A new (for me) term popped into my head, for describing a type of fan...

So, because I'm a fan of "The Longest Johns," I heard the English Dub version of "Bink's Brew" from the Anime One Piece.

Being someone who is always hungry for context, I looked on Wikipedia to see what One Piece was: A manga with (to date) 1,090 chapters, and an Anime with 1,071 episodes, a single, as-yet unfinished story that has been going for 25 years without a rerun or hiatus. And it's rumored that the story is about to end.

Do I intend to actually sit down and read the manga? Or watch the anime? Not at the moment.

But I've still become invested™ in how the story ends.

So I'm following along by watching fan analysis videos, discussing the themes and characters, on YouTube. I now consider myself a:

Not sitting in the theater, looking directly at the "stage" with the audience, but sitting beside the theater, watching them, instead of the "Performance."

Luffy supremacy post

Luffy is super cool, and even more than that he's such a warm character, like I look at Luffy and I feel warmth

I know why he fights and with what motive he fights, he's innocent and he's smart, His curiosity and playfulness along with his instincts and his love for food. His anger over simple things, him being okay with things asap too. Him just being there and enjoying everything and helping everyone as he can. I can't help but adore this guy.

Also ofcourse everyone on the crew. I wish I started earlier writing about one piece when I first started watching because when I look back at the episodes, I feel like there's so much I want to talk about, From Laboon to Arlong, to Zoro and Luffy, to sanji and the cooks, to Robin and the world government, Rayleigh and the fishmen arc, There's so much. But my most touching that I can think of would be Brook's past. Bink's brew. It was just.

And Ace. I cried like a baby fr. The backstory of Luffy Ace and Sabo.

Okay, back here....

I look at Luffy and I feel warmth.

I look at Luffy and I feel like everything's going to be okay.

I'm so happy Sabo is here. (Here's hoping to nobody killing my fav guys, because i'mma be real hurt if I see luffy like that again😤)

1. Loving it so far.

4. The high up marines wear their jackets with the sleeves off just like in the manga and anime and I’m here for it

One of the significant things that amazes me about One Piece is how consistently fantastic its soundtrack is & in particular how iconic so many of the series’ original tracks from the now over 20 years ago early seasons have become. And that’s without even factoring the indelible impact We Are! - Season 1’s Debut OP has had on the medium & remains a staple in the pantheon of Anime Openings.

All of them never fail to trigger emotions in me just as potent as when I heard them first years & years ago and will likely still affect me when I hear them on my deathbed.

OPLA thoughts

I decided I wanted to sit down and pour out my thoughts on Netflix’s Live Action One Piece. I’m going to start by saying this: It was a beautiful adaptation. You could feel the love from everyone involved in every single scene. 

Before we fully dive into this, I want to make a mini disclaimer that, yes, there will most likely be spoilers.

Let’s start with an easy one, the soundtrack. One of the things I love about the anime is the music and I can say the same about the live action as well. Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli knocked it straight out of the park with every track. The sound that left me when I heard Bink’s Brew in the background could only be described as a surprised squeak. And then, in episode 4, when our crew gets the Going Merry…I teared up. We Are?! In the live action?? Absolutely brilliant. But let’s talk a bit about some of the original tracks. “Chop Chop Cannon” might be my favorite. I can’t explain why, I just love the circus music. Arlong’s theme went so hard I don’t even know where to start. Belousova herself stated that “Wealth, Fame, Power” is a combination of Luffy and Roger’s themes, and that Roger’s theme is Luffy’s in reverse. If that doesn’t clue you in on how fantastic this soundtrack is, I’m not sure what will. So, if you get a chance, I highly recommend simply listening to the soundtrack. I can’t lie, that’s what I’m doing as I type this out.

Another easy bit to talk about: the cast. Everyone, from our main crew to the villains and even the side characters were perfectly cast. 

The Strawhats especially had me smiling from ear to ear. Iñaki Godoy’s performance as Luffy has a special place in my heart. He embodies the purehearted energy that Luffy is full of so well. I’ve seen little complaints here and there about certain scenes of him “refusing food” but you need to see the context of when he does and why. For example, one of those scenes happens when Zoro is hurt. Luffy wouldn’t sit there and have a feast when his friend is hurt. That’s not our captain. I could probably write a paragraph on each actor and their performance…But that would turn this into an essay and I don’t think anyone wants that. 

Initially, when the trailer first dropped, I was unsure of Arlong and the Fishmen. But after seeing the episodes, they were so well done. Arlong was just as threatening and scary as he was supposed to be. The use of prosthetics instead of CGI was a wonderful choice and only added to the beauty of the show. It gives me a lot of hope for how they could handle Chopper in the future as well.

I said this before, but I love the fact that things are different in the live action. You get to experience these characters and story beats again in a way that feels so new it’s almost like you’re seeing it for the first time again. I constantly wish I could go into One Piece blind again, and this adaptation sort of allows me to do just that. Things I thought wouldn’t make me cry again, definitely did. Two of the biggest examples being Sanji's goodbye to Zeff and the Baratie, and Nami asking for help. 

There are also SO many Easter Eggs for fans to find. I won’t point them all out, that would turn this into a longer thing than necessary, but it adds so much to the series. Things as small as known characters wanted posters to things as obvious as Nami reading the story of Nolan to Zoro.

Now, this isn’t to say that this adaptation is without faults. Nothing is perfect. One of the bigger complaints I’ve seen and have to agree with, is that Usopp and Sanji should have been more present in their respective arcs. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we get a season 2 and we get to flesh out their characters more. It’s what they/we deserve. I don’t fully get why we introduced Garp so early either, or kept Koby and Helmeppo around for so long. I don’t think it was a bad choice per se, just an odd one. It does have me wondering about the next meeting, if the live action gets there that is. Hopefully it does, the War arc would be fantastic in the live action.

It has been an absolute joy to see people who have never given One Piece a chance before, watch it now. Oda created something special and it’s amazing to see new fans of all ages come out of this adaptation. These new fans are in for a wild ride, especially if we get more. With Loguetown and Alabasta set up as our next arcs, the future of this series is looking bright. If they thought the reception of these 8 episodes was great, just wait until they introduce us to Chopper and Robin. Crocodile remains one of my favorite One Piece villains and seeing him in live action would be a dream come true.

Disclaimer: These characters belong to Eiichiro Oda, and the Funimation English Dub series. Also, I just wanted it to be known that I watch the show in the English dub, so those are the voices I imagine for the characters. No monetary gain is being made from this drabble. Set after Episode 377, which is titled “The Pain of My Crewmates Is My Pain! Zoro's Desperate Fight!” because that episode gave me some major big feelings. More in the Author’s Note at the end.

           Brook the famed Humming Swordsman and musician slowly approaches Nico Robin, the woman the World Government has dubbed the “Demon Child” with a look of grave concern and confusion on what remains of his face. After all, he is a skeleton and must show his expression using only bones, yo-ho-ho!

“Nico Robin, may I speak to you?” Brook inquires as he comes to Robin’s side where she is helping Chopper bandage Zoro’s multitude of new injuries.

“But of course you may, Brook,” Robin smiles, standing up and drying her hands on the rag next to her. “Doctor, I will return to help momentarily,” she directs to Chopper, watching as the blue-nosed reindeer methodically cleans and dresses Zoro’s wounds.

“Take your time, Robin! You’ve been a big help already!” Chopper calls, wiping his brow before returning to the task before him.

Brook follows Robin to one of the corners away from the hustle and bustle of the giant feast going on around them.

           “What would you like to speak about, Brook?” Robin sweetly inquires, sitting on the ledge with a small cup of sake in her hands.

It takes the skeleton some time to begin speaking, but Robin never once interrupts the silence, looks bored with the conversation, or lets Brook believe his desire to talk is needless. Her gentle and almost motherly demeanor is one reason why all of the Strawhat crew comes to Robin to talk about anything and everything they need to.

“I saw what the swordsman and the cook tried to do to protect Strawhat Luffy,” Brook eventually admits, a sheepish tone in his voice.

“Ah,” Robin breathes, taking another sip of her sake. “We mustn’t let them know. Their pride would surely suffer, as they did not want these sacrifices to be public information,” she continues, a hint of warning in her voice.

“So, you saw them fight, too?” Brook inquires, sitting down next to Robin as they continue to speak in private.

“No, I was as unconscious as the others,” Robin admits with a smile. “Let’s just say I have my ways,” she winks, holding up one of her magically crafted ears she had used to spy.

“Ah, your Devil Fruit powers, but of course!” Brook nearly shouts, catching on rather quickly. “But why if the two of them fight like… Oh, what is the saying?” Brook trails off, trying to think of the proper expression. “If the two of them fight like cats and dogs, why did they fight so hard to keep one another from sacrificing themselves to Kuma?” the skeleton musician inquires, still attempting to understand the intricacies of the Strawhat crew.

“Because Sanji and Zoro are brothers,” Robin states matter-of-factly, looking over at the blonde cook as he brings Chopper and Nami more pieces of strawberry cake.

The raven-haired archaeologist does not miss the concerned look that passes over Sanji’s face when he looks at the “moss head” swordsman lying supine on the makeshift bed.

           “Not actual brothers, you understand, but the Strawhat crew are very much a family, one I’m grateful to now be a part of,” Robin smiles, casting her gaze over to where Nami is chasing after Luffy and Usopp as the two men drunkenly continue to sing Bink’s Brew despite the skeleton finishing his performance hours ago.

“Ah, so that explains why they both couldn’t let the other sacrifice himself. I see. Or I would, if I had any eyes! Yo-ho-ho!” Brook laughs hysterically.

“Shut up already, you stupid skeleton! I’ll clobber you!” Franky shouts from across the room.

“Yes, but that was also pride and duty, you see. The pride made Sanji think he needed to be the one to sacrifice himself as well as why I heard them say that Zoro told him that wasn’t a cook’s job to die in battle,” she continues to explain, blue eyes reflexively scanning the room to ensure all her crewmates are still safely out of harm’s way. “As for duty, with Luffy being our captain and Zoro our first mate, Zoro’s duty was to take over as Captain since Luffy was incapacitated. Thus, per his duty as first mate and acting Captain, Zoro could not allow anyone else to stand-in for Luffy’s head. It had to be our former pirate hunter.”

“Even as a former pirate, I did not know all of this. Captain Yorki never ran his crew that way. I see why everyone is confident that Monkey D. Luffy and his crew have the power to rule the seas,” Brook admits, pure amazement in his voice.

           “Brook,” Robin calls as the skeleton prepares to head back to the piano at the request of Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper. “Let us keep this conversation to ourselves. We don’t want to hurt the pride of our swordsman and cook, do we?” she innocently smiles while she stands to go and obtain another cup of sake.

“I wouldn’t dream of talking behind their backs nor yours, Robin,” Brook admits, smiling widely at the archaeologist. “I know how fragile a man’s ego can be! Thank you for talking with me today.”

“Likewise, Brook. Any time you wish to talk, know that I am here.”

With that, the two part ways to enjoy the rest of the celebration on Thriller Bark, the laughter and shouts of the crew raging behind them and into the night.

Author’s Note: This episode gave me a multitude of feelings and my husband and I had such a major conversation similar to this one about the sacrifice Zoro was willing to make. My husband grew up watching One Piece because I was not born when it first aired, but I have always been fascinated with pirates growing up. Thus, I interpreted the situation much differently than he did, as I knew that as first mate it is Zoro’s job to lead and protect the crew when Luffy is unable to act as Captain. My husband believes that Zoro and Sanji fought over who could sacrifice themselves over pride and wanting to save the crew, but I also added to his point that there was a bit of crew dynamics that needed to be taken into account as well. In the nearly three and a half years my husband and I have been together, we have watched One Piece together and it has become extremely near and dear to my heart and I am excited that I get to share that experience of watching it for the first time with him! (We just had our wedding on March 11th, 2023 for reference.) Anyway, Zoro is absolutely my favorite Straw Hat and until Brook showed up during the Thriller Bark arc, my husband told me that Sanji was his favorite Straw Hat Pirate as he didn’t want to spoil the addition of Brook to the crew for me.

Thus, since both Brook and Robin witnessed some form of the battle and the big reveal, this story was born. I hope you all enjoyed reading. Tumblr being weird about drafts so I'm just gonna post this unfinished scene of BG3Isekai Fanfiction that also involves time travel.

"Come… save me."

Kai blinked awake, the light that had consumed him reminded him so much of the thing that brought him to Faerun in the first place.

But he definitely was still in Baldur's Gate, but now it was nighttime and he was at the door of the illustrious mansion that Astarion had specifically warned to stay away from. As this was Cazador's mansion and if not prepared Kai would certainly not ever come out again.

But the door opened and greeting Kai was… Kai?

It was someone who shared his face, but there was quite a bit of difference and distinction between the two of them.

The Kai inside the manor was wearing a full outfit of Baldurian fashion, not a single scrap of Kai's homeworld remained in their attire. They stared down at Kai with hard red eyes. A vampire.

Kai readied himself for a tactical retreat when the vampire version of Kai began to speak.

"We have been expecting you. I'm sure you're very confused and have many questions."

"Who are you? Why do you look like me?" Kai asked

"I am you. I know that's a lot to take in, but I will answer all your questions inside. You will not be harmed." The other version of Kai did not move from their spot.

Kai immediately had dozens of questions, but before he could indulge in any of them he crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes.

"Prove it. That you're me I mean. Play something that only we would know."

The other version of Kai looked away in thoughtful mannerisms Kai could at least recognize in himself, but it wasn't enough to prove what they were saying was true. Until he opened his mouth to sing.

"Gather up all of the crew!

It's time to ship out Binks' Brew!

The wind it blows, to where who knows?

The waves will be our guide!

O'er across the ocean's tide, rays of sunshine far and wide!

The birds, they sing, of cheerful things in circles passing by!"

Kai smiled wide and joined into the second verse.

"Bid farewell to weaver's town!

Say so long to port renowned!

Sing a song, it won't be long before we're casting off!

Cross the gold and silver waves, Changin' into water sprays!

Sailing out on our journey to the ends of the sea!"

The other Kai smiled similarly as they gripped each others arms and danced as they sang "Yo-hohos" together.

"Really? That's what you're going off of? Cuz if I know full vampires, and I do, it could have been a code phrase or something to signal to the others that he's just delivering a new drink for the family."

"Nah."

Kai's attention was deep in a weapons chest, fishing around for something in particular.

"What do you mean 'nah???'" Astarion's patience was wearing thin. "That tells me nothing!"

"It has to do with the story of One Piece. Do you ever wonder why I barely talk about it?" Kai grabbing several lightning arrows and setting them to his side, "It's cuz it's so fucking long that I figured I wouldn't have enough time to share the entire thing with any of you… At least it wouldn't be the first manga I showed you."

"Are you losing the point, dear?"

"The point is," Kai says as he straps a specialized crossbow to his back. "Is that in over 1000 chapters, every single one of those stories involves taking down some great tyrant in power. And I believe in him."
