One way to gauge how much respect / adoration Toothless has for you is by whether or not he looks to you for guidance and input. Be it in a scenario of danger or mundane interaction, Toothless is a very headstrong dragon. If he wants to do something, he usually will. 

In this scene, despite his clear fury, he looks not only to Hiccup to determine their approach, but also Astrid. During the bonding time with Valka, when it is time for the dragons to feast, Toothless is practically enamoured by all the fish, but he still looks to Hiccup on his back for the go-ahead.

It is not that Toothless does not value the input of other people ; but there are only a few he trusts so much that he takes their leadership over his own decisions without question.  Only a handful he respect enough to be considerate in moments that come natural to his being as a dragon.

To us, it might seem like simple human decency to ask someone if they would share their food, but Toothless? He is a powerful dragon that grew up with the lesson that every meal could be his last. Though he knew the concept of sharing, he never applied it until Hiccup came along because there never was another who had shown the same courtesy.  If he wanted something, he just took it.

HOMERIC EPITHET  // You are Toothless, rouser of armies.  Be sure to get monogrammed towels.  Homer often used this epithet to describe Apollo, who is the god of many things, including but not limited to music, truth, the sun, poetry, and the plague, which is, you know, unfortunate.

FATAL FLAW  //  You’re too clever by half.  Your intelligence is unmatched, but your smart mouth is going to get you into trouble one of these days.  Everyone says so.  Odds are you’ll make one witty remark too many and meet a tragic, easily preventable end that surprises no one in the least.  You’ll be mourned, of course, but we all saw it coming, and you kind of deserved it.

GREEK MYTHOLOGY DEATH  //  Murdered by accident, in Achilles’ armor.  One day, during the Trojan War, Achilles decides to just up and quit.  He’s the greatest warrior apparently ever, so this is something of an issue. You can’t bear to watch men die in battle for Achilles’ pride, so you don his armor yourself and lead his men into battle.  Everyone thinks you are Achilles, and morale is high.  You die, however, because somewhere in there you remember that you’re actually terrible at fighting.  Silver lining: Achilles avenges your death something FIERCE.  So that's something.

Although there is no question that Toothless has a very special place in his heart for Hiccup and gravitates towards his company more than that of others, the Night Fury would challenge Death itself for any member of the village he now calls home. From the youngest child to oldest warrior, the people of Berk are his family, and he will protect them with his life, including their dragons.
