Yuuri sneaks out of his room in the early morning hours and makes his way toward JJ's dorm room. He keeps his steps light as he approaches and quietly hangs a small pink and red bag of honmei chocolates from the door knob. Inside the bag aside from the candy is a card with words scribbled in hiragana along with his name. After a second glance Yuuri hurries back on towards his room, fully intending on hiding for the entirety of valentine's day.

JJ doesn’t hear the noise as he lays sleeping in bed. In fact, it’s his roommate that finds it, but they’re well aware of the fact that their significant other wouldn’t pull something like this, so they hand it off to JJ once he wakes. JJ is surprised, but the sender is obvious. Yuuri. Of course.

It only takes a moment for excitement to grow as he flops back on his bed after waking, the bag clutched in his hand. He immediately moves to call up the person he’s found for translating Japanese, but then decides against it once he realizes the contents might say something the world shouldn’t know. He’ll ask Yuuri later. That will be fine. Still. The card is appreciated. The chocolates are wonderful. But the thing JJ finds the sweetest is the thought, the intention. It’s nice to be remembered, and it’s nice to receive something just for him.

He pulls up his phone and sends a text, not really expecting a reply and not minding that at all.

Yuuri quietly leaves a card tapped to JJ's door that says, in hiragana, "Merry Christmas I hope your wishes come true." He knows that it's unlikely JJ can read it, which he's counting on.

Fortunately for Yuuri, JJ can’t read hiragana, but unfortunately for Yuuri, JJ is a stubborn guy. He doesn’t like not knowing things. He doesn’t appreciate being told he can’t do something whether it be intentional or unintentional such as Yuuri’s ‘challenge’ of giving him something not meant for him to understand. JJ did find out what it meant after scouring the internet and playing around with the keyboard in some attempt to be able to type the characters written.

It took him a good while to figure out it was Japanese not Chinese, and even longer to match the symbols on the card to the ones on his screen, but he does it. He does it, and he’s surprised to discover the meaning. For a good part of the time he had thought the card would be a practical joke, some upperclassman writing insults to him in a language they knew he wouldn’t understand. It wouldn’t have been the first time which he doesn’t really mind. JJ just assumes it’s because they’re jealous since not everyone can be as great as him.

But, no, it’s a nice, little, heartfelt card. 

It’s different. He can’t say he minds.
