One of the best-known works by Édouard Debat-Ponsan, born in Toulouse on 25 April 1847, is “The Truth Comes Out of the Well”, from 1898, linked to the well-known “Affaire Dreyfus”.
The canvas is preserved in the Hôtel de ville d'Amboise.
The two male figures are personifications of Lies and Deception.
The well, in which they try to hide the personification of Truth, is a symbol of the darkness in which they want to hide too hot secrets.
Lies and Deception try to hold back the Truth and prevent her from coming out into the open and in doing so they tear their clothes and the Truth appears as she is, naked, without frills, without hiding, sometimes terrible but always beautiful and luminous.
The mirror is one of the symbols of truth, since through it the rapprochement of the subject and the object, of reality and its representation, is concretized.
