An Overview of New York Giants Championship Success

The New York Giants remain among the oldest and most successful professional sports franchises in the United States. Since joining the National Football League (NFL) during the 1925 season, the Giants have made five Super Bowl appearances, winning all but one. However, the franchise's championship success began long before the launch of the NFL's Super Bowl era in 1967.

The 1927 New York Giants went 11-1-1 and defeated the New York Yankees, a short-lived NFL team, 13-0 to win the franchise its first championship. The 1933 Giants also won 11 games and reached the first of three consecutive NFL Championship games, including a victory in 1934. New York won additional championships in 1938 and 1956, for a total of four championships and 15 championship appearances.

Following the NFL and American Football League merger, the Giants' championship success would become less frequent, but their winning percentage in championship games would improve significantly. However, New York first had to endure a playoff drought spanning 1964 through 1980. During this streak, the Giants managed a winning record just once.

The franchise's fortunes began to change in 1984, the team's second season under head coach Bill Parcells. Parcells coached quarterback Phil Simms to back-to-back winning records and post-season appearances in 1984 and 1985 before winning 14 games in 1986, a franchise record that has endured through the 2024 NFL season. Parcells developed one of the league's best defenses to support a strong rushing game. Lawrence Taylor led the league with 20.5 sacks and received the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) honor.

The Giants dominated the playoffs, defeating the San Francisco 49ers for the second consecutive season, this time by a score of 49-3, followed by a 17-0 sweep of Washington. Simms, who connected on 88 percent of his passes, became Super Bowl MVP after the team's 39-20 win over the Denver Broncos.

Coach Parcells and the Giants would face injuries and other challenges over the following three seasons. Still, in 1990, they posted a 13-3 record and made another run to the Super Bowl despite a season-ending injury to Simms. Once again, the Giant's league-leading defense resulted in a comfortable victory to open the post-season, a 31-3 win over the Chicago Bears. However, New York narrowly overcame the two-time defending champion San Francisco 49ers in the following round, needing two fourth-quarter field goals to secure the 15-13 upset.

Super Bowl XXV against the Buffalo Bills, another New York franchise, proved similarly challenging. The Bills initially led 12-3. However, a 14-yard Stephen Baker reception cut the lead to two points at halftime. The Giants scored another touchdown in the third quarter. Then, a 31-yard dash from Thurman Thomas to open the fourth quarter put the Bills ahead 19-17. A Matt Bahr field goal with eight minutes remaining proved the difference, with the Giants securing their second Super Bowl in five seasons, 20-19.

Coach Parcells would leave the team in the offseason, and the Giants began to retool the roster. In 2000, the Giants made their only losing Super Bowl appearance, a 34-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. However, the 2007 and 2011 New York Giants, led by coach Tom Coughlin, would become two of the unlikeliest Super Bowl winners in NFL history. At 9-7, the 2011 team boasts the lowest win total for a Super Bowl winner; the 10-6 2007 team tied for the second-worst record for a Super Bowl champion, preventing the New England Patriots from completing a perfect season.
