Jeff Sessions will not bring justice to the Justice Department
(CNN)The killing of black honor student Jordan Edwards by police in Balch Springs, Texas, and the failure of the Justice Department to charge Baton Rouge police officers in the death of Alton Sterling provide further proof of a systemic problem of police violence.
Sadly, the Justice Department, now led by US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is unlikely to tackle this issue.
A top student and athlete, Edwards, 15, was shot to death when a police officer fired his rifle into a car in the Dallas suburb. The officer was later terminated.
This comes as the Justice Department has refused to charge two police officers in the July 5, 2016, convenience store shooting of Sterling. A bystander's video showed police pinning Sterling to the ground before shooting him.
The Sterling case marks the first high-profile police shooting decision made under Sessions' watch. And it appears as if Sessions' pro-police, law-and-order philosophy is already starting to influence the way decisions are made in his department.
So we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for the attorney general to press charges in the death of Edwards -- or anyone killed by the police, for that matter.
Sessions' record on race and civil rights is legendary. In 1986, during the Reagan years, then-judicial nominee Sessions was denied a seat on the federal bench due to accusations of racial animosity toward blacks. Lawyers at the Justice Department and the US Attorney's Office in Alabama had testified that Sessions called a black prosecutor a "boy" and warned him "to be careful what he said to white folks," told a white civil rights attorney he was "a disgrace to his race," and said the ACLU and the NAACP were "un-American" and "communist-inspired" organizations that "forced civil rights down the throats of people."
Coretta Scott King even wrote a letter to Congress at the time, urging members to block his nomination because of his alleged malicious and fraudulent prosecution of civil rights activists when he was a US attorney in Alabama. And though Sessions denied these allegations, his nomination did not make it out of committee -- notably in a Republican-controlled Senate.
Sessions' supporters say he has changed since those allegations were made against him in the 1980s, but many -- myself included -- are still suspect.
During the 2016 campaign, Sessions was a devoted cheerleader for then-candidate Trump's law and order, stop-and-frisk platform. Despite his controversial record, Sessions was confirmed for the position of America's top prosecutor by the Senate.
He received the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police and other law enforcement organizations, who believed he would side with the police.
And after he was confirmed, David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader, tweeted, "Thank God After 8 Horrible Years Of Black Radical Marxists We Finally Have An AG Who Will Defend Decent American People - Rather Than Thugs."
In addition, the white nationalist website Daily Stormer applauded Sessions as "An Aggressive Anti-Black Racist," predicting that "We're Going To Get Absolutely Everything We Wanted."
Sessions says he detests the Klan and white nationalism, and that all claims of racism are a distortion of the truth.
But so far Sessions has not disappointed his supporters. Although there is no evidence for it, he has attributed an increase in violent crime to a lack of respect for police officers, claiming "in recent years law enforcement as a whole has been unfairly maligned and blamed for the unacceptable deeds of a few bad actors."
Further, Sessions has made it clear that he will take a step back and review the more than 20 consent decrees governing over 20 cities in the US. Consent decrees mean that these cities have agreed to work with the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, under court supervision, to overhaul their police departments, enact certain reforms and improve relations with their respective communities.
Sessions said he believes these consent decrees lower police morale, and he opposes the federal government's role in "dictating to local police how to do their jobs -- or spending scarce federal resources to sue them in court."
But problems policing in America is not a matter of a few bad apples, as Sessions suggests, but a systemic issue in police culture and law enforcement practices. These tragic, senseless incidents, such as the killing of Jordan Edwards and Alton Sterling, are a reminder of this reality. And there are likely to be more, particularly if police feel they will not be prosecuted for using excessive or unwarranted force.
Join us on Twitter and Facebook
There is no reason to believe that Sessions will do anything to reform plagued police departments, hold them accountable to the public or seek justice for the victims of police violence. Despite his image as being pro-police, he serves neither the police nor the communities they serve when he normalizes the festering wounds of police brutality and misconduct and the longstanding mistreatment of communities of color.
When innocent, unarmed honor students are shot, we have a problem.
But the new attorney general will not solve this problem -- he will only make it worse, largely because he does not believe a problem exists.

A frustrated Trump lashes out at special counsel Mueller
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Sunday took out his frustrations over the intensifying Russia investigation by lashing out at special counsel Robert Mueller, signaling a possible shift away from a strategy of cooperating with a probe he believes is biased against him.
In a series of weekend tweets naming Mueller for the first time, Trump criticized the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and raised fresh concerns about the objectivity and political leanings of the members of Mueller’s team.
Trump also challenged the honesty of Andrew McCabe, the newly fired FBI deputy director, and James Comey, the bureau’s former director whom Trump fired last year over the Russia probe.
The president’s aggressive stance followed a call Saturday by his personal lawyer for Rod Rosenstein, whom Trump appointed as deputy attorney general and who now oversees Mueller’s inquiry, to “bring an end” to that investigation.
Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, which spent the past year conducting a parallel investigation, recently said they had drafted a report concluding no collusion or coordination between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia. Committee Democrats vehemently disagreed.
“The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “It was based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC, and improperly used in FISA COURT for surveillance of my campaign. WITCH HUNT!” Trump was referring to a dossier of anti-Trump research funded by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Likely adding to Trump’s growing frustration, The New York Times reported last week that Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organization and requested Russia-related documents. Trump had said Mueller would cross a red line with such a step.
“Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?” Trump tweeted Sunday.
Some of Mueller’s investigators indeed have contributed to Democratic political candidates, but Justice Department policy and federal service law bar discrimination in the hiring of career positions on the basis of political affiliation. Mueller is a Republican.
Trump’s attacks raised new concerns among members of Congress that he could be seeking to orchestrate Mueller’s firing. Republican and Democratic lawmakers warned Trump to not even think about it.
“If he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a Trump ally.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called for the passage of bipartisan bills designed to protect Mueller that have stalled in Congress.
“This president is engaged in desperate and reckless conduct to intimidate his law enforcement agencies of this country and to try and stop the special counsel. That is unacceptable in a democracy,” Durbin said.
Trump cannot directly fire Mueller, who can only be dismissed for cause. Any dismissal of Mueller would have to be carried out by Rosenstein, who has publicly expressed his support for Mueller.
Aides and friends say they understand Trump’s frustration with an investigation that hangs over his presidency.
“When he says it’s a political witch hunt, I think he’s right,” said Christopher Ruddy, CEO of the conservative news website Newsmax and a longtime Trump friend.
Marc Short, Trump’s congressional liaison, said the president’s frustration is “well-warranted” because “there has been no evidence whatsoever of collusion.”
Trump may have felt emboldened after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on Friday. “A great day for Democracy,” Trump tweeted afterward. Trump asserted without elaboration that McCabe, whose firing he had publicly called for, knew “all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!”
The Associated Press later reported that McCabe kept personal memos detailing interactions with Trump that have been provided to Mueller’s office and are similar to notes compiled by Comey. Trump sought to cast doubt on their veracity.
“Spent very little time with Andrew McCabe, but he never took notes when he was with me,” Trump tweeted Sunday. “I don’t believe he made memos except to help his own agenda, probably at a later date. Same with lying James Comey. Can we call them Fake Memos?”
It wouldn’t be unusual for a senior official to make notes soon after meeting with the president.
Trump also claimed Comey lied under oath at a Senate hearing by saying he had never been an anonymous source. Comey, who is releasing a book next month, tweeted Saturday after McCabe’s firing: “Mr. President, the American people will hear my story very soon. And they can judge for themselves who is honorable and who is not.”
The contents of McCabe’s memos are unknown, but they could help substantiate McCabe’s assertion that he was unfairly maligned by a White House he says had declared “war” on the FBI and Mueller’s investigation.
Sessions said he dismissed McCabe on the recommendation of FBI disciplinary officials who said McCabe had not been candid with a watchdog office investigation. An upcoming inspector general’s report is expected to conclude that McCabe had authorized the release of information to the media and was not forthcoming with the watchdog office as it examined the bureau’s handling of an investigation into Clinton’s emails.
McCabe has vigorously disputed the allegations and said his credibility had been attacked as “part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally” but also the FBI and law enforcement.
Also over the weekend, Trump’s personal lawyer, John Dowd, cited the “brilliant and courageous example” by Sessions and the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility and said Rosenstein should “bring an end” to the Russia investigation “manufactured” by Comey.
In response, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said: “If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it.”
Dowd told the AP that he wasn’t calling on Rosenstein to fire the special counsel immediately and hadn’t discussed with him the idea of dismissing Mueller or ending the probe. Dowd also said he was speaking for himself and not the president.
Mueller is investigating whether Trump’s actions, including Comey’s ouster, constitute obstruction of justice.

Jeff Sessions: Finally, A Reasonable Adult heading the DOJ
Folks, I gotta tell ya: my heart leaped with joy hearing Jeff Sessions give his opening statement at his confirmation hearing for attorney general.  I thought, “Thank you, God!  Finally – an America-loving adult running our DOJ.  What a concept.”
First Obama gave us Eric Holder, a black A.G. with a chip on his shoulder against whites and America.  Out of the box, Holder accused Americans of being racists afraid to honestly discuss racial issues.  To racist leftists like Holder, an honest discussion means white America admitting that they are eternal racist plotting 24/7 to keep minorities down.
Holder sued Arizona, calling them racist for seeking to enforce immigration law.  He sued Texas to block their law requiring ID to vote.  He refused to prosecute the New Black Panthers because they’re “his people” – black like him.
Talk about cojones – after Holder’s in-your-face arrogant racism, how can Democrats use drummed up claims of racism to oppose the confirmation of Sessions?  Answer: The Dems know they have the mainstream media securely in their pocket to promote their lies about Sessions.
After Holder, Obama gave us Loretta Lynch as A.G.  In response to Islamic terrorists murdering innocent Americans on U.S. soil, Lynch immediately threatened to jail anyone speaking badly about Islam.  Because the Obama administration is obsessed with allowing dudes in restrooms with little girls, DOJ head Lynch filed a lawsuit against North Carolina for righteously saying, “No.”
Shamefully, Obama politicized the DOJ.  Lynch teamed with Obama’s adviser Al Sharpton to brand America’s police racist to justify the DOJ taking control of all police departments.  Thus far, about 30 police departments have been taken over by the DOJ.
Unbelievably, Lynch seeks to prosecute and criminalize disagreeing with the left’s narrative regarding climate change.
Do you see why a commonsense thinker like Jeff Sessions as A.G. heading the DOJ is such a breath of fresh air?
Sessions vowed to turn back the negative undeserved branding of our brave men and women in blue.
Regarding law enforcement, Sessions said:
They are the ones on the front lines.  They are better educated, trained, and equipped than ever before.  They are the ones who we rely on to keep our neighborhoods and playgrounds and schools safe.  But in the last several years, law enforcement as a whole has been unfairly maligned and blamed for the actions of a few bad actors and for allegations about police that were not true.  They believe the political leadership of this country abandoned them.  They felt they had become targets.  Morale has suffered.  And last year, while under intense public criticism, the number of police officers killed in the line of duty increased ten percent over 2015.  This is a wake-up call.  This must not continue.
By the way, Hillary vowed to intensify Al Sharpton’s and Black Lives Matter’s war on cops, purposely demonizing police.  Thank God for Trump.
Keeping my article concise, I will not go through the long list of Islamic terrorist attacks that Obama’s DOJ refused to admit were Islamic terrorist attacks.  It was exciting hearing Sessions publicly name those seeking our demise: radical Islamic terrorists.
In recent years, our law enforcement officers also have been called upon to protect our country from the rising threat of terrorism that has reached our shores.  If I am confirmed, protecting the American people from the scourge of radical Islamic terrorism will continue to be a top priority of the Department of Justice.  We will work diligently to respond to threats, using all lawful means to keep the American people safe from our nation’s enemies.
Folks, isn’t this a far cry from Obama’s DOJ refusing to name our enemies and threatening to jail anyone who speaks badly about them?  Praise the Lord!
Jeff Sessions is a great pick for attorney general – a man of character who loves God and country, committed to equal justice for all Americans.  Sessions will be confirmed – another step on the yellow brick road toward making America great again.
