Deadpool and Wolverine

There will be some spoilers below the cut.  I won’t be going into any great detail about the cameo’s (although I will go into some general spoilers here and there is one character I will end up spoiling in the last paragraph); but I will be going into detail about where Deadpool stands in the MCU and that will have some spoilers for the plot.

Saw this a couple of nights ago and thank God it lives up to the hype.  I mean, from the beginning to the end; it hits ever beat it needs to.  Now, would I have had more criticism for parts of the plot if this had been any other Marvel movie? Yes.  But the Deadpool movies have always acknowledged how screwed up the X-Men timeline is, and how Deadpool is kind of shoehorned in, and it’s no different in this movie except that it also (somewhat) involves the MCU now.  And, yes, they also take a few cracks at the issues facing the MCU.

Also, Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova CANNOT be a one-time villain.  Establish the new X-Men team in their first movie; make Cassandra the villain in the second.  I need Charles vs. Cassandra. 

Of course, the biggest question on everybody’s mind going into the film is if Deadpool is going to join the MCU?  The answer is mostly no, but partly yes.  Most of this film isn’t even set in 616 or 10005, which is Deadpool’s universe.  But at the end of the movie, Deadpool is still in 10005.  And it seems like, if they so choose to continue with making Deadpool movies, they would be set in 10005. 

This film, for the most part, isn’t about the MCU at all (emphasis on the most part).  Like Spiderman’s No Way Home, this is more a celebration of what came before.  At Fox, they created a ton of X-Men movies…and several other movies highlighting Marvel characters.  So, yes, there are characters from the X-Men franchise that pop up here; there are also characters from other Fox made Marvel movies that also appear.  And, just like No Way Home, it was fun to see these characters one last time. 

Now, that being said…

Let’s talk about how the TVA and 616 do fit into this story.  So, this is a little complicated because all of this is kind of spelled out with a few not-so-subtle hints and reading between the lines as the events take place.  So, the TVA no longer is pruning timelines (as we know); but it’s clear that any timeline, bar the Sacred Timeline, they aren’t going to actively save if something causes it to unravel.  Which is what’s happening to Deadpool’s timeline.  The complication is that, this Deadpool apparently is going to be important to a future event that happens in the Sacred Timeline.  So, a rouge TVA agent decides to pull Deadpool out of his timeline in order to stick him in 616.  (I should note that I’m simplifying this a bit.  Pulling Deadpool out also has to do with the plan the rouge agent has for Deadpool’s universe as well, but I don’t want to get into all of that).

So, basically, the MCU is somewhat continuing the multiverse storyline here.  It’s letting us know how the TVA functions now.  It’s letting us know that, while Deadpool’s universe won’t be merging with the MCU; he will play a part in the universe at some point (probably Avengers 5 and 6).  That it will probably be the TVA who will bring him (and probably other characters as well) to the MCU during the big event.  So, Deadpool is confirmed to be MCU adjacent and will interact with the 616 characters as some point.

What about Wolverine?  Um, it’s less clear.  They make jokes about keeping Jackman in the role until he’s 90; but beyond that…basically, the end of the movie sets it up to where Wolverine and one other fan favorite could easily come to the 616 universe; but they don’t actively say that they are a part of whatever happens in the future. In other words, if Jackman or the other actor I won't mention want to return, they can.   

Bit of an edit here given tonight's announcement, it seems like Deadpool set up more than we realized. At the very least, there was that "cameo" joke that seems to tease RDJ's return. Also, while we've known for awhile one character can look different from universe to universe, Deadpool and Wolverine showed us that it is also possible that two characters have the same face. That's right, what we thought was a simple joke was the MCU establishing cannon.

Why do you want to play this character? (Write as much or as little as you like and fangirl as much or as little as you like): My most problematic fave ever honestly. I can’t really remember how I found out about Madame Hydra, but I remember being like “Um, so why isn’t she in the MCU as caps arch nemesis?” She is such a deviation from the usual female ‘Femme Fetale’ villain. While she still uses her looks to get what she wants, like its pretty much canon that Madame Hydra just prefers to shoot first instead of seduce first. I feel like Ophelia is the flipside of the Steve Rogers coin as well. Where Steve is good and kind and stand up for the little guy, Ophelia is cruel and ruthless and would have no hesitations about killing anyone who was in her way. However, I do feel like she defiantly another pawn in Hydras game. I like to think Ophelia is very confident in her role as Madame Hydra and I even headcanon that Hydra basically give her the run of the organisation, choosing her own missions and agents to assist her. However, I also think that Hydra would have no problem dropping her or killing her should they no longer find her useful. I feel like Ophelia doesn’t want to admit that she is disposable because she has been 2337237484% brainwashed into thinking she is the be all and end all of Hydra. So I would love to play her because technically she is a villain, 10093847% out for her own good and actually likes hurting other people and I haven’t ever played someone who is so black and white with their villainy, but she is also a victim on brainwashing and abuse. However, I think it would be interesting to also explore her relationship with Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, as I headcanon that Ophelia was one of Bucky’s many abusers and she remembers him whole-heartedly and has and has a weird and needy fascination with him. Also, gimme that sweet sweet Steve/Ophelia arch-nemisis vibe.

Biography (3+ paragraphs, you can use the skeleton to help you): Madame Hydra was born Ophelia Sarkissian in Hungry at the turn of the century. She was orphaned at a very young age and lived a life of thievery of the streets of the small village she was born in. It was when Ophelia was in her early teens that she had a run in with Hydra. They took her, as well as several other Orphans, to be trained as operatives for Hydra. Ophelia was turned into a cold blooded killer through years of extensive torture, training and brainwashing. It was through determination and lack of empathy that she over took the other girls and claimed the mantle of Madame Hydra for herself. She fought Captain America when he tried to stop Hydra at the end of World War two, and became the red skulls right hand when the rest of the generals were killed. Since then, Ophelia has despised the Captain and has a personal vendetta against him.

Ophelia rose quickly through the ranks, her ruthlessness and loyalty to Hydra proved to all around her that she could and would go to any lengths to secure a victory for Hydra. Ophelia also became a handler of the Winter Soldier when he was under the control of Hydra. She was cruel and pushed the asset to his limit, often taken perverse pleasure in his torture and brainwashing. Ophelia took charge and lead Hydra to many victories during the cold war, the use of poisons and secret methods earned her another name. “The Viper.”

However, during her time with Hydra, Ophelia did the one thing she had promised never to do. She fell in love. The romance she had with the Mutant Wolverine was short lived and full of passion and it was the first time Ophelia had felt any positive emotion in so long. They married and even enjoyed a short, blissful few months as newly weds. Yet the romance didn’t last, her increasing paranoia and conflict with Wolverines loyalty to the good guys, caused Ophelia to go as far as to put a hit out on him. This drove him and her to a fight that nearly killed her and ever since that, Madame Hydra has focused most of her attention in the mutant world to finding her ex-husband. Now, she was truly alone with no one to count on but Hydra. Ophelia grew to accept that, even like it. Now, she rules as a sort of defacto Queen of Hydra, taking the title of Madame Hydra very seriously and with the new that Steve Rogers has gone rogue, Ophelia is even more intent upon finding him and her lost asset again.
