me ruminating on the fact that I think the fandom lost a lot of people who liked the edgier possibilities because of how poorly the show handled its own edge.
As for me as a content creator, have I ever considered using the Betas? I mean, I have for a one off or two, notably a one off where Luz is a dragon and Amity the willing sacrifice to her, but a one off can be hard to capture anything really interesting about them. I'd say I've only had one idea where I maybe wanted to use the Betas and that idea is a Noir Mystery? (It's complicated) story where Amity is a brothel owner in part to make her mom mad, Boscha is both bouncer and stripper for said brothel and dating Amity and Luz is a detective but not super gritty or the like. More Columbo (from what I hear, haven't seen it myself) than normal pulpy fiction Noir types. Also her detective style would lean a lot more into reading people and connections than forensics.
Another story I could do a concept pitch blog for since god only knows when or if I'll ever get to it. That idea is WAY more fleshed out than the going to hell one though.
But yeah, the betas are fine in my opinion to exist and mostly fine in how the fandom uses them because... I mean, if you don't like what they're being used for, just don't consume it. It's not necessary AT ALL to be a part of the fandom and I think a lot of fandoms really need to learn to chill about content creators creating content they don't like.
I don't think people realize the sorts of spaces they're creating within their own fandom because of that or the damage to their show's popularity either. It's a complicated topic and one I've had to give a lot of thought as, well... Ex-erotica writer, remember? And I've still done one erotic story for TOH too, even if it's aged up.

So I mapped out a fanfic idea and I was wondering if I was to write it into a story would any of y'all read it?
basically it's an Band/Human AU with the betas
Here what I'm thinking-
Luz is a solo artist Faceless DJ who lives in the small city of bonesbourgh and works/lives at Eda's cafe/nightclub The Owl House and one day Luz gets approached by one of the biggest girl band in the city The Banshees and is offered a chance to feature on their newest EP but what happens when the Fans respond to the Faceless DJ or will her Music career end there?
Little Extra Info-
It's going to be a Luz Centric fiction with the occasional switch when relevant
They are all 16-18 (Gus is 16 Everyone else is 18)
It's going to be posted on Ao3
Its the beta designs
It is inspired by 2 fics (music in the moonlight, and An act of love both 10/10 fics)
There will be a bunch of ships I dont really know what yet (Lumity for sure)
It will be rated teen cuz There is drinking, smoking and swearing and like the smallest amount of smut (like the most there will be referenced or an Innuendo)
That's all I can think of atm but If that is something y'all would be intrested in please let me know so I can start chapter 1
Edit 2: so with some help I made a Ao3 account and I will begin writing the first chapter for this fic and I'm hoping to get the first chapter out in like 2 weeks
But ADHD and school are not being cooperative

My Stories Ranked from Worst to Best (According to you guys).
Oh my gosh, it's been a whole year since I have been writing The Owl House fan fiction! ... Oh my gosh, it's been a whole year since I've been writing The Owl House fan fiction...what I am I doing with my life. But regardless, it still has been a year. And within that time, I wrote ten different stories, each with its own varying degrees of success. So today, in celebration(?), I have ordered all that I have written from worst to best. Or, more accurately, you guys have ranked them. Because this list is based on the amount of kudos each story got, and take a shot at why some might be more popular than others. I'll also leave links to each one so you can form your own opinion. With that out of the way, here's the list:
10th place-The Nurse House (181 kudos): This is a story based off of someone else's AU where instead of Luz being a human trapped in the Boiling Isles, she's a witch trapped in the human world. And, instead of Eda being Luz's caretaker, it's Camila. I haven't continued this story since August. And because of that, it hasn't gotten as much attention recently. I do have plans to continue The Nurse House. But it's gonna have to wait until I finish my other projects. As for why it's not doing so good, it's probably either my writing ability or the fact that this fandom rejects anything that doesn't have Lumity in it (which is dumb, I know). Whatever it is, I'll find out when I eventually do work on this story again.
9th place-Baby Talk (187 kudos): This is my most recent story and is also the first one where I had others beta read it. I wanted the conclusion between Luz and Amity about having a kid to feel genuine. And how while neither is in the wrong, they're both not in the right either. But, I guess I didn't do as good of a job as I had hoped.
8th place-The Truth Comes Out (190 kudos): This story might have a similar problem with The Nurse House. It's a story about Luz coming out to her mom, and as far as I can tell, there's not much that's wrong with it. Again, maybe because there's no Lumity, or it's because of my writing ability. I don't know, and I doubt I ever will.
7th place-Same Day, Different Perspectives (230 kudos): With how popular It All Started with a Jacket was doing, I felt weird that I gave no proper introduction to these versions of Luz and Amity. So that's what I did, and, yeah, reading back, it does seem like there's a pacing issue. Still, it has parts of what I assume people like about It All Started with a Jacket, so maybe it's not too bad to check out, right? Right?
6th place-Cupid's Army (339 kudos): I won't lie. This entire story is being written just for the sake of me writing some dumb joke I have planned in the epilogue. And it might not be as worth it as I thought it was. Still, I tried my hardest to write a solid story with a few jokes and interactions between characters that haven't interacted much within canon. So while that ending joke may not be worth it, this story might be.
5th place-Get This Right (Baby) (339 kudos): This story is about Luz proposing to Amity. It has a few cute moments of domestic fluff, some jokes, and the usual jitters one has when popping a question so big. But, rereading it, there is a pacing issue as I jump through different dates almost at random, and it might be a story better off if I split it into separate chapters instead of writing it all at once.
4th place-Help from the Helpless (468 kudos): This is actually the story I'm most proud of. I wrote it for Luz Appreciation Week, and I really wanted to dive into what makes Luz such an incredible character. By exploring her seven most crucial relationships, I wanted to prove that Luz is the light of everyone's life while also giving a perspective into why acts so nice to begin with. It may not be perfect, but while it takes fourth place for everyone else, it's always going to be number one in my heart.
3rd place-Texts to Home (751 kudos): Here it is. The very first story I wrote for this fandom. Even before tons of people joined and continuously obsessed over Lumity, I felt weird that there weren't many stories focusing on Luz and her mother, which is a shame. Because to me, their relationship is really interesting. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and dived deep into Luz and Camila's bond as mother and daughter by having Luz talk about her day at "summer camp." It's the easiest thing in the world for me to write, not because I'm basically recapping episodes, but because Luz and Camila's relationship is a lot like me and my mom's. So writing their interactions is simple as thinking about how my mom and I would talk in these specific situations. I'm proud of how it turned out, and here's hoping season two will allow me the chance to continue this story in the future...whenever the hell that will be.
2nd place-Holy Matrimony (958 kudos): For a time, this was my top-rated story. It's Luz and Amity's wedding, and it is most likely everything that comes to mind when you think of it. And trust me when I say that my ego increased by tenfold after all the sweet and wonderful comments I got from this one. It did so well that I thought that I might as well add more to this story...unfortunately, I Star Wars'd it by writing an unsuccessful prequel and somehow an even worse sequel. But, hey, at least the original is still fluffy and fun!
1st place-It All Started with a Jacket (1730 kudos): Let's be real: You all knew that this was going to be number one. It is my most successful story yet, and you've all made it pretty clear why. It has chemistry between beta Luz and Amity, it's quick and easy to read, and the snark is some of my best snark yet. And the crazy thing is, I initially didn't want to make more of it. It was meant to be a one-shot as a gift for @drabbles-of-writing, but because people asked for more, I just went, "Eh, why not." And holy s**t did I not see the popularity coming! I have no idea how I still keep you all interested enough to read more, but no matter what, I'm glad that you all take the time to read each chapter. Here's hoping I don't do anything to screw it up in the future.
And that's my list. Would you rank things a little differently? Well, give them each a read (if you want) to see for yourself how you rank them. Thank you all so much for reading and loving my work, and I'll see you next time for whatever I write next.

Thoughts of Luz for character ask? Or maybe Belos's character ask?
First impression: She seems cute, I like her goofy personality.
Impression now: She's been through a lot and she needs more love.
Favorite moment: Any moment where Luz is being selfless (which is more than you think) or being very mature for her age. Despite what most fans think, she's quick to see when she's made a mistake, and tries very hard to make up for it. Sense and Insensitivity is a great example of Luz's maturity, as she sees that King is being a bad partner by refusing to collaborate.
Idea for a story: Too many to count!
Unpopular opinion: I've said it before and I'll say it again. Luz. Is. Not. Dense. Oblivious ≠ stupid. She's very smart for her age and figured out four glyphs by herself, and all the shippers (some, not all) care about is how she's unaware of Amity's crush on her. And a lot of people don't like her because "she doesn't learn from her mistakes" or "she does a lot of stupid things". NEWS FLASH! Kids do stupid stuff all the time! And Luz has learned from her mistakes!
There's also not enough fics focusing on Luz's trauma. She was friendless her whole life, and she was isolated for being odd, not to mention her mom has a job as a nurse, so she was definitely home alone most of the time. There's not enough fics where Luz is uplifted by her friends and family, or where Luz is the one being comforted.
And look, I'm not gonna tell you how to portray your ship so this is still just my opinion: I'm sick of seeing the fanart where Amity is heartbroken by Luz calling her a good friend (just no) and just straight up calling Luz dense or making her look stupid. Heck, you don't even know if Amity was upset by Luz saying "that's what friends do"! (I wanna go on but that's another post)
Favorite relationship: Romantic relationship would have to be Lumity. And as you all know, I'm obsessed with her and Eda's mother-daughter dynamic. I'll admit, I like it more than Lumity.
Favorite headcanon: Luz would definitely integrate glyphs with weapons, like in Grom and that one beta art by Dana. And share it with Eda and Lilith too.
From this ask game!

Ok, so there’s this lumity fan art, and I can’t find it and it’s really good.
It’s I think aged up luz and amity or mayyyybe beta, and they’re sitting across from each other at a table in a library, and they just have such good posture~
Like really really good posture
But anyways, if any of yous think you know what pic I’m talking about, It would be sick if you could reblog this with it, or send it, or tag me, or however someone would notify me of it lol
Thank you I’m ✨desperate✨

Character asks: Luz
Hi thanks for the ask!
Favorite thing about them: Honestly, whats not to love, but if I had to pick one, I love her love of fantasy and whimsical things, and the "Flowery" language as eda calls it
Least favorite thing: I don't really have anything i dislike about her. I guess the most I can say is i dont like the fanon that shes super oblivious if that counts?
Favorite Line: "You're not coming from a place of intellectual honesty, so debating you would be pointless!"
BROtp: Willow and gus!
OTP: Lumity!
NOtp: I am absolutely disgusted there are people who ship her with eda. no. Eda is an adult and a mother figure to luz, you are gross.
Random Headcannon: I think Luz would be a fan of whatever the owl house equivalent of the Legend Of Zelda would be. I think her favorite might be skyward sword, since it has a lot of the whimsy she seems to love about the good witch azura books (also im projecting lol)
Unpopular opinion: What is the hype around the beta version of her. I dont understand why its so popular.
Song I associate with them: The impossible dream from the Man Of La Mancha soundtrack
Favorite Picture of them:
