"During the ten years that [Margaret of France] was Queen of Hungary, there were several important changes at court implemented, directly or indirectly. First, Margaret brought with her not only several knights who would become landholders in Hungary, but also French troubadours, offering a rare glimpse into the musical tastes of the Hungarian queens which would not be known in more detail until the fifteenth century. Margaret’s time as queen has the earliest evidence for a household of the queen separate from and independent of the king’s household. While none of Margaret’s charters survive from her time as queen of Hungary, two are known from just before her marriage with Béla III; of those, one even survives in its original format. Her one surviving charter shows that she was the first queen of Hungary to have used a seal of some kind. While neither charter has a sealing clause, the back of the surviving charter had several white silk threads attached to it, indicating that originally a seal was attached. Regrettably, it is unknown whether it was her own seal or whether she made use of someone else’s."
During her time as queen, Margaret is known from one incident related to the Third Crusade that shows she clearly understood strategies related to gift giving. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (r. 1158–1190) was received by the King and Queen of Hungary while passing through on his way to the Holy Land. Béla and Margaret greeted the Emperor at Esztergom before proceeding to Óbuda and then going to Csepel Island for a hunting expedition. Arnold of Lübeck records how the King gave two silos full of flour to the Emperor and his army, while the queen gave him a lavish traveling tent. Arnold describes the tent as being lined with scarlet wool and taking up three wagons when it was dismantled. Inside the tent, there were four rooms: one contained an ivory throne and another contained a poster bed curtained with fabric covered with white hunting dogs. Since the ivory throne and scarlet wool were imported and incredibly costly, they would have made a fitting gift not only for the Holy Roman Emperor, but also the one of the leaders of the Third Crusade.
However, after the Queen made the gift, she then asked the emperor for a favor in return. She asked Frederick I to release Prince Géza, the king’s brother, from captivity. Géza had been the principle instigator of many plots and coups against Béla III and at this point, he had been imprisoned for eleven years. Margaret’s request may sound counterproductive, but this was actually a clever way for the Hungarian court to get rid of a troublesome, problematic rival. Unable to resist the intercession of his wife and the request of his imperial guest, Béla III gave Géza two thousand knights and charged him with the task of guiding the Emperor and the German Crusaders. The King emerged from the situation behaving like a charitable, forgiving Christian monarch while the Queen fulfilled both her role as hostess as well as intercessor.”
-Christopher Mielke, The Archaeology and Material Culture of Queenship in Medieval Hungary, 1000–1395 (Queenship and Power)
#Margaret of France#12th century#hungarian history#historicwomendaily#my post#I find Margaret so fascinating#She's such an obscure and enigmatic figure in English sources - apart from flashes of agency we know next to nothing about her#Made worse by her husband's anomalous and diminished status as junior king which (inevitably) obstructed her own autonomy and agency#So it's startling to see her come alive in Hungarian sources#She seems to have been very lively and active

Sziget Festival has revealed some giant acts performing in 2018 that you won’t want to miss. As one of the world’s biggest celebrated music and art festivals, Sziget returns in 2018 for its 26th edition. From the 8th-15th of August in Budapest, Hungary, Sziget will host some of the most renowned names in music. Tipped as the continent’s answer to Glastonbury, the award winning, globally renowned seven day music & arts experience will bring together 450,000 people for Europe’s largest cultural encounter of its kind!
Topping the bill of the first list of performing artists is Kendrick Lamar, Mumford & Sons and Kygo. Across more than 50 stages, you can expect amazing performances from all artists.
Sziget 2018
The festival will be set in the heart of Budapest on Óbuda Island welcoming Szitizens from over 100 nations. Sziget is a community built festival and known as the Island of Freedom. It is dedicated to embracing diversity and has launched Love Revolution. Love Revolution will use the power of community to bring love, acceptance, tolerance and freedom to the heart of Budapest.
As a multi Grammy winning American sensation, Kendrick Lamar will bring his soaring ambition and lyrical talent to the stage. Also, Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo has a unique electronic sound to show Sziget fans that has been selling out stadiums since his rise to fame 4 years ago. Completing the headline bill and bringing with them a whole host of singalong hits will be undisputed kings of folk rock Mumford & Sons.
Not only will the headliners bring serious talent to the stage in 2018, but also all the other artists. Rock N’ Roll Star Liam Gallagher is hot off the back of his debut solo album and long overdue announcement as NME’s Godlike Genius 2018. London rockers and best mates Wolf Alice and Slaves will be bringing their unparalleled energy to the Hungarian stage. Furthermore, American rock band, Goo Goo Dolls, will be performing alongside kings of nostalgia The Knocks, indie masters Bastille, electro alt-pop geniuses Everything Everything, homeless turned folk-hero Seasick Steve, as well as Cigarettes After Sex, Nothing But Thieves and many more.
Additionally, electronic acts will be prominent at this year’s festival. There will be a spectacular array of acts including chart toppers Clean Bandit, who will be gracing the stage with their classical inspired electropop. Equally important, Danish singer, songwriter and electropop producer MØ and electronic music legends Little Dragon promise to mystify Szitizens with their iconic blend of music.
Sziget line-ups are not line-ups you want to miss. In 2017, Sziget took home the award for best ‘Line-Up of the Year’ at the European Festival Awards. It was their second year running.

Monastic orders have played a prominent role in Budapest's history: in addition to their religious activities, they have influenced science, culture, literature and the fine arts. While several of these monastic orders are still present in Budapest, historically, the world of Pest, Buda, Óbuda and the surrounding smaller settlements was characterized by an outstanding diversity and richness of monastic life. Traces and memories of this can be found in many parts of the city, from the Buda Hills to the Pest city centre. #Margit Island is particularly rich in such connections: in addition to the ruins of the Dominican convent in which Saint Margaret lived, the remains of a former Franciscan church, a small chapel, still connected to the Premonstratensians, Saint Michael's Chapel can also be found on the Island. The Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré was founded by Saint Norbert of Xanten, who took his solemn vow at Christmas 1121 in the Prémontré Valley in western France. The tiny church was built cca 1234, the monastery stood once upon a time next to it can be seen today only in its ruins.

In my opinion, one of the most interesting sculptures in Budapest is the Centenary Monument built on the 100th anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda at the southern end of Margaret Island. It hides his secrets inside and will only reveal how much plasticity the two intertwined spirals are decorated with if we literally stand in it.
