Appearance:
Lovino is a rather short man, standing at the ‘impressive’ height of five foot six. He has dark, tanned skin, and an almost stocky build. His arms have some sort of muscle definition, but that doesn’t especially carry to his chest or stomach. His hair is dark brown and parted from the side, and as a rule will appear slightly wavy. However, if it is left to dry naturally from being wet, Lovino had to resign himself to curls that he insists don’t suit him.
His eyes are a greenish hazel, perhaps best described as a sort of olive green. He has a roundish face, an almost Roman nose, and a mouth that is more often than not set into a slight frown. He tends to hold himself ever so slightly hunched inwards, his gaze usually on the floor.
Headcanons:
Lovino is always warm to the touch, regardless of the temperature of the room, etc
He sleeps on his stomach
He has ridiculously obnoxious dad sneezes.
He’s quite adept at playing the glass harp
Personality:
Initial first impressions of Lovino Romulus Vargas are that of a moody, short tempered man who has a sharp tongue and an even sharper glare- and those people who see as such wouldn’t be wrong. Lovino’s temper is frightfully short, and sometimes the slightest of things can set him off into a fit of anger, and he is very snappish in general. All of this behaviour does however seem simultaneously muted, and in addition to this Lovino is rather reticent, reluctant to divulge much information about himself.
Women may see a much more charming man- to a lady, Lovino is much brighter, and more open and willing to chat, and of an overa much sweeter disposition. However, if one is too quick to pry, he may still show a certain degree of curtness, whilst avoiding trying to be rude.
However, once Lovino’s five layers of bitterness, fear, and anger have been chipped away, one can uncover much more of him. The sharp tongue and wit still remain, though Lovino’s tone is much less cutting and more of a playful banter. He’s a little loud, and quick to laugh if you hook onto his dark sense of humour. As well as this, he is loyal to a fault, and though it takes time to gain his trust, you are hard pressed to properly lose it afterwards.
However, he also locks away distinct feelings of unworthiness and self deprecation. Years of feeling compared to his brother and inadvertantly being belittled for the abilities that were a part of him cause him to have a very pessimistic view of himself and his life. He doesn’t hold much stock in himself compared to others- but that being said, he is determined and a hard worker when he puts his mind to it.
Strengths:
Loyal He is not naive Determined Intelligent
Weaknesses:
Volatility- in both personality in magic, Lovino is a little unpredictable at best. Defensive Pessimistic No self confidence
Backstory:
When Benedetta Esposito had fallen pregnant with her first child, she had been very young, barely nineteen. She was quick to marry Vittorio, the man that she had been with at the time, so that they could have a proper family. He was strong minded and opinionated, but for her he would always concede. A year later, Feliciano came into the world and the family couldn’t be happier. The four, along with Benedetta’s father, Romulus (who Lovino took to exceptionally well) lived a relatively peaceful life together.
Lovino was born to a young mother, who he was close to, with a younger brother born later; Feliciano. He was a bright, cheerful child, and for a while they lived happily in Southern Italy. For all pf his young life, Lovino would grow up surrounded by amazing feats of architecture; one day he hoped that he might be able to . Yet, something began to emerge in the shadows. When Lovino was about five, he could make the shadows dance and the flames flicker. Benedetta was amazed by her first son’s ability, and even more so when Feliciano began to make command of the air and the light. Vittorio, however, knew the true nature of what both of his children could do. Though Feliciano could control the Air, like himself, it was his first son’s powers that frightened him, that he felt needed to be kept under control. So Feliciano was sent to live with the boy’s Grandfather, Romulus, to ensure his safety. Lovino stayed with his parents- Vittorio was determined that the boy should not become a danger to either himself or the rest of the world. He promised to teach him as best he could a way to channel his abilities that would prevent him from being a danger to himself or the world around him. However, learnt prejudice can heavily influence a man. What has started out as pure intentions became twisted into Lovino feeling as though he must hide his abilities completely, all of them; he believed himself to be Wrong in the eyes of his father, especially when his only point of comparison were the delightful tales of his ‘perfect Feliciano’. Years passed, the ideology of Lovino’s father twisting itself to the point where Benedetta had simply had enough. She was tired of watching the man she loved come into thinking terrible things, and even more so that their son was suffering for it. The two argued furiously over the matter, and in the end Vittorio was told to leave, and that he could come back when he was ready to accept the abilities that their son had.
From there onwards, it was just Lovino and his mother. The two had been close before, but after his father was no longer there to put stress upon Lovino they grew ever closer, with Benedetta gradually coaxing Lovino into using and practising with the magic he was born with, a opposed to internalising it as Lovino had been before. She was mildly successful; Lovino would only use his fire magic very rarely and with little power. He refused to actively use the shadow magic, though in keeping himself so tightly wound both abilities ran rampant if he became too emotional. And for a while, this was fine- they managed despite the steadily increasing mild burns across Benedetta arms from where she had tried on multiple occasions to help her son calm down. But he pushed her away; she wasn’t magical, he feared that he might eventually do something worse than a couple of first degree burns.
Lovino’s fears were right.
A letter was left out on the table- it had been open, and was handwritten as opposed to typed. What could he possibly do save for let his curiosity get the better of him? But, as he read, his blood ran cold. His Grandfather, the Nonmo that he had such fond memories of, and to this day still idolised, was dead. Illness, it said, but no one had told him of any illness. Understandably, he was distraught, his mother facing the brunt of this anguish when she returned to see her son in tears over this news. He couldn’t understand why she hadn’t told him, unaware that Benedetta had barely known herself. Years of holding himself back, on top of the new weight atop his shoulders, proved too much. Lovino had already been simmering as it was, but flame and shadow erupted from him with a pained yell, engulfing the house. When Lovino managed to reign himself in, both the house and his mother were decimated. Horrified and disgusted with what he had done, Lovino fled; there really was something wrong with him. His father had been right.
The university attracted him because it specialised in Magic- he chose his minors as best he could to correlate with the abilities he was born with, but his major would be architecture. He needed to learn how to control himself, yes, but his mind kept being drawn back to the beautiful buildings of his home town. All his life, he’d been something that destroyed, that ruined due to the dark magic that he harboured. Lovino no longer wanted to be defined by that.
Sample RP:
“Hey, Feli, look!” Lovino whispered conspiratorially. The child smirked, his eyes alight with a smug sense of pride as he beckoned his little brother closer. Carefully, Lovino conjured a little ball of flame in the palm of his hand. His smirk widened. “Here’s the best part!”
Closing his eyes, Lovino let out a breath. The shadows that occurred naturally began to flicker, falling out of rhythm with the firelight as they began to take their own forms. The shadows danced for Feliciano, delighting the little boy, as well as Lovino when the latter of opened his eyes to watch his little brother’s reaction. With the encouragement and excitement, Lovino’s confidence began to grow.
“Hey, Feli.” He said. “What if I-”
“Lovino.” The boy in question jumped, the flames in his hand bursting into a small shower of embers at the sound of his father’s voice. “Come here, son, leave your brother be.”
Lovino complied without question, though something about the look in his father’s eyes worried him greatly.
