「    The first thing he experiences is an uneasy dream.

Mostly, it’s a blurred set of ‘moving images’, with different colors and lights COALESCING, muffled sounds and voices, and a place he doesn’t recognize –– the dream is nothing but confusing, and every time he tries to grasp the meaning behind it, it slips through his fingers like WATER, unable to be gathered up again with his hands.

Something about it makes him feel… UNSETTLED, though, and he doesn’t quite understand why it does. But before he wakes up from it, he’s plummeting all the sudden, like the ground underneath his feet had VANISHED without warning, and there’s a sudden sharp pain with the color RED taking over his entire sight, a DESPERATE AND FEARFUL CRY torn out through someone’s throat ––

Then, it all goes dark into nothingness, and he slowly comes out of his sleep with a stir in his hand…

His eyes flutters, barely able to stay open, and his lips part to breathe through… a mask ( ? ). Disorientated and feeling out of place, he doesn’t register the presence of others immediately, not until there are voices reaching his ears ( a male’s and a female’s ), which causes him to shift his gaze around and eventually land on the sight of two people in the room…    」

「    Or perhaps otherwise known as ‘murder scene exhibit A or B’ ? –– “ You know what… I doubt it would make a difference, whether I pick the aquarium or the amusement park, or any place for that matter. ” Chances are that he’ll most likely just land up in another case, or get involved in another life-threatening crisis where people might die ( himself included ).

「    Not really a fan of hot weathers, but not quite a fan of cold weathers, either…

“ … Winter, I suppose. ” is eventually the decision he settles on, simply from the mere fact that summer heat tends to feel worse to him ( and at least during the winter season, he’ll have an excuse to stay indoors, especially when he wants to spend the day on just reading.

Plus, people can’t tell him to go outside, when it’s too cold outdoors ).      」

“ I assume the soul will go where it’s meant to, though, when the time comes. Where that might be, no one can tell with certainty. But I feel that’s why it’s more important and worthwhile to live out your life the way you want to, to make the best of it, instead of speculating and worry about the afterlife. ”    」

「     The SHOUT Ran had given out comes from the right, the assaulter’s hand clasped around the detective’s mouth in a tight grip –– ‘ Ran –– ! ’ his mind yells, paralyzed between what he initially had felt ( to warn her, to tell her that she shouldn’t get close because of the danger ) and the realization that someone’s about to PERSONALLY find out why they shouldn’t lay a hand on Kudō Shinichi, only to regret it.

Before a minute could pass, Ran, whose appearance just came within a second, has already made her move, and she’s far too fast for the guy to react, dealing her wrath upon them with a forceful rising punch goes to the guy’s jaw, enough to make them stagger and lose their hold on him. It doesn’t stop there, because in the next moment, QUICK STRIKES from both of her fists fly to the man’s gut ( as if to RETALIATE from when they had punched him in the abdomen, before forcing him against the wall ).

Shinichi ( stunned as he is ) can only lean on the wall with his arm around his middle, watching Ran as she ends it with a final roundhouse kick to the guy’s head, EFFECTIVELY making sure they won’t be standing up any time soon.    」

「    Shinichi wasn’t as nearly as drunk last night to have his head pounding this badly the next morning. In fact, he’s pretty sure he wasn’t near any alcohol the day before.

Nonetheless, he feels groggy as he moves to sit up, hair sticking out at different ends. Making it at least out of the bedroom and to the kitchen on trudging feet, the detective manages to reach for a glass in one of the upper cupboards, a bottle of pills in another.

With a headache in his still lethargic state, the refrigerator’s low humming is somehow… uncomfortable for his ears, as if they can strangely detect the vibrations coming from the appliance. It gets worse enough to make his face twist into a grimace when he opens the storage door, having to close it shut again as soon as he has grabbed for a bottle of mineral water.

          It had never bothered him before. Not like this at least.

Perhaps too sleepy for this, he tries not to think about it, taking care of his initial objective. Once both water and medicine have been consumed, Shinichi ( still in his discomfort ) reflexively turns the kitchen faucet on to wash last night’s dishes. However, to his second astonishment, the running water surprisingly makes just as an unbearable noise, if not worse by its abrupt manifestation, making him flinch in a startle and drop the cutlery from his hand.

A bad mistake, because the strainless steel utensils end up bouncing onto the counter, before scattering on the floor, and the sound is PIERCINGLY PAINFUL, he thinks it could cut through his head and SPLIT it open, and not his hands are enough to help dampen the noise when pressed on his ears.

Before Shinichi realizes it, he’s already on the floor, crouching with his head between his hands and desperately trying to shut out the sharp ringing, wishing it would STOP.    」

「    Ah… well. He can’t really affirm to be surprised with this selection.

As far as Shinichi is aware of, pride is often thought to be an EXAGGERATED SELF-ESTEEM, where one prides themselves as ‘superior’ to others, and it is also the WORST out of the seven sins. “ I suppose, some might imagine there’ve been plenty of instances… ” he starts off with and sets his chin on top of a curled hand. His voice carries an imperturbable, calm air, which is expressed in every part of his conduct as well ( as if he’s no stranger to be labelled with this critique ).

“ In the face of it being a past at this point, I can’t deny that there existed a time where I’ve let fame get to my head ; it happened when I became well-known as a detective. ” which is… probably, the only actual time he had acted conceited. “ It’s not really my intention anymore since then, even if I might still come off as a ‘distant, cold, rude, and arrogant person’ to people at times. ” But that is partially his bluntness and pragmatism being at fault, partially his reticence and uneasy need for self-control ( after all there is a difference between ‘being interpreted as arrogant’ and ‘actually being arrogant’ ).    」

「    ‘ A physical presentation of the mind, huh… ’ The detective repeats to himself, taking a long deep breath as he leans back into his seat. There exist many ways to describe it, some that are more simple, others a bit more complex, and as someone who uses his mind a lot more than the average person, he’s probably in the latter group.

The ballpoint pen twirls in methodic intervals in his hand, his movements done effortlessly as he begins. “ … Since this question is asked, I assume you’re familiar with the method of Loci ? ” –– a TECHNIQUE of ‘memory enhancement’, in which one uses visualizations with the utility of spatial memory and familiar information of one’s environment, in order to make recollections of data more quick and efficient –– “ There are variations of it, but let’s just go with the one I tend to use, which involves imaginary locations. ”

“ If my mind had a physical form, it would look like a ‘glass box’ of a considerable size, which then has the ‘function’ to perform ‘simulations’ of places; be it areas I’ve been to, like my house, my classroom at Teitan High, the police station, a crime scene… or places build more of imagination than actual places in the real world, for example a concert hall, or a court room. ”
