It was one of the biggest book events in 2019, Margaret Atwood wrote the sequel to "The Handmaid's Tale". Last december I wrote my positive review to the first one and thanks to the lovely, copy-sending @polly__flintandherbooks 😍, I now made it through "The Testaments". . Well, it was fun. Atwood knows how to build up tension, it entertained me. But it never touched me on a deeper level. And I have an example for that, to show what I missed the most in this book: Aunt Lydia. She tells us how she got captured and tortured by the new government. After it she turned into the leading Aunt of Gilead. The inner process between being a convict and getting into the highest female position of the country, the psychological turnaround to choose this way, to show that, that would be high quality for me. But in "The Testaments", this process unfortunately got lost between a dot and a new sentence. . Then the main story is subdivided into the reports of three Gileadian people. But these three don't sound different, they come like out of Atwood's mouth and not out of the character's. In the end she does this thing that I call the J-K-Rowling-trick, she lets one character that was underestimated or misjudged, unexpectedly turn into a hero, for the readers and the characters. Here it's Agnes friend, Becka. But that was a well-needed extra. . So I really enjoyed this book for hearing how the story developed after the Handmaid's report, but I don't need a reread. 📖 Начинаю новую книжную главу) в неё входят четыре книги, совершенно разные сюжеты, писатели и темы. Две из группы уже начаты, но времени катастрофически не хватает, когда их читать неизведанно?! А на фотокарточки чудесная "Рождественская история" Чарльза Диккенса, была, подарила мной племяннице. Это ее любимая книга с очень причудливыми картинками. Продолжаем читать, развиваться и идти к мечте. И, напоследок: "Хорошая книга всегда кажется мне слишком короткой." Hey, this is me again, waiting for trends to diminish before I might try them too. Anyway, I love me a good dystopia. Even more when it becomes realistic at some point. . Gilead. A totalitarian regime in form of a brutal theocracy, enslaving fertile lower-class women to live as bodies to give birth, the handmaids. Such a strange version of an ugly patriarchy. Offred. The narrator who refused to tell us her real pre-Gilead name, most likely for not being detectable. "The Handmaid's Tale" is her personal testimonial of her life in and before Gilead. . I felt like it was a foggy night, I was sitting on a chair in a big empty cellar room, on another chair the hooded handmaid and she was telling me her story with a lowered voice. What Margaret Atwood wrote felt intelligent to me, noticeable in her use of language, but also in a good balance between pleasing the reader with content, but omiting parts to tease the reader. Although I must say, it is not a complicated story, it lives mostly from this balance and the dangerous, silent and brutal atmosphere. . I finally read it. It deserves it's status as a modern classic and I wouldn't want to miss the reading experience! Now I would like to start with the series.
