Something else for Marjorie Traitor Green to have a hissy fit about.
Across the United States, colleges and universities are doing their part to help students from Ukraine. Since the war began, more than 140 U.S. colleges and universities have helped 230 Ukrainian students continue their studies through the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Emergency Student Fund for Ukraine, the nonprofit said.
It’s not easy to study when a neighboring genocidal dictator is conducting a campaign of war crimes to subjugate your country.
Universities in other countries have also been helpful to Ukrainian students. Poland shares a border with Ukraine and is host to more Ukrainian refugees than any other country.
Thousands of Ukrainian students find peace in Poland
Americans are poorly educated about Eastern European history. Except for Copernicus (real name: Mikołaj Kopernik), we learn almost nothing in schools about Eastern European history prior to 1914 except for bizarre and exotic characters like Ivan the Terrible and Vlad Dracul. And the period since then is mostly concerned with Russia/USSR and mass atrocities committed by Hitler in the region.
So I hope Ukrainian students studying in the US will encourage their American friends to look beyond the superficial treatment American schools give to Ukraine and the rest of Eastern Europe.
