Top Brain Tumor Surgeons in India
A brain tumour is a multiplication of cells within or nearby the brain. Brain tissue is at risk for brain tumours. Brain tumours can grow nearby the brain tissue. The pituitary, pineal, and membranes that concern the exterior of the brain are close by components.
The brain is where some brain tumours may start. They are referred to as primary brain tumours. Cancer can additionally move from a different part of the human body to the brain. These tumours are secondary brain tumours, often known as metastatic brain tumours.
Brain tumours can range from extremely small or huge in size. Some brain tumours are detected at an early stage because their symptoms are evident. Other brain tumours get gigantic before they are discovered. The brain's activity fluctuates across different regions. It's possible that a brain tumour won't immediately reveal symptoms if it develops in a less busy area of the brain. Before the tumour is found, its size may grow to be rather huge.
Doctors generally prescribe a brain tumour surgery as the first option for eradicating tumours from the brain without causing any significant harm. Brain tumour surgery is often used for the treatment of non-cancerous tumours. For the treatment of a brain tumour, several surgical options are available. The patient's condition will determine that.

In a first, BARC-developed plaque therapy successfully used on eye cancer patients in AIIMS, says minister
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)-developed eye cancer therapy has been successfully used for the first time for the treatment of patients with ocular tumours in AIIMS-Delhi and the results of using Ruthenium 106 plaque for treatment of a patient with choroidal hemangioma (benign tumour in blood vessels) have been found to be satisfactory. Union minister of state for atomic energy Jitendra Singh, who facilitated the collaboration between the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, Delhi, informed about the breakthrough and lauded the BARC for developing the “simple and cost-effective therapy” for eye cancer patients. The handling of BARC-developed plaque is very convenient for surgeons and it is said to be on a par with international standards, a statement of the DAE said. Ruthenium plaque therapy involves placing a radioactive source like Ruthenium-106 (a radioisotope) in contact with the surface of the eyeball for cancer therapy. Ru-106 is recovered from radioactive waste and has a simple and slim design. One plaque can treat about 50 patients and its usable life is one year. Besides AIIMS, it has been made available free of cost to two more hospitals, Hyderabad-based Centre for Sight and Sankara Eye Hospital in Bengaluru. Being indigenously developed by BARC, the Ruthenium-106 plaque also gives a boost to PM Narendra Modi’s ‘vocal for local’ call. It all started in October last year when DAE chairman K N Vyas held a detailed discussion with Jitendra Singh regarding the feasibility of developing this regimen of ophthalmic patches. Following this, minister Jitendra Singh, who himself is a doctor, facilitated the collaboration between the DAE and AIIMS. According to Dr Atul Kumar, professor and head of Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, the BARC plaques have been used in seven cases of ocular cancer till now. Out of them, two were used in cases of retinoblastoma, two for choroidal melanoma, two for ocular surface squamous neoplasia and one for choroidal hemangioma. Jitendra Singh said that in the last five years, DAE has striven to diversify its activities and applications for the benefit of the common man. He said developing the indigenous plaque brachytherapy for eye cancer patients is also one such initiative in the area of medical management. Jitendra Singh, who also handles the ministry of development of North Eastern Region, also informed that the Borooah Cancer Hospital in Guwahati has been co-opted with the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, which functions under the aegis of the DAE. The DAE is also contributing in other areas. For example, BARC is developing an advanced bulletproof jacket for security personnel and in the farm sector, it is sharing with food companies its irradiation technique to extend shelf life of vegetables and other perishable food products.

Pancreas-Kidney Transplant Gives New Life to Diabetic
A team of doctors successfully performed a combined pancreas-kidney transplant on a 36-year old diabetic man eat a city hospital on June 15 after the family members of a brain-dead teenager consented to donate
Tumblr media
his vital organs. The 11-hour long complex surgery was carried out at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH), which was also the first health center in the state to carry out such a transplant in November 2016
The donor, a 19-year-old boy was riding pillion on his father’s two-wheeler when the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a state transport bus on June 9. While the teenager’s father died on the spot, the boy suffered grievous head injuries and was later declared brain dead. On June 14, the family members of the boy agreed to donate his vital organs.
The recipient suffered from type 1 diabetes since childhood and his condition further deteriorated after he developed kidney failure a couple of years ago. “After the transplant, the patient is recovering well and does not require insulin. His blood sugar level is within normal range and his kidney functions are also normalizing. multi-organ transplant surgeon Vrishali Patil told TOI.
Patil led the team of surgeons including transplant experts Ninad Deshmukh and Bhagayashree Khaladkar, in performing complicated surgery, which is common in western countries but rare in India. The recipient initially presented with cardiopulmonary failure and life-threatening fluctuating blood sugar not responding to medical management. Senior nephrologist transplant Atul Mulay treated him initially and worked him up to sustain the transplant surgery. This involved fine-tuning his dialysis and Elaborating on the complexities, Patil said, “It involved connecting a part of the small intestine and whole pancreas to major blood vessels on one side of the pelvis and then connecting the kidney to the blood vessels and urinary bladder on the opposite side.”
This required critical monitoring throughout and immediately after the surgery. Hospital’s anesthetist Sujit Saraf, intensivist Prasad Akole, gastroenterologist Dr. Sachin Palnitkar provided medical care with Mulay during this period.
“For someone like this young man with uncontrolled type 1 diabetes and complications like hypoglycemia (blood sugars less than 70) renal failure, cardiopulmonary failure, pancreas transplant is a life-saving operation. The transplant surgery provides freedom from dialysis and a better quality of life.” Patil said.
