 friedrich  von  rothbart  is  greed  incarnate  disguised  as  a  righteous  man.    he  is  greediest  for  two  things,    and  his  expressed  reasoning  for  wanting  these  things  is  far  from  the  truth:    the  crown,    and  lady  odette  de  cygne.    he  believes  odette  is  the  key  to  his  rightful  crown.

 an  excerpt  from  rothbart’s  journals:

 i  write  this  as  a  man  wronged.    i  write  this  as  a  victim  of  a  greater  power  when  i  should  be  its  master.    god  has  failed  me,    and  i  resort  to  other  means  of  taking  what  is  rightfully  mine.    does  she  not  know  how  she  tempts  me?    the  eve  to  my  adam    —    how  i  long  to  break  her  skin  with  my  teeth,    my  forbidden  fruit,    my  granatapfel.    she  denies  us  twice,    denies  my  odile  the  mother  she  needs    —    i,    a  father  not  fit  to  raise  an  unruly  girl  all  on  his  own!    she  does  this  with  glee,    as  much  as  i  wish  this  to  be  a  farce.    she  smiles  when  i  turn  my  back  in  sorrow,    tortures  me  to  her  satisfaction.    my  final  act  of  affection  will  not  go  unnoticed,    will  not  be  denied.    she  will  beg  for  my  hand  in  marriage,    plead  to  be  the  idol  gothel  odile  deserves,    as  no  girl  should  grow  up  without  her  mother!
