Oh boy big headcanon I’ll be incorporating my interpretation of Lukas and trying to give as much detail as I can for mine specifically. Note that I don’t have access to a Japanese Version of SoV though I have played Gaiden in Japanese to an extent, the only references I have for the Japanese Version are from videos that were graciously given to me by @xodayakana (ty so much !!)

I am NOT a professional translator. Everything I translate if I do should be taken with a grain of salt. I have studied the Japanese language and culture for around 7 years, so I feel I can speak on the matter, but I am NOT native. Please forgive me for anything I might slip up on.

Not spoiler free, if you get spoiled somehow it’s not my fault.

I will be putting my own creative liberties with my own headcanons so this will not be necessarily a character study completely. I am doing a character study + my own headcanons and applying it to my muse, please note that not everything said in this will be “canon”.

I’ll be using the English Localized names just to make things easier for people, since I assume most people have played the localization and not the Japanese version.

This isn’t an essay, it may be messy at times, and I apologize if my train of thought can be confusing to follow, if you have any questions if you want me to clarify anything, feel free to ask !!

The goal of this post is to give some insight into what I take away from Luka(s)’s character, specifically from Echoes since it has a lot more content to work with. I do plan on looking through Gaiden (and any other materials that he may appear in and help incorporate my thoughts on the matter).

BACKGROUND .

Although the English Version of Echoes, the first thing we see about Lukas’s background is when he talks with Fernand in Chapter 1-- In the English version he’s described as a “Backwater Noble” (in the Japanese version, 田舎貴族) straight up saying his position in the form of nobility, especially to someone who cares about such status, and with an overarching theme of nobility being a part of the game. Lukas ends up falling into a very gray area for how the game plays out this aspect of his being. For one, the game goes to pretty great measures, especially in the DLC to tell players that Lukas is from the country, being very direct in the Japanese version.

But he is still of noble blood, I feel it sticks out more in the Japanese version, as there seems to be a lot more distinction between how nobles speak than how people from common birth speak. Lukas is very polite, your pretty standard polite speech-- even to the point which he uses “私” (watashi) rather than other more masculine versions of the word “I” which is much more common especially in media like games or anime. Even Clive, uses watashi-- showing a common theme that such politeness should be upheld within a “noble” family. But this is where Lukas starts differing between Clive, Clair, etc.

In the Outpost Rescue DLC, it is established that Forsyth did talk to Lukas in a polite manner, even to the point in calling out Python for speaking to him casually. With the game constantly pointing out noble blood, and how one must respect such. Lukas brushes it off saying,

“ 私は騎士団にも所属していませんしあなたたちより年少です。”

compared to the localized version,

“ Noble I may be, but I’m young and yet unknighted. I don’t warrant a “sir”. ”

The biggest thing that sticks out is the fact that he specifically states that he is younger than Forsyth and Python in the Japanese version, albeit only by a year-- but it’s a lot more important for that to be more specific in the Japanese version. Lukas comes off that he doesn’t necessarily care about his nobility as much as others in the game, nor even uses such a status for his own benefit. This is how Forsyth started speaking casually like he would with Python towards Lukas.

Both Forsyth AND Python, speak in a polite manner to Clive, even though Python is still a lot more loose about it, he still does show respect, and even though this could be accounted for because Clive is older, my point still stands while with Lukas-- they speak casually to him, Even Clive does the same, almost throwing any “nobility” out from any conversations he is allowed to have. The only really almost “exception” that I have come across so far is Clair, but she is also younger than him so at least some politeness would be expected-- considering her higher rank in nobility.

Moving on from his formalities in speaking, and how he is spoken to, I feel this ties in which his character and upbringing. It is said that he was born in the borderlands of Zofia, from what we can assume is the countryside, as it is constantly being referred to as the countryside in the Japanese version. Even from that, he is the second born into a family, that is not from the same mother as his older brother. Considering how Echoes handles such issues, I will assume that his father slept around with multiple women, even to the point where Lukas could be considered an unwanted child.

Though the possibility stands that he is an unwanted child, it doesn’t seem that his family had much of a choice than but to raise him. I don’t think he particularity had a horrible childhood, but I do believe that he was probably neglected more compared to his older brother, as his mannerisms are proper still, in par with how others of nobility tend to speak in this game though his father’s actions from Forsyth’s Support with him further point to my belief in my claim.

This could be pointed at the fact that his father constantly wanted him to train, aiming for him to be in the military, as well as his older brother forcing him to join, of course not of his own will as he’s stated within the game. He says that such doesn’t bother him much, but from the standpoint of his family, the army would be the quickest way to get rid of him without having to directly do it themselves.

I feel that growing up, Lukas probably was not shown a lot of love or affection-- it’s obvious that he still has feelings, but in a situation where he would not be able to express such emotions, especially being trained at an early age with the expectation to become a soldier, I feel that his emotions to connect with people were not properly taken care of, and due to such, he has a harder time expressing and understanding his feelings, often having to nullify them, especially when it comes to connections with his family ( I will talk more in depth about this later on ).

RELATIONSHIPS .

Not necessarily in the romantic sense, but as a whole and how he views certain people in the relationships and bonds he has made with the members of the Deliverance. The biggest ones I would like to dive into would be Clive, Forsyth and Python (I would include Alm & Fernand but that might be a post for another day so this doesn’t get TOO long). These are the main characters that have a very significant (in my humble opinion) due to the dialogue that is exchanged between those characters.

Although it seems that Clive is a very big part of Lukas especially during the events of Echoes, even the DLC does not give me much background of Lukas and Clive’s relationship. I can assume that they have a mutual respect relationship going on, as Clive seems to try and be the background “moral” support for some, as he actively encourages and supports Alm in his trials, even defending him against Fernand, and throughout the things that he has been called. But for Lukas, there isn’t a lot of backstory between them-- I assume that Clive was someone that is one of the first people that Lukas could truly open up to. From what I can establish is that Lukas and Clive have some kind of history at least more than Forsyth and Python. But his reaction to Clive in their supports about his cool and collected personality, obviously bothered him. There is a part of him that doesn’t wish to be seen in such a way, especially to Clive specifically it seems even when Clive’s comment was suppose to be a compliment.

His openness towards Clive seems that there is a very open connection between them, even talking about his problem that is a big core issue that he seems to have with himself is not being passionate, as he discusses to an extent with Python-- that he does think that the whatever Clive and Mathilda that he lacks such. I feel that because of his upbringing, he doesn’t necessarily have a reference point to go off of when it comes to emotions, and with Clive being... well much more emotional than most soldiers, Clive and Mathilda’s love is probably much more an exception rather than the norm.

Because of this, Clive is almost like a role model to Lukas, someone he looks up to, someone who can be seen with passion and be admired for it-- his love for Mathilda, and even on the job, it’s something that he desires which is why I feel that Clive’s compliment in their support had got him down, but in their A support, I feel that in a way Clive helped him almost detach from such an ideology, supporting Lukas in his own way, without trying to change him.

Forsyth’s conversation with him surrounds a lot about backstory for both of them in a sense, as they both mention their home lives before the war, especially when Lukas talks about how his father made him train a lot while Forsyth’s happened to be more in the studious sections, and how both of them almost seemed to desire the opposite. To me this support conversation is very insightful because this makes me believe that if Lukas actually had the option, I don’t think that he would have thrown himself into war. He does touch upon that he doesn’t regret joining, even if it ultimately wasn’t his decision-- it shows the side of him that would prefer reading and more studious things than holding a spear.

But his personality doesn’t necessarily seem to show that he cares much, he seems to have become a kind of person who has become very accepting of how people are, and that shows even in himself. The only time that we’ve gotten direct reference to Lukas letting his temper loose is during the Southern Outpost DLC, where all the soldiers (except Forsyth and Python) ditch him due to him lashing out at someone who was greater nobility to him for calling him out. This is definitely something new, something that isn’t seen

Python seems to be an interesting case when it comes to his relationships between Clive and Forsyth, since the first thing we see from them is that he’s very casual with Lukas-- even though Lukas doesn’t seem to mind one bit, in the Localization he seems to make a lot of nicknames for Lukas as well, as if they were good friends. Python seems to carry a more lax image of Lukas within the games, in the Deliverance DLC stating,

俺たちと同じみたいに振るまってるけどやっぱ、あいつも騎士なんだなあ・・・・・

with the English Localization,

He’s so down to earth that I keep thinking he’s one of us. But pulling a stunt like that takes true knightly courage.

Though I don’t think that the English and Japanese match up perfectly, it’s good enough for what I’m going for. He says specifically that he thinks of Lukas like Forsyth and him, and says the difference between them, further connecting the story’s theme of heritage vs. effort-- but the fact that the English localization says that he is down to earth, almost gives insight on how non-noble people see nobles at least how the localization seems to interpret it as.

ROMANCE .

Now here comes something that I’ve wanted to discuss for a long time now. I personally headcanon Lukas as Demiromantic/Asexual for reasons that I’ve tried to talk about above but go more in depth (if I can, and try not to overlap my points). A big reason that I see Lukas as Demiromantic, even Aromantic is because I don’t think that he knows how to properly express his feelings, nor does he really know how to say them if he really did. A lot of his support with Python, especially in their A support shows that Lukas doesn’t really know how to deal with the concept of love, even to the point of saying that he doesn’t miss nor longs to see the woman that he was with before he went to join the army. Python counters this with saying that he is still young which is true, and something that he can figure out for himself-- but like I’ve stated in my background, I feel that a lot of his problems when it comes to emotion root from his family, and the lack of ability to express emotions.

He is not a robot, nor is he necessarily incapable of loving, however you want to take his orientation, its more so the fact that I imagine he would get very awkward in a romantic situation-- he already fears having trouble dealing with feeling... and sort of passion in general, romance would not come off easy to him-- without any sort of affection from his family to go off of, he’d come off as awkward and clunky in a relationship.

And with his upbringing, even saying “I love you” is something that he would have trouble doing, mainly because he would have a hard time explaining his feelings, even to himself-- not that he wouldn’t want to if he truly loved someone. This is also why I believe Lukas to be Asexual as well, not saying that he would be a sex-repulsed Asexual, but considering how hard it seems for even general emotion or “fire” to come to him is rare, getting sexually attached to someone would be just as much if even more of a challenge.
