       wanda didn’t used to know how to punch. pietro had always been the bad kid, the boy who got into scraps with people who insulted them, who teased wanda and pulled at her skirts, who spit on them and called them žydas, despised the fact that they had to lie about who they were just to be safe. it had always been pietro and wanda against the world, but now it was one versus the other, and wanda wasn’t throwing her punches.         “שוועסטער! עס איז מיר. ביטע!” the next hit landed square on his nose,  bones crunching beneath wanda’s fist before he was lifted into the air by her other hand, slammed into the wall. tears burned at the edges of pietro’s eyes, blood pooling in the back of his mouth, iron lingering on the tip of his tongue. “איך וויל נישט קעמפן מיט דיר.”

                                        The History of Sokovia & the Maximoffs

for purpose of this headcanon, sokovia, which is a fictional country in the marvel universe, has found its real life parallel in lithuania. read with caution, as this contains the holocaust and genocide as a subject matter. to be used by myself & @griefmartyred.

in june 1941, sokovia was occupied by nazi germany as they attempted to invade russia. more than 100,000 jews from novi grad, the capital of sokovia, were forced to dig their own graves in the ponar forest and were mass murdered by machine gun. the remaining 20,000 jews were crowded into two ghettos which was thinned through executions until the last ghetto was emptied in september of 1943 and its occupants were deported or shot.  vanda and roze eisenhardt fled into the woods after escaping the ghettos to become a part of the partisans, a group of sokovian resistance fighters. the partisans led a semi-successful revolt against the einsatzgruppen that controlled the novi grad ghettos, though, ultimately, did not have the resources to stop the liquidation of the ghettos when more nazi forces entered and deported, or killed the rest of the jews residing within them. vanda, roze, and handful of other partisans, as well as ghetto occupants, managed to flee into the woods before they could be captured.  tomas and karolina maximoff were not as fortunate. when sokovia was occupied, they were sent to the kauen concentration camp, near to the kovno ghetto because they were romani. they just barely survived to see its liberation on august 1st, 1944.  both couples managed to survive the absolute devastation to eastern european jewry and romani and returned to sokovia, though they hid their heritage from the general population due to sustained levels of hatred and pretend they were displaced solely due to the occupation. they remained devotedly faithful in private, and their children, who wed, iryna and oleg, had a traditional jewish wedding. this faith was passed onto pietro and wanda, though they were taught to hide it as alt-right sentiments reared its ugly head once again.   pietro and wanda maximoff are ethnically and religiously jewish (and romani) but out of fear, learn how to hide as their parents did.
