your theme is so precious!!!!! i simply have to know how you do these gifs and come up with themes because i am obsessed!

omg thanku 🤭 😚 tbh i get a lot of theme inspo from pinterest like esp kpop, taylor swift and sabrina carpenter prints (abs. obsessed with the vintage/retro prints going around for sabrina) and i often follow a lot of designers on behance who throw out freebies for photoshop esp for text and textures!! i've absolutely loved this style lately (but tbh i swing a lot between header/theme ideas a lot) 🫡

also i love colour palette generators for theme ideas! esp to inspire a general vibe for the story (like what emotion invoked by the story is linked to what colour if that makes sense?)

as for gifs! i was lucky to get an in depth tutorial from the incredible @sugurugetos (honestly one of my fave gifmakers on this site and soo sweet 💓) and she taught me how to get 4k footage from jjk files and make it 60fps <3 i use mpv to screencap, and photoshop to make my gifs as hd as possible and in that: i use camera raw to colour and tweak them, as well as filter gallery grain to add some sharpness in them and cover up some noise/dither! (i'm happy to explain this more!)

i also get a lot of design inspo from deviantart! there are incredible mockups and widget type of designs on there that i like to recreate/add to my gifs <3

Hi Daphne I hope you don't mind this and you don't have to answer this if you don't want to but lately I've been trying to write longer fics or more fleshed out JJK works in the jjk x reader tag but I just always feel so sad when they patter out at 150 notes or 500, when simple notefishy type of headcanon posts or short ficlets get 10k easily, I know we're not meant to care about notes but its just so demotivating and I know this sound mean but it pisses me off

hmmm hii yess! i do think i get the idea of what ur referring to 🤔 😭 and tbh i don't want to tell u anything false positive like 'ohh its okay, who cares about notes' or 'write what you want :)' because while yes that's true...u should always be creating for urself instead of trying to churn out fics that will get notes otherwise it'll really drain you in the long term

on the other hand i understand what you mean by demotivating and u might feel that its unfair at times (totally valid to feel!) but the most genuine realistic advice i can give you is that 10 funny/friendly tumblr mutuals are better than any 10k notes like i promise you will have sm more fun on this website with friends who comment/reblog/share ur posts (and vice versa!) as opposed to waiting for ur fic to finally 'take off' and start getting traction ☹️

daph do you have any advice on someone who wants to get started on gif-making? does the process differ from medium? (anime/movies/music etc.)

yess of course, i'd be more than happy to help <3 ❤️ credit ofc to this process mainly goes to @sugurugetos esp for movies and music 🫶

you need photoshop. cracked or bought is entirely up to you, but you need a photoshop that has a working video timeline (and preferably camera raw filter)

mpv! i use the screencapping method where i load them into one gif in photoshop. there's a script that people use and i can share that too <3 it looks messy and hard but its actually p easy 😌

and imo, the process does differ for the medium! i'm not a massive expert on the movies because i haven't ever posted those gifs. i gif kpop stages over on @okkotsusyuutas and i use uhd files from places like 4sashi and twitter, or 4k fancams 😚 for anime, i use uhdmovies or olamovies to get the 6gb bluray remux files (these are like the raw files, so the highest quality you can get)

you can get master files for music videos from sites like sharemania, but 4k from youtube also looks good!

the way you make the gif will also really depend on what you're giffing. my biggest frustration with giffing anime and animation is that the gif can look more dithered or grainy because a gif can only hold 256 colours and that limits an anime's vibrant colour palette. i add my own grain and noise in photoshop to combat that dither, and my sharpening settings are completely different for anime as opposed to music videos/stages/movies! (i can share!)

also tutorials! there are so many tutorials on tumblr, like usergif has a great directory to sort through <3

hi daph! med student to med student, i’m curious as to how do you find the time to write? do you set aside time for it or write whenever you want to? i’m usually drowning in work n sometimes literally can’t think of anything other than the current content. please share your secrets!!

omg heyy fellow med student!! honestly, this is a very fair question and the truthful answer is that i either spend a lot of time sprinting and writing over like the weekend and then i'm too tired to even finish a sentence over the rest of the week.

but what i try to actually do is make a schedule, i've got a google calendar with vague outlines of when i want certain fics to be posted and i just work on them step by step (with plenty of allowance and margin for when real life gets in the way). my writing process is usually divided into a few parts:

day 1: fic planning, title ideas, i make the layout and keep it in my drafts, and begin roughly putting down scenes in dot points

day 2: first draft, part 1. i write like half the fic but i don't bother about being too picky about my writing. i just need to get the words down.

day 3: first draft, part 2. " second half of the fic <3

day 4: this is where i cull down the fic and genuinely try to make it good. i check vocab, grammar, literary references + sources if research involved etc

day 5: final draft + post !

but like as we know, uni and content gets so busy that the most important key is never beating urself up when u don't meet ur deadline like i never want to be too harsh on myself or disappointed if i don't finish a fic on time or post enough ❤️

please make a gif tutorial one day! I'd love to try it 😅 I've tried EZgif but I don't know how to make longer, proper gifs with all the overlays (?)

ofc! i'll prob do an in depth tutorial one day but i use photoshop 2024 and i use a program called mpv to screencap that a lot of gifmakers use, so i gif on my laptop then <3 there are different blending options on ps for overlays, such as setting the mode to screen or multiply :D
