ok so i came here to gush about the lukey fic but now i’m distracted by how gorgeous this theme is!!
omfg 😍 it’s srsly perfection.. i think this one is your best one yet. i love love love it!!
ANYWAYS back to the task at hand.. i don’t have time rn to give the lukey fic (‘only one i want’) a proper reblog but i just wanted to say that i absolutely adored it!! i’ve def been know to be the insecure gf from time to time and with someone as hot as lukey it would be extra hard to not be.
but, i think you captured him perfectly. i truly think when he fell for someone he would def only have eyes for girl and he would be so sweet and soft when he comforted her over it reaffirming that his girl is all he wants and will ever want.
this fic just made me ten kinds of soft 🥹 and i wanted you to know. as soon as i get the time i’ll give it the proper reblog it deserves ‹𝟹
stop you're making me blush 🤭 got me giggling and shit
but i do have to agree, i think this is my favorite one i've done !
but thank you thank you thank you 🥹 that actually means so much to me that you liked it and you read it. you just made my day you don't even know

She had let herself into their apartment halfway through the second period. She had been watching from her dorm and when the first fight broke out, two seconds into the game, she knew the team was in for a wild night. As the game went on and they showed the bench and the players, she knew both her boyfriend and his brother were tired.
That’s when she made the executive decision to “break in” to their apartment and make them dinner. She was grateful that their fridge was fully stocked and she didn’t have to run back out to the grocery store. She got to work quickly, making something easy but also filling for both of them. While spaghetti and meatballs weren’t any of their favorite meals, not that she was hungry anyway, she knew they would appreciate the effort nonetheless.
When the game was over she sighed at the final score, after what they had been through tonight, they deserved the win. Worried about Luke and being one of only four defensemen on the ice, she looked to see how much time he was actually on the ice and was appalled when it read 32:49. She knew he had been tired these past few weeks, this team felt like it was on a never-ending cycle of bad luck.
She was setting the plates down moments before they walked in the door, but when she was in the bathroom, that’s when she heard them. She heard the clatter of keys and shoes and walked out immediately. Luke was attempting to stand upright, slightly leaning on his older brother. Jack looked equally tired, attempting to support both him and Luke.
She frowned as she made her way over to them, lightly grabbing onto Luke to lessen the weight on Jack’s body. He sighed in relief as he kicked his shoes off and made his way to sit down on the couch. Y/n stayed with Luke in the kitchen, walking him over to one of the chairs. With one hand she reached for his head and took the beanie he had been wearing off, using her other one to run her fingers through his damp curls.
“Why don’t you go take a shower, both of you,” Jack whined from the couch while Luke just buried his head into her shoulder.
She felt like she could cry from the exhaustion they were displaying. She knew how they got, both of them. She had been dating Luke since their freshman year of high school. She knew the ins and outs of all three Hughes brothers if she was honest, never finding it weird or alarming. His family loved her, that she knew, but when Jack came home drunk one night and threw up on her shoes, she accepted her role in the family.
“Jack you first, come on.”
She continued running a hand through her boyfriend’s curls as she gazed at the older boy on the couch. He finally sat up, giving her an annoyed look, but she only rolled her eyes and pointed to the bathroom. She could keep Luke occupied for another 20 minutes, “Hi baby.”
Luke’s eyes were closed as his head laid on her shoulder, he mumbled something incoherently and he just sighed. She untangled her fingers from his hair and started to pull off his jacket, he whined at the loss of contact but allowed her to continue her actions. She took his jacket to his room and hung it up before walking back into the kitchen and checking on the pasta.
Luke, despite being tired and his body being worn, he got up and made his way over to her in order to wrap his arms around her waist and dig his head into the crook of her neck, inhaling her fading scent. She smiled slightly, removing her one hand from the side of the pan to place on top of Luke’s, continuing to stir with the other.
It was silent up until Jack came back, who plopped onto the chair his brother had previously sat in. She looked over at him and smiled, “Do you guys want to eat in the kitchen or in the living room? We could put a movie on?”
The two nodded and made their way over to the living room as she finished plating the food and bringing it over to them, placing the plates into their laps. They each let out simultaneous soft thank yous before eating. They chose a random movie and watched it as y/n cleaned the kitchen and finished doing some laundry that had been pushed to the side.
She felt bad for both of them, both for different reasons but some the same. Mostly because of how the team was performing this year, the way that they couldn’t keep everyone off injured reserve. Yet, for Luke, it felt different. She felt more or less worried about him than bad for him. He had expectations to live up to, people to live up to, and she knew his mind all too well. She knew what he was thinking, that he wasn’t good enough.
And it wasn’t just him that thought that. They both knew about the tweets that were in response to people's comments under articles, the articles themselves about how Luke wasn’t as good as his brothers, wasn’t as good as he should be, wasn’t as good as people made him out to be. It was what Luke thought about the most.
There was clanging from the living room and then a crash. She immediately made her way out of the bedroom and looked in between Jack, who was still on the couch, the shattered plate on the floor, and Luke, who was standing in the hallway. His face looked conflicted but it morphed into one of fear and sadness.
“Hey, hey, what happened?”
“I-” Luke couldn’t bring himself to talk, both terrified and still exhausted from the game.
On the other hand, y/n’s face was calm and Jack’s face was sad with a hint of anger in his eyes. Anger towards John and Kevin for leaving the team with four defensemen, anger towards Travis for making Luke play that long, anger towards himself for not checking in on his brother enough, and anger towards the Rangers.
“Luke, it’s okay. No one’s mad at you for dropping the plate.” Jack’s voice was soft as he stood up, slightly wobbling from his lack of balance.
The younger boy only shook his head, reaching a hand out to lean against the wall. Y/n moved forward and wrapped her arms around Luke who then slowly sank to the ground. Her left hand was placed against his head, keeping it against her chest as her right arm wrapped around him. Luke started crying, soft sobs escaping his mouth.
She looked at Jack who took the hint to walk back into his bedroom. As soon as he left, Luke voiced his thoughts, “I’m tired. I’m so tired, y/n.”
The way his voice broke almost made her choke on a sob. She bit her lip to keep her tears at bay, refusing to let Luke know how she was feeling right now. She tangled her fingers in his hair, Luke allowing the movement to calm him down a little. His harsh sobs turned into soft sniffles in a matter of minutes. She was the only one who could soothe him like this besides his mom.
Lifting his head, he dug it back into the crook of her neck. She kissed his head and continued to run her fingers through his curls like she had done earlier, using her other hand to rub circles on his back. Ten minutes had passed and she looked over at the shattered glass a few feet away from her. Her legs had started to cramp from being in the position for so long and the added weight of Luke on them made it a little worse.
“How about you go take a shower while I clean the plate, okay?”
He pulled away from her and nodded his head slightly. She aided him in standing up and watched as he made his way to the bathroom to shower. Once the door closed, she made quick work of cleaning up the mess. After she was done, she went over and knocked on Jack’s bedroom door, “Hey.”
Jack snapped his head up in surprise, “Hi.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Jack, I’ve known you for 7 years. What’s wrong?” She sat on the edge of his bed, her hands underneath her.
“I feel bad. I mean I was so excited for Luke to come to play with me but for some reason, I feel guilty. I don’t know. It just feels like I should do more for him. I didn’t want to bring up the comments, I see them too, you know.”
Her heart warmed at the words, at Jack being so worried about his little brother. She smiled a little before looking at him, “He loves you, Jack. More than you know. I cannot tell you the number of times he calls me and is like ‘Jack this’ and ‘Jack that’. You and Quinn are his idols, it’s hard to not notice that. He is so appreciative of you. And he knows there is nothing you can do about the comments that people make, it’s not your fault.”
Jack teared up a little but smiled at her, “Thank you.”
“Of course. Now come on, give me a hug.”
Jack leaned over from his spot on the bed and hugged her, “Can I say I love you or is that too weird?”
“Considering, I am betting on you becoming my sister-in-law, it’s not weird. I love you too, y/n/n.”
She heard a door close from down the hall and she pulled away and waved goodbye to Jack, making her way to her boyfriend’s room. When she walked in, Luke was lying on his bed, cuddling a pillow on his phone. She smiled at him and walked over to sit down, “Hi baby.”
He looked up at her and for the first time that night, he smiled. He reached out for her and she made herself comfortable on the bed, Luke wrapping his arms around her. In that moment, Luke was so grateful for her and all that she had done for him not only tonight but in the past seven years. She had been there for him through everything and that meant the absolute world to him.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, Luke. And I am so so so so proud of you for tonight.”
His smile was small but genuine, “Now go to bed.”
She kissed his forehead and the two wasted no time in falling asleep.

1. matchmaking - the day y/n and luke met
She had been dragged out of her dorm by her roommate, she had no desire to go be surrounded by a bunch of people. Nonetheless, she couldn’t really pass up the opportunity to go watch college hockey, it was too intriguing.
So there she was, standing in Yost Arena, in one of her friend’s old Michigan shirts from when Bella’s brother went there. They stood excitedly amongst the rest of their friends and other students who had found their place around them, watching as the team celebrated the goal they had just scored.
It was only halfway through the second period that her mind put together that the guy’s name she was wearing across her back was the same as one of the player’s names on the team. She furrowed her eyebrows as she scrolled through her phone, looking over the roster.
She was quick to put Luke’s name into Instagram, navigating her way to Quinn’s eventually, finally realizing that he went there at the same time Bella’s brother had. It was probably just a weird coincidence, it didn’t mean anything. But she wouldn’t put it past Bella to be planning something. It was just who she was.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
After the game, their group of friends lingered in the hallway waiting for the hockey players to emerge from the locker room. It was never brought to her attention that so many of her friends had known some of the guys on the team, mostly because she was never all that curious to ask.
She and Bella strayed from the group, huddling against the wall and talking about something random when a group of 5 or more players came out, laughing about something one of them had said. When her gaze found a familiar face, she cocked her head to the side trying to figure out where she had seemed him before. It didn’t take long for it took click, causing her to go still in shock, so her Instagram stalking ‘skills’ did prove to be useful.
She was snapped out of her trance when Bella jumped, an arm now thrown over her shoulders. The two of them looked up in sync, now staring at Owen who stood taller than the two of them, “Hey.”
Y/n looked between the two of them confusedly before the girl opposite of her smiled, “Y/n/n, this is my boyfriend, Owen, and Owen this is my best friend y/n!”
The boy nodded and smiled, “Nice to finally put a face to the name Bella brings up every time we hang out.”
Y/n quirked an eyebrow looking over at her friend, “Wow, I’ve never had someone talk so much about me.”
“I’m pretty sure she’s more in love with you than she is with me.” Bella hit Owen across the chest before giving him a look.
He glanced down at her before what seemed like recognition flashed in his eyes, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He turned to look over his shoulder, eyes trying to find a familiar lanky figure, “Oh right. Luke c’mere!”
To the side of them, the rest of y/n and Bella’s friends stood next to the four remaining hockey players, one snapping his head up to look at the trio. He excused himself from the group before making his way over to them, smiling awkwardly, “Hey.”
“So you’ve met Bella,” Owen gestured to his girlfriend who grinned and waved.
Luke nodded his head, his nervous smile still plastered on his face as he shoved his hands in his pockets. Before Owen could get another word out, Bella’s excited voice filled their ears, “And this is my best friend, y/n!”
Said girl made eye contact with the boy, her cheeks flushing, “Hi.”
“Hi.”
An uncomfortable silence fell around them before Bella once again made her presence known, “Well Owen and I have a reservation to get to so we’ll see you later.”
“But I thought we were-”
“Bye, y/n/n!” The two stumbled down the hallway and only got so far before they let out amused giggles.
The rest of their friends had already left, leaving as soon as Luke had made his departure from the group. So now, y/n stood next to him, embarrassed by the situation the two had been shoved into. For a moment, they just kept stealing glances at each other before Luke spoke, “Do you want to get some food? I mean we don’t have to but I just thought since they kind of left us that you-”
She cut him off with a laugh, “Sure.”
The two started making their way down the hallway, making small talk about the most generic things. When they reached the door, Luke opened it and ushered her through, y/n’s small ‘thank you’ making its way to his ears.
As he stepped out into the parking lot, the October air making its way through his jacket, his eyes trained on the letters on the back of her shirt, “Where’d you get that shirt?”
She stopped briefly, remembering what exactly was on her back before she spoke, “Oh uh Bella’s brother went here when yours did and she just stole this shirt from him and then gave it to me to wear tonight.”
He nodded, and the two of them walked down through the parking lot toward his car. Silence fell around them once again, a chill making its way up y/n’s spine. She shuddered, pulling the sleeves of her shirt around her and before crossing them over her chest. Luke furrowed his eyebrows as he shrugged off his jacket and handed it to her, “Here.”
“Oh I’m fine, thank you though.”
“Hah as if, take it.”
Reluctance shone in her eyes but the stubbornness that shone in his was too heavy to ignore, so she took it from him and wrapped it around herself, sighing at the newfound warmth it brought her. They reached his car only seconds later, Luke opening the passenger side door, waiting for her to climb in.
Once she was, he closed it, walked over to the driver’s side to get in himself, turned the car on, and put the heat on full blast before pulling out of the parking lot and starting to drive through campus.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
Dinner came and went, the two of them stopping at one of the local restaurants in town before he dropped her back off at her dorm room. When he put the car in park, the two of them stole glances at each other, breaking out in a laugh once their gazes met.
“Thank you… for dinner.”
Luke nodded, “Yeah ‘course.”
She slowly opened the door, stopping to hand him his jacket that he had loaned her earlier. He smiled as their hands brushed, taking the fabric into his hand knowing full well that as soon as she was gone he would just throw it haphazardly in the backseat.
“I um-” he started, stammering over his words as he tried to figure out what he wanted to say. A beat passed and he let out a breath before locking eyes with her, “Do you want to hang out sometime?”
Heat rushed to her cheeks despite being out in the cold, she blinked a few times before nodding, unable to keep the grin off her face, “Yeah. I’d love to.”Luke watched her walk to her dorm, studying each letter of his last name splayed on her back. While it was his name and his number, it wasn’t truly his. But he’d make it his mission to see his jersey on her, even if it took all the time in the world.

2. new year, new meaning - the first time y/n wears luke’s jersey
It had been almost a year since Luke and y/n had met, hanging out every waking moment they could. If Luke was somewhere cross-country, they would set time to FaceTime each other, giggling like middle schoolers as they talked.
But today would be the first time wearing Luke’s jersey… as his girlfriend. To say she was nervous was a complete understatement, not that she was worried Luke would make fun of her or anything, she knew he would do quite the opposite actually. Yet, the thought of other people even just thinking something about her doing it to get attention made her uncomfortable.
She toyed with the ends of her braids, staring at herself in the mirror of her shared dorm room. She was still rooming with Bella, who had been watching her from her bed since y/n had started getting ready, but the girl had certainly lost her enthusiasm for going to games with her boyfriend in Buffalo now.
She adjusted the baseball cap on her head before turning to look at her best friend, “Yes? No? I don’t know maybe I should change-”
“Y/n stop it,” Bella hopped off her bed, making her way over to the girl and placing her hands on her shoulders. “You look amazing, you look hot, if Luke doesn’t take you out after the game, I will.”
She let the tension release from her shoulders, taking a deep breath before nodding, “Yeah… okay.”
The two drove to the arena, making comments here and there about how the team would do this year, whether Luke would be called up or not this year, how Owen was adjusting to his life in Buffalo, etc. They walked into Yost Arena, hand in hand as they navigated their way to their seats.
She had been so in her head that they had gotten there about 10 minutes before the game started causing them to have to find their seats quickly. Y/n hadn’t seen Luke since yesterday, she had been too busy with classes to allow him to come over or to go over to his to see him, so she was left with not seeing him until after the game.
Throughout the whole game, her eyes were trained on her boyfriend, watching as he skated across the ice, took a few hits, and caused a few altercations with the opposing team. As the clock winded down, her thumb made its way to her mouth, biting at her nails as she tried to keep up with everything that was happening.
When Luke scored the game-winning goal, she was all but silent, screaming out how happy she was that not only they had won but he had been the reason they had. It made her buzz with excitement as they made their way down to the tunnel, exchanging a few words with some of the people they passed that they knew.
Her feet had started aching from standing too much, so she found comfort against the wall and pulled out her phone no doubt going to play Block Blast. She was too into the game to notice Luke standing above her, it took him to place his shoes right up against her for her to look up, a bright grin spreading across her face, “Lukey!”
She stood, going on her tiptoes in order to wrap her arms around his neck, “M’so proud of you.”
He buried his head into her neck, bending down to do so, as his arms snaked around her waist, bringing her as close as possible to him, “Thank you, baby. Think you’re my good luck charm.”
His hand shamelessly made its way down to her ass, giving it a soft pat before pulling away to stare at her. She blushed under his gaze and from his small action, leaning forward to rest her head against his chest. Y/n didn’t have to see Luke to know that he had a smug look on his face, lips most likely turned up into a smirk.
“You look good in my jersey, baby.” His hand rubbed circles on her back, trying to coax her to remove her head from the confines of his chest.
She mumbled a soft ‘thank you’, her arms now around his torso. He didn’t say anything more, just soaking in the moment with her, standing there in silence. He was one of the last ones to leave the locker room but by now he was sure all of his teammates had already left and the fans had all cleared out.
“C’mon, it's late. Let's get you to bed, hm?”
She nodded, finally pulling away and lacing her fingers with his as they walked out of the arena and towards his car.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
Luke laid behind y/n on his bed, toying with the end of her jersey, wrapping the fabric around his finger, “Did I tell you how good you looked in this?”
He tugged at it, making her look over at him, “Just briefly, I think, yes.”
“Briefly isn’t enough. You look beautiful, sweetheart.” He glanced up at her face just in time to see her look away and the pink flush on her cheeks.
He whined, “Don’t look away, wanna see my pretty girl.”
“You’re so needy.” She teased lightly but complied nonetheless, maneuvering so she was lying down beside him, facing him as he had wanted.
He moved his hand up to her face, brushing his fingers over her cheek. She fell asleep quickly after that, exhaustion catching up with her as soon as she lay down. He huffed out a laugh, moving to take her jersey off so she wouldn’t be uncomfortable while she slept.
He did his best to not look as he slipped his shirt over her head, not wanting to push a boundary that he wasn’t sure they were ready to cross yet. He changed himself, slipping on a pair of shorts and another random t-shirt he found lying around before crawling back into bed, the image of her in his jersey permanently engraved in his mind.

3. new jersey - her first new jersey devils game in her new jersey
Thanks to Jack, getting out to New York had been easy for her. With no classes on that Friday, she was able to fly out Thursday night, landing at almost midnight and heading to the hotel with Jack. Luke hadn’t questioned why his brother was leaving their apartment at 11, assuming that it was just some weird late-night craving that he needed to fulfill.
The next day she sat surrounded by the other wives and girlfriends of the Devils at UBS Arena watching as they faced the Isles. She had initially planned on going to one of their home games but this had been the first game she was able to attend and she couldn’t wait any longer to see her boyfriend play professional hockey.
Her streak of being a good luck charm at his game continued because he got his first goal of the season early into the second period. The cheers were loud around her and she wasn’t sure if it was her own cheering or if there actually were other people doing the same thing as her.
She looked down at what she was wearing, it was different to see the red fabric and the Devils logo staring back at her but she smiled as she thought about how far he had come since the two of them met. She was so unbelievably proud of her and she would trade anything in the world to see him as happy as he was.
Devils fans across the arena were beaming with excitement as they exited, Jack had just scored their overtime game-winning goal, and everyone, save for the Islanders fans, couldn’t have been happier.
She waited in the tunnel with some of the others like she had done countless times before back in Michigan. She played with the edge of her jersey as she rocked back and forth on her heels, making small conversations with those around her.
A loud voice caught her attention followed by a laugh, “Just walk out backwards! Trust me.”
“I don’t trust you that’s the problem.” She could recognize her boyfriend’s grumbled voice from a mile away, a grin appearing on her face at the annoyance that was ever so present in his tone.
“Okay okay stop. Now don’t turn around ‘till I say so.” Jack ran to hug y/n, giggling into her ear like he was about to pull the dumbest prank possible on his brother.
Luke turned when he was told to, his face looked more annoyed than she had thought it could be. He stared at his brother with an unamused look before his eyes drifted to his right, widening when he saw who was looking back at him, “Y/n/n?”
“What? Thought I would miss your first goal of the season. Never.”
His annoyed expression quickly turned around, making his way over to her to wrap her in a hug, “You’re here. Holy shit, how the fuck did you get here?’
“A plane.”
He rolled his eyes, “You know what I meant.”
“Didn’t have any classes and I wanted to see you. Jack picked me up from the airport last night, stayed in a hotel, and now I’m here.”
The rest of the group had left by now, allowing the two to have a moment to themselves. He pulled away, brushing a stray strand of hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear. His eyes glassed over as he stared at her, it hadn’t really been long since they had seen each other, maybe a month or two, but it had been awful without her.
“Lukey,” her voice was soft as she grabbed his hand, squeezing it with just as much gentleness, “Don’t cry, you dork.”
His laugh was wet, tears lacing it. He took his free hand to his face, wiping the few tears that had managed to escape his eyes. She smiled at him, “You haven’t even noticed what I’m wearing yet!”
At that, he blinks the remaining sadness from his eyes, moving them to trail over her outfit, “Turn around.”
She did as she was told, turning slightly so he could. He moved her hair out of the way, placing it over her shoulder as his fingers traced over each letter of his name and the ‘4’ and the ‘3’. He stepped closer, leaning down to kiss her neck and her jaw before turning her back around, “Didn’t think you could get any prettier, but you always find ways to prove me wrong.”
She kissed him, hand cupping the back of his neck to bring him down to her level. His hands found their way to her hips almost instantly, sinking into the kiss easily. Her fingers tangled in his curls, giving them a slight tug once the need to breathe overtook her senses.
Pulling away to rest her forehead against his, despite her having to go up on her toes, she moved her hand to cup his face. It took a few seconds before she spoke, still trying to catch her breath, “Proud of you, you know that?”
He nodded, “Yeah, I do.”She re-intertwined her fingers with his, swinging their hands back and forth slightly as they walked out of the arena together, making their way into the earlier chill of October in New York. If one thing was certain after today, it was that Luke would never get tired of his name sprawled across her back, or anywhere on her really. It was his favorite sight to see, one that would be in his mind forever. Plus, he couldn’t wait to make it her last name too.

Something about her made her stomach burn with an unfamiliar degree of jealousy, making her mind race with insecurities. They were out at a bar, some of the team, her, some of the other wags, and Luke. It was supposed to be a fun time, celebrating the Devils’ win, but the only fun she seemed to have was when she could tear her eyes away from where Luke was talking to a girl she didn’t know.
Usually, it wouldn’t have bothered her, him talking to a girl, but something about her made her feel uneasy. Something about the way she spoke with her hands, the smile she had on her face, the unmistakable sparkle in her eye, made her fight the urge to roll her eyes and cover herself up.
She watched as Luke replied to whatever she had said before she was pulled out of her thoughts, “What’re you guys doing for Christmas?”
Y/n’s eyes flickered over to Nicole’s, the jealousy and annoyance present in her tone, “I don’t know.”
Nicole’s eyes widened at the sound of her voice and y/n winced at the action, murmuring a ‘sorry’. She glanced over at Luke and the girl again before redirecting her gaze back to the woman, “Just- have an odd feeling.”
She followed her line of sight, her eyes landing on Luke and the other girl as well, “Oh.”
“It’s okay, I trust him. I just-“
“I get it,” Nicole shook her head, “Gut feelings.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
Luke could feel her stare on him the whole night, it was undeniable. He was trying to half-ass this conversation with the girl in front of him, nothing about it was interesting but he didn’t want to be rude. So he sucked it up, giving her a tight-lipped smile as she continued to ramble on about why she moved to New Jersey.
Honestly, Luke was surprised she hadn’t made her way over by him yet, stealing glances at her to see if he could see if something was wrong. Her eyes weren’t shining as they usually were, narrowed into a glare as she continued to watch the two of them. But the next time he looked her way, she was chatting to Nicole and he was grateful that she was now distracted.
He was able to remove himself from the conversation he wasn’t actively participating in a few minutes later, walking towards the table where she sat. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, leaning down and pressing a kiss to her temple, “Hey.”
He frowned when she barely so much as batted an eye up at him, continuing her conversation with Nicole. He squeezed her shoulder softly in an attempt to gain her attention, “Baby.”
This time, his eyes lit up as hers met his before responding to whatever question she was asked. He sighed, simply pulling out the empty chair beside her, taking a seat, and keeping his arm around her shoulders. Once the girl walked away, he leaned into her side, whispering in her ear, “You wanna go home?”
That caught her attention, looking at him fully as she nodded. He tangled his fingers in her hair, bringing her closer so he could leave a kiss on her head. He grabbed her coat, helping her put it on after they stood up, gripping her bag as they said goodbye to their friends.
Once they stepped outside, Luke tucked her into his large frame, adding an extra layer of warmth against the chill of the New Jersey air. She didn’t say anything, keeping her eyes forward as they walked towards his car. Now it wasn’t so much of the jealousy seeping into her mind but her lack of self-confidence.
She pulled her jacket tighter around her to cover herself up from anyone’s gaze more than to keep the cold from reaching her. If he noticed, he didn’t say anything, tightening his hold on her as they approached the car.
He opened the door for her, helping her settle into the seat before circling the car, climbing into the driver’s seat, and starting the car. The drive was silent, Luke’s hand resting comfortably on her thigh without any protest from y/n, only removing it to take turns.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
When they reached their apartment, y/n hopped out of the car with ease, walking into the apartment briskly to get out of the cold. Luke followed after her, locking the door and pulling out the keys for the door as he did so. They were quiet in the elevator as well, y/n fidgeting with her fingers on the ride up to their floor.
She was quick to shrug her jacket off as they entered the apartment, hanging it on the coat rack and making her way to their bedroom to change. Luke stayed in the living room, allowing her time to collect her thoughts and calm herself down like he knew she needed to do.
She changed into one of his t-shirts, letting out a sigh of relief once the fabric reached her mid-thigh. She slid on a pair of her sleep shorts, crawled into bed, and curled up in the sheets. Tears burned in her eyes as she thought about the events that happened not even thirty minutes ago, burying her head into the pillow and squeezing her eyes shut.
She shouldn’t have been this upset by her boyfriend talking to some girl, he was allowed to do that, just like she was allowed to talk to guys, and she scolded herself for the many excuses her brain came up with. She closed her eyes tighter in the hope sleep would take over her and Luke wouldn’t come in and make her talk about how she was feeling or what happened at the bar.
However, her luck seemed to fail her when she heard the door opening and his footsteps on the floor. She imagined him walking over, keeping her eyes closed to keep herself from looking at him. She felt the bed dip, her curiosity getting the best of her as her eyes fluttered open, immediately landing on Luke’s face, a small smile gracing his lips.
He reached out, running a hand through her hair, stopping once he got the ends to twist them around his fingers. He didn’t say anything, just repeating his actions over and over. It was a few minutes later when he peeled the covers back, eyes roaming over her face for any sight of sadness or being uncomfortable.
When he found the slightest bit of unhappiness in her eyes, he pulled her into his lap, her legs coming to rest on either side of him. He reached his hand up, brushing a stray piece of hair out of her face, tucking it gently behind her ear and giving her a soft smile, “What’s going on in that mind of yours, gorgeous?”
Y/n didn’t say anything, simply shrugging as she tried to push everything she was feeling down and her thoughts to the back of her mind. He frowned at her nonverbal response, hands coming to rest on her thighs, thumbs moving in small circles with a slight pressure.
He leaned his head forward, resting his forehead against hers, He let out a small sigh before speaking, “Talk to me, pretty girl. We both know it’s not good for you to keep your emotions bottled up, especially when it’s something like this.”
She bit her lip and he sighed again, removing one of his hands from her thigh to tug her lip free from in between her teeth, pecking her lips before he placed his hand back to where it originally was. He continued his previous movements, hands subconsciously moving further up her leg in the process.
“Just- got jealous.”
He smirked, “Well I know that.” His face softened again once he saw the small flicker of annoyance in her eyes, “You’re the only one I want, sweet girl. No one else could ever compare to you.”
“But-”
“No, you’re the only one for me. Nothing is going to change that, yeah?”
She gave in, feeling the tension release from her body as Luke pulled her closer, her head resting against his shoulder as she buried her head into the crook of his neck. He placed a kiss on her head, hands still moving up and down against her thighs.
“You look good in my shirt.” He teased softly, gripping the hem of the shirt and tugging on it, “Should wear it more often.”
“I wear it every night to bed,” she argued back, voice muffled.
He shrugged, her head moving at the motion. She pulled back and looked at him, smiling for the first time since they left the arena. He grinned back at her, hand coming up to tangle in her hair again, bringing her close so he could kiss her.
She let out a small squeak in surprise but melted in the kiss shortly afterward, her arms wrapping around his neck. His other hand snaked around her waist, pulling her even closer to him. She pulled away, forehead against his as she attempted to catch her breath.
“You better now, pretty girl?”
“Yeah.”
“Let’s get you to bed then, probably wore yourself out with all those useless thoughts.”
He lifted her off her lap, laying her back down and crawling underneath the comforters next to her. His arm circled her waist again, pulling her flush against his chest, kissing her head again, “Night, baby. Love you so much, never gonna let you go.”
She blushed, burying her head further into his chest, “Love you too.”

She expected this to happen, the pounding in her head, the 20 tabs open on her computer, the dozens of resource articles and research strewn about in her room, the five packets of review guides sitting in a stack on her desk, the half drank cup of coffee, and the tears springing in her eyes. The earbuds in her ears played nothing and the sensation began to irritate her, practically ripping them from her ears and throwing them across the room to somewhere she wouldn’t be able to find again.
She could hear voices in the living room, just outside her closed bedroom door. They were laughing about something, what it was she had no idea. Her three roommates all had presentations tomorrow and that was it, no more studying, no more writing, they were done. She, however, still had three papers to write and two exams to take. She had regretted her decision to take this many classes this semester but she was preparing herself for her future.
She had gone to stand up, feeling dizzy immediately as her feet planted flat on the floor. She held a hand to the wall, bracing herself from toppling over. She blinked a few times, trying to clear the blurry sight of tears, dehydration, and lack of nutrition. She knew people would be worried about her if they were to see her like this, her hair matted and pulled into a bun as best as she could, and mascara dried on her face that highlighted the dark circles and bags under her eyes. She was wearing Luke’s sweatshirt, the Devils logo plastered over it in the center, mocking her, reminding her that her boyfriend was 603 miles away from her.
At the thought, she allowed herself to tear up more, letting tear after tear fall. There wasn’t much she could do, he was in the middle of a game right now. When she realized he had a game, she turned it on and watched with a soft smile whenever he would show up on the TV. Despite knowing the fact that he would not answer his phone, she called him, hoping to just hear his voice through his voicemail.
When his voice reached her ears, she could feel some of the tension release from her body. However, the feeling was short-lived as the beep from the end of his voicemail was heard. She didn’t leave a message, she just hung up and watched the remainder of the second period. When the horn blarred in the arena and through the tv speakers, she shut off the screen and returned to work, making her head hurt more.
She didn’t notice the multiple attempts Luke had made to call her, her phone having died 20 minutes prior when she was writing her essay. She had put her headphones on, canceling most noise from the apartment. She had been ripping off post-it notes after post-it notes, scrambling to write down as many ideas as her brain could process.
Meanwhile, Luke had been minorly, no majorly, freaking out. She would never call him if he was at a game, not even if it was super important. He could feel himself start to sweat again as he rushed to put his suit jacket on, wiggling his feet into his shoes. He had gone home by himself, not feeling the need to celebrate when his girl could be suffocating 603 miles away from him.
Ever since they’ve known each other, Luke has known about y/n’s tendencies to throw herself into her school work. He remembers the first time he saw her during exam season. It was the end of their freshman fall term, they had been dating for four months at the time. They had just gotten back from their games in Ohio, he was exhausted from the trip and their 6-1 loss following their win the previous day. All he had wanted to do was go over to her dorm and lay in bed with her.
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
He knocked on the door, waiting for an answer but nothing came. He felt saddened and knocked again. He received the same answer, none. He turned around and slid down the wood door, hitting the ground with a thud. He put his hands on his head as he waited, kicking his bag to the side. It was only then he heard the footsteps come rushing down the hallway and looked up to see her. She had her backpack that looked as if it weighed 10 pounds, she was clutching five books in her arms and a coffee cup rested on top of them. She had been mumbling when she noticed him and her eyes lit up, “Hi!”
“Hi pretty girl, whatcha doing?”
“Studying.”
He looked at the way her eyes were hidden by the circles underneath them and frowned. He reached out to grab the books from her grasp and she gratefully accepted the offer, going straight to dig the keys out of her bag, “How were the games? Did you guys win?”
He felt heartbroken and confused, she always watched his games when they went away. She would always be the one to point out his goal or an assist that he got, sometimes she even pointed out if Dylan, Mackie, Ethan, or even Owen got a goal. He watched as she pushed the door open, removing her hand from her side to run it through her hair, “You didn’t watch?”
She turned to him, dropping her bag on the ground and reaching out for her books, “No, I was studying. Sorry, Lu.”
Studying? At that time? He did nothing but let her take the books, watching as she started to clean up her dorm. It was only then that he had noticed the state her dorm was in. There were empty boxes scattering the floor, paper plates and bowls on any surface possible, and some of her clothes were mixed in with her roommate’s, it was a mess, to say the least. He made no effort to say anything about it, though.
She cleaned as much as she could in a matter of five minutes, looking at him with a small smile on her face, “I’m sorry I didn’t watch. I was going to watch the highlights when I got back tonight.”
“Back from?”
“Library. I think I’m starting to become a regular for everyone who works there.”
The thought of her being a regular was somewhat concerning to him, “How often have you been going?”
His voice was a mixture of stern and worried, his eyes somewhat squinted in a glare. She looked as if she had committed a crime at the tone of his voice, “Every day… from the time class was over until they closed.”
His eyes widened, “Jesus y/n.”
“I’m sorry, I just wanted to study. I need to do well.”
“I understand that but you can’t work yourself to the brink of death.” He grabbed the coffee out of her hand and emptied it into the sink, getting rid of the cup afterward.
She whined at the motion, watching him in horror as if he just hit a bird with his car. He walked back over to her and placed his hands on her shoulders, “Tomorrow you are not going to touch a single book, I won’t even let you touch your computer.”
“But-”
“Nuh-uh, nope. No computer, no books, no papers, no anything school-related. We are going to stay in your bed and watch movies all day and eat properly.”
“I eat properly!” She exclaimed in offense.
He gave her a look that said all the different, “Sure. Now I can only hope you still have some of my clothes here somewhere because I do not want to talk to my dorm right now.”
She pointed in embarrassment to one of her drawers, “In there.”
He kissed her forehead and grabbed the clothes before heading for the bathroom, “I’ll be back and I better not see you do any work when I get back.”
She nodded but as soon as he left she ran to her backpack and grabbed her computer. She rushed to finish the last two paragraphs of her essay before he got back but luck was not on her side as she was halfway through her last paragraph and the doorknob turned. She had been so focused on writing that she didn’t care that he entered, “Just let me finish my last paragraph.”
He sighed, dropping his clothes into her laundry basket. He walked back to her bed and looked at her, “Last paragraph?”
“Mhm.” She nodded and scooted over so Luke could sit next to her, “Fine. I don’t want you to lose your train of thought.”
She beamed up at him and kissed his cheek before returning to her work.
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
Ever since then, he had been careful with how much he left her alone in exam season. He always called on road trips, always went to the library with her to make sure she didn’t overwork herself, always made sure she was eating properly and always made sure that she was okay. But now being 603 miles it was hard to do that for her.
Luke was packing a bag as fast as he could, looking at his laptop for the earliest flight out of there which wasn’t until early the next morning, leaving at 7 and not arriving until 9. Then he would have to wait to get a car and do a 30-minute drive to Ann Arbor. He groaned at the time and went to throw something, at that point he could drive there and be there before getting a plane but he was in no state to drive.
He continued to try and call her for 30 minutes, on the brink of giving up at that point. Her phone was still dead and she had yet to realize it. She had music playing through her earbuds attached to her computer, typing about something that she considered stupid and unnecessary. She only took breaks to take a sip of coffee or to groan and throw her head back in exhaustion and frustration.
Luke threw his phone on the bed, running his hands down his face, falling asleep not even five minutes later. Y/n was the same way, she closed her laptop as she finished her last sentence, finally allowing herself to take a break. She got up to go make a burrito in the kitchen, waving to her friends who were also still awake at the time.
She went to turn her phone on and that was when she realized the lack of battery it had. She shrugged it off and put it down on her nightstand before walking back out to eat and finish watching the movie with her roommates.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
She didn’t go to bed until almost three in the morning despite finishing the movie four hours ago. Once they finished, she looked at the piles of paper and study guides she still had to do and sighed. Deciding that her first class wasn’t until noon, she could easily get done with one or two study guides or an essay in three.
She curled up on her bed when she was done and wrapped the blankets around her tightly. When she woke up and went to look at her phone and saw a tweet from Amanda from an hour ago, “Luke is not at morning practice due to personal reasons. Should expect him back for Saturday’s game in Columbus.”
She immediately woke up at the fact, looking back at her other notifications. There must’ve been at least a dozen missed calls from Luke and 15 text messages. She could only think about the worst, if he had gotten hurt but just didn’t want to tell someone, if he had been so drunk that he couldn’t think straight, if he had a panic attack last night. Her thoughts raced but halted when there was a knock on the door.
She went out to the living room, still clad in her sweats from the previous night. Her friends must’ve either already left or were still sleeping. She walked to the door, peeking through the peephole and gasping. She all but ripped the door open, “Lukey?”
He smiled when he saw her, immediately feeling better. Her eyes were still the same from the first time he had experienced her like this and he knew there would probably be a coffee pot brewing in the next few minutes, but he was here now and that was a wave of relief, “What are you doing here?”
“You weren’t answering my calls and I know you were studying last night so you probably wouldn’t have answered them anyway. But when I saw you called during the game I got worried because you never call. And I just wanted to make sure you were okay and that you weren’t overworking yourself but I can tell that you are.”
She frowned at his words but also felt butterflies in her stomach at the thought of him flying out just because he wanted to ensure she was okay. She stepped aside to let him in and then led him to her bedroom. It was cleaner than what he had witnessed in the past years.
“You can’t just fly out every time you think I’m overworking myself, Luke.”
“I know but I wasn’t thinking. I was worried, really worried.” He held her hand, playing with her fingers as a form of comfort, “How long were you up to last night?”
She hesitated before responding, “3…”
He only sighed and tugged her closer to the bed so they could lay down, “Luke I have class in two hours.”
“I know but just for a little bit, and then I’ll take you to class.”
“You still know you’re way around campus?”
“Did I ever know my way around campus?”
She shook her head and laughed, “No.”
He smiled at her laugh, “You do realize I’m only going to be allowing you to rest while I’m here right?”
“But I have one more essay to finish.”
He glared at her, “Fine, but after that, you are going to be right here, in my arms, and not thinking about school at all.”
“Deal.” He kissed her before allowing her to get up and get ready for class. They both walked on campus to her class with the same thought, grateful that Luke had come to see her. Even with being 603 miles away from each other, they would do anything to be there for one another.

“Luke c’mon! We have to go, we’re already late.”
She bounced on her feet as she waited to hear the footsteps of her boyfriend, every passing second felt like an eternity. She flicked her eyes down to her watch, groaning at the time it displayed. They were supposed to have left over half an hour ago, and for once it wasn’t her fault that her boyfriend’s family was sitting around their house waiting for them to arrive.
“Luke, I swear if you’re not out here in 30 seconds I’m going to lose my shit!”
And exactly 30 seconds later she heard the footsteps of her boyfriend climbing down the stairs, pulling his sweater on that was no doubt what she had laid out for him the night before. He jumped off the last step, ruffling his hand through his hair, flashing her a smile, “I’m ready.”
She only stared at him, anger shining in her eyes. Luke simply walked over and placed a kiss on her cheek, giving her an innocent look, “Don’t be mad at me.”
“We were supposed to leave 30 minutes ago, probably more now, and you’re over here taking your sweet ass fucking time-”
“Baby calm down, look at me,” He placed his hands on her arms, looking down at her with a comforting smile, “Everything's going to be okay. They’re not going to be mad at you, they’re not going to be mad at all. Well, maybe my mom will be but definitely not at you. Take a deep breath, alright?”
She sighed and ran a shaky hand over her coat, “Fine, but I’m still mad because I have to wear this,” she pulled on her red turtleneck, “because someone couldn’t keep their hands to themselves.”
Luke’s boyish grin made its way onto his face as he slipped his new sneakers on, moving to open the door for her, “M’lady.”
She stepped through the doorway, making her way down the hallway as Luke trailed behind her, easily catching up to throw an arm around her shoulder and place a kiss on her temple. She softened slightly and looked up at him, a small smile gracing her lips.
Maybe she was over-stressing just a little bit. It would be her and Luke’s ‘second’ Christmas together, but only her first with his family and it was getting to her head. She had met his family plenty of times before, even spending the summer at the lake house, and spending countless nights at Luke’s old apartment with Jack before he moved in with her. But something about the Christmas energy made her nervous, and something always seemed to go wrong when you put Luke Hughes, y/n y/l/n, and the Christmas spirit together.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
The car ride to the Hughes’ house was quick and familiar, y/n watching the snow fall with nothing short of amusement and nervousness. Luke’s hand rested on her thigh, emanating a comforting feeling and a warmth that she could only associate with him.
She glanced over at him, watching as he removed his hand from her thigh to make the turn down his parents’ street. He was dressed in one of her favorite sweaters of his, it was a nice dark but muted blue that she always loved on him and the collar of his white dress shirt folded over the neckline. His legs were adorned with one of the many pairs of black jeans he owned and his favorite pair of new white sneakers on his feet.
Luke looked over at her, a smirk on his face once he caught her staring, her cheeks flushed a deep shade of red, but thankfully the darkness that settled at only 4:00 pm covered it well. He held out his hand, making a small gesture to get her to place hers in his. Once she did, he brought it up to his mouth and kissed it, “Whatcha lookin’ at pretty girl?”
“You.” Y/n replied in a murmur, curling up in the car seat as best as she could, “I did a good job at picking out your outfit.”
“‘Course you did, why do you think I let you?”
She only blushed more at his response, going back to look out the window just in time to see Ellen and Jim’s house come into view. A new wave of nerves settled over her as they pulled into the driveway. She felt Luke’s hand squeeze hers as he turned the car off, shifting to look at her.
Y/n looked over at him and smiled before glancing in the back seat. Her eyes widened as she saw the lack of her favorite Christmas dish, “Luke!”
“What? What’s wrong?”
“We forgot the pie.” She groaned, sitting back in her seat and throwing her head back against the headrest, “Fucking hell.”
“Y/n/n it’s okay, they’re not gonna-”
“That’s not the point Luke. I promised your mom I would bring something and now I forgot it.”
Luke’s face settled into a pout at the disappointment that tainted her face. He reached for her hand again, clutching it between both of his, allowing his thumb to rub over her knuckles, “Baby, listen, please. I know how well you wanted today to be, how perfect you wanted it to be. And I understand that them not being mad isn’t the problem.
“But they love you, probably more than me. They’re not going to be upset because you were having to deal with your childish boyfriend.”
She glanced over at his teasing tone, a huge smile on his face once he saw her lips turn up. She only let out a small ‘humph’ before responding, “You’re always making dumb jokes at the most inappropriate times.”
“I’m just trying to get my girl to smile, is that such a crime these days?”
“I suppose not, but you still have to make it up to me.”
“And how do you propose I do that?” A mischievous glint lit in his eye as he leaned closer to her.
“I don’t know.” She murmured quietly before replicating his actions, meeting his lips over the center console.
Luke grinned into the kiss before pulling away and leaving a small kiss on her forehead, “Let’s go, yeah?”
She nodded as she pulled away, climbing out of the car. She pulled her coat tighter around her, watching as Luke opened the trunk and grabbed the presents, stacking them on top of each other.
“Be careful Lukas, you know what happened last year.”
He rolled his eyes, making his way up the front steps after slamming the trunk closed. He knocked on the front door just as y/n walked up beside him, looping her arm through his.
Soon, the door opened and Jim stood in the entry of the house, “Hey you two.”
“Hi, Mr. Hughes!”
Jim took the presents from his youngest son, before gesturing them into the house, “How many times have Ellen and I told you to just call us by our names, Y/n?”
A sheepish grin made her way to her face, stepping inside of the Hughes’ house, and immediately she was met with the comforting atmosphere of the home. She moved to slip off her boots, but Luke’s hand placed on her lower back stopped her, “I got you.”
This only made her face flush more as Luke knelt down and unzipped her boots, sliding them off with ease. Her nervousness didn’t falter, however, slightly stumbling as Luke pulled her into the kitchen where his mom stood, “Hi momma.”
Ellen looked up from what she was doing, smiling much like him, “Hi! Oh, Luke why’d make the poor girl wait to be here? Probably stressed her out a ton.” She pulled her son into a hug, squeezing him tightly as she pestered him.
As she pulled away, she turned her attention to his girlfriend, her smile getting even wider if that was possible, “Hello sweetheart. Thank you so much for coming, we’re so happy to have you.”
Y/n hugged her back, “Thank you for having me! And you’re right, Luke did make me stress.”
The woman only briefly pulled away to swat at her son’s arm, who held his hands up in surrender before making his way over to where his brothers were, whatever that may have been. Ellen finally pulled out of the hug to continue working on the mashed potatoes.
The girl raised up on her toes as a nervous habit, “Do you need any help?”
“If you want to! You can start setting the table if you wish, dear.”
As she grabbed the plates and started setting the table, she released a small sigh before speaking up, “Also, I may have sort of forgotten the pie. I had it in the fridge and then I just got so flustered before we left that I forgot it.”
“Oh honey, it’s okay. I made extra dessert anyways because Jack always eats all of it.”
“I do not. That is extremely hurtful.” Jack walked into the kitchen, hand brushing an invisible piece of fuzz off his shirt, “Quinn helps too.”
He wrapped an arm around y/n’s shoulders, bringing her into a side hug, “And nice to see you y/n/n. Good job at dressing Luke.”
She couldn’t help but laugh at his words, a small smirk playing on her lips, “I do try to make sure my boyfriend is dressed nicely. It seems you don’t have anyone to help you.”
He scoffed playfully, “I am wounded. You are supposed to be on my side here too.”
“If you’re going to be in the kitchen, you are going to be helping. Help y/n set the plates- Don’t whine at me, Jack.”
He grumbled, taking a stack of forks into his hands and placing them on the side of the plates.
“Forks go on the left, Jacky. Knives go on the right, ” Y/n teased, now placing napkins on top of each plate, laughing as she heard another annoyed groan from him and watched his eyes roll.

After a while, dinner was nearing ready, y/n having spent most of the time in the kitchen talking with Ellen and helping out when she could. She wiped her hands on her skirt, trying to rid herself of the sweat that clung to them.
“I’m just going to run to the bathroom quickly if that’s okay?”
Ellen laughed, “You don’t need to ask to go to the bathroom, hon. Just go, I’ll be fine here.”
She blushed, another wave of embarrassment washed over her as she took in her words, “Right.”
She started walking out of the kitchen, scolding herself softly at her actions, stop embarrassing yourself. She froze halfway out of the kitchen, backtracking once she realized she didn’t actually know where the bathroom was, “Mrs- Ellen? Where exactly is-”
“Down the hall and to your left, baby.” A hand fell on her shoulder and a kiss was placed on her temple.
She turned to look at who it was, grinning when she saw the familiar face of her boyfriend, a lopsided grin that practically matched her own on his face. He kissed her head again, wrapping her up in a hug. He hadn’t seen her since they arrived, catching up with his dad and oldest brother in the living room as they watched whatever sports game was on.
“Missed you.” He murmured into her ear, squeezing her a little tighter afterward.
“We’ve only been separated for what? 40 minutes?”
“Doesn’t matter, still missed you.”
They stayed like that for a minute before she reminded him softly that she had to go to the bathroom. He pulled away and walked over to his mom, starting up a conversation about something she had no clue about. She was already heading out of the kitchen and down the hallway when she heard them talk.
She got halfway to the bathroom, looking down at her feet as she thought to herself, when her head knocked against something, groaning in pain, “Mother fucker-” She blinked the tears away that stung in her eyes, clutching her head.
Once the tears were cleared enough that she could see, she saw Jack standing there, mirroring her actions with a hand to his head. He had been just heading out of the bathroom when it happened, thoughts also racing in his mind causing him to not look where he was going when he ran into her, heads meeting.
“Fucking hell that hurt.” He exclaimed, rubbing at the spot on his forehead that took most of the impact.
They didn’t say anything for a few minutes, just trying to ease their rapidly growing headaches. Once they both got it calmed down enough, they stared at each other before letting out laughs of amusement, “We really need to pay better attention to where we’re walking huh?”
“Yeah, I don’t need everyone to stare at my forehead and then explain that the Jack Hughes caused the bump.”
He ushered her forehead, planning to get him and y/n ice packs from the freezer, but when she took a step, black dots clouded at the edge of her vision causing her to stumble, just barely catching herself against the wall. She heard Jack’s curse, leaning into him as an arm came around her waist, “You okay?”
“Dizzy.” She murmured back, closing her eyes and opening them again, hopes of clearing her fuzzy vision failing.
“Hold on. Luke!”
Y/n winced at Jack’s yell, pain worsening in her head. She could only give a soft nod of acknowledgment at his whispered apology, holding onto him tighter as she felt the overwhelming dizzy feeling wash over her.
Luke came walking out of the kitchen, eyes drifting down the hallway, “What’re you yelling for?”
His gaze fell upon his brother and girlfriend, huddled together against a wall, a worried expression on the former and a pained one on the other, “What happened? Is she okay?”
He walked briskly to get to the two, immediately taking his girlfriend into his arms, pressing multiple soft kisses to her head, and rubbing her arm up and down, “What’s going on?”
“We knocked our heads together, was going to get us ice packs when she stumbled. Said she felt dizzy.”
“I’m fine, just dizzy like he said.”
Luke shook his head, tucking her into his side safely, walking them back to the kitchen to sit down, “Let’s get you some ice, sweet girl, c’mon.”
He sat her down on a chair, brushing the hair away from her face. He heard Jack mumble something to their mom but his focus was solely on his girlfriend, cupping her face and looking over her head. She winced as his thumb brushed over the point of impact, shaking her head slightly at his apology.
There was a tap on Luke’s shoulder, Ellen now standing behind him with an ice pack wrapped in a towel in her hand, “Here. Put this on her forehead for ten minutes and then take it off.”
He nodded, taking the ice pack from her and placing it gently on y/n’s forehead. Ellen smiled softly before switching her gaze to the girl, “How’re you doing?”
“Could be worse,” she murmured, blinking slowly to clear her vision again. “Has to be the first time I’ve knocked heads with someone this hard.”
“That’s just because Jack has a big head.” A new voice entered the room and as best as she could, she moved her eyes to find the third Hughes brother.
“I do not!”
“Do too!”
“Do not!”
“Would you shut up?” Luke asked exasperated, pressing the ice pack a little harder into his girlfriend’s head as she winced from the noise.
“Sorry.” The two murmured.
“S’okay. Just fight quieter please if you’re going to fight.” She spoke up, leaning into the cold compress.
They nodded taking their seats at the table as they watched their younger brother and his girlfriend. Luke slowly took the icepack away from her head, placing it on the ground next to her chair. He moved the hair that had fallen back into her face, tucking it behind her ear, “You feeling better?”
“Yeah, I think so.”
He stands up, placing a kiss on her temple before sitting down next to her. The six of them start eating, easily falling into a conversation about hockey even after the multiple attempts Ellen had to end it. Y/n doesn’t mind it, her head is still pounding and even the thought of thinking about hockey is hurting it more.
She eats the majority of the food Luke has placed on her plate, taking her time and pushing it around slightly. She feels bad, she doesn’t want Ellen to feel like she doesn’t like the food, but it’s hard for her to focus right now and the knocking her head against Jack’s has left her more tired than she was when she arrived.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
After dinner, the six of them all clean up, or y/n tries to and then is scolded by Luke and his mom to sit on the chair or go into the living room and lie down. So that’s where she was when Luke came and found her, curled up on one side of the couch, her head resting on the armrest.
“Hey,” he kisses her softly, sitting down next to her, “You want to head out?”
She went to protest, saying they hadn’t opened their gifts or even had dessert yet but the idea of going home sounded really appealing, so she nodded, using Luke’s help to stand up. They walked back to the kitchen, informing everyone that they were going to be heading back home.
Luke grabbed the small platter of cookies and pieces of pie from his mom, y/n thanking her for him. They then made their way into the foyer where Luke helped her get her boots on, patting each thigh when he was done.
They said their goodbyes and then walked down the driveway with gifts and dessert in hand, placing them in the backseat before climbing into the car.
“You sure you’re okay, baby?”
“Yeah, I feel better after eating.”
“That’s good.”
He pulled out of the driveway, making their way down the street when he heard her voice, “Can’t believe the first Christmas with your family we show up late, we forget the pie and I knocked heads with your brother.”
He chuckled, “Honestly, did you expect anything less?”
She thought about it, and no she didn’t expect less. Ever since she and Luke met their Christmases had been less than ideal. When they met, she knocked into him at a coffee shop, successfully spilling coffee all over herself and Luke. On their first Christmas together, Luke broke his gift for her, and she had to deal with a flustered and anxious Luke. And now this.
“You’re right. I think we’re just destined to have dumbass Christmases.”
“Hey, at least it’ll be my turn next year. Let’s hope I don’t break something.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
He did indeed break something, his arm. He was setting up Christmas lights around their house, it would be the first one in it. He didn’t know how it happened, all he knew was that one moment he was connecting sets of lights and the next he was on the ground clutching his arm in pain. It was a long night in the ER.

Sabrina groaned slightly as she felt the other side of the bed dip, fluttering her eyes open in the process. She tugged the blankets tighter around her, eyes landing on Luke’s figure causing her to smile softly, “Hey Lukey.”
He returned her smile with one of his own, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, “Can I lay down?”
“Mhm.”
Luke didn't waste any time peeling back the covers and climbing into her bed, letting her envelop him in her warmth. He rested his head against her chest, sighing in content, wrapping his arms around her. She pressed a kiss to his curls, murmuring, “Everything okay, sweetheart?”
“Yeah, just wanted you.”
He couldn’t help but grin cheekily when he heard her giggle, looking up at her and placing a kiss on her jaw. She met his gaze, leaning forward and resting her forehead on his. It wasn’t long before their lips connected, her hands immediately tangling into his hair.
Luke moaned slightly, chasing her lips as she pulled away from him, playfully shushing him, “As much as I love the noises you make, baby, gotta be quiet, you know that.”
She recognized the downturn of his lips, instantly mocking his pout, “Poor baby.”
He only huffed, closing his eyes and returning his head to its previous position, right between her tits, and suddenly all of his sadness went away, perfectly cozy. Her hand scratched at his scalp, never letting up in the slightest.
A few minutes later she heard him sigh, looking down at him and furrowing her eyebrows, “What?”
“Don’t want to go back to bed.”
“Just stay, I’ll wake you up when you need to. You know Jack, he probably won’t wake up for at least another 2 hours.”
He nodded, tightening his hold on her and trying to push his head further into her. She laughed again, tugging at his curls slightly, “I don’t think you can get any closer, baby.”
“Can too.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
2 hours later, Sabrina had yet to wake Luke and was yet to hear any sound from Jack. Well, that was until about two minutes ago when there was a knocking on her bedroom door and a slightly concerned and tired version of Jack’s voice, “Sab! Have you seen Luke? He’s not in the room or bathroom. Or anywhere actually.”
She slid a hand under Luke’s shirt while the other clamped around his mouth, preventing any noise from escaping. However, he didn’t stir a bit, soft snores still present.
“Nope. Haven’t seen him. Maybe he went to the store or something?”
“Sab, there’s no stores or restaurants open right now.” She rolled her eyes and pinched Luke’s side, hoping it would be enough to rouse him from his sleep.
When Jack replied, Luke was still asleep and she was convinced that he was deeper in sleep than he was before. She huffed, moving her hand up further. Desperate times call for desperate measures, she thought to herself before flicking her thumb across his nipple, eliciting a quiet groan from the boy as his eyes shot open.
She grinned, replying to Jack, “I don’t know Jackson! Maybe he went for a walk then.”
Sabrina wasn’t sure her boyfriend’s eyes could widen even more but somehow they did, looking between her and the door that was currently the only barrier from his brother finding out about them. She slowly released her hand from his mouth, running it through her hair as he spoke softly, panicking, “What’re we going to do?”
At first, she shrugged but then an idea formed in her mind, “Jack!”
“Yes?”
“I think I left one of your presents at your place the other day. Would you go get it? Please?”
“Really Sab?” The two could hear him grumble, his footsteps heavy as he walked back to the guest room.
5 minutes later they heard him return, “I’ll be back.”
“Thank you, Jacky!”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Text me if Luke gets back.”
When the door closed, Luke and Sabrina burst out into giggles, leaning into each other as they did so. It took them a few minutes to calm down and catch their breath, but once they did Luke just looked at her with pleading eyes, “Does this mean we can cuddle more now?”

Had it been any other night she would’ve been fine with being out this late at a bar with Arber and a few of his teammates, but it was a Friday night and they had just come off a huge win against the Bruins. There were too many people, too many beers being passed around, too much everything if she was honest.
Squished between Arber and Cole, she blinked her eyes quickly to avoid the slight daze settling over her. She had a long day at work, doing everything she was asked to do and more, making her as tired as ever. The jersey she was wearing didn’t help much, because, despite the cold that was just past the door, she was sweating her ass off in this bar. It clung to her uncomfortably, sweat visible whenever she turned just right. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail, desperate to get the feeling of hair off her neck.
The motion caused her to elbow Arber, murmuring a soft apology that even she couldn’t hear over all the talking. He looked down at her, flashing her a grin once he saw what she was doing, “Hot?”
Y/n nodded in response, sighing in relief as her arms fell back to her sides and her hair was securely pulled back. She leaned her head onto his shoulder, reaching her arm out to grab the drink in front of her, tilting her back as she finished it. It burned her throat but she didn’t mind much, the slight buzz keeping her awake.
She finally tuned into the ongoing conversation around her, rolling her eyes when she heard Juraj say something about the game. She removed her head from her boyfriend’s shoulder, leaning up so she could whisper in his ear, “Can’t believe you all just played almost three hours worth of hockey and here we are talking about it.”
Arber shrugged, looking down at her, the same grin plastered on his face, “What can I say?” He ducked down, pressing a kiss below her ear.
She blushed, grateful for the heat inside she could easily blame it on, but he knew better. She buried her head into his shoulder, now trying to drown out said conversation. She only could go for so long before the tickle in her throat became uncomfortable.
She lifted her head, kissing his cheek and murmuring, “I’ll be back.”
His lips turned down in a pout, watching as she stood and scooted past him. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into his side, her legs brushing against his thigh. He looked up at her, a small pout on his face as he did so, “Where you going?”
Y/n laughed, running a hand through his hair and kissing the top of his head, “I’ll be back. Just going to grab another drink. You want one?”
He shook his head, pointing towards his still half-full bottle, “M’okay. I’ll go get it for you.”
“Baby, I’ll be fine. I can do it myself.”
“But,” He frowns again. “Don’t want you to get uncomfortable.”
“I’ll be okay, you know where I’ll be if I’m not back soon.”
Finally, he nodded, letting her go slowly, kissing her arm softly before she walked away. When he turned back to the table he blinked when he saw his teammates looking at him. He narrowed his eyes, “What?”
They all scrambled with excuses, going back to their conversation and taking swigs of their drinks. The whole time y/n was gone, Arber fiddled with the bottle in front of him, passing it back and forth between his hands.
Meanwhile, y/n made her way through the multiple bodies that were either drinking or yelling a little too loudly for her liking. She was able to squeeze her way up to the bar, waiting for the bartender to look her way so she could order herself a drink.
Just as the bartender turned away, she felt a slight nudge from her side and she flicked her gaze over expecting to see one of the guys there but instead found one that she didn’t know. He was tall, not as tall as Arber was but still stood at a decent height. His hair was messy but not in a way that she would’ve preferred and his rough stubble did nothing to compliment his face, not that she wanted to like him, but if she did? She wasn’t sure there was anything to like.
She didn’t say anything, moving her eyes back to watch as the bartender made her drink, trying to ignore the uneasy vibe the guy next to her radiated off of him. She felt the nudge again, this time it made annoyance flash in her eyes. This was the last thing she needed on a day like this.
“Yes?” She looked over at him, her full attention now on him.
He grinned, but not the kind that Arber gave her earlier, this one irked her the wrong way, “Hi.”
“Hi.”
“You’re very pretty.”
Her nose scrunched up slightly at the alcohol that laced his breath, trying not to make it too obvious. He propped his arm on the bar top, leaning his head in his hand as the other tugged on her jersey, “Hockey fan, hm?”
“Yep.”
She attempted to scoot over, but only knocked into the person who was standing beside her, giving them an all but sincere apology. Her eyes moved back to the girl who was making her drink, sighing in relief once she saw that she was nearing her.
She took the drink from her, giving her a desperate look but she didn’t even bat an eye up at her before moving to make another drink. She huffed slightly, taking a sip of her drink. He never moved, still toying with the edge of the jersey she was wearing, the same non-flattering grin on his face.
“So, who’s your favorite player?”
“My boyfriend.” Her voice had a slight edge to it, hoping to get the point across to him.
He didn’t take the hint, only chuckling in response, “Oh your boyfriend huh? C’mon, tell me, who’s your favorite player? Bet it’s like Jack Hughes or Trevor Zegras or something, yeah?”
“Actually,” A voice cut in, hand wrapping around the guy’s wrist, “It’s me.”
Both sets of eyes shot over to him, y/n’s softening in relief and the guy’s widening. Arber tightened his grip on his wrist, trying to pry his fingers away from his jersey. It seemed like the guy continued to not take the hint, trying to shrug his hand out of his grip, “Jeez let go, man.”
Y/n stepped away and slightly behind Arber as she watched the scene in front of her unfold. She watched as the guy winced at the grip that she could only assume tightened even more once she removed herself from between the two.
“I’m going to give you five seconds to explain why you still thought it was a good idea to touch my girl even when she said she had a boyfriend.”
The man fumbled with his words, a stuttering mess as he tried to explain himself, but even he knew that no amount of words would ever be enough to dig himself out of the hole he created for himself.
She could feel the eyes turning and gazing at the three of them, wrapping an arm around her boyfriend’s bicep and going up on her tiptoes to whisper in his ear, “Drop it. Just wanna go home now, please.”
And as much as he wanted to comply with her needs, he couldn’t let him get away with even so much as being in her vicinity. He only briefly broke the stare-down he was in to usher her off towards his team, “Just go find Slaf or Pat or Cole.”
“Arber…” She trailed off once she saw the look in his eyes, nodding and stepping away to do as he said.
She practically ran through the crowd that had only grown since she went to get her drink earlier. She reached the table, slightly out of breath, “I-”
Nick looked up at her, the first to notice her return, eyebrow raising as he took in her flushed face and frantic eyes, “What’s going on?”
“Arber- Some dude-”
“Alright breathe, y/n.” Cole stood up, placing a hand on her back, “Take your time.”
She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly before talking, “There was this guy, he kept talking to me and like playing with my jersey and stuff, and Arber just-”
“Wanted to beat him up. Gotcha, c’mon.”
She followed the group of them, repeating the same path she took not long ago from the opposite direction. When they got back to where Arber was, his hands were now gripping the guy’s collar, and was saying something that only he could hear.
She watched as Nick and Juraj made their way over to him, prying his hands away from the dude and holding him back. She stayed with Patrick and Cole, not wanting to leave their side.
It wasn’t too long after that Arber walked back over to where she stood, cupping her face and scanning it for any discomfort, “Are you okay? He didn’t hurt you, did he?
She shook her head, eyes looking into his, slightly glassy from being overwhelmed. He smoothed her hair down, tucking her into his chest, “C’mon let's get you home, hm?”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
The drive home was silent, Arber’s hand never moving from where it was linked with hers over the center console. The walk up to their apartment was silent too, Arber keeping her close to him the whole way, eyes looking around cautiously.
They entered the apartment, Arber hanging his coat up and throwing the keys into the small dish that lay on the small entranceway table. He led her into their room, setting her on the bed, hands fiddling with the edge of her jersey, “Let’s get this off you.”
She nodded in response, lifting her arms as he took it off. He grabbed one of his sweatshirts, pulling it down over her head. He looked at her, a soft smile gracing his lips before pressing a kiss to her forehead. He walked back over to their closet, grabbing a pair of shorts and sweatpants, holding them out for her to choose which one she wanted.
She reached for the sweatpants, tugging her jeans off and pulling them, wanting nothing more than to be enveloped in warmth. She curled up into their bed, snuggling into Arber’s arms as he pulled the covers over the two of them. His arms circled her waist, basically smothering her in him as he placed multiple kisses across her face.
She giggled, trying to get away from him, “Arbs!”
He grinned up at her, pulling away to look at her fully, “What?”
Both their gazes went soft, his left index finger coming up to trace her cheekbone. He sighed before he asked, “Are you sure you’re okay?
She nodded, biting her lip as a habit. She watched as his face focused on her, his eyes trailing over every inch of her face before starting again. She reached up, grabbing his hand and interlocking their fingers, “Are you okay?”
Her voice was soft, Arber was sure he wouldn’t have heard it if they weren’t so close to each other. He nodded, bringing their hands to his mouth and leaving a gentle kiss on the back of hers, “I’m okay. Just-” He sighed again, “Hated seeing you uncomfortable like that. Hated seeing him think he could do that to you.”
She smiled as his grip on her hand slightly tightened, “But you were there and nothing more happened.”
“I know, I know.” He kissed her softly.
He rested his forehead against hers as they pulled away, him giving her lips one last kiss. She stared at him before smiling, “You didn’t have to cause a scene though.”
He rolled his eyes at her teasing voice, bringing her to his chest, “Shut up. Was just protecting my girl, s’all. That such a bad thing?”
“No, like when you get all protective. S’hot.”
“That’s what I thought.”

stand there like a ghost shaking from the rain, rain she'll open up the door and say, are you insane
There was a knock on the door, and y/n jumped up from where she sat in her dorm room. She landed on the ground with a soft grunt, making her way to the door and opening it.
When she saw who was standing there, her eyes widened but couldn’t help the grin that made its way up on her face, “Hey Coley.”
Cole was dripping wet as he stood there, having had to run from the bus stop and then stand outside the building waiting for someone to either walk in or out, which was an awkward situation to explain, ‘Hi, can you please let me in? I used to go here and now I play in the NHL, which doesn't matter but I’m looking for my best friend.’
And that’s how Cole was here. Wet and shaking from the rain, “Hi y/n/n.”
“What are you doing here? Are you insane? Don’t you have a game tonight? How’d you get in?” Her mind raced with a bunch of questions, confused and concerned.
“I needed to see you, I missed you.”
Y/n pulled Cole into her room and gave him a change of clothes, “Let me go throw this in the dryer.”
When the blanket was warm enough she brought it back and threw it at him, “Okay now what is the real reason you’re here?”
Cole shrugged, sitting down on the bean bag she had in the room, “I just felt like something was wrong with you.”
“So you missed your NHL game to come to see me because you had a feeling that something was wrong?”
He nodded, now realizing how weird and stupid that sounded. He gave her an awkward, lopsided, smile, “Yeah.”
She shooked her head, a grin making her way onto her face, “You are fucking insane Cole Caufield.”
“Only for you.” He gave her a wink.
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
say it's been a long six months and you were too afraid to tell her what you want, want
The past few months had been nerve-wracking for Cole and y/n. They both knew the time till Cole’s NHL debut was decreasing and decreasing. They made the most of it however, spending every waking moment with each other when they could, staying at each other’s dorms, going out to dinner, y/n going to his games. They were never apart unless they absolutely had to be.
Cole’s feelings had only deepened with the more they hung out. Every time he would see her his eyes roamed her figure up and down memorizing what she looked like in case one day he would have to pack up everything and leave.
At games he would see her in his jersey, something in his stomach twisting nervously. He would see her talking to his teammates or another guy and all he could feel was jealousy. Then he would be hanging out with her and she would ask to wear his hoodie and he quickly took it off to hand it to her.
Y/n wasn’t the only one who had stolen the other’s things. Cole always had a hair tie on his wrist in case she ever got too hot and needed to pull her hair up or it was blowing in her face and giving her a hassle. He stole some of her larger jackets just because they smelled like her and her scent was comforting. He stole her rings sometimes, the metal around his finger giving him something to fidget with when he became anxious.
As much as they both would love Cole to be in the NHL they were both worried about leaving each other. They had been friends since childhood, always with one another. Their bond strengthened throughout their younger years, each sticking up for the other when needed, and going to each other’s games.
She wore his jersey at World Juniors, and he wore her jersey at her soccer games (both made by her), both screaming out their support. They would wait for each other in their designated spots after each game, running to hug each other once they laid eyes on each other. They always gave one another a small present, a pin or a sticker, or a piece of jewelry.
The last six months they both noticed the slightly growing distance between them. They were trying to lessen the hurt of him leaving when it came time. Cole had been more worried about her than he ever had been before. He didn’t know if it was his best friend’s protective instincts kicking on or if it was the deeper feelings that had made him feel like this.
Despite both harboring unknown feelings for each other, they both knew there was a chance that if the other didn’t feel the same, their friendship could fall apart. They were both afraid of how the outcome would end. Cole’s worries were worse than y/n’s, she had been by his side for so long, never doubting him one step of the way, he couldn’t let his stupid little feelings get in the way of that.
He had been on his way over to her dorm when he received a text from the girl, ‘Bring ice cream and tissues, please.’
His heart broke slightly at the message, confusion plastered on his face. He typed his message in response, asking if there was anything particularly wrong or if something had happened.
She didn’t respond, just emphasizing her first message. Cole sighed at the lack of communication that was going on before turning around and walking back to the parking lot of his dorm to grab his car and go to the store to pick up her favorite ice cream and the soft tissues she had requested.
While he was there, his eyes caught the leftover Valentine’s Day decorations, candy, and other gifts that were severely messed up from the number of times people had gone through them. He sighed when he saw couples rummaging through remnants of the red and pink objects, teddy bears and other stuffed animals, and heart-shaped boxes with chocolates in them. He could’ve been getting them for her.
He did end up buying a teddy bear, one from the kids section and not from the Valentine’s Day spot. He grabbed her favorite ice cream and some apple juice, picking up her favorite chips and cookies as well. If she was upset, he was determined to make her feel better. He picked the softest tissues he could find and when he was walking his eyes caught sight of the book section.
He looked down at his watch before making a rash decision to take a peek down the aisle. He spotted one of the books she had been wanting for a while and picked it up before heading to checkout. He bagged everything before running back out to his car and driving to her dorm.
He was lucky that one of the kids that had lived there was walking into the building when he got there, so he just followed suit behind him. He didn’t want to make her come down and get him when he could’ve easily found a way in. He ran up the stairs, not bothering to wait for the elevator, and knocked on her door.
Y/n sat on her bed, her blanket wrapped around her as she watched her favorite show. She had tear-stained cheeks and puffy eyes, her nose a little stuffed from the crying she had done. She walked over to the door and opened it, before she smiled at him, “Cole!”
He padded over to her, wrapping her in a hug as he murmured, “What’s wrong?”
She shook her head before scooting over and patting the bed, “Come sit.”
Cole jumped onto the bed, placing the Target bag between the two of them, taking each item out one by one, “I got you ice cream, chips, cookies, apple juice, tissues, and that book you’ve been wanting. And I got you a teddy bear.”
Her eyes immediately filled with tears again, clutching the bear in her arms, burying her head into his shoulder, “‘M gonna miss you.”
The boy furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, “What do you mean? I’m not going anywhere.”
“You don’t know that Cole. You could get the call any day saying you have to go to Montreal. You could leave any day.”
He frowned and wrapped his arm around her, rubbing her shoulder with his thumb, “Is that what’s making you upset?”
She nodded, “I don’t want you to go.”
He smiled slightly, “I don’t want to go either.”
The two sat in silence before y/n spoke up again, “It’s been a long six months worrying about this.”
“I know.”
And yet, Cole was still afraid to tell her what he wanted.
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
and that's how it works that's how you get the girl
“Start with a romantic gesture. Maybe something from her favorite movie, or something cliche. For example, standing in the rain at her doorstep. Or maybe singing a song in front of a large crowd of people. Or maybe doing one of your fears to impress her.”
Cole nodded as he sat on his best friend’s bed, taking mental notes on everything that she was saying. He had come to her for advice on how to ask out a girl that he had liked for what felt like ages at this point. Despite multiple attempts, the girl couldn’t get out a name, not even a hint about the girl, and that was because he could not let her find out it was her.
“Anything else?”
Y/n nodded as she flipped through the pages in her mind, “She will probably tell you that you’re insane for doing something like that, but… it’s cute. A lot of girls would like a big romantic gesture like that.”
“How would you react if someone did that for you?”
She shrugged, “I dunno. I’m not a fan of public things. That’s embarrassing.” She breathed out a laugh, moving her attention to a stack of books she had to organize.
Cole thought, so singing in front of a crowd is definitely out of the question then. He watched as she rearranged her books on her bookshelf, following her every movement. She had started to talk again, unbeknownst to him. She stepped in front of him, snapping her fingers in his face, “Cole! Cole! Cole!”
He flinched, “What?”
“Pay attention, Cole. I’m trying to help you here.”
He nodded and shook his head of his remaining thoughts, focusing on her, “Okay so… how long have you liked her for?”
He shrugged, “A while, I think. But I think I noticed it about 6 months ago.”
She nodded, “And you’ve been too afraid to tell her what you want, right?”
He let out a noise in agreement and sat up fully on her bed, “Yeah.”
“Okay, well if you do what I say. You’ll be sure to start dating her in no time.”
“Are you sure?”
“That’s how it works. That’s how you get the girl.” She patted his head and launched herself onto her bed, “What do you want to watch?”

remind her how it used to be, be yeah, with pictures in frames of kisses on cheeks, cheeks
Cole was unpacking a box his mom had sent to him, things from home that he might’ve wanted in his new apartment. He felt uneasy going back through some of these things, most of them being something related to hockey. When he got to the bottom of the box he saw a few rectangular objects wrapped tightly in bubble wrap.
He pulled them out, moving the box out of his way. He placed them down before unwrapping the first one. He felt the picture frame and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, but when he saw which picture it was he smiled. It was from when they were younger, it was their first day of first grade and y/n’s mom made them take a picture. Y/n gave him a joking kiss on the cheek and both y/n and Cole’s mom had captured the moment. He placed it on his nightstand and unwrapped the next one.
This one was similar to the one before, but this time it was one from his and y/n’s high school graduation. They were both in their caps and gowns still and she was leaning over and kissing his cheek. Cole was holding both of their empty diploma cases.
Following that one was another one of a similar pose. It had become one of their signature photos. Every year on the first day of school they would do it, but he had only seen a couple of them. Most of them either lived on an old hard drive or were buried deep in photo albums in one of their houses. This one had been when they had just moved into their freshman dorms and they decided to recreate the photo once more.
He gathered the two frames he just opened and placed one down on the living room table and one in the kitchen. His apartment instantly felt more at home to him. Something to remember his best friend by made him feel more relaxed.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
When she visited for the first time she noticed the pictures immediately, “Where did you get these?”
“My mom sent them to me. I had them in my room back at home.”
She nodded and held the one that he put in the living room in her hands, “We were so little… and cute.”
The two giggled at her comment, “You’re still cute.”
“Thanks, Coley. You are too.”
The two both blushed at each other’s comments before sitting in silence. Y/n smiled sadly when a thought plagued her mind, “I miss how it used to be. Everything was so simple back then.”
Cole nodded, throwing his arm on the back of the couch, “Yeah. We were never apart back then, were we.”
She laid her head on his shoulder, “I miss you, Cole.”
“I miss you two, y/n/n.”
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
tell her how you must've lost your mind when you left her all alone and never told her why, why
One week after Cole had left, y/n had fallen into a tiny depression state. They hadn’t gone even a couple of days without seeing each other ever, let alone Facetime each other. Cole had been so busy with flying out to Edmonton making his debut and then having to go to Calgary, before finally being able to settle into his new apartment in Montreal.
She was nervous for him but she was also nervous for herself. They hadn’t got to say goodbye to each other, she had gotten his text while she was in class that he was leaving. She tried to call him but it went straight to voicemail and she felt defeated.
On the flip side, Cole had been anxious, not about himself but about y/n. He knew about how she typically handled things when she was alone and most of the time it wasn’t the best thing to happen. When he finally got a chance to breathe and sit in his apartment, he called y/n and she answered on the first ring, “Hi Cole! How’s your apartment? Everything going okay up there?”
He nodded, a smile tugging on his lips when he laid his eyes on her picture on his screen, “Yeah it’s been going okay.”
“Anyone giving you any trouble because I’ll fly up there to beat them up for you.”
He laughed, “I know you would.”
The two went silent for a few minutes, a slight frown gracing y/n’s face, “I’m sorry.”
She tilted her head in confusion, “For what?”
“For leaving you. Especially without warning really.”
Her frown deepened at his words, “It’s not your fault Cole. You were, are, moving on to bigger and better things.”
“But I didn’t want to leave you, y/n/n. I need you to know that. I would’ve stayed for you.”
“I know you would’ve, Cole. But like I said, you’re doing something greater for yourself. I shouldn’t be holding you back from your dreams.”
The words were on the tip of his tongue, but you’re a part of that dream. Yet, he couldn’t get them out. He wasn’t going to be the one to ruin their friendship over something like this, she didn’t deserve it. So he kept his lips shut and listened to her talk about whatever had happened that day, the reason he called, going blank in his mind.
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
and that's how it works that's how you lost the girl
“I don’t think she’s into me, y/n/n.”
“What do you mean?”
“I tried what you said but she didn’t even bat an eye to it. She completely dismissed me.”
Sure it was weird for Cole to be talking about his girl problems to y/n when she was the girl he was talking about, but it’s not like she would ever know. Cole was thankful at that moment for his friend’s obliviousness, it came in handy sometimes.
“Maybe she did and she just doesn’t know what to think about it, maybe she’s still trying to figure something out.”
Cole signed on the opposite side of the phone, growing a little frustrated at both himself and her. Why couldn’t he just say how he was feeling, if she didn’t like him then fine they could just move on, try and move past this, “But what if she just doesn’t like me.”
“I’m not accusing you of anything Cole, but did you do anything stupid to make her think differently about you? Or think differently about her feelings toward you?”
“I mean, I did kind of leave her without telling her why…”
“You’re telling me you didn’t tell her you were leaving to go play in the NHL? You just got up and left her?”
“Well when you put it like that, it sounds worse.”
Y/n rolled her eyes, “You probably broke her heart, Cole.”
Cole let that thought sink in, the thought of leaving y/n there all alone in Madison with little to no friends. Of course, she had other friends but she was always hanging out with him. He repositioned himself on his bed and placed his free hand on his head, rubbing his forehead. He didn’t mean to hurt her.
“Cole?”
“I’m such a fucking idiot. How could I do that to her?”
Y/n felt heartbroken for him, he sounded so upset with himself for his actions. She was also heartbroken by the fact that Cole had these strong feelings for someone else, someone who wasn’t her. She tried to keep her composure by staying silent, letting a tear make its way down her face. She wiped it before talking again, “Cole, it’s okay. There are ways to fix these things. Did you at least apologize to her?”
“Yeah, kind of I think? I totally have lost my mind, haven’t I y/n?”
She just shrugged, “I don’t think you ever had a mind, to be honest, Cole.”
He forced a small laugh, “Gee, thanks.”
“Has she talked to you since then? About what happened?”
“No. She hasn’t brought it up. She said she supported me after I apologized but that’s about it. She sounded sad but also a little angry.”
She stayed silent for a minute, “I hate to be the person to tell you this but I think you lost her.”
Cole ran a hand over his face in frustration, letting her words hit him like a truck.
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
and you could know that I don't want you to go
It was the first Friday without Cole and she was sitting in her dorm room. He had made his debut two days ago and she couldn’t even gather the strength to watch his game. She felt horrible about it, she was his best friend, and she should support him through everything.
She watched the movie that they were planning on watching that day, 13 going on 30. It was y/n’s week to choose, hence the reason why it was a Rom-Com. Cole didn’t mind, he would watch every cheesy romantic movie with her if she wanted to watch it.
He had a game that day, but once again, y/n had no desire to watch it. It was just another reminder that he was gone, she could only handle so much. She sat on her bed, the movie playing on the TV with a bucket of popcorn sitting on her right side.
Of course, she had to pick the movie in which the two main characters of the movie were love interests and were best friends. It was like the universe was mocking her of some sort. She couldn’t escape the facts. Her heart sympathized when Jennifer Garner’s character felt as if she lost her best friend to the girl he was getting married to. She couldn’t imagine life if Cole got married to someone else.
It was like a blow to the face watching it. She had the chance to do something but she still sat in her dorm room doing nothing but stuffing her face full of popcorn. Much like Elle in Legally Blonde, when the final scene of the movie came up and Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo got married she threw her popcorn at the screen in frustration, why couldn’t she have that life?
She looked at her phone to see a text from Cole, saying they lost and he didn’t want to talk tonight. He had taken the loss as a burden to himself, being new on the team and not being able to contribute. She was honestly grateful that he texted her that because if he hadn’t she would then have to come up with an excuse on why she didn’t want to talk.
She scrolled through pictures of her and Cole in her camera roll, tears welling in her eyes. As much as she wanted Cole to go and pursue his dreams, the thought in the back of her mind was being selfish, she didn’t want Cole to leave her. They had been together for so long and hockey just ripped him away from her. She had been so supportive of him so she thought she at least deserved a little bit of selfishness.
She threw her phone across the room much like she had done with the popcorn. She sat there crying as the credits rolled across the screen before Netflix gave her more recommendations on what to watch based on the movie, but she was in no mood to watch another romance movie. She rolled her eyes, tears still streaming down her face. She backed out of the menu before putting on a random stand-up show.
He could’ve known that she didn’t want him to go because, in reality, he didn’t want to go either. However, y/n’s mind was like Cole’s and she didn’t want to ruin their friendship due to her feelings. It felt stupid and silly. They had a perfect friendship so why should she ruin it because of her feelings?
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
remind me how it used to be and say you want me, yeah, yeah
The clouds covered a majority of the sky, not a star in sight. The moon was visible every few minutes once one cloud passed by before another one came and covered it. When the moon was shining, it shone right into y/n’s dorm room where she sat in her normal state with her blanket wrapped around her watching her and Cole’s favorite movie.
They had watched it since they were children. Every Friday night Cole and y/n’s families would have one another over for dinner and y/n and Cole would sleep over at each other’s houses depending on where they were that night. They would choose a movie to watch and most likely if they didn’t know, that movie would be the one chosen.
It had been a month since she last saw Cole. She had flown out to Montreal as soon as she was finished with school, going to his games when she could. She had stayed there for a week or two before going back home for the rest of the summer. It being her first time in Cole’s apartment, she noticed the lack of decorations in it, the only thing really there was pictures of her and him.
She looked around her room and a picture frame caught her eye. Cole was wearing his World Juniors USA jersey, his medal hanging from around his neck. They had just won and Cole was beaming and y/n’s lips were pressed firmly against his cheek. The photo they had been recreating since they were 6.
She smiled when she saw it and something clicked in her brain. Cole had three of the same picture just at different times in his apartment, and when she saw them she remembered how they used to be, much like now. Continuing to mentally flip through things she had told him, she remembered telling him to make a grand gesture; singing in front of a crowd, standing in the rain-
“Holy shit…”
She jumped out of her bed, the blanket falling from around her shoulders. She couldn’t believe what she was thinking, there was no way that her best friend liked her. I mean she knew that she liked him but Cole Caufield, liking her? It was one of the most unbelievable things that had happened in her lifetime.
She continued to run through everything and anything that she might’ve told Cole that he could’ve done. Even running through things Cole had done for her that seemed even remotely romantic. He had bought her a book that he knew she was eyeing, he bought her cookies and chips when she didn’t even ask him to. He showed up at all of her games that he could. He apologized for making his NHL debut and leaving her alone at Madison when it wasn’t his fault.
He bought her multiple gifts for her birthday and Christmas, he dropped everything to make sure that she was okay, he made her food when she was feeling down and felt like she couldn’t do anything, he helped her with her homework and helped her study for exams. He did everything for her and she was just now realizing it.
She mentally punched herself in the head for not realizing it sooner. He had done so much for her that basically screamed ‘I love you.’ Why did it take her this long to notice? She was frustrated at herself for not doing something about it. She literally gave him the advice to get the girl but she should’ve been following her own advice and picking up on the cues.
She was quick to book a flight to Montreal and repack her suitcase. She ran out of her bedroom, explaining how much she needed to go see Cole and her mom just gave her a knowing smile before ushering her off with a ‘be careful’ and an ‘I love you.’
ू ₒ ु ୨୧ ू ₒ ु
and then you say i want you for worse or for better i would wait for ever and ever broke your heart, i’ll put it back together i would wait for ever and ever
Flying to Montreal wasn’t something she had on her list. But when she had her epiphany she had to see him, she had to get to Cole.
Of course, it was raining when she arrived. She did her best to shield herself from the water but ultimately failed with how hard it was coming down. To her luck, her Uber had dropped her off a block away from where Cole’s apartment was. Instead of waiting to get a new one she just walked there, her suitcase in toe.
She arrived at his house, shivering from the rain. She wrapped her coat tightly around her as she knocked on the door to his apartment. It didn’t take long for Cole to open the door, a bright smile on his face when he opened it, “Y/n! What are you doing here?”
“I needed to see you.”
“Are you fucking insane? Aren’t you supposed to be going on a trip with your family right now?”
“I needed to see you, Cole.”
Cole let her in, stepping aside to create space for her. She stepped in and before she could even think about reaching for her suitcase, Cole grabbed it and moved it in. She was visibly shaking and Cole pulled off his hoodie to give it to her.
He took her jacket, placed it in the drying, and directed her to the couch.
“So what was so important that you needed to fly to Canada to see me?”
“Remember when you were asking me about that girl?”
Cole nodded his head, looking confusedly at her, “Yeah? What’s this about?”
“And you remember what I said to you when you asked?”
“Yeah you told me to say I want you for worse or for better, I would wait forever and ever. I broke your heart, but I’ll put it back together.”
She only gave him a soft smile and waited to see if the words would click. It didn’t for at least five minutes, causing the two to sit in awkward silence. Cole’s face lit up when he realized what she was trying to say, “Are you serious?”
“If I wasn't, would I be doing exactly what I told you?”
Cole stood up and walked over to her, grabbing her face, his thumbs rubbing gently under her eyes. He let out a soft breath, still smiling, “Can I kiss you?”
“Do you even have to ask?” He kissed her immediately after that, both of them smiling into the kiss.
If only y/n was as good at following advice as giving it, they would’ve been in this position so much earlier.
and that's how it works that's how you got the girl

late night luke thought 🫶🏻
after you had a long day of work/homework while being on your period (the actual worst), luke is making you come over to his apartment. he’s heating up multiple blankets in the dryer, running you a bath, making you tea, setting out your favorite clothes of his, even having one your favorite stuffed animals at his apartment for nights like this.
he’s ordering you your favorite food from your favorite restaurant, your favorite dessert is already in his fridge or freezer or whatever. he has your favorite movie queued up on the tv in his bedroom with your favorite candle burning as well.
he wraps you in all your blankets, setting the food out in front of you so you can eat as you watch your movie. after your done eating, he takes you into his arms and lays his hand across your stomach under your shirt to provide more warmth and every time you so much as twitch, he’s placing a kiss on your head, temple, cheek, lips, etc.
and every time you wince in pain, he rubs soothing circle into your stomach, proving even more relief. and as you drift off to sleep he’s whispering sweet nothings in your ear, aiding you in your need for sleep.
anyway that’s it
thanks for coming to my late night thoughts

Gabe had all but thrown himself into hockey these past few weeks. If he wasn’t in class, he was at the rink, if he wasn’t doing homework, he was at the rink, if he wasn’t eating, he was at the rink. It had seemed like the only thing in his life that he could control right now and he was going to take advantage of that.
This had been the longest time he had ever gone without talking to Will, two weeks. It had been two weeks since he had blown up at Mack with his boyfriend and girlfriend watching, two weeks since he’s fucked up the most important thing in his life, and two weeks since he’s felt like he’s lost two of the most important people in his life. Two weeks of nonstop hockey and nights that consisted of 3-4 hours of sleep if he was lucky.
Will himself couldn’t think straight even when he was at the rink. The words he said were engraved in his mind, closely followed by words he had heard. It was all beginning to overwhelm him. Which made ignoring people seem like the safest choice, he wouldn’t fuck up any more than he already had and nobody could get mad at him for doing something, so that’s what he did.
He felt guilty each time he swiped away a text from Molly, each time he declined an invitation to hang out with Mack, each time he had said no to a team dinner or celebrating a win. Still, that guilt slowly just became another numb feeling he had, one that he shoved into the back of his mind.
Molly, on the other hand, has had two weeks of nonstop worrying and annoyance. If it wasn’t Will she was worried about it was Gabe, if it wasn’t Gabe it was her grades, if it wasn’t her grades… well it was legit anything else that the universe had decided to throw at her just to fuck with her. And she, quite frankly was over it.
She had spent a great deal of time sending text messages to her boyfriends, most of which went either unseen or unreturned. And if she was lucky enough that they had replied, it was a short and to-the-point text that consisted of ‘I’m fine. Have practice in an hour, talk later’ to which, they never really did talk later.
She was starting to lose her mind at this point, if the two of them couldn’t figure this out on their own and wouldn’t accept help to figure this out, she wasn’t sure what that meant for the three of them. She wasn’t sure if this would be the end of them. Maybe she was being dramatic, but she had a right to be when Gabe and Will stuck her in the middle of their drama. She wasn’t about to pick sides, but it sure was a hell of a lot easier to get Gabe into shape when he was just down the street.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
The rink was colder than she had remembered, she hadn’t stepped foot in one since the fight, too many memories that she didn’t want to recall. She wrapped her jacket tighter around her, navigating through Conte Forum like it was her second home.
The sound of skates on ice and sticks against pucks welcomed her as she got closer to where Gabe was in the middle of the ice, shooting pucks relentlessly at the net. When she found out he had been here, she hadn’t really been shocked, it was the same answer she had been getting any time she texted one of his teammates or stopped by his place.
After the tenth shot at the net, she called out his name, halting his movements. She could see the way his body went rigid when he heard her voice, watching as he shook his head before going back to shooting as if he had only imagined it.
“Gabe, please. Talk to me.”
He ignored her, continuing his movements. Despite knowing she could get in trouble by walking with her street shoes over the ice, she did it anyway, making her way towards him with slow movements, trying not to fall. It took her a minute to reach him, stopping him just as he lined up to take another shot, hand resting on his shoulder, “Baby.”
Her touch, or the nickname, caused him to stop completely, resting his stick by his side and head dropping down to look at his feet. The way he turned around to face her was like he was physically restraining himself from doing so, but her gentle touch and soft coaxing voice made him cave quickly.
He still avoided her gaze as he came to a stop after turning around, looking quite literally anywhere but her face. He let her take his hand in hers, let her press a kiss to his cheek, let her eyes wander over his body searching for any signs of injury or exhaustion (which he knew she found plenty of), but when her fingers gripped his jaw, he did not let her turn his head.
“Don’t,” He tried to make his voice sound stern and forceful, but it came out weak and cracked like he was gasping for another breath of air.
“Look at me, Gabe.”
He had to admit, she had done a much better job of making her voice sound stronger than he had. His eyes finally trailed over to her, crumbling as soon as their gazes met. She watched as tears brimmed in his eyes, reaching up to rub her thumb across the dark circle underneath one of them. He hadn’t allowed himself to cry since that night, and her bringing him into a hug made him break down fully, stick clattering to ice as he practically went limp in her arms.
They stayed like that for a while, Molly’s hand in his hair and his arms wrapped around her waist as best as he could. The hoodie he was wearing felt so baggy on him that he was sure he had lost some weight over the past weeks, but that was just another thing he would worry about later.
When he finally calmed down enough to pull away and wipe his tears, he could feel the cold seeping into his bones, shivering slightly as he removed himself from her warmth. She gave him a small smile, bending down to grab his stick, “Let’s go back to mine, yeah?”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
A nice hot shower and a change of clothes later only made Gabe feel marginally better, but it was progress. That was what he told himself as sat on her bed, feet dangling off while watching her ruffle through draws until she found two Wii remotes and turned to him with a grin, “For old times sake?”
“Yeah.” He reached for one of them, moving over so she could sit next to him as he watched the Mario Kart screen load, clicking buttons until the character selection screen popped up. His cursor hovered between Mario and Luigi before he finally clicked on Luigi.
The hesitation caused a slight crack in Molly’s heart, maybe she was expecting him to pick Mario, he always argued with Will over whether or not who was who until he gave in at one glance at Will’s puppy dog eyes and let him pick Mario.
She clicked Donkey Kong, her favorite character for some unknown reason but she played as him every time and she had no intentions of stopping now. She let him pick the first course, and she wasn’t surprised when the familiar opening to DK Summit popped up. No matter how many times they played, they would always do the same order; DK Summit, Luigi Circuit, Mario Circuit, and then Rainbow Road, which they can all confidently say that they haven’t gotten first place yet, but it’ll happen… one day.
They played for the next hour, doing the same four courses over and over again, as they sat in silence beside the music and sounds of the game. When Molly crossed the finish line of Rainbow Road for the fifth time, she set the remote aside, looking over at him, “Ready to talk?”
Everything in Gabe’s mind screamed no, but for the first time in a while, he felt like he could breathe without sending himself into a panic attack. While one small step at a time was good for some people, he just wanted to get it all out of the way as quickly as possible. Why stop when he had so much motivation?
He gave her a small nod because even though he was ready to talk, he wasn’t sure how to start. She took his controller from him, setting them both on her desk before climbing back up on the bed. She smiled when his hand reached for hers, letting out a sigh of relief that went unnoticed by him.
“What did you say?”
He closed his eyes for a minute, a little piece of him still trying to figure out if there was a way out of this but he quickly realized that there was no turning back. So taking a deep breath, he started talking, “Told him that I was annoyed with Mack being around all the time and that I thought he was trying to steal-”
He cut himself off, just the thought of Will’s name made his stomach churn. She nodded, “And what did he say?”
“Told me I was a child, was acting like a spoiled kid who wasn’t getting his way, and that I wasn’t trying to be friends with Mack, but he’s right I wasn’t.”
“You weren’t, yeah. But that doesn’t mean he also had to discredit your feelings.”
“But-”
“Gabe, let me tell you something. You have every right to feel how you feel, how you feel is appropriate to feel, I am a strong believer in that. But that also means that Will does too, and maybe it’s time that both of you start seeing it from each other’s point of view. This is not just a one-sided thing, both of you were wrong and both of you were right. Both of you said harsh and mean things, and both of you didn’t say a lot of things you wanted to say.
“There is more to this than just you being jealous and Will being frustrated. There are many layers and it is going to take time to go through every single emotion you and him are feeling, but I know you love him and I know he loves you, and I know both of you would take the time to talk it out.”
Her words raced through his head, trying to cling to every single piece of information she was saying. It made sense, he knew that. He knew that there were things he could’ve said, maybe should’ve said but didn’t. He knew that Will’s words were right but also harsh.
“He won’t even talk to me.”
“And how do you know that? Have you tried texting him?”
“No.” He mumbled, pink coating his cheeks as he lied. He had reached out to him but didn’t want to voice that Will hadn’t responded out loud. It would make the rejection all too real.
“That’s what I thought. I am not saying that you have to put more effort in than he does or vice versa, but maybe that’s what he needs to know you’re serious about this.”
Gabe bit his lip, that sounded like a good idea, but what could he do to make it up to him? He wasn’t about to send him a shit ton of flowers or gifts or fly to California with a script of words he wants to say, for two reasons. 1. He wasn’t the type of person to do that and 2. Will deserved more.
“Maybe you could… I don’t know, talk to Mack? Apologize, tell him you want to be friends, and move past this.”
He did feel bad for what he said, that was never okay and he knew it as soon as the words left his mouth but anger clouded any form of judgment he might’ve had in the moment. The past two weeks had given him time to reflect and he knew every negative feeling towards Mack had felt wrong and unjustified.
Will had never given Gabe a reason not to trust him, so the moment he said Mack wasn’t trying to get with him he should’ve believed him. And he should’ve seen the blatant attempt of approval Mack was seeking every time he would talk, or try to talk to him. He knew he was a jerk, a dick, every single synonym on this planet for ‘dumbass’ and ‘asshole’ was what he would use to classify himself right now.
He would apologize to Mack, he would make it up to Will and Molly, and he would make it up to himself. Well, the first two were objectively more important, he could get around to making it up to himself.

The next day Gabe sat with Molly in the student center, Gabe anxiously fiddling with his phone as he deleted and added words to his ongoing apology to Mack and Molly sat with her knees tucked into her chest, planning out a new film idea for class.
She looked up at him, eyes growing fond as she saw him, “It doesn’t have to be perfect, baby. Why don’t you just start by texting him hi, I don’t think Mack really wants to get out of practice to see over 200 words of you rambling.”
“Oh ha ha, you’re so funny. You should be a comedian if being behind the camera doesn’t work out for you.”
“Actually, I think I’ll make it my part-time job, but I have two years to figure that out. Plus why would I need to be a comedian when I’d have two rich NHL boyfriends?”
He stared at her, looking back down at his phone, “Yeah if I haven’t scared one of them off already.”
Her smile had turned downwards, a frown across her face now as she reached out to hold his hand, “He still loves you.”
“I know I just-” He fiddled with his phone case, pulling the corner off before putting it back on. He wasn’t sure how to express the doubt in his mind, if that was even what he could call it. Maybe if he denied the feeling long enough it would just go away and he wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore.
“That’s another thing you have to stop doing.” It was like Molly could read him from the inside out and he didn’t know if he was supposed to be grateful or terrified about it.
He glanced up at her, “Doing what?”
“Shoving everything to the back of your mind. I know you don’t always want to share what’s going in that head of yours, but that’s what we’re here for.”
We’re. She said it so casually that it dug into him the slightest bit, he didn’t deserve Will’s obsessive worrying and him caring about him, not after everything he said to him.
He looked back at his phone, swiping into his text messages to send Mack a ‘hi’ like she had told him to. She was right, she always was, but he wouldn’t tell her that in fear of her ego inflating more than it already was.
When he clicked send, he placed his phone down on the table, watching her as she continued going between writing things down and editing footage on her laptop. He had missed being in her presence, he shouldn’t have shut her out, she did nothing wrong to deserve it and he and Will had placed her in the middle of them, again.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked up, pushing her glasses onto her head as she fully abandoned her work now, “I already told you you didn’t need to apologize-”
“Not for the fight, I mean yes but- fuck. I’m sorry we put you in the middle of us, you shouldn’t have to deal with us both being grade-A assholes and shouldn’t have to choose between us. We’re your boyfriends, not your friends who are fighting over you. And for shutting you out these past couple weeks, I should’ve come to you and talked to you but I just- I felt like I wasn’t allowed to, or at least that’s what my brain was telling me.”
He trailed off, unsure of how to continue his apology. When he looked back at her, he saw the soft expression on her face and knew that he said enough, or at least enough for her to grasp what he was trying to say, and at that moment, he knew at least the two of them would be okay.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
It wasn’t until Gabe and Molly were at lunch that Mack responded to him. His phone lit up with the notification and Molly was the first to notice it, nodding her head towards the device. He opened the phone to see the text, it was just as short as he had been, a simple ‘Hey’. He was surprised when another text came through quickly after, ‘Everything okay?’
He should’ve expected it, he had never texted Mack on his own accord. Scratch that, he had never texted Mack, period. If he needed something from Will and he wasn’t responding he would make Molly text Mack and ask if he was asleep.
Molly watched as her boyfriend’s face went through the five stages of grief before she talked, “What did he say?”
“Asked if everything was okay,” Gabe murmured, setting his fork down and taking his phone into both hands, staring down at his lap.
“Just send your mini essay. It’s going to be fine, Gabe. I promise. Mack understands already, trust me, he would want nothing more than to put this all behind him and actually be friends with you.”
He nodded, but that was it. She went back to eating as he copied and pasted his rant from his notes into the message bar. After rereading it 10 times, he thought it was decent enough to send, it wouldn’t make up for the countless times he had ignored him and what he had said the other day, but it bridged the gap in their soon-to-be friendship.
He put his phone back down, shoving it under his leg, knowing Mack would spend at least two minutes reading everything he had spilled to him made him anxious. He took a bite of his food, trying to continue his conversation with Molly in the meantime.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
If Gabe had a dollar for every right thing Molly had said today he wouldn’t need to sign an NHL contract to be a millionaire. Okay, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration but it was true, she had said so many right things today that he didn’t know why he didn’t listen to her in the first place.
He had spent that last hour texting Mack about random things and becoming friends after Mack had written an extensive text about how he wasn’t totally upset but was grateful for his apology. Maybe they were more alike than he thought they were.
However, the distraction Mack was providing slowly faded away when he got his newest text from him, ‘Have you talked to Will yet?’
Thankfully, Molly had been next to him when he got the text and gave him a comforting smile, “Would it be easier to talk about it out loud?”
He nodded, yeah she knew him too well. So Molly called Mack from her phone, propping it against her pillows as the two sat on her bed, waiting for him to answer. His face lit up the screen seconds later, and from the space behind him, he was in his apartment.
“Will’s not here,” his voice was soft as he got himself comfy on his bed. “He went out with some of the guys earlier.”
Molly’s hand wrapped around Gabe’s, giving it a reassuring squeeze that urged him to talk, “I sent him a few texts, sometime last week but he never responded and I haven’t tried since.”
“You did? I thought you said you didn’t.”
“I did, but- it’s not important right now, Molls.”
She gave him a hesitant nod before turning her attention to Mack, “I send him a couple a day, only replies with short answers, can’t get much out of him.”
“Yeah he doesn’t talk much but he acts like everything’s okay. I know the team knows something's wrong, Logan’s tried to get him to go out with them and this is the first time he accepted it.”
“I don’t know what to do.” Gabe’s voice was small, like a child who was admitting that they broke their parents' beloved vase. “If he won’t talk to me, and he’s barely talking to you and Molls…:
“I think you guys should come out here, this weekend. I know you got a game Friday so I guess after that or Saturday? You could come to the game and then you can talk it out, plus it’s our last game before Four Nations so then he could always go back with you guys.”
The two thought about it, it did sound like a good plan. But would it work out, the two had no clue. No risk, no reward. The thought echoed through Gabe’s mind. He knows he said he wasn’t the type of person to just fly out spontaneously, but that was before he apologized to Mack.
“We’ll be there.”

When they stepped into SAP Center, their nerves heightened. Even though Will was however many feet away from them they felt as if he just knew they were there, and that made unease flow through them naturally.
Gabe had spent the past few days preparing for what he was going to say tonight, and even now he still didn’t know what he was going to. But once again, that was a thought for later, all he wanted to do right now was enjoy watching the game and enjoy having Molly by his side as she had for the past week since she set him straight.
Despite what he told himself, he did think about what he was going to say almost the whole game, during play, during intermission, during timeouts, it was a constant battle of trying to watch the game as he typed away on his phone.
“You know, if you keep stressing about it, it’s only going to make it worse. It might not be as bad as you think it’s going to be.” Molly’s voice cut through all the screaming and cheering after Toffoli scored a goal.
He only answered when the crowd settled again, “I know. Kind of hard to convince my mind of that though.”
“Trust me, I know it is. But sometimes you have to override that thought, Gabe. It’s not going to get easier if you don’t stick up for yourself against yourself.”
“Are you sure you shouldn’t be a writer or some shit?”
“Yeah, almost failed English in high school. Which is why I just come up with the ideas and let my friends write them. Not my strong suit, I just work the camera.”
He gave her a half-smirk, “So you’re the behind-the-scenes guy?”
“Mhm. Always plotting.”
“M’sure you are.”
More cheers rang out and the two turned their attention to where a group of blue jerseys swarmed together on the ice, the clock had ticked down faster than they thought it would, faster than they wished it would.
They sat, watching as most of the fans made their way out of the arena and back to their cars. By the time they found the will to move, only half the arena’s seats were still filled and they were both sure it was just to watch the interview that was happening on the ice.
Will had gotten first star of the game after two goals and two assists, beaming as brightly as he could. The two could tell from where they sat that there was dimness in his eyes, tightness in his voice as he spoke to the interviewer, and stood with a tense figure as he tried to make it through.
It was nice to hear his voice, it was the first time they heard it in person since that day, strictly relying on old voice memos and videos if they wanted to hear it. They hadn’t realized how much they loved getting those from him until they stopped.
They got up out of their seats once he left the ice, making their way down to the tunnel to wait for him. Mack was the first to come out and both of them couldn’t help the disappointment that covered their face when they didn’t see the usual blond mop of curls trailing behind him.
He gave them a small smile once he saw them, bringing Molly into a hug and giving Gabe whatever weird handshake thing boys usually did. Molly let herself smile at the interaction, it was just a step closer to working everything out, and she was proud of him for it.
“It’ll probably be a few before he comes out, he’s just been sitting in there after games until he absolutely has to leave and then he’ll start getting ready to go.”
Gabe let out a low hum in acknowledgment, eyes fluttering back to where he knew his boyfriend could walk out at any minute. Then they fell into an easy conversation, mostly about what they had been doing the past few weeks and other random things that had come up.
“Mack didn’t know what a date was.”
“Like going on a date or…?”
“You two I swear to god. The fruit!”
“Oh. There’s a fruit?”
Will wasn’t sure if he was dreaming or not as he turned the corner, stopping when he caught sight of the three who were laughing about something he couldn’t figure out. Blinking steadily, he pinched himself on the wrist and when the small burst of pain shot through him, he knew for a fact that his girlfriend, his best friend, and his boyfriend were all talking and having a good time like nothing had happened.
He was sure he was angry, but again he didn’t know what he had been feeling these two weeks, everything he felt would just turn numb in the hours after he acknowledged it. He gained the courage to walk the few steps towards them, closing the gap.
Molly saw him first, biting her lip and falling silent as she looked at him; dark circles, eyebags, exhaustion, everything was the same as when she saw Gabe earlier in the week. Gabe and Mack didn’t take long to recognize her silence, following her gaze to where Will stood, clad in his suit and hair wet from the quick shower he took.
“They flew out this morning,” Mack’s voice was soft, like every other time he had tried to speak to Will since everything had happened.
He gave a brief nod, letting his eyes go from Molly to Gabe and then back to Molly and back to Gabe, before settling on his friend again, “I’m ready to go.”
Both Molly and Gabe’s hearts cracked at his cold tone, feeling as if he didn’t care that they were there. Mack placed a handout, stopping Will from walking any further away from them, “Hear him out please.”
“And you know what he has to say?” He kept his volume low, trying not to let the emotion that flooded his voice show.
“He texted me earlier this week, Tuesday,” Mack started, he hadn’t told him about his conversation with Gabe and Molly, or at least until now. “Apologized, for everything. And then we just talked. He really is sorry Will. I don’t think he would’ve reached out to me if he wasn’t.”
Will took in the information, trying to process it but it just floated around in his head like a fly he couldn’t catch. When he looked back over to the two, his tone had softened but he still kept his guard up, “You coming?”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
The car ride to Mack and Will’s apartment was all quiet, no one spoke as turns were made and lights were passed. They pulled into the parking lot of the apartment complex, sitting in heavy silence for a few minutes before getting out of the car.
Molly and Gabe took the stairs while the other two rode the elevator up. They got two flights of stairs in when Molly murmured, “It’s going to be okay, we’re going to be okay.”
“Mhm, I know. Or at least I hope I do.”
They reached their floor a couple of minutes later, walking out of the stairwell to see Mack and Will deep in conversation with each other. It didn’t take long for them to notice the two, letting them follow them to their apartment.
Mack stuck his key in, turning and unlocking the door before pushing it open and letting the three step inside. The four kicked their shoes off and then just stood there awkwardly. Frustration grew in Mack’s head before he eventually was over Gabe being too scared to admit his wrongs and Will being too stubborn to let him speak, “Okay. I’m done with this.”
Eyes fell on him but he ignored their stares and wrapped a hand around both of their arms before leading them towards Will’s room and shoving them in there, “Do not come out until this shit is fixed. You two aren’t the only ones suffering because of this.”
Will and Gabe turned to Molly who stood there nervously, fiddling with her hands and rocking back and forth on her heels. They softened simultaneously, Mack was right, they had put her through enough and it was time they fixed that and made it up to her, but they couldn’t do it without talking it out with each other first.
The door closed and left the two alone in the confines of Will’s bedroom, hoodies and shirts were lying on the ground, takeout containers shoved in the overflowing trashcan, and a heavy, musty smell took over their senses.
“Sorry about the mess.” Will started picking up shirts and throwing them in his laundry basket, his need to stress clean overwhelming him.
Gabe’s hand grabbed ahold of his wrist, stopping him from moving, “Don’t do that, not now. Please.”
He didn’t face him, not yet, staring at his crumbled sheets from when he didn’t even attempt to make his bed this morning. He felt Gabe’s hand move down to his hand, lacing their fingers together. That was when he turned, looking over his face and seeing the tiredness that was written over it, he was sure it matched the tiredness on his own.
He gave him a nod, allowing him to go on, “I’m sorry- I know I’m sorry doesn’t fix anything, let me speak, please.”
Gabe knew that when Will opened his mouth he was going to let out something along the lines of ‘sorry isn’t going to cut it’, he always did. He guided him to sit on the bed before he sat next to them, keeping their fingers intertwined.
“I know what I said was wrong and hurtful, I never should’ve said what I said to Mack and I never should’ve said what I said to you, even though I did mean it, a little bit.” Gabe’s thumb started absentmindedly running over Will’s knuckles, a habit he had gained whenever he had started to become restless or anxious, “And while I am sorry about how I chose to… display my feelings, I’m not going to apologize for how I felt.
“For a while, it was easy to pass the feelings off as jealousy and whatnot but the more and more the two of you hung out and the more and more the two of you were in videos together, I think it made me realize how much I missed just having you as a teammate and how different it was not to have you around.
“You’ve never done anything to make me feel like you would cheat on me or whatever and I should’ve recognized that a lot earlier. I also should’ve acknowledged you’re point of view on this. I know Mack has been there for you since the beginning of the season and I know how much he means to you and I shouldn’t have let my feelings and insecurities get in the way of your friendship.”
He took a deep breath, unsure if he had said enough or if he should keep going. But before he could let his mind spiral into more thoughts and choices, he heard Will’s voice and the soft squeeze of his hand, “I’m sorry too.”
Will was overcome with emotions from Gabe’s apology and honestly, he didn’t even have to say all of it to know he meant it, from the moment he found out that he had reached out to Mack on his own accord he had forgiven him, maybe even before that.
“I know that no matter what I say is going to live up to that,” the two let out wet chuckles before he continued. “But I am sorry for saying that you were acting like a child. I also should’ve seen things from your perspective and I didn’t, and it probably would’ve made a lot more sense if I had.”
He let himself reach up to run a hand through Gabe’s hair which made him instantly melt into his touch. He listened as Will continued speaking but most of the words fell deaf upon his years. He should be listening, he knew that, but he was just so grateful to actually talk to them that the topic at hand didn’t really matter.
Meanwhile, Mack and Molly sat in the living room where Molly was critiquing a shitty movie he had put on, it was one of her favorite stress-relieving tactics.
“How’re you holding up?”
She sighed, nibbling on her bottom lip, “Okay.”
“You’re not.”
“I know.” She curled her knees into her chest, fidgeting with her earrings, “Do you know how hard it is to make two 19-year-olds speak to each other?”
Mack laughed, bringing her into a side hug, “Do you know how hard it is having to deal with a mopey and frustrated Will?”
“Probably the same as dealing with an insecure and guilt-ridden Gabe.”
They heard the click of the door, heads snapping towards it to see the two walk out of the bedroom still hand-in-hand. When she saw it, she smiled and let out a sigh of relief, making her way over to them. She brought them into a hug, her grasp firm, “Please tell me you two are okay.”
“We are sweetheart,” Gabe’s hand brushed the strands of hair that fell into her face behind her ear, pressing a kiss to her head, “We are.”
“I’m sorry we put you in the middle of this, we never should’ve done it and-”
“If one of you apologizes to me one more time, I’m seriously going to lose my fucking mind more than I already have. And if you two ever and I mean ever fight like that again, I’m breaking up with you.”
Will nodded, kissing her temple, “I don’t doubt it, sweet girl. I don’t.”
Mack stood from the couch, making his way to his room to give the three their privacy. He only made it halfway before a call of his voice stopped him in his tracks, turning to see Gabe staring at him. He raised his eyebrow in question, “Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
He just nodded in response, continuing his trek to his room. Will watched the exchange before looking back down where Molly stood, bringing the two of them closer together. At that moment, for the first time in two weeks, all three of them knew that they were going to be okay.

“Molls?”
Gabe’s soft voice drew Molly out of her thoughts from where she sat at her desk, working on a new film idea. Her knees were curled up into her chest, her feet resting in front of her on the chair with her head resting against her knees. She looked over at him, furrowing her eyebrows at the uncharacteristically quiet tone of his voice, “Yeah?”
When she turned to face him, she was met with a slight pout on his face, wet hair falling into his face, and one of Will’s shirts adorning his body, all wrinkled. He was holding his phone and Molly could only assume he was watching TikToks or Instagram Reels again. However, as she looked at him, she could see the sadness in his eyes, the longing that lingered with it.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” She didn’t move, not until she knew that Gabe was 100% upset.
It took him a few moments to respond to her, but when he did her heart cracked, “I miss him.”
She uncurled herself from her spot on her chair, making her way over to her bed to bring him into her chest and run her fingers through his hair. She knew he had been feeling this way for a few weeks, missing Will and wanting nothing more than to hop on a plane to San Jose and be curled up between him and her.
It wasn’t often that Gabe let her or Will see the emotional side of him despite them being together for a few months now and friends for well over a year. He hated feeling vulnerable in general, much less in front of people he cared so much about what they thought of him.
His phone caught her eye, the same flickers of light, the same colors flashing like clockwork. She looked over at it, seeing a video of Mack and Will replay over and over again. She sighed and leaned down to kiss Gabe’s head, holding him a little tighter.
She knew this ran deeper than just him missing their boyfriend, he missed his friend, his best friend, his teammate. She knew that Gabe seeing Will with Mack, seeing him so close with someone that wasn’t him, hurt. They had been teammates first, they had gotten coffee before games together, laughed their asses off as Will tried to use Google Maps, talked and decompressed together after tough games, and all of it was over in a second.
Molly’s voice was soft as she spoke, “He misses us too, Gabe. I promise you.”
“He hasn’t texted in three days, Molls,” Gabe’s voice cracked, “He hasn’t called in 9 days, hasn’t FaceTimed us in 12. Why won’t he talk to us? Why hasn’t he called us?”
Molly couldn’t even get a word out before he broke down, drenching her sweatshirt in tears he hadn’t let go of in weeks. All she could do was hold him, leaving kisses on his head and whisper sweet nothings to him, trying to calm him down.
It worked eventually, 20 minutes later he was fast asleep against her chest, snoring softly. She released a deep breath of relief, reaching for her phone in her bedside caddy. She maneuvered her way into her texts, clicking on her messages with Will that she hardly used since the three had their group chat.
Will was in New York with the team, and she could only hope that he was back at the hotel or on the bus, anywhere but on the plane. She didn’t bother sending him a text, immediately clicking on his contact and the call button, turning down the volume, and bringing it to her ear.
A few seconds later Will’s laugh rang out from the speaker causing tears to sting in her eyes. She hadn’t realized how much she had also missed him, she had been so caught up in classes and film ideas and filming, that she never gave herself the time to even think about missing him. Maybe she had done that on purpose, maybe she didn’t, but that didn’t matter now.
“Will?”
If Will hadn’t known that he clicked the accept button on his girlfriend’s call and was actively listening to her instead of his teammates now, he probably wouldn’t have even heard her voice due to how soft it was. Though, because he was, he could also hear the slight crack in her voice that he unfortunately knew all too well. She was sad and it took everything in him not to blow up to find out what was wrong.
Taking a deep breath, he waved his teammates off and walked out of their hotel room and into his own, sitting on the bed, “Hey sweetheart, what’s up?”
Molly’s breath was shaky before responding, “It’s Gabe.”
“What? What’s wrong? Is he hurt? I didn’t get a tweet or notification about it. Is he sick? Nervous?”
“Will, Will, Will, please calm down. He’s fine.” She reassured him, easing his worries a bit.
“Then what is it?”
“He just- he really misses you. And I think more in just an ‘I miss my boyfriend’ kind of way.”
“In what way then?”
“I think it’s like a ‘I miss my best friend and my teammate and I miss playing with him and being by his side every day’ kind of way. I think it’s all just catching up to him now.”
Will frowned, staying silent for a couple of minutes. Thoughts raced through his head, not stopping for a moment.
“I also don’t think it’s helped that we haven’t heard from you in a few days and he saw the media things you made with Mack. I’m not accusing you of anything Will, I know you’re busy, we know you’re busy with everything. We just miss you, s’all.”
She was met with more silence causing her to bite her lip nervously, redirecting her attention to the boy who still slept soundly against her, running her hands through his hair as a distraction. This proved to be a good distraction because her mind barely registered Will’s mumbled ‘I’ll see you soon’ before the end call tone echoed in her ears.
She froze, blinking at the wall in front of her. She pulled the phone away from her ear, trying to rack her brain to find out if she heard him correctly or not. Gabe shifted against her, mumbling something and blinking up at her, “What time s’it?”
“Huh?”
He furrowed his eyebrows, bringing his hand up to her his eyes to rid the sleep from them, “I asked what time it was. You okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Yeah, I’m fine, just tired. Had a weird thought, that's all. C’mon, I’m tired. Let’s go back to sleep, okay?”
Gabe nodded, snuggling back into her and closing his eyes, falling back to sleep swiftly. Molly let her thoughts run around in her mind, tracing shapes on her boyfriend’s back in an effort to get herself to rest as well.

Will arrived in Boston at 4 in the morning, walking briskly through the airport towards the exit, looking between his phone and in front of him. He had always told himself to not make impulsive decisions, and until this moment, he was doing a pretty good job at following that.
While he packed his bag, his brain screamed at him to put everything back and lay down in the hotel room bed and fall asleep, but his heart won over his brain this time, and he knew he had to get Boston sooner rather than later. He gave Mack a rushed explanation before running out of his room and down the steps of his hotel, catching the Uber he had called 20 minutes earlier.
The whole flight to Boston he was anxious, knee bouncing, hands shaking, he looked like a mess. Thankfully the flight was only an hour, an hour and he would have his boyfriend and his girlfriend in his arms again, reassuring them that he cared for them and missed them as much as they missed him. Maybe he would even finally say what he had been wanting to say for weeks now.
His mind was so crowded, that he barely acknowledged the fact that the Uber he was now in had stopped just a few minutes away from his destination. He thanked the driver endlessly, making sure to tip him as much as he could before grabbing his bag and suitcase, and practically running down the sidewalks of his old campus.
He cursed to himself as he came to a halt outside of his girlfriend’s dorm, knowing he wouldn’t be getting in unless someone was walking out of the building or someone was walking in. Thankfully, luck was on his side today as he saw a familiar face walking towards him. He had known him from a few classes he had with him, and someone that Molly had even talked to a few times before.
He had no problems with letting Will in, talking with him as they walked up to Molly’s floor. Once they reached it, they said their goodbyes and Will headed down the wall, stopping in front of her door. He took a deep breath before knocking, bouncing on his heels as he waited for an answer.
Inside, Molly groaned at the noise, turning and shifting on her bed. In the middle of the night, Gabe and her had moved, so now Gabe’s arms were wrapped tightly around her, keeping her against his chest. She hoped that whoever was at her door would go away and simply buried her head back into the crook of Gabe’s neck, trying to go back to sleep.
Her efforts were short-lived when another knock rang through her dorm room, eliciting a louder groan from her. She peeled herself away from her boyfriend, slowly sliding off the bed and walking over to the door. The coldness of her dorm floor caused her to jump slightly, her tired mind stopping her from putting slippers on before.
She didn’t bother to look through the peephole, yanking the door open and staring tiredly at the figure in front of her, “What do you want?”
The laugh she heard immediately woke her up, snapping her eyes open and blinking rapidly, “Will?”
“Hey, sweetheart.”
She wasted no time hugging him, wrapping her arms around his waist, inhaling his scent, “I can’t believe you're here, what’re you doing here?”
“I came to see the two of you of course, why else would I be here?” He pulled away slightly, brushing her tangled hair out of her face and smiling down at her, “I missed you two so much.”
“Molls?”
The two turned towards the voice, watching as Gabe lazily sat up and ran his fingers through his hair. Molly couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped her lips at the sleepy expression on his face as he blinked his eyes open.
Gabe’s eyes opened slowly, looking around the room in search of his girlfriend. Hearing her laugh, his eyes fell on the open door and the two people standing by it. His eyes adjusted to the darkness, the second figure coming into view, “Will?”
“Hey, handsome. How’s it going?”’
“What the fuck are you doing here man? You’re supposed to be in New York.” Despite the annoyance and confusion in his tone, Gabe hopped off the bed and walked over to the two of them, bringing his boyfriend into a hug.
Will stumbled slightly at the force Gabe had used in his hug, but kept them upright nonetheless, hugging him back just as tight, “Had to see my loves didn’t I?”
Molly rolled her eyes at the nickname, a fond smile on her face as she stepped away to let them have a moment.
Gabe and Will stayed in the hug for more than a few minutes, Will kicking the door closed with his foot as they stood there. They barely exchanged any words before they pulled away, Will leaving a kiss on Gabe’s shoulder.
They climbed into bed alongside Molly, Gabe staying in the middle of them. After a few minutes of silence, Gabe spoke up, “I didn’t mean to not call or text, I just- I’ve been really busy and stressed and everything. I promise I’ll do better, I never want you guys to feel like I don’t miss you, because I do. So so so much.”
Gabe nodded against his chest, mumbling a reply that the two of them barely caught. They just shrugged it off, placing kisses on his head and cuddling against him. The quiet atmosphere settled around them, aiding in the comfort the three were surrounded by. It felt nice, to be back together in bed and cuddling, it was their favorite thing to do.
“I need to tell you something.”
Both Gabe and Molly’s heads looked towards Will, eyes shining with curiosity, “What is it?”
Will swallowed nervously, “It might be too early but I’ve been thinking about it for a couple weeks now and I just, I need to say it before I think too much about it and never say it-”
“Will!”
“Right, sorry. I um- I love you two.”
The two blinked at him, frozen as Molly’s grip on Will’s hand tightened. Will looked back at them, the anxious feeling creeping up on him. Maybe it was too soon, maybe he did just screw up everything and he had just gotten back to them.
“I love you two too.”
Will smiled at his girlfriend’s soft voice, leaning over Gabe to kiss her gently. Gabe pouted, grumbling, “Hey, what about me?”
The two pulled away from each other, eyes moving to look at their boyfriend. His face lit up as their attention fell on him, “I love you two more.”

Jamie walked through the apartment door and was immediately hit by the smell of cookies. His eyes landed on his girlfriend, who was standing in the middle of their kitchen, her apron loosely tied around her waist, hair pulled up in a ponytail, and flour covering her head to toe.
He chuckled at the sight, wrapping an arm around her waist as he came to stand next to her, “Hey.”
She flashed him a grin, standing on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek, “Hi baby. Just in time, try these.”
Bella handed her boyfriend one of the many cookies that were on the cooling rack before moving to place another tray in the oven. He hummed as he took a bite, nodding, “S’good. How many have you made so far?”
“Only a few…”
Jamie gave her a knowing look and she blushed sheepishly, “Okay maybe a lot more than a few but-”
“C’mon, lemme shower and then I’ll help you decorate them.”
“Really?” An excited gleam shone in her eyes, staring up at him.
“Yeah, ‘course. I’ll be back.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
When Jamie exited their bedroom, Bella was still in just an organized mess as she was in before. Except now, multiple cookie tins were sitting on the kitchen counter, another batch of cookie dough was in the mixer, and about two dozen cookies sat in front of her with different sprinkles and icing to the side.
He raised his eyebrows in amusement, standing on the other side of the counter across from her, “Alright boss. What do you want me to do?”
He held his hands up in surrender when she glared at him, his all too familiar cheeky grin on his face. She handed him a cookie shaped like a gingerbread man, “This is your practice cookie. Mess this up and you’re out.”
“I didn’t know we were taking this so seriously.”
“We’re not, I just don’t want you to make a mess. So if you even so much as fuck anything here up while doing that cookie, I’m putting you in timeout.”
“Is that a promise?”
“Jamie!”
He laughed, already going to work on the cookie he’d been given. Bella on the other hand just watched him carefully in between checking on the cookies that were in the oven and starting to cut the next batch of dough into circles.
It was when she was pulling the tray out of the oven that Jamie finished, beaming with pride as he showed her, “Look!”
She placed the tray on the stove, took the oven mitts off, and threw them on the counter before looking over. She nodded, a small smile on her face, “It looks good Jam.”
“Yeah?”
“Mhm, pick whichever one you want to do,” she gestured to the counter, “These are the last ones. The other ones I just have to sprinkle white sugar on them and then they’ll be done.”
Jamie got back to work, making sure each cookie looked nice and that he wouldn’t make a mess. He’d look up occasionally, smiling fondly as his girlfriend placed the other cookies in their own tins.
“What’re these even for?”
“The team. Mom and I always made cookies every year and then in college, I gave some to Trev and he shared them with the team and then people started begging for them, and now… it’s sort of just tradition, I guess.” She explained, redoing her ponytail.
“So basically, it’s Trevor’s fault?”
She giggled, taking a seat next to him on one of the stools, leaning her head on his shoulder, “Yeah. But it worked out, ended up winning the guys over and now we’re close. Food is the way to a man’s stomach, I suppose.”
She grabbed a cookie, handing it to him, “Here. Made this one for you.”He looked down, seeing the words ‘Trevor’s Boyfriend’ written across it. He huffed, whining slightly, “Hey.”

Molly wasn’t sure what it was, the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the getting back to school, the winter depression, but she could just feel like something was going to happen. She could feel the uneasiness in her stomach brew throughout the past week, sitting in the middle of class or reading a new book in her dorm.
Gabe knew she had felt off the whole week, keeping an eye on her at every possible second since she arrived back on campus. He had already been there a few days prior having had a game that Friday and Saturday before everyone was due back. And maybe it was because he knew her too well and had been watching her that he knew she was feeling off, or maybe it was because the same stomach-churning feeling his girlfriend had he had too, but he would never say that out loud.
The two drove in silence to TD Gardens, it would be their first time seeing Will since New Year’s and while they had gone longer than two weeks without each other, the two weeks had seemed like two years. With everything the two were feeling, the thought of just seeing their boyfriend in person felt like a huge relief off their shoulders.
Gabe looked over at Molly, a small smile growing on his face, “Hey.”
“Hi. You good?”
“Mhm, just excited, y’know. Hockey.”
“Yeah, I’m sure that’s what you’re excited about.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
Standing in the tunnel after the game, Gabe held onto Molly’s hand anxiously waiting for Will to finish up in the locker room. The sinking feeling in both of their stomachs only grew during the game despite trying to focus on the sound of skating and the puck sliding along the ice for the past two and a half hours.
Gabe’s mind raced with thoughts of the unread text messages on his phone from his teammates, the unfinished assignments he had already collected in the week of being back at school, and the mess his bedroom was, everything was just piling up on him and he didn’t know how much more he could take.
Will walked out from behind the corner only a few minutes later, and just to Gabe’s luck, Mack was just a few feet behind them. He heard both of their laughs first, eyes landing on their figures seconds later. He watched as his boyfriend talked animatedly about something, what it was he had no clue, but he could feel the tension release from his body just at the sight of him.
Molly could feel the pit forming in the pit of her stomach as soon as she saw one of her best friends behind her boyfriend because as much as she loved Mack and loved talking to him, she knew her other boyfriend did not return the same sentiment.
She squeezed Gabe’s hand, trying to provide him with an extra layer of comfort as the two drew closer to them. Will’s gaze snapped over to them, a wide grin breaking out on his face. He didn’t say any words before he hugged Molly, whispering a soft greeting in her ear before pulling away and doing the same with his boyfriend.
However, Gabe’s hug lasted substantially longer than Molly’s, tight grip around Will’s waist as he toyed with the edge of his suit jacket. Will’s eyebrows furrowed, rubbing Gabe’s back in slow circles, murmuring, “You okay, handsome?”
He could feel Gabe nod from where his head was placed on his shoulder and didn’t say anything more, falling into silence as he just held him close. Gabe sighed, finally feeling at ease as he stood there, but his relaxed state went as quick as it came once Macklin’s voice made its way to his ears.
He tensed only slightly, still trying to drown out the talking that not only annoyed him but overwhelmed him. As the three continued talking, Gabe’s mind swirled into what was quickly becoming a storm of thoughts that he wished he didn’t have.
“No, I swear! Will just walked up to him like it was no big deal and he-”
“God do you ever shut up!” Gabe snapped, pulling away from the comfort that was the crook of Will’s neck, eyes looking Mack up and down.
Mack’s mouth shut, almost shying away from the volume of his voice. Will and Molly stared at their boyfriend agape, blinking slowly and then rapidly as if trying to figure out if what just happened had really happened.
“Gabe…” Will and Mack’s voices were soft as they spoke.
In turn, their voices at the same time only made Gabe grow more annoyed, “And of course, you two are talking at the same time!”
“I didn’t-”
“No of course you didn’t, because perfect Macklin Celebrin could never do anything wrong.” He cut him off, huffing as he crossed his arms.
“Gabe that isn’t fair and you know it. He was just trying to make conversation with you-” Will started, wrapping his hand around his bicep as he dragged him away from Mack and Molly.
Gabe’s yells turned into whispered harshness as he stared at his boyfriend, “He is always around Will, even if it’s just the three of us. Is it too much to ask to have you and Molly to myself for once?”
“No but you could at least be nice to him, Gabe. He is my friend, one of the only ones I have out in California. I am not saying you have to be all buddy-buddy with him but at least he’s trying, which is more than I can say about you.”
Tears formed at the base of Gabe’s eyes, but he refused to let them fall, “I am not going to try to be friends with someone who is trying to steal my boyfriend.”
Will tilted his head back in frustration, a loud groan coming out of him, “He is not trying to steal me, Gabe. And even if he was, which he isn’t, I am yours and Molly’s, which is something that will never change.”
The two just stared at each other for a few minutes before Will spoke again, “You’re acting like a spoiled fucking child who isn’t getting their way.”
This time, Gabe was unable to stop the tear from making its way down his face, wiping at it harshly as soon as he felt it, “That’s not… fair.”
“Oh so now it’s not fair? After what you said to him? Spare me the emotions, Gabe. I’m not dealing with this anymore. You need to get over whatever you have against him and stop acting like a child.”
Mack and Molly stood a ways away from them, watching the heated exchange. The girl spared a glance up at her friend, a frown easily taking over her face, “He didn’t mean it, Mack-”
“No… he did. And that’s fine. I’m fine. Honestly, Molls. It’s okay that he doesn’t like me, I just don’t want to ruin your guys’ relationship.”
“You aren’t ruining anything, I promise. It’s just been a hard few months for him and I know that is no excuse for what he said but-”
“Molly it’s okay. I will live and you do not have to apologize for him or for anything, okay? I’m going to head out, tell Will I’ll try to hold the team off long enough before they leave.”
She only nodded, eyes drifting back to watch her boyfriends argue. But somewhere between them starting and stopping their conversation, Gabe had disappeared and left an angry and upset Will by himself. Mack gave her a side hug, walking past Will and giving him a pat on the shoulder before leaving.
Molly approached him, stepping in front of him and taking his hands into her own, “What happened?”
She skipped over the question she would’ve liked to ask, Everything okay? Because she knew it wasn’t okay, it was the first real fight the three of them had ever had and it was a huge one. She heard him sigh, eyes searching his face for any telltale sign of what happened or what he said but she came up empty.
“I said things, he said things… I don’t know.” He ran a hand over his face, trying to sort through his thoughts.
“Were yours worse or were his?”
“I was being pretty shitty, but he was being…” He trailed off, unsure of what actually to say. While Gabe had said equally worse things, Will couldn’t help the regret and guilt that took over his mind.
“Do you-”
“Go. I don’t want him out on the street alone despite how mad at him I am, and I definitely do not want you two driving in the middle of the night. I have to get back to the team, we have the flight soon, gotta be in Nashville.” He rambled, unable to keep himself from everything he was thinking about.
She rose onto her tip-toes, giving him a kiss on the cheek, “I love you, and Gabe loves you too-” She paused when she saw the hurt and anger flash in his eyes at his name, “Yeah, okay.”
“I love you too, Molls. And I’m sorry.”
She shook her head, “Don’t be. Not to me at least and do not forget that he also said things that weren’t right, Will. You have a right to feel angry just as much as he does.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
When Molly found Gabe, he was sitting against a wall, head in his hands and she could hear the soft sobs that came from him. Her steps were slow and deliberate, trying not to spook him. Her efforts were vain when his head jerked up at the brush of her hand against his shoulder. He only cried harder when he saw her.
“Gabe take a deep breath f’me okay?” She kneeled next to him as best as she could, ignoring the slight pain of her knees digging into the sidewalk's concrete. Her one hand brought his head to her chest and tangled in his hair while the other was placed comfortingly on his back.
“I’m sorry.” He hiccuped, trying to calm himself down.
She sighed as she repeated her earlier words, “Don’t be. Not to me at least.”

i’ve stared at it and thought about it enough to finally answer it
so yes, yes i can
Luke 100% accidentally just gives you hickeys. Random thought at 1 in the morning but he’ll just have his face tucked in your neck and the next thing you know is you have to invest in colour corrector again. He doesn’t even know he does it he just starts doing it while you’re both relaxing after a long day.
Anyway! Do with this what you will!
this has just been sitting in my inbox for ages and i finally cleared everything out tonight and i'm so glad to dig this up from the depths of the clutterness.
but i will totally agree with you !
you would wake up and start getting ready for work, prying his arms off of you and heading towards the bathroom. it would take you a minute to look in the mirror but once you did you r eyes would narrow on the very obvious bruise on your neck.
after you've showered and gotten as ready as you can before you start doing your makeup, you would reach for the spot where your color corrector should've been only to find out you were out. all feelings of letting luke sleep in after his game last night left your body and you were shaking him awake.
of course, he would grumble out protests of being awoken but you couldn't find it in you to care when you had to be at work in an hour and you hadn't even started your makeup or had breakfast yet.
he would apologize but the two of you both knew he didn't really mean it. somehow he would end up coaxing you to stay home, muttering something along the lines of 'if you don't want people to see it then you should just stay home.'
he would promise that he would go out later to replenish your color corrector supply but for now, he would get you to change back into your pajamas and come back and lay with him
