in that moment, when he blurted those words like nothing, time itself stopped, like it was never there. 

"w-what?" lene stuttered, still trying to process why he chose now and why your favourite local dinner would've been the appropriate place.

to think this was supposed to be the day you both spent time together since he was always held up with all his tournaments.

but when lene thought about it, he had been weird the past few months—distant when she was there, not talking, or as excited to be around her. and on the day she thought he'd make it up to her, he made it worse.

the girl stared at the half-empty strawberry milkshake, a straw facing her and one facing him, her lipgloss staining the edge.

"i see..." she murmured, every insult that she wanted to throw at him stuck in lene's throat. she couldn't bring it to herself to call him names or say how shitty of a person he was because she knew he wasn't.

"listen i'm sorry-" the boy was cut off by the girl standing up and grabbing her purse, trying to hold back the urge to roll her eyes. "i don't need an apology, ass hole," she snapped, a sad glint in her eyes as she looked around the comforting and familiar diner that she knew she'd never gain the courage to step into again. 

at least until a few years pass, and she would find herself tearing up as she looked at the old picture of her and her beloved ex.
