Tagged by @musetta3 to post 10 songs I like by 10 different artists. Let’s do this.
Ω Παναγιά μου Ανωγειανή by Loudovikos ton Anogeion. A lament for the razing of Anogeia in 1944 (that means World War II, exercise discretion when reading). Pretty song. Depressing as hell.
Isdalkvinna by Gåte. Inspired by a murder victim who was never identified, because apparently “really like a song, look up the lyrics, turns out they’re so depressing I have to lay off listening to the song now” is just how this works now.
Sobrevolant la ciutat by Marina Rossell. I don’t know quite enough Catalan to tell you for absolutely certain that this one isn’t depressing, but it’s at least cheery enough not to have deleterious effects on my mental health if I listen to it too much. Whew.
Vô Imbolá by Zeca Baleiro. This one’s got some memories attached—my dad and I first heard it back in the early 2000s, then a couple of years later I took some Portuguese classes and it was one of the songs the professor had us listen to, and I was like, “hey, I know this one! ohhhh, that’s what he’s saying”. (Some mild flashing lights in the video.)
Move, I’m Indigenous by Uyarakq. Look, have you seen his oeuvre? I didn’t go with any of his really fun songs. Admire my restraint. Admire it. (Brief bit of shirtlessness in the video.)
Λεμονανθούς σε στόλισα by Kostantis Pistiolis and Eirini Konstantinou. Come on, he wasn’t going to not make an appearance. Also, we’re back to the depressing stuff, because this one is about a mother preparing her son’s body for burial.
Lingua Mendax by Qntal. Presumably due to having a woman on lead vocals rather than the man originally indicated by the text, they changed the gender of the addressee to masculine. They did not, however, change the speaker’s gender, so, uh, I guess she’s singing about being a man on the outs with his boyfriend now? *shrug emoji*
Dolgesuorbmagežiiguin by Mari Boine. Look, if you thought she wasn’t going to make an appearance here, you don’t know me very well. “Make me believe/there is no fear/with a feathered touch/float me/to castle clouds”
Venus Lullaby by Puta Volcano. Honestly, I’m still not entirely over the “wait, are they from Chania?!” factor, but also they’re genuinely a lot of fun.
Barbara Ellen by Joel Frederiksen. JOEL. :D
