He really is just hovering there, menacingly. All he offers to that is a chuckle.

A break from the norm never bodes well. A pet-name or two is...eerie, but status-quo. Did he imply things were to play out differently today? Or is he really on a break, and will simply live and let live?

"You would've had something on your résumé outside of your occupation as a mere replacement ranger, at least," he drawls, containing the jargon thread the little robot had been using. "Once can never have too much experience tacked on. Haven't you ever wondered what you could be outside of that?"

His voice drops to a soft timbre, and he stretches out his fidgety claws in a show of nonchalance, but he's getting antsy, make no mistake. He can practically feel the unease radiating off XR by this point, and it takes all his willpower not to pounce.

He hasn't come closer, not yet.

“I don’t know what’s creepier, that you referred to me by name or that you are just standing there ominously.”

XR shudders with unease as he hears his name spoken from the embodiment of his darkest fear. It sends a chill down his wires, causing anxiety to gnaw at his circuits for a brief moment. Talk about extra effort for spookiness. He didn’t need to get unnerved by the sound of his own name, thank you very much.

NOS-4-A2 is playing a twisted game and XR is acutely aware of the malicious intentions. It was just to lower his guard and when the space ranger least expected it, the monster would leap. It was only a matter of time.

The relentless drumming in the background certainly adds to the tension and is certainly not making his nerves go haywire! Nope, not at all.

“Still haunted by my absence, I see. I’m almost flattered. I mean suuuure, we did have some good times at your ‘job’  but let’s not pretend it was all sunshine and rainbows. Unbearable working hours, not even a decent salary and don’t get me started on the work-life balance.”

XR decides to play the game, because why not? He can humor his old dark master for a while. Not like he had much of a choice in the matter.

But the idea of monster’s little helper bothering his dear brother? XL being frustrated about the former ranger?  That was fun to imagine - not that he’s currently doing that. He shouldn’t be encouraging that.

wondering how I could incorporate Nos here into other mediums. As a robot he fits pretty well into other science fiction properties, keeping all the same trimmings --- but seeing Raggedy Anne and toons makes me wonder how he'd fair in these worlds. Maybe he was built but some maniacal toy maker, and exists to steal the lifeforce from other toys...?

As for the Digital Circus, perhaps he's a kind of virus or corrupted NPC, aware of what he is but intent on destroying other digital entities? Or a typical vampire boss battle that grew beyond his programming? (Again, not too different from his canon role, after all, a robot's mind IS programming.)

So you want to inflict some painful revenge on XR and eat him alive. As a Space Ranger, he probably has a lot of enemies.What if someone gets to end him before you? Would that be frustrating since that's your little tin of snack chips? He was yours first and you came before any other villain.

Play into his ego, why don't you.

"Trust me. I've taken care of it."

With one exception --- XL. Villains have a certain etiquette. No, he'd never bow to the old honour among thieves nonsense, but certain villains had...archnemisis. His...brother got first pick.

And Nos-4-A2 hardly wanted XR was his archnemisis, officially.

"He's more of a...designated victim. Most villains of note know not to mess with my scores. But if some lackey or even a mishap robs me of the kill, well, I'll be irritated. I'd simply need to take them instead."

🗣 Yeets you NOS & Woundwort

When I was a kid, Woundwort was a thing of nightmares, let me tell you. His grisly face kept me up a night, no joke, him and that story about the Black Rabbit. Woundwort's a fascinating character. Somebody whose smart and pragmatic about his evil rule. I've probably said it before, but its impressive that he's a foil to both Bigwig and Hazel, two drastically different characters. He has Bigwig's strength and Hazel's smarts and leadership, and yet falls short of both of them. He's even a bit of foil to other characters, like Cowslip (his background as a human 'pet') and when it comes to the TV series, Pipkin, Campion and the Black Rabbit himself.

He shares qualities with all of them and the story says: here's how that can go wrong. Heck, every one of our major heroes can look at Woundwort and see the worst version of himself staring back, and that to me is impressive. Not to mention I appreciate a villain that is considered a genius, yet has such gaps in it simply down to ideology. He loses because he can't fathom certain things. He's a risk taker; he breaks the Rabbit Rules just like our heroes do, but he's missing the will to let some things be. Woundwort is brilliant, and that's what made him so dangerous. That and how close he was to redemption.

All right, time for Nos 4 A2. I'll shamelessly admit that he was what got me back into Buzz Lightyear after nearly forgetting about it. I watched episodes out of context as a kid, and didn't remember the names of the characters, then I saw a cool villain and started re-watching it, haha. I like how they didn't go with the typical 'vampire accent' for him. And let's be honest, I just think he's neat. A robot vampire who feasts on energy instead of blood? So simple, but darn do they really go all out. Cartoon creators could get away with a LOT of gore by waving their hands and saying: its ok! it's robots! (Samurai Jack, looking at you.) I miss villains who are allowed to be really menacing.

"Oh yes, Daddy Dearest."

Honestly, he used the term as a mockery: as shallow and false as Zurg's grovelling display when his back was to the wall. A desperate bid to stir up some shred of loyalty, of sentimentality.

"I suppose if you want to be technical or heartfelt you could put it that way. Alas, I was built as a weapon, a homage of Zurg's admittedly ingenious skills in design. But an idea is easy to create. Execution is harder, and that was my doing. I grew bored of Zurg and his posturing, and he grew bored of my insolence. "

"He boasts that he unleashed one of the worst scourges on the Galaxy, but make no mistake, it isn't out of pride. He wants his fellow villains to believe that he lets me do what I want; rather than admit controlling me was beyond him."

And indeed, the hallway before them did resemble a gaping maw of eternal darkness, but it was truly homey once you got past the vague outlines of robotic bodies lining the floor.

"I won't even ferry you along like a parcel this time. I'm letting you walk with me on your own two wheels, like a civilized robot. Why not humor me?"

Maybe the wisest move would be not to antagonize the energy vampire in any way, but he was not always known for smart decisions.

Honestly? Killing sounds much nicer than the dreadful alternative. That’s what made him terrifying in the first place. If he went for a swift and destructive attack like he does with all of his prey, it wouldn’t be so bad. Draining him slowly? Recharge him? Do it all over again? That was circuits frying.

“Didn’t took ya for the merciful type or give up easily type.”

Nobody was here, nor would they be here for a while. It presents the perfect opportunity. That he wouldn’t even seize the moment was odd - unless he was actually bluffing? That’s what XR can’t stand about his worst nightmare, the energy vampire was hard to read. There was no telling what he would do next. Everything was always unpredictable.

Room for rescue? XR hardly thinks so. It might be a bit of cynical view but he does not hold much faith in anybody else when it comes to NOS-4-A2. His boss can hardly take him. He saved the day. If it were not for Savy, he would be toast. They needed the help of a hippie to actually defeat him. You know the drill.

“Uh-huh. You know as well as I do that I got lucky and was protected by the plot armor, nothing more.”

XR shrugs.

“I mean, yeah, but if your thingy thing ever becomes defective - feel free to inform me?” XR adds with a nervous grin. Hey, he can’t help being cocky, alright?

he has several phrases, ready to go. a chide, or a smug insult. Even now, with his servos scorching with hunger, a part of him bristles at the insinuation that he’s giving up on anything. 

He liked playing with his food.

But there was only so many ways said food could play him for a fool.

And he was getting tired of XR’s patented sass. Plot armor? What a strange phrase, implies he’d be anything more than a side-character. Nos-4-A2 loves the villain architype, he leaned into it, adored being the main antagonist of a story now spanning the galaxy: he’d quickly cemented himself as a new being of legend.

With both hands he seized the robot by either shoulder, the noise like a trash can lid being bent by a truck wheel.

“I am the new age of folklore,” he growled, his voice near lost to the distorted howl that layered over it like an echo.

“You are going to be a foot-note at best.”
