#“norna” in Quenya means “tough” (with the connotation of “obdurate” or “resistant”). basically meaning ”strong and stubborn“#“norno” is the personalized form of norna and it's applied to both dwarves and oak-trees independently#I think after the word was applied to dwarves (in-universe) “norno” meaning “oak” would more often be said as “nornalda” to avoid confusion#(“nornalda” meaning “oak-tree” or literally “stiff-tree”)#because the word for the tree almost definitely would have come before the word for dwarf#but the etymological connection is still definitely there and I think the association wouldn't be obsolete#I wish I had the motivation and confidence to write fanfic because the symbolic potential here is infinite#my post#text post#thorin oakenshield#thorin#the hobbit#tolkien dwarves#lotr dwarves#quenya
