A bunch of people are misinterpreting this as "discouraging aspiring authors from getting into trad pub" and that couldn't be further from the point? I say this as another author, this is clearly advice to ground your expectations going into the industry. I too once believed that if your story is just good, then you were owed being traditionally published. That's absolutely not the case- it's more about marketability and how sellable your story is (which btw doesn't negate how good your story can be just because it has broad market appeal, and vice versa an "unmarketable" story can still be quality work). Trad Pub is often mistaken as a platform for all sorts of stories, when in reality it's a business first and foremost that caters to what they believe are marketable tropes and categories.
And for the record, when an author is bringing up their own difficulties in the industry and you feel the need to dismiss them because "they're a content creator" or just because their experience didn't match yours (where you claim it's far easier than they're painting it out to be), then maybe interrogate why you feel the need to dismiss someone else's experience as entirely invalid.
Some truths about the publishing industry because I certainly got blindsided when going in. Now I'm so broken by this industry I struggle to encourage aspiring writers lmao
